Super Cup Review- Real 0-1 Sevilla
By: Corey | August 12th, 2007The Phantom Penalty
Because Ryan forgot the time difference in the far away land of Spain and missed the game, here is a recap. (taking your girlfriend to the mall instead of watching your team, pfff)
Line Ups:
MATCH REPORT
1 - Sevilla:Palop, Dani Alves, Boulahrouz, Dragutinovic, Puerta, Keita, Martí, Navas (Maresca, 70’), Renato (De Mul, 56’), Duda (Diego Capel, 66’) and Luis Fabiano.
0 - Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro, Torres, Diarra, Gago (Baptista, 46’), Balboa (Saviola, 62’), Guti, Robinho and Raúl.
GOALS:
1-0, 26′. Luis Fabiano, from a penalty.
REFEREE: Alfonso Pérez Burrull.
HIGHLIGHTS: First leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Venue: Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. Attendance: 40,000. Real Madrid President Ramón Calderón and Sevilla Premier José María del Nido attended the match.
First Half
As I watched the game, I couldnt help but notice we didnt play well. The ‘penalty’ was bogus, although I do not understand what Sergio Ramos was doing trying to win the ball from that position, he should have tryed to block the shot from Duda. My major gripe about the game.
First chance to Sevilla, Luis Fabiano getting in and having a good shot that Casillas did very well to parry away. Jesus Navas looked lively all game, and Raul came up with a 1v1 with Palop and he lost out. A ridiculous bicylce kick by Renato was pushed away by Casillas, although it looked like he was way offsides?
Cannavaro and Pepe looked nervous together, more from a lack of time to gel, and Sergio Ramos was at right back while Torres was at left back (solid back four, dont know what the problem was). The afore mentioned penal was given, Luis Fabiano put it away and Sevilla were 1 up. Guti and Robinho were dictating play for us, Guti almost scoring with a volley. Balboa seemed lost at times and then at other times fired up, he just needs to settle his nerves and i firmly believe he will be a good player for us.
A tense and somewhat sloppy interchanged gave Robinho a chance but it just wasnt going in. The defending was very poor from Madrid in the first half, and Casillas flapped at a free kick presenting Luis Fabiano with a clear shot that he put wide.
Second Half
The Beast came on for Gago, who was ineffective when partnered with Diarra. Just not enough imagination from him yet, but im patient. Guti out wide? Well he really wasnt, technically Robinho was the second striker but it looked like my favorite formation in the world, the 4-3-2-1. Balboa and Robinho as the wingers, Guti the free role. Thing is, Raul is not a lone striker, at all, so it really wasnt working, even if they sorta looked like a 4-4-2 most of the time defensively.
Anyways, on comes The Beast, and Pepe (he should be called the beast, he is ugly enough) has a header on goal. Saviola came on to make it a straight out 4-4-2, and he really should have got a penal. Conspiracy against Madrid, no. Shitty call by the shitty Spanish refs, most definately. If they can give Sevilla a penal then you should stay consistent and give us one. Stay classy Spanish refs, you have always sucked balls. Anyways, doesnt matter we should have played better, Capel and Keita are two favs of mine and Sevilla has a competent squad and a 1-0 lose at the Sanchez Pijuan is not a terrible result. Real were poor in truth. Schuster better start delivering the Fancy Football cause this is getting ridiculous.

I dled the game and will watch it later tonight. I don’t follow La Liga that often, but I want to make more of an effort this year. Plus any team with Diarra (Mahamadou, not Alou) on it earns points in my book.

Real seem to have lost the knack of buying good players..we had such exciting players..it’s boring to watch Real play these days…Schuster WAKE UP !!!

Missed the game, only saw the highlights… I saw the back four lineup and i wondered the same: why wasn’t it more solid?

Inara- I am glad you have decided to follow La Liga. Its my favorite, Ligue 1 a close second. Diarra is a menace for any team, love him.
John- Hold your tongue, Drenthe and Sneijder were just bought, two young exciting players. Steve-arino has a recap of both the signings and i will put thier presentation up later today. Also Real is looking to use more of its youth players, something it did not do during the Perez era, which i firmly stand behind
Steve- I wonder if Fabio and Pepe just dont have the chemistry yet, and also Sergio Ramos had a bad game, simple as that, which is strange because he is always good.

Hey - I’ve been travelling and away from the net, but some quick comments: Shit calls by refs, Madrid have no direction as a team. Schuster needs to step it up and start calling the shots. We can have all the greatest players in the world, but without someone to clue them into form, they’re just gonna run around like they did against Sevilla. Reign ‘em in, Schuster.
