All About Granero
By: Corey | July 24th, 2009Esteban was back with the squad today, training just like the rest of the players, and it appears he has slipped in almost unnoticed. He was running around like it was 2007 and he was trying to impress Schuster enough to stay in the first team. Now its 2009, and he has, like Ruben de la Red before him, returned to Real after two years away to live a life long dream of becoming a merengue. He did not have a big glitzy presentation nor a big presser that all the media outlets covered vehemently. But the official site seemed enthusiastic enough to provide a little bio on the canterano’s life long journey through the many divisions of Real Madrid. Here it is:
A youth-teamer as of the age of eight, Esteban Granero’s dream of landing on Real Madrid’s first team has come true. Now 22, the midfielder has dedicated almost his whole life to the club. He first signed on following the Torneo Social, where he caught the eye of several scouts; something he continues to do to this day. He has won championships, led team’s to promotion, lifted trophies and also experienced the agony of defeat, but his maturity both on and off the pitch has prevented him from ever throwing in the towel.
Granero first suited up for Real Madrid with the Under-10 squad; a division he would score 83 goals in. The years passed by and Granero continued to improve. In 1999 he captained the Under-14 team that won the International Football Seven Tournament in Barcelona. Granero scored the game-winner and was named Best Player of the championship.
At the age of 17, Granero joined Real Madrid C and was soon the center of attention of not just the team, but of Real Madrid Castilla coach Michel, as well. In December of 2005/06 he debuted with the ‘B’ team against Albacete and finished the match with a goal assist. That same season he went on to win the Under-19 European Championship in Poland.
He started with the u-10s. That is local lad for you. No matter how great Kaka is, there is no substitute for that kind of status as a canterano. His status is only enhanced when he holds his first presser and drops lines like “I accepted the offer (to come back to Real) before it was ever laid on the table. It may sound like demagoguery to say that the money doesn’t matter, but I think there are more important things. Money took a back seat in my case.” His full press conference is below. It has some interesting quotes in it, and gives a nice little back drop to the man behind the hair.
Welcome to Real Madrid. What does this return mean to you?
Thank you. You know that I spent many years in the academy, but being a member of the first team is a dream come true. I think it is also the first step in fulfilling other dreams, like winning many titles. I now have the chance to fight for a spot as a starter and I will do whatever it takes. You finally returned when it looked like you might stay at Getafe. Did you ever lose hope of coming back?
No. I think every summer is different. There were some doubts this summer, but luckily I made it back. The club’s top brass and the team’s coaching staff have faith in me, and for that I am grateful. I am now in a good position and it’s up to me to earn a spot. I am very grateful for the confidence placed in me.What other things do you dream about?
Suiting up in the first team dressing room is the right path to be on, but I will not settle with just that. I am an ambitious person and I will fight for a spot and learn a lot. This year’s goal is to win many titles because that is what Real Madrid deserves. Were you assured that you will continue here?
I will continue playing here.Have you spoken to Pellegrini about your chances of playing?
We did get to speak and he told me he has faith in me. He said that I was a member of the team and that I will have the same opportunities as the rest. I am not asking for matches, but just the opportunity to earn a spot. It doesn’t depend on me. I am where I am because the coaching staff has faith in me.Have you spoken to Cristiano Ronaldo?
We greeted one another. He is a pleasant person and there will be plenty of time to get to know one another. How do you feel being able to work by his side?
