Real 2-0 Zaragoza

By: Corey | January 7th, 2008

This was a strange game, the first hour was so boring that I legitamtely fell asleep. I was bored to death by a combo of watching Real stutter and the Giants-Bucs game be incredibly boring as well. The whole team sucked offensively for an hour, defensively we were not bad, as containing Milito and Olivera is difficult, but Casillas saved our ass as Zaragoza could have made it 3-0. But we hung on and got two goals, and as they say, winning even when you play poorly is the mark of a true champion. And I am really not in a good modd today, pissed to say the least. So I am gonna defer my review and all of that stuff, god I am mad:

The Santiago Bernabéu rang in 2008 La Liga action with a bang. Bernd Schuster sat Pepe, but Heinze was fit for action against a Zaragoza side with López Vallejo debuting in goal and Sergio García along right flank and Zapater the left.
Van Nistelrooy fired the first warning shot and came close to giving Madrid the early lead. Heinze fell injured in the 16th minute and was replaced by Miguel Torres, which entailed Sergio Ramos taking position in the centre of the back line. Oliveira had a golden opportunity six minutes later but the goal was disallowed after being flagged offside for chasing the Diego Milito ricochet. Luccin then tried his luck with a header, followed by Sergio García from outside the box. Zaragoza enjoyed their best minutes of fast, offensive-minded football.

Real Madrid stuck to their gameplan. Baptista made a great run on goal and dribbled past his markers, but Robinho was unable to capitalize after receiving the assist. It was Madrid’s best play of the match, and it jump-started the Whites after several minutes of lackadaisical play. Zaragoza’s main threat was Sergio García, who was responsible for creating every offensive series for the visitors, but Casillas and their lack of accuracy on goal prevented them from heading into the half with the lead. López Vallejo also made an outstanding save in the 43rd minute to keep Sneijder’s shot from finding the back of the net.

Guti tabbed in the second half
Zaragoza dominated the match coming out of the dressing room. Sergio García served an assist to Milito, who was alone in front of Casillas, but the Madridista keeper saved the day. Iker was then forced to stop a powerful, long-range shot by Zapater. Schuster needed fresh legs and innovative ideas on the pitch, so the German gave Guti the nod in place of Sneijder.

Guti proved effective seconds after coming on with a brilliant pass that Torres was unable to intercept. Casillas, meanwhile, was back to his old self, this time with Diogo, who couldn’t find gold with a strong header. Oliveira’s shot struck off the far post two minutes later. Iker was well on his way to his fourth straight clean sheet.

Van Nistelrooy’s ninth
Zaragoza may have been playing at their finest, but Real Madrid were about to take the lead and never look back. Robinho made his way by Juanfran on the right flank and curled in a brilliant cross for Van Nistelrooy to header home for his ninth of the season.

Uncontainable Robinho
After tallying an assist in the first goal, Robinho added the nail in the coffin 11 minutes later. The Brazilian finished his brilliant run from the midfield with a perfect shot across the box which found the far corner of López Vallejo’s net.

Zaragoza were done in and could only watch as the best keeper in the world prevented them from clawing back. Real Madrid maintain their seven-point lead over Barcelona, while Espanyol are eight off and Atletico ten away.

Twenty straight wins at the Bernabéu
Including tonight’s victory, Real Madrid have 20 straight wins at the Bernabéu (League, Champions League, and King’s Cup matches). The Whites have laid claim to all 27 possible points at home so far this season. The next to try their luck on this indomitable fortress are Mallorca in Cup action, but first the Whites hit the road for the away leg of the tie and a League clash against Levante.

The game was crap, it really was. Zaragoa stiffled an ineffecitve midfield, with Sneijder particaularly inept. Ruud and Raul were silent, and besides Diarra picking up every loose ball he could and doing well in the tackle. He will be sorely missed in when he leaves for the ACN. And defensively, our offsides trap was lacking, probably because Sergio Ramos was switched to the center midway through the first half. The first half sucked, I got a nap in after a very late night.

