09/03 Grapevine
By: Corey | September 3rd, 2008So with international call-ups, Schuster has not had to many men to train. So today Schuster decided to call up a few youth team players, namely Chema Anton and Gorka of Castilla, and Marcos Cerrudo and Carlos Martin of the C team. These young guys got some good experience with the remaining first team players that were around to train. The league, after only one jornada, is off for the international break where two World Cup qualifiers will be played this weekend and next week Wednesday. We will have a host of tired players for our second league game against Numancia at home.
Also, the official Real Madrid squad numbers have been released, here is a list of them. I just ordered that super cool blue away kit with Robinho De la Red’s name on the back!

Also, Real Madrid Castilla won their first league outing 2-0 against “the Neighborhood” Vecindario. Goals from Adam Szalai and Fran Rico ensured a strong start to Castilla’s promotion push. From what I read, it seemed they played very well, with Julen Lopetegui instilling some good footballing principles in his pupils. Juan Palanca also made his debut, while new Castilla signing Edouard Kabamba is still not fit to play with the team. The 21 year old forward was purchased from Standard Liege, who Real has a cooperative agreement with. He may be ready for Castilla’s next match, but we will see.
The lineup featured a 4-3-2-1, with Szalai the lone forward and Albero Bueno and Juan Palanca as attacking midfielders. They were then backed up by Fran Rico and Modrego as off-center midfielders and David Mateos as the DM. The defense has changed little from last year, with Chema Anton, Gary, and Javier Velayos starting along with the returning Agus. Antonio Adan as of now the starting keeper, but he has Felipe Reyes breathing down his neck.
Here is a list of some of the ins and outs in the Real academy. I thought this would be useful:

The academy has lost alot of players unfortunately, and even though Castilla signed some decent replacements, I worry that we are letting to many young players go. Maybe a change in the rules in Spain to allow Liga teams to sign pro-deals with young talents at 16 would be helpful. Or atleast pre-contract agreements. Have a good weekend everyone, barring any major news I will take the week off! Go Spain! And check out Dancy, the newest member of the Real Madrid staff. She will be providing us with liveblogs and the occassional post. Welcome Dancy

Quick diversion to international ball here: Now that Silva and Torres are ruled out for the next two matches, any guesses as to what the line up will be?
Here’s mine:
Casillas; Ramos, Puyol, Albiol, Capdevilla; Navas, De la Red, Senna, Xavi, Cazorla; Guiza
I like the setup because Navas and Cazorla would provide oodles of width, De la Red and Xavi would represent some serious playmaking ability, and some extra goal potential. I think Guiza would be better than Bojan for this line up: more experience and a better target man in the middle. Senna would continue to be briliant in picking channels and picking off counter attacks, and I think the back line explains itself.

Whoops – I was looking at the call up list from the Denmark friendly. Here’s the revised line up (complete squad list belew for reference):
Casillas; Ramos, Puyol, Albiol, Capdevila; Iniesta, Cesc, Senna, Xavi, Cazorla; Villa
Is it just me, or does my first squad (posted above) make a little more sense than this one. Iniesta on the right?
Goalkeepers: Casillas & Reina
Defenders: Albiol, Capdevila, Juanito, Iraola, Navarro, Puyol & Sergio Ramos.
Midfielders: XavI, Xabi Alonso, Diego Capel, Cazorla, Cesc Fábregas, Iniesta
Forwards: Güiza & Villa.Posted from

hey John, judging from AS, it appears Del Bosque is still tinkering, but here’s today’s lineup that he tried:
Casillas, Ramos, Puyol, Albiol, Capdevila, Senna, Iniesta, Xavi, Cazorla, Capel, and Villa.
So Cazorla and Capel replace Torres and Silva, not Cesc. A bit surprising, but I guess Cesc will continue to be SuperSub. This lineup also scored 2 goals today in training, 1 from Iniesta and 1 from Sergio.

Thanks Dancy – any idea which side Cazorla played?
I actually like the idea of leaving Cesc as a super-sub. I think in the future he’ll be Spain’s long term first team creative midfielder, but I think it’s wise to allow him to get comfortable in the role, first.

As I expected, Sneids was appropriately rewarded with the recently vacated number 10. Our attack looks much more creative and fluid with him running the midfield, I wish he was healthy!
Welcome Dancy! Looking forward to your insights and contributions! Thanks for the youth update Corey.

John, Cazorla played on the side that scored the 2 goals, ie I believe it was first team XI vs second team.
James, thanks for the warm welcome! It looks like good ol’ Sneijder is recovering faster than expected too!

Sneijder will still be out for another month or so, but he will return ahead of schedule. Lets hope he doesnt have a lapse of the injury, we dont need another Metzelder or Robben situation this year.