It makes me proud and I know I can learn a lot from him. He is one of the best players in the world, if not the best, so having the chance to assist him as a midfielder is incredible. What do you think the team can win this season?
I don’t think we can settle for nothing. We cannot give up on anything, and everything is possible with players like Cristiano Ronaldo and the many others who have arrived.Do you feel any pressure after hearing Valdano say that the door is closed to future signings but that you were the exception?
I don’t feel any pressure. I do feel very responsible. Being a member of this squad is complicated and it has to be earned. I am proud to wear the Real Madrid shirt, both in matches and during training. Why is it that you turned down money to play for Real Madrid?
I accepted the offer before it was ever laid on the table. It may sound like demagoguery to say that the money doesn’t matter, but I think there are more important things. Money took a back seat in my case. .Abidal advised Ribery to sign for Barrcelona. What advice would you give him?
I recommend that he signs for Real Madrid because we are a competitive team and he can learn a lot here. Every football has Real Madrid at the top of his list.Did you recommend that Parejo sign for Getafe?
My two years at Getafe were great. I was treated very well and played a lot of matches in both La Liga and in Europe. I learned a lot from my teammates and coaches. Sometimes you have to take the long way around to get to Real Madrid, and spending time with Getafe served me well.Do you prefer a huge presentation or something more intimate?
I was presented yesterday afternoon and I was anxious to train and to meet my teammates. There is plenty of time to play at the stadium. What did you learn at Getafe?
A lot. I gained a lot of experience. I played a lot of matches in Primera Division and Europe. I played in several positions, both in the midfield and along the flanks, and I think that versatility will help me.Do you think the arrival of Xabi Alonso would hurt your chances of playing?
I don’t think so. It is not one of my concerns. I would love for Real Madrid to have the best players to be able to share a dressing room with and to compete against for a spot in the starting eleven.Does joining Real Madrid hamper your progress because of all the players who are being signed?
On the contrary. It is a step forward. Playing will be a little trickier, but it will make the challenge that much more interesting and I decided to take that step in my career. I don’t think it will hamper anything, but rather that it is a step forward.
To read more about Granero’s return, you can check out AS, who has a little video on him training and such. Nice to see him back, and he will take up the mantle that De la Red held for me as the cantera with the man crush. Here is to hoping Granero can carve out a spot on the bench first, then a starting spot either in the center of the midfield or in place of one of the galacticos in case of an injury, god forbid. Welcome back Granero!
Also on the docket today is Dani Parejo’s potential move to Getafe first on loan, but with an option for a purchase also. To my mind, the deal has not been completed yet, but its just a matter of time and formality. It is a good move, as we have seen both De la Red and Granero really come in to their own at Getafe with a good deal of playing time. Soldado had a good first season there, and former Real players Adrian Gonzalez and Jordi Codina will also help him acclimate with the squad. Adrian Gonzalez should see more time this year with Michel (his father) as coach, and I think we can expect the same for Parejo. Not a like for like replacement for Granero, but he is a quality player who just needs to learn the trade at the highest level.
When the deal is completed, as well as any deals for Huntelaar, Drenthe or any other players, we will be covering it here. Also, there is news of Xerez being demoted back to the third division because of paperwork troubles…? I have to read up on it more but, it would be a shame to have crappy Betis stinking up La Liga again in place of an equally bad but more interesting story in Xerez. Even though they have something like 16 players in their first team right now…

