Update on Ruben de la Red
By: Corey | May 6th, 2009Not much of an update, but some more news on my favorite canterano, Ruben de la Red, as he looks to return to action after fainting back in October. A body of tests have been run to determine the source of the episode, and he has been kept out of the game all year as a precautionary measure until the tests are conclusively in his favor. It is in everyone’s best interest that we avoid another Antonio Puerta situation, may he rest in peace.
English article here, Spanish one here.
He has one more series of tests that should determine if their is a genetic heart problem, but otherwise the other tests, which were primarily cardiac tests. Carlos Diez, Director of Real Madrid’s Medical Services, along with a panel of experts from around the world examined Ruben’s test results which were started December 3rd. The verdict was: “The player fainted due to efforts that had a probable cardiological origin.” So now the genetic tests become the primary focus, and if those come out with no serious concerns, Ruben will be cleared to play next season. Hooray!
Many of us have been clammoring for his return (health permitting) as he is essential the solution to our midfield problems next season. A central midfielder with creativite abilities and astute positioning, who can help out defensively as well. Essentially a much better Fernando Gago to partner Lass or Mamadou Diarra next season. We might have our wish, but the most important thing is to make sure his health is not at risk while playing football. Lets hope this last series of test gives him the confirmation he needs to continue his career.

Hope he is given the all clear to play again. He is a great player and will only make our team stronger. Wish him all the best.

I can’t wait until he is (hopefully) cleared to play again. Not only he is a great player, he’s also Spanish, which I’d love to see more of in white jerseys.

Its a weird thing with this heart problem nightmare. I think we are still so far behind in the diagnosis of this problem. Kanu heart problem was discovered many years after he became a professional well known player. Thuram…The Cameroonian Foe, then That guy in Belgium (i guess)then Puerta in the same season…
De la red is a good player for sure. but I add my voice to insure that he is under no threat to play before giving green light. Keeping him out for the rest of the season (even though the primary tests were encouraging) was a very responsible decision. It will be sad if a young player career end early , But definitely avoiding another tragedy is a must! The puerta/foe moments are days to remember, but not to relive.

Thanks Corey for another great post. Its a pitty Real Madrid fans have stopped intersting about their team. marca is making a poll to see who should continue next year on the team, and there you can see by yourself what people think about the great players whove helped us winning two consecutive Ligas against a wonderfull barça… with epic victories ["everybody" in madrid wanted Capello out and when schuster --> |"what an ass"| <-- came they blamed Calderon for actually having get rid of him!!!]
Gu, R7, VN, Sn, Ga, MD get very low percentage as for being the team favourites; these guys deserve better.
In addition to our other players, and watching the whole as a team… it IS fabulous! Garay is coming so sign in a good LB (Chiellini FTW), enough MF already, two pure wingers( Silva, Ribery, CR7…) and you are done (or so do i think).
Please God dont let Florentino make a joke out of Real again, and if he DOES get elected please dont let him interfere on the pitch, but in the office.

Great post Corey, I’m glad Ruben’s getting there in terms of his physical health, but we can’t ignore the psychological side of what happened to him, hopefully he’ll be able to overcome all of this, and get back on track to being the player all madridistas know he can become….
I haven’t seen the poll on Marca, but that doesn’t surprise me, the season is lost, and they’re already thinking ahead for next year, we just have to wait for the summer so we can know who the new president will be, and the changes that person will make for next year…
I for one will keep watching the games, so HALA MADRID!!!!

I heavily hope we will! I have to admit, I’ve been avoiding all things Real having sunk into a deep footballing depression partially because of the Barcelona devastation. I averted my attention to cheering on Spanish football and the end of EPL dominance in the Champion’s League, which (ironically) meant rooting for the enemy (forgive me).
But it wasn’t just our loss to the blaugrana that got me down, it was that two days later I read an article posted on tribal football (I know, I know) that said Ruben de la Red had been resubmitted to the hospital due to heart complications.
So this article did a lot to restore my spirits – thanks Corey. And for anyone who’s about to get on me for not being a “true fan,” save it. I will never stop supporting my club, it’s just in moments such as these, I only want to see them play, I don’t want to talk about what happened.
HALA MADRID!!!

According to Radio Marca, De La Red can unfortunately not play next season. We need him so much but if his health is at stake, I want him to end his career.
