Thursday Morning Hangover

By: Steve | May 8th, 2008

HALA MADRID!!! I don’t have a real hangover, just a lingering joyous delirium.

I re-read my liveblog and it doesn’t grow old - i love the fact that we were the hungrier team, playing solid, stylistic, beautiful football, the type Barca used to play and only wishes now that they could play. What a thorough victory, top to bottom. For more kicks, check out the post-mortem on the Barcelona Offside blog.

Allow me to take a step back and look at what this means for us… basically Barca is in for some major retooling in the offseason, while I think we only need to make a couple small additions in order to maintain our ascent. Next year, we should be aiming for the Liga, the Copa as well as at least the Champions League semis. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to do it.

Barcelona came close this year - let’s not forget that this year it seemed that no one wanted to win the Liga around January and February, mediocrity was the name of the game, and they also made the Copa finals and the Champions League semis. We should be able to match that, if not exceed it.

That said, we will need some bolstering up front, and in the back as well. Counting on a continued Raul renaissance may be asking much, but is it any coincidence that he’s done this well after being snubbed for La Furia Roja? I think not. Also, with Ruud perhaps beginning to show a bit of age, he may need more rest and Schuster hasn’t shown that he trusts any other striker completely yet. Saviola will probably leave if we find a better option (please!), Soldado seems to be permanently in the doghouse, and Higuain may yet take that next step up for a full match, but he seems to need to play as the out-and-out striker - in Ruud’s role, rather than with the Dutchman. If Madrid do indeed manage to land someone along the lines of David Villa or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, I’ll be thrilled.

At the back, I’m not sure if Cannavaro will stay or not, but our constant makeshift defense needs more resources. Pepe has come on like gangbusters and he’s been solid. Heinze has played like a tool sometimes, but his versatility to play on the left or in the middle has saved our bacon numerous times this year - i don’t think he’ll be discarded unless we can land someone like Garay. Torres seemed to take a step back, maybe he needs more PT. Marcelo has really improved, last night was easily his best night in the white shirt. Ramos is Ramos - more on him later.

There were loads of rumours that Inter were after Diarra, but I hope he doesn’t leave - he’s been a rock in the centre of the pitch, and he’s shown some amazing skills in the last couple months. If anything he’s a good luck charm - he’s won 6 straight national league titles (4 with Lyon, 2 with Madrid), and 7 in the last 8 years. Gago has improved immensely, though his tackling needs a bit of work, and with Banega’s drunk driving troubles in Valencia, was anyone ever worried that we might not have gotten the right guy?

With our buy-backs of Granero, Javi Garcia, and De La Red, I think we’ll probably be either doing some trades or releasing some of the current midfield. Unfortunately, I think Baptista is the first one under the bus in this scenario - he’s a bit underappreciated here but he’d still fetch a good price on the open market. Drenthe might also go looking for more work but i’d like to keep the buy-back on him too - what a motor on that kid.

Anyway, I’m rambling a bit, so let’s go to some interesting links i’ve found today…

Chelsea in for Ramos
I saw this first on Goal.com, but now that it’s in the Guardian, I’m a bit worried. It’s true that Ramos might be a bit pissed off that Madrid hasn’t renegotiated his deal, in light of the lifetime deals for Raul, Guti and Casillas… that might explain some of the hotheadedness we saw this year. But he is undeniably the best rightback we’ve had in a LONG time, and someone we can count on for the next 10 years, so why aren’t we tossing him a new contract so he can brush off Abramovich’s billions? Keep an eye on this one…

Barca going for Pique or Coloccini - and NOT Garay
Barca look to bolster their central defense in light of Gabi Milito’s devastating injury in the form of Man U’s Gerard Pique or Deportivo’s Fabricio Coloccini. It’s interesting for us because Barca were on the verge of getting Garay’s John Hancock on a transfer, but they pulled out at the last moment. Why? Was it something about Garay that we haven’t heard about? Do we still stand a chance to get this guy? On a lighter note, in the article, it mentions that Pique’s grandfather was a former club director at Barcelona, Amador Bernabeu - surely some relation to our Santiago?

Huntelaar may extend with Ajax
If Huntelaar extends with Ajax, we’re down to Villa… or does anyone like the idea of pursuing someone like Berbatov or Adebayor? I’m not going to suggest Drogba, who is awesome but is also pushing 30… Benzema would be amazing, but you know Lyon aren’t going to let him go without a massive fight.

Sampdoria to take Cassano permanently and Soldado on loan
Pretty self-explanatory… good riddance to the pimpled one, and I’d love to see Soldado get some PT anywhere, the boy deserves to play.

Sneijder’s brother approached by Madrid, but Wes tells them no
Wesley Sneijder’s little brother Rodney appears to have caught the interest of the Real hierarchy, but after coming back from scouting him, the Dutch international has told them to lay off until Rodney breaks into the first team at Ajax. Wesley doesn’t believe in the poaching of youth team players, which is probably best for the Patient Pitbull as Rodney is known, considering the quality of the Ajax machine.

