The Summer of Spain Continues
By: Corey | July 7th, 2008
After a thrilling European Championship win which I will brag about until the day I die, Spain was left celebrating again, when Rafa Nadal won Wimbeldon, breaking Roger Federer’s strangle-hold on the competition. Now this is a Real Madrid blog, so I wont go into specifics about tennis or the match, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ans the fact that Rafa is a self-proclaimed Madridista makes it all the more special for us Real fans.
I have been a tennis fan since I was young, when I watched the great Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi play. I was put into a tennis training facility at 6, and was trained for 7 years before I played varsity tennis as an 8th grader. Now I dont say this to brag about my abilities, because my tennis career was cut short by having to make a choice between playing tennis and training or playing club soccer and training. And I also broke my wrist playing soccer, which never fully healed nad limited my forehand. Suffice to say, the easy choice for me was to keep playing soccer.
But you may understand that I do enjoy the game, so Sunday’s triumph for Nadal was wonderful. I like Federer, he is an incredible gifted player, hell, he doesnt even break a sweat in a 5 set match, but for me Nadal is the man. And I would just like to wish him congratulations on winning Wimbeldon, you have made all Madridista’s happy, and we cant wait to see you in the stands next season.
*I will be doing a series of small posts this week because transfer news or any news is limited to small interest pieces*

There are no classier people in sports then Nadal and Federer. I wish they both could have won.

Corey, did you see Calderon embrace Nadal as he was walking off the court?
And congrats to Rafa. A well deserved win and a match for the ages.

I did see Calderon embrace Nadal, and the words out of Nadal’s mouth were “i cant believe you came!”. Calderon may be hated by Manchester United fans, but he is pretty much loved by true Madridista’s which is nice. And I was just happy to see a great tennis match, those to will meet plenty more times, but that match was special.

Best match of Tennis I’ve ever watched, and that Nadal won makes it all the sweeter. I, too, started watching tennis during the Sampras/Agassi saga (total Agassi fan - was one of the millions of kids pretending they had a blond mop while smashing balls in park tennis courts) but until this match, I’d pretty much lost interest. I, along with a lot of other people, I imagine, will probably start paying a lot more attention now. Congratulations, Rafa.

Its nice to see how athletes from different sports maintain friendships. Nadal asked to have his match moved to watch Spain play on Sunday. Supposedly Nadal sent his good friend Iker a text congratulating the squad on the win and I bet it was reciprocated this weekend. I love tennis as a player and fan and its nice to see things like this. Although, I do wish Nadal had truly become a Barca fan and not just a supporter of the team when his uncle was there.
