What Is Wrong With Our Team?

By: Corey | March 17th, 2008

After another embaressing loss to Deportivo on Saturday which keeps the “curse” alive for another year (18 in total), I question everyone as to why our team has suddenly began loosing games like Elliot Spitzer visits whore houses? It seems like they cant get a sniff of a win on the road, and in the big games (except the Nou Camp win) they lack any fire or cutting edge. Is it Schuster? Is it the players? Or do we expect to much from one of the most expensive squads in the world? Your answers are greatly appreciated, I am still searching for mine.

As your search for answers mulls on, here is some music and some added content for everyone:

I will add here a few transfer bits, even though its only March, but the press is already turned the wheel on this stuff:

- Diego has signed for us, or will sign for us, or wants to over other teams? I cant believe anything in the gossip rags anymore so take it in stride, but with his self professed love for the club, either theres some truth in it or the press is tryin to connect the dots here. May solve our midfield creativity problem.

- Julen Lopetegui is observing Roman Pavlyuchenko. Say that 5 times fast. He is 26 at Spartak Moscow and single handedly knocked Marseille out of the UEFA Cup with his goals. No more then a back up striker, but I really doubt this one, he is a decent player but not Real Madrid class, then again look at Saviola. ZING!

- Speaking of Saviola, he has been put up for sale already. Thanks Mijatovic.

- Zinedine Zidane, you know, everyone second hero behind Raul, wants to coach with Real. Hooray, his son Enzo plays for our youth team as well (I just found out Ronaldo’s son Ronald does as well, while Micheal Laudrups son Mads is in the Real C team), which is awesome. He still lives in Madrid, Calderon, throw him a position please, the man is a genius, and if Don Stefano’s coaching career was anything to go by, Zidane will be a brilliant coach some day.

“I would like to go back, not necessarily as coach, but it would be good as I live in Madrid anyway,” Zidane explained.

- This is from Goal.com, I dont believe it for a second but here it is:

After Raúl had stated that it was a poor performance to the media, he talked with Guti about why there was no spark throughout the side, according to AS.

While their position in the league table was not greatly affected after Barcelona were held by Almería, Madrid’s veterans were still concerned that performances have to improve.

Guti is reported to have been stunned that he was the only player even attempting to create something from midfield, while Raúl then spoke at length about his feelings on the game.

The pair were confused that Roberto Soldado was named in the starting line-up, but because of the importance of the game and not because of his performance.

A silver lining for Madrid is that six of their last ten games of the season are at home and Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sergio Ramos are both set to return to the team.

Shocked that Roberto Soldado was named a starter??? What? No player ever reacts that way to one of their own teammates gettign a start, come on. Bullshit

And finally, enjoy your day, because you are only slowing getting closer to death, or as I like to call it, not being in college any more. Adios Madridistas!

i think that only one to blame is tha coach! leaving robinho, and bautista on tha bench. The only one that should have bein on the bench should have bein in soldado! or even put him in tha 2nd half. CHANGE THA COACH!

the rumor mill has started up, Diego confirming he wants to play at Real, Pepe telling the Press that Quaresma had called him to ask how he liked playing at Real (Pepe of course had good things to say), Pavlyochenko getting press, and who knows who else will be thrown into the mix before the season is up. Saviola is gone for sure, things not looking good for Soldado. At this point, I wouldn’t even say Guti is safe. I would imagine that Sneijder, Ruud, Raul, Iker, Sergio, Torres(only because he is a Real product), Pepe, Robben are probably safe, but everyone else is probably an option for trade, loan or sell. We could see a very different team next year, coach and all.

Sorry don’t mean to be a sensationalist, these guys still might end up winning the league, but that’s just not good enough at Real anymore. Unfortunately, I would say Schuster has been primarily to blame, but it’s also a fact that this team is unbalanced, with too many left wingers, not enough right wingers. No consistent mid-field driving force, old un-dynamic strikers, a back line that can’t stay healthy, etc.. And then there is Saint Iker, he’s definitely safe.

By the second half I was screaming for Baptista to be put in. It seems like he’s the only player who’s willing to play the ball forward, rather than horizontally, and actually take a shot. Basically, I feel like the players at Madrid don’t want to take responsibility. They pass the ball off rather than take a shot or attempt to break through the defence. Watching them ditch the ball is like watching grade schoolers play hot potato.

Seriously, look at this statistic: 9 total shots, 0 shots on goal. I mean, C’mon!

I feel your pain buddy. It’s funny that the defensively minded Capello brought us more excitement and last minute heroics to be proud of than a Schuster coached squad has and probably ever will.

Schuster has been poor with his decisions in the second half of games. I am a little disappointed in his tactical know how as well, he has been severly out coached in most of the losses the second half of the season.

It’s really the lack of fundamental play that’s shocking to me. Whether that means marking your man on a set piece or something as basic as SHOOTING THE BALL, it seems like no-one’s reminding this squad of the basics. The ultimate effect is a side that lacks discipline and desisiveness.

That sounds like Schuster in a nut shell, its funny how a teams play can reflect the coaches personal characteristics. Schuster has always be undecisive and lacking in discipline (strange for a German). While Capello was decisive and full of discipline and it showed on the field. Luxemburgo and the youth coaches we had never really stamped much of an identity on the team, but Del Bosque was at times care free and creative as a coach, and it really showed in the team. And we won titles with the last two coaches that stamped an identity on the team, so maybe all is not lost with Schuster, but his identity isnt typical of a winner.