Anyways, there’s loads of stuff up on Goal.com worth a glance, from player reactions to an article about Barca fans attacking the team bus at the airport. Hilarious.

Hi Steve, it’s a nice feeling, isn’t it?

Good analysis on next season and possible trasnfers in/out, but I have a few comments:

On the Copa del Rey: despite all the talk every season, Real don’t care and neither do any of the other teams; it provides a run-out for the underused squad members and little more unless you happen to get to the semis, when the club starts to take it a little more seriously if the season hasn’t been going well. If they’re still in the CL, not even then. Unles the RFEF decide to change the rules and award the winner a CL spot instead of the UEFA cup, this competition will remain as seriously devalued as it’s been for years.

I actually think the defence looks pretty good at the moment and needs little tweaking. With a bit of luck, even Metzelder may turn out to have been a good investment! On the Ramos issue, there’s a large part of me that says take £50 million if it truly is on offer and buy Alves from Sevilla to cover the right flank. I suspect if Chelsea make an offer it won’t be anywhere near as large as that (they could sign Alves themselves for less, why would they?)

On Diarra, I am on record as saying we should keep him even before his latest displays (http://allinwhite.blogspot.com/2008/02/diarra-doomed.html). Baptista will probably be offloaded, and one or two of the buy-backs will be used for some trade or other (like it or not, it makes good financial sense)

Up front is where I have trouble: we have an ageing strike force, and even with the likes of Robben and Robinho providing some of the goals, we need replacements and Higuaín by himself is not enough. However, this is one of the most overrated positions in the market and with Euro 2008 coming up, I hope Real make their moves with plenty of time to avoid paying ’silly money’ over the summer.

HALA MADRID!!! Who could have expected that, what an unbelievable joy to watch these guys play. That is some of the best footballing I’ve seen all year from any team, champion’s league play included. Barca is a broken team, but their intention was not going to be to let us have the “pasillo”, they knew they were playing for Champions league entry next year. We just outplayed the hell out of them, and it was appropriate and must have been a lot of fun for our guys. Their play was top-notch! Brilliant ball movement, creative passing, very firm back line, Gago and Diarra doing a hell of a job controlling the mid, everybody stepping up to create plays not just Guti, ruthless scoring, etc… Give me 1 game against Man U or Chelsea, and the way they are playing right now, I would take Real any day…and lay down a good chunk of change while doing it. I could go on and on about these guys and how well they are coming together as a team. Bernadino no doubt has played a role in their development, I am extremely impressed, seeing as how mid-season he was going through a crisis. It’s going to be scary how much these guys can accomplish in the next few years. I don’t know about you guys but I’m excited.

Steve, great write up, but I have to disagree with one thing, and it only bothers me because Barca fans were saying the same thing on their thread yesterday, and it’s about Heinze. I disagree that he’s been a tool, and that he only brings marginal value to the squad and only because of his versatility. Heinze is a stud and should have gained major respect from all Real fans. He has been not just the most consistent Real defender in the stretch, but also the one with the most grit, attitude, energy and overall stones in the back. The Osasuna game was not an anomaly, it was just representative of how that guy plays, till he gets bloody, getting cards in an effort to impose his will on opponents and doing anything to prevent goals. He’s not the biggest and fastest that would be Pepe, and he may not be the most wily that would be Canna, but he is a gritty pitbull frothing at the mouth and I’ll take that on my squad any day. …plus he’s versatile.

Gonzalo, about the Copa… I know we’ve never treated the Copa with anything but disdain, but if Barca can manage the feat, i don’t see why we can’t. Plus, Raul is said to be desperate to add the Copa to his trophy collection, so I have to assume that we’ll at least put forth some effort next year. And if Metzelder comes anywhere close to the form he’s shown before in Dortmund, i’ll be a happy camper.

elmeromero, I admire Heinze for the reasons you listed - heart, attitude, grit. But the plain fact is that he made more mistakes during the season than any other defender. His penchant for going to ground on almost every clearance belies improper technique. His self-control is almost as bad as Guti’s. I would keep him on the squad as a backup defender, but there’s no way I’d have confidence with him in every single starting lineup as it seems to have been the past few matches.

Steve, I agree with you that Heinze will never be the staple defender in our defense, but I like him staying on the squad. I also agree that he made some mistakes throughout the year on missing his marks or being out of place and allowing for some goals, but there were a lot of players on this squad that were making mistakes, Gago, Diarra, Robben, Higuain, etc.. But all these guys are coming around, they have developed as players on a team that was supposed to be in transition. I say we keep Heinze around for another year and let him continue to play his role of steady sub for whichever starter is out. Maybe I’m just pumped after the way these guys are playing lately, I love this squad, I just don’t want to make too many changes.

    Steve,

Raúl’s been trotting out that line about wanting the Copa del Rey for about 10 years now - ultimately the league and the CL (or UEFA if the previous season was awful) are what the club always concentrates on. It didn’t use to be that way, when there was only one spot for the European Cup and winning the Copa gave you a ticket for the Cup Winners’ Cup, it used to be something worth winning.