Without making comparisons, I’ll just say good luck to you all this season, in all competitons, and we’ll how things go. Both clubs have lots of hard work in terms of making new players solidify within the system, etc.
I do know that anyone who claims La Liga isn’t the world’s best now is kidding themselves. Even Malaga is giving Villa all that it can handle.
E, I respect what you have to say, certainly. But I think that any further discussion would be tempered by club perspective, right? It’s the same way that AS said the Ibra deal was worth almost 100m. Of course they will say that. That’s their party line.
But independent observers will concur that Eto’o was all but worthless to Barca. With the relationship as it was, we couldn’t play him, nor could we keep him. That was clear. Citeh was the only bid for him, at 25m. 25m from Citeh is like 5m from a real club, but no real clubs bid on him, because of the situation. It’s easier to wait a season and snag him on a free.
Laporta didn’t say that we don’t spend a lot on players. Recall the roughly 40m spent on Marc Overmars, and 30+m on Dani Alves. The Ibra deal is a player swap, plus cash which, again perspective-dependent, you will either view as the sum total of every cent involved in every player, or the cash value, or some point in the middle.
Which is why I say that I respect your view of the matter.

Technically, if Eto’o was REALLY pissed, he could have singed a pre-contract with any team he wanted on a Bosman in January (only 5 months!). Just saying.Posted from

You bet, Hector. That’s why I think Laporta was sweating in his Guccis that this deal could happen.
Speaking of, here’s the pertinent Laporta quote that puts the two deals into perspective:
“We could go into debt like Madrid but it isn’t our way of operating.”
Yes, it’s a little arrogant. Admittedly. But that’s Laporta.

Thats mighty arrogant of Laporta, but I think he is feeling the heat after Real made so many moves, which is why he has said some of these hypocritical things. Lets not forget he was pretty close to being driven out of the city with pitchforks and torches not to long ago before he hired Pep.

Kxevin I have another laporta quote for u my friend ” unlike madrid We don’t buy super stars we make them”
Lol ibra has been made alrightneways i dont see anything wrong with spending huGe on thw ibras and kakas of the world Only thing we trying to point out here is laporta ’s hypocrisy

Laporta was definitely feeling some heat Corey. You guys had one hell of a summer, the envy of any club’s, and one of the best in history. Some of the Laporta comments were envy, frankly.
Andres, I think the “we make them” comment was aimed at Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol and Messi all being canteranos. And yes, it was presidential boasting, trying to take some of the sting out of being bested.

Kxevin, the correct valuation of the deal would be: 40 + eto (20) + hleb loan(?)= around 60 to 65 million. Believe it or not, with a striker with a goal ration like eto’s, even on his last year of contract he is still very valuable, just like henry was.
Any ways, unlike the fiasco that barca fans made when we started spending, i think the deal is for the better of la liga, and should prevail the league to the highest of stages. Clasico in the champions league final? that would be amazing! But we must all calm down. Real and barca, despite being rivals, have one thing in common this year, they are going to be living up to high expectations and a lot of pressure. I hope this doesn’t hamper real’s chances, although i personally dont have high expectations for this year. I believe this year will be a molding season, while the next would be the most effective. I know a lot of you will disagree, but we have to be realistic and see that pelligrini has a lot of work to do to introduce 5 or 6 new players into a squad. I hope he can do it.
On another note, Hunter has been told he is not wanted, so he should be out soon, or will he?

Very true, Bassam. We only wish Eto’o were that valuable. We just couldn’t figure out why nobody bid on him except for Citeh.
You’re right about the immense pressure. For us, there’s nowhere to go but down. For you, the expectations are gigantic. Who made the comment that anything short of the Champions League final would be a disappointment? Man! That’s intense.
I’m just hoping for an injury-free season for both clubs, and championships decided on the pitch.
Good question on Huntelaar. Both clubs again mirror each other in having players that won’t leave. We, however, are left with only one, thanks to the Ibra deal: Gudjohnsen. Y’all have a whole pile of Dutchmen to deal with.
Was the threat of not registering Robben if he didn’t leave a real one?

Apparently according to FIFA rules, we have actually have to pay you guys something in the neighborhood of 500,000 euros for “solidarity rights” from the Eto’o transfer because hey, you did sell him to us from your cantera
. So yeah, maybe arrogant Laporta ain’t totally bad, huh? Another little for the Buy Xabi Alonso kitty.PS All us culés know Laporta is an arrogant windbag (if that’s what you wanted to hear). He is a lawyer after all
. Still we stand him because he’s leaving the club in the black and out of debt and with 3 ligas, 2 UCL’s, and 1 Copa, and counting. Not a bad term, at all. We let him talk shit as long as that keeps up. Cheers and here’s to an injury free, decided on the field battle this season.

Kxevin, I think the issue with Eto’o and no takers was his wages. That simple. Good luck to the lion at Inter. He is going to be awesome.

