Liveblog: Real Madrid v Espanyol

By: Steve | March 7th, 2008

Hala Madrid! Well, Madridistas, there’s only one thing left to play for this season, and that’s our defense of La Liga title. I suppose the bright side is Schuster has no more excuses. Even if you’re missing some key guys, there’s no way we shouldn’t be able to focus everything on the Liga now. His ass is on the line, that is fo shizzle.

Just a note on the last two posts… There was some heated commenting going on. Unfortunately, a couple silly Roma fans came over to troll and flame, and we got suckered in. This is not a criticism of any of the other Roma fans who came around to give good comments, to them I offer my thanks. Madridistas, let’s keep our heads in the game and focussed on helping Los Merengues… they seem to need everything they can get.

Anyways, I’m only half-heartedly apologizing in advance for the lack of any liveblog because I’m actually off to Madrid to visit some friends this weekend, and my buddy Jose scored a pair of tickets to the Espanyol match! So I’ll be there, in the majestic Bernabeu, watching our beloved whites, likely wearing a new Robinho jersey, holding up my 2005 Champions League scarf… woohoo! Don’t cry for me, Madridistas…

Thank god Sneijeder is back, i haven’t been really impressed with him since early in the season, but obviously when he was in we were winning so that’s got to amount to something.

On another note, am I the only one that has really been impressed with Drenthe? The commentators seem to think he’s sh-te. I think this kid is the real deal and as he continues to grow he’s going to be a force.

    How about:
Torres, Canna, Pepe, Heinze; Sneijder, Guti, Drenthe; Raul, Baptista right behind.

Corey sorry to ruin your diversity week with yesterdays blog (shoulder shrug)…ah, those things are overrated anyhow.

No problem, you forgot a player in your lineup, I am assuming it would be Robinho

ah yes, little Robinho. How could i forget that guy. Alright, well time to rebound and show everyone we’re down but not out.

Considering the fact that he could barely drag himself off the pitch Wednesday and hasn’t practiced since then because of a severely bruised ankle, I really don’t think Cannavaro will be an effective starter on Saturday. Better perhaps to start off with Torres-Pepe-Heinze-Marcelo and put Canna in if the experiment isn’t going well.

Steve: HALA MADRID!! So fucking exciting man, I hope you see los Merengues win!

elmeromero: I’ve been singing Drenthe’s praises for a while now - I love his pace, he’s got some tricks on the ball, and offers the one thing our two other left wingers don’t seem too hot on - a good cross. I hope to see more of him this season.

Louise: Is Salgado out for a while after his match injury on Wednesday? If both he and Cannavaro are out, then your suggested back 4 is pretty much the only option. That seems to be our biggest problem in the back this season - we have some talented players, but we’re usually left with only a couple possible options - none optimum. But a good question (and it pretty much is a question of left back): what would the ideal back 4 be?

Corey: Garay would be a great pick-up, anything will keep my hopes alive for him, even goal.com. However, my #1 prospect reportely just extended his contract with Lyon. Sigh…

And lastly, a big apology to everyone for turning this place in to a playground name-calling match. I lost my head when Madrid got kicked out of the CL AGAIN, and I definitely took the bait when prodded, and lost whatever grace a supporter of the losing side can claim. I truly apologize; I’ll keep my cool in the future.

Does anyone know how long Ruud is due to be out of action?

Ideal, John? Depends on what you’re trying to do, but overall (although some might see it as too defensive on the left, I just don’t trust Marcelo yet):

    Sergio Ramos-Pepe-Canna-Heinze

It’s doable–Canna will be fine by next week if he doesn’t play tomorrow and SR returns the week after that. Just have to keep our fingers crossed on injuries to Pepe and Heinze.

I actually might see your defensive LB, and raise it one with Torres, Louise. It’s a sacrifice on the attack, but when choosing between a somewhat (tactically) dirty Argentine and a young graduate of Castilla, my reasoning gets a little faulty. Either option, though, would at least taken on the appearance of a world class back 4.

And speaking of Castilla I mentioned in the last post that Villarreal are hunting for De la Red, and Juande made Granero the latest addition to his Spanish Tottenham wish list. I hope Madrid recognizes the value of these two players, and does what’s necessary to retain them. What does everyone else think?

It would be great to see Granero continue to improve and play on bigger stages, a few years at Tottenham might do him some good, but only with the idea that he’ll be back at Real soon, so maybe some sort of deal with a right of first refusal clause or whatever after 2 years. For the time being, I would hate to see him wasted like Soldado has, it bothers me but his growth has actually been stunted by being on the Real squad this year.

I suppose you’re probably right, elmeromero - there’s not much room for a new guy in the midfield right now. But yeah, let’s make sure neither of these two get away. De la Red shows some promise as a forward, and I see that as a position we need to be thinking about in the future. Though this is hardly the year to criticize either Ruud or Raul, neither of them are getting any younger. (Actually, I think Raul might be…)

I really like Torres and he was great in the second half of last season, but we haven’t seen that form at all this year. I just think at this point, we need to go with the veteran who will best shore up the defense and if they can stay healthy, institute a rotation system as was originally envisioned for the season, giving Torres more chances to shine on the left, which is where he has seemed most comfortable.