Having said that, if Real get in a position where they are a couple of matches from winning it, they’ll bring out the big guns, but even that’s no guarantee. Over the last few years, Real’s record in the Copa is as follows:

2007-08 - lost to Mallorca in the last 16
2006-07 - lost to Betis in the last 16
2005-06 - lost to Zaragoza in the semifinal
2004-05 - lost to Valladolid in the last 16
2003-04 - lost to Zaragoza in the final
2002-03 - lost to Mallorca in the quarter final
2001-02 - lost to Deportivo in the final (the Centenariazo)
2000-01 - lost to Nàstic in the last 16
1999-00 - lost to Toledo in the last 64

So, they made the semis once and the final twice in nine years - not a great record, given the supposed superiority over the teams they went out to.

Gonzalo, well, maybe it’s been true for the last 10 years then. But a cup is a cup, still a major feather to stick in your cap. I mean, look at the relevance of the Coppa or the FA Cup. Just because they haven’t given the Copa its due accord doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

elmeromero, yeah, I don’t think huge changes are needed - don’t fix what ain’t broke. but at the same time, if we can upgrade the defense with someone like Garay, that would give us some great depth at a position where you need stalwarts like we had in Hierro.

Steve, I’m not disagreeing with you, I think it merely reflects the times we are in. Finishing in the top four in the league gives you access to the CL and the next 3 spots are for the UEFA cup, so the incentive to fight for a UEFA spot in the knock-out Copa del Rey is highly diminished.

Somehow the Copa del Rey just does not have the same cache as winning the FA cup, despite its being the oldes football competition in Spain. That’s why I think it needs revitalising with one-off ties (like the FA Cup) and a bigger prize (CL spot) - then you would truly see a fascinating competition, not just the chance of a run-out for your substitutes.

Hmmm, agree with you there, Gonzalo… the Copa definitely doesn’t seem to carry the same weight for clubs as the FA Cup. I guess it’s seen as the Carling Cup is seen here… no more than a second-rate trophy. Too bad.

Laporta’s just announced Guardiola will be replacing Rijkaard at Barça from the beginning of next season - risky gamble or inspired choice? I know where my money would be ;)

I’ve been praying since the beginning of the year that we keep this squad together - besides Saviola, I can’t think of a single player I actually want to leave. That said, I completely agree with you on Baptista and Drenthe, Steve - especially the part about a buy back on Drenthe.

There are four players that I’m most concerned about leaving at the moment. I really agree about Diarra, especially when it comes to gritty away games like Osasuna (who may or may not be a problem, next season, depending on how they finish their current campaign). I’m also worried about Ruud - there has been some speculation about his pursuit of further European glory, possibly in the form of a Serie A title. I don’t know if any of you heard the rumour of possibly trading both of the above for Zlatan Ibrohimovich. Not sure how I’d feel about that…

But the player I’m most concerned with is Sergio Ramos. I don’t want Dani Alves - he’s a talented player, but given the option of a Brazilian mercinary and a Furia Roja, who has the potential to serve out his footballing careet in white, the choice is not only obvious, but emphatically so. Ramos has felt a lack of support from the team this season (reportedly - but you can also see his frustration on the field) and has come under fire for his card accumulation. Steve might be right to draw parallels there, but it doesn’t help that he seems to have become a marked man by the refs. This might not have been his strongest year, but I believe we’ve yet to see his best.

Lastly, Robinho. With Robben’s rise to fame (and avoidance of injuries) he seems to have become Schuster’s first choice on the left. Personally, I think he’s fun to watch but the whole dribble into the net syndrom (which seems to be improving) is still a problem. And Robinho is hardly one to play second fiddle to anyone, and that seems to be how he’s finishing the season. When he came out yesterday he seemed slothy and unmotivated. We can’t rely on Robben, injuries considered - and I don’t want to risk an unsettled Robinnho. My opinion, anyhow.

John, I agree with all your sentiments. I think we really need to make some effort to keep these key players - Ramos, Robinho, Diarra.

I mean, look how unbalanced we got after Makelele left - and now, it seems we’ve found at least a decent replacement. Remember all the craptastic people we’ve brought in before - does anyone remember why we even thought Thomas Gravesen was worthwhile? - and now that we have Diarra, why are we in a rush to get rid of him? It’s not like Diarra and Gago are the double pivot of last year, both have shown much better skills this year going forward, more than Makelele has ever displayed.

Ramos needs to feel loved? Fine, let’s do it. He would be the perfect guy to have as our defensive anchor. Would Alves really be a replacement? Surely he’s not as good defensively or in the air, so what we’re looking at is a right winger? No thanks. We made a mistake by alienating Hierro - let’s not do it again with Ramos.

Robinho is awesome. Let’s face it, there was a stretch this season where he was by far the best player on the pitch, San Iker aside. When everyone else seemed to be revelling in their own mediocrity, Robinho kept us going. We need to keep him too, he’s only now getting settled in.
