The Grapevine 8/28
By: Corey | August 28th, 2007When I woke up yesterday and had 2 hours to kill before class started (yes, my day doesnt begin til 12 everyday) I figured I would use some of that time writing a post, buttttt unfortunately there was nothing goin on really yesterday. Today is a different matter, and since I woke up at the same time, Im all set. This song is quasi-popular but I remember the days when it was not, so here you go:
As usual, ignore the video of crappy artwork and listen to the music. Also, my campus wireless network is allowing for a quality rate of streaming again so maybe I will be able to see the game this weekend or the Santiago Bernabeu trophy on Wednesday against Sporting Lisboa. Lets hope…
-First we begin on a rather sad and scary note. Royston Drenthe was involved in a traffic accident yesterday morning. He supposively hit a cop car while making a U-turn at 4:30 am. The cop was okay and Drenthe was not drunk, so I guess he will be fine. But 4:30am and you hit a cop car? Kind of sketch buddy. Glad both parties are okay though
- As Haran pointed out, the quartet of Balboa, De La Red, Granero and Adrian Gonzalez are all being looked at as loan canidates by various Spanish teams. Now heres the thing, I think loans for youth team guys are great, I always support it. But, what happens far to often is that Reals loaned youth players never come back, and we supply the rest of Spain with some great players. The Twilight Zone if you will. So Balboa and De La Red stay, but Granero and Gonzalez can go because they are much younger and probably wont figure much this year. Also, Soldado, despite reports, will not be leaving on loan, trust me. Who is your main man at the Real Madrid Offside?
- Marcelo could go on loan at Real Valladolid. Interesting, this may be a good move, since Drenthe is now surely gonna be playing at left back in reserve to Heinze. And of course theres Torres there too.
- Dani Alves could be on his way to Real, but to be honest, I dont want him. Stick with Sergio Ramos and Miguel Torres please Schustie, they are both the future. Salgado is the past but looked better in preseason, so another right back is stupid, I dont care if Alves is played further forward, he is not a right winger, dont fuck him up like Cicinho was.
- Ex-Real prodigy Juan Mata may be on loan at Zaragoza this season, not a surprise. Another not so much a surprise, poor young lads loosing their giflriends to older guys on the first weekend of college. It happens, cause Ive done it.
- Julio Baptista, like Soldado, is always in the transfer rumors, despite stating he wants to stay and play for Real. Let him stay, if he disappoints then think about a sale, but to be honest, selling him just to “balance” the books doesnt make sense, they wont recoup any of the 40 or so million they wasted on Arjen Robben. I dont think I need to say it any clearer, Reals transfer policy pretty much blows.
- If you dont already read his weekly column, please do. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=457547&root=europe&cc=5901&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1
Phil Ball is the man, he knows Spain, and because he does I do, so read it, enjoy it, tell me what you think, but 9 times out of 10 he is right. Just like me
- The Santiago Bernabeu trophy is on Wednesday, Gabriel Heinze should make his debut against Spoting, and we should win this trophy. http://www.realmadrid.com/articulo/rma42166.htm I wont waste mine and your time with an in-depth preview of this, it happens every year and we end up loosing every year, may the ghost of Santiago rest in peace.
What ever happened to Office Linebacker Terry Tate? Dont know, but loved his videos.
Off to my two management classes and work, pzzzz.

That thing about Drenthe is just sort of odd, like you suggest. 4:30 am + cop + U-turn (legal or illegal in Spain?) - alcohol = ?
Cop was hurt, but I assume that Drenthe will not be facing charges cause he wasn’t drunk, which is a good thing for everyone involved. Weird situation.

Goal.com is reporting that Drenthe was navigating by GPS, which told him to turn, and he was paying so much attention to the directions that he hit the police car. He is new to the city, so it is a bit understandable that he was distracted by the GPS at 4:30 am. He was driving slow and not drunk, as you noted, and the cop just has minor whiplash, so hopefully this is just a lesson learned.

We donnntttt need Daniel Alves. It looks like a typical Real reasoning. First, there is news everyday about the player coming then there is denial.. then bam… he’s a Real player. I think the most worried now would be Torres. He’s behind Heinze (maybe Drenthe if he doesn’t play up, which I think he’ll) on the left and behind Ramos on the right. and you get another RB, he would want to leave.
saw the sevilla match live and Puerta collapsing on the field. truly dreadful. nice lad. May his soul rest in peace.Posted from

I think the biggest reason Madrid is even talking about Alves is because Barcelona is rumoured to be interested (Alves would actually be a great signing for Barca, and cause for Merengue concern). Madrid showing interest could hike up the already astronomical price that Sevilla is asking, which might run interference if the catalans are actually interested (what do you think, Isaiah?). In any event though, I don’t want him, and I hope that Madrid doesn’t throw away a bunch of money on another player they don’t really need (i.e. Robben). Side note, if Sevilla lose Alves and Ramos, it will be their eviction notice from the top four.
I’m with you on De la Red and Balboa, Corey, they’d better stay - and I also am an avid reader of Phil Ball’s columns. Now that I know you read them too, I’ll save myself the embarassment of stealing lines from them and claiming them as my own!

With the sudden death of Antonio Peurta, RIP, I dont believe that Sevilla will be making any more moves in the transfer market, so Alves will stay until the winter. I also dont think Schuster will bring anyone else in, Calderon already layed out a shit load of cash so I think our market is done barring a sale, but I dont want anyone to be solde either.