Second half was terrible as well until Guti came in. He then was able to orchestrate things and bam, 2 goals. Zaragoza had chances throughout that Casillas just absolute denied. He was great tonight, besides Guti, looked like he actually gave a crap. Canna did well to, he got injured in the second but battled on. He has greatly improved since last year. And Baptista running up the field and shrugging off a bunch of challeneges that were fouls and laying the ball of to Robiho. Thats when the match got a little better.

I think a few things should be clear to Schuster now. Sneijder just doesnt do the job Guti does. Baptista and Diarra is a formidable partnership in the middle and I dont think Gago can step in for Diarra adequately. And Heinze was a waste of money after yet another injury.

Thats all for today, have a good one. Adios.

    Me aburro!

I agree, that game was boring as shit. It sounded like the entire Bernabeu was asleep as well.

Did you have to include ‘lackadaisical’ in the match review for a bet? ;) just kidding…

While Diarra was effective at cutting Zaragoza’s forward play, he was not effective enough (given the 15 shots on goal and that Casillas has now made more saves this season than the Levante keeper…). He was also pants at playing the ball onto another Real player. Looks like his mind was on other things… Problem is, I agree with you that Gago just does not fulfil the same kind of role, but I’ve no idea whether or how Schuster will rearrange the midfield in January.

The back four situation is looking dodgy: Metzelder and Heinze definitely out, Cannavaro and Pepe are doubtful, and Sergio Ramos is suspended for the next league game (though not for the Copa del Rey). If memory serves, Torres *did* played in the centre under Capello once or twice, but it’s not his position and Marcelo’s defensive abilities don’t inspire me particularly… So, unless both Cannavaro and Pepe recover in time for the weekend, who are going to be the central defenders against Levante? Then again, given Levante’s poor scoring record (11 goals in 18 games), maybe we can just play a 1-2-4-4 formation ;)

Didn’t see all of yesterday’s game … but lately Canna and Pepe in the middle have been fanstastic. They shut down Barca a couple weeks ago. Ramos is great, but struggles in the middle, and is irreplacable on the right flank. RM back line, without injuries, is looking very solid, and it helps to have Casillas in net.

Wow, aren’t you all a barrel of doom and gloom… Why so pissed, Corey?

I have a much different take on the game - Zaragoza played amazing attacking football, Sergio Garcia being especially effective, but Madrid’s defense withstood the assault(albeit San Iker deserves most of the credit). I actually really enjoyed watching Marcelo battle Garcia, and I think he proved his skills exceed mere attacking left back.

And though the passing was shite in the first half, once Los Blancos caught a whiff of goal, they were a machine. That touch by Robinho to set up the first goal, via Ruud’s sharky header? Pure bliss. And the way he kept feinting inward before the second goal, confusing the defender as to whether he’d pass or shoot? It was like he had him on a string.

While Madrid are certainly going to come across some hard times, both in the back and in the middle, we’re currently sitting pretty at 7 points up on the table. HALA MADRID!

I am not to concerned with the center back situation. Torres was originally a center back in the junior divisions, and he could play there, although not as well as say Canna. Pepe should be able to play, and Canna may be out, he looked uncomfortable after he got hurt during the match. Salgado and Marcelo should continue on the outside, and we always have available Castilla including Kagelmacher, Schorch, Mateo Vilafene and Krol. So the situation is not dire, I would actually hope Schuster takes this oppurtunity to call up one of those guys.

John, I am pissed because some bitch took my desk at work and now I got stuck in the corner of the room with a POS computer, and a shitty chair which makes a difference when your sitting here for 5 hours at a time. But no worries, this is my last week, then I can go back to school and work on computers, my preferred form on income other whoring myself for small change. Ay Ay!

The keys to the game were 1-Pepe’s absence, 2-Casillas’ Heroism and 3-Robinho’s creativity in the clutch

    hala Madrid!