We all know the constant ´anything you can do´ mentality between Barça and Madrid, the news programmes here thrive on it and we´re treated to ´you said´, ´he said´ on a daily basis. We can jibe each other at the local and it´s all a bit fun.
The 2-6 drubbing however was not at all fun and we suffered for a long time for that, well until Florentino made the Kaká deal which provided the necessary distraction.
Barça needed a galactico signing to steal a bit of the limelight and my bet is they will do a really low key presentation to show Madrid that they are a real sports club not some glitzy showbiz outfit ( actually I thought the Nessa dorma video majorly tacky but still ).
I still think that Villa would have fitted far better and pleased the fans far more ( Italian football is of little interest here and the average fan won´t really know much about Ibra .Posted from

I personally am glad they didn´t get Villa who I´d like to see end up in the PL to show that tosser of a Presidente that you tell the guy to find himself a team one minute and then refuse to sell him. He himself said at the confeds cup that the uncertainty was affecting him badly.
Playing in the PL would improve him for the selección for next year´s world cupPosted from

Villa seems like a genuinely simple, nice, sensitive guy. It showed that he has been negatively affected by the whole mess at the Confed Cup both in his play and his statements. A happy Villa is vital for Spain next summer. I really do hope the guy ends up happy. He’s a good dude. ¿España va primero, no? He needs to be at his best for country if not club next summer.

Labomba if they don’t give ibra a CR or Kaka like presentation then its their lost , because those big unveiling did not only make the players feel home but they also made us a lot of dinero!
Hector I totally agree with you best of luck to el guaje next season ( cept when he faces us ) like Labomba I think he would have been the better option for you gents because he brings everything eto’o brings and MORE Zlatan on the other hand although more technically gifted than both will not IMO be as good for barca as people think because
first- he is not the target man they think they’re getting ( he is tall but still he is not even good at heading the ball in ) he is best used as a support striker and barca certainly won’t change their formation to accommodate him ,
2nd he doesn’t have eto’o’s work rate which will make it hard for him to make it with your super team I see him and guardiola goin at it
3rd he shines most when he is the star of the team which he won’t be due to the precense of messi , iniesta and henry ( lol that’s funny isn’t it ? Since I think we ll have the same problem with CR )
4th he is ANTI Tap ins which most of the chances he will get will be , you thought eto’o missed a lot of sitters? Wait until you see ibra lol
Last but not least he tends to choke when needed the most he was that way at ajax , juve and inter but he might not have that problem at barca considering that he will have 4 world class players around him
But hey I could be wrong because football and its players are unpredictable that is what make this game so beautifulPosted from

Having said all that barcelona are STILL the team to beat but if we could hang with them till the end of of the season with that mediocre team we had last season then I like our chances with this new team

Fair enough on Ibra, Andres. Like you said, its futbol so we will see. You may just see more of a natural poacher like Bojan making the off the ball runs in the box and Ibra playing left forward for us. Our front three switch a lot so I think he won’t be a pure box striker. He is much more of a threat on the wing than Samu though. I do disagree on the aerial ability part. I’ve seen him play occasionally since he was at Ajax and he is good in the air. Also, you really can’t teach 6′3-6′4. We’ll see how the experiment goes, I guess.
I want La Liga to be the best league in the world. You gents certainly helped that a lot with all the acquisitions this summer. However, I don’t want it to be the SPL with us two being Rangers and Celtic. I want the other teams to step up. I don’t know if the point total accumulated by last year’s RM squad was as much a function of them playing well or a reflection of the rest of La Liga’s sad state. I’m just not sure. That said, lets look at where the other top 4 teams are at?
- Atletico Madrid we all know has a world class offense but their atrocious defense last year cost them. Asenjo and Juanito, a capped international who IMO is a very good Liga CB (what a bargain that was!) will go a long way to making them a threat.
- Sevilla, I’m not sure. Their academy always pumps out good players and their scouting is among the best but I’m not sure of Jimenez and this current roster. Kanoute is the real deal though. Navas has to be more consistent although he’s awesome when he is on and Capel has to prove he can do more than dive, run with his head down, and look like Fabio’s rejuvenated self.
- Valencia have to make do with just about their same roster from last year. I was very impressed with Emery’s tactics against us in the second leg after we massacred them 4-0 first time around.
- Villareal are intriguing this time around. Rossi is already a bonafide starter for the Azzuri. He could have a break-out star season. We all know Cazorla. A lot will depend on Marcos Senna’s health. Jonathan Pereira is a very underrated, fast, technical winger who can compliment Cazorla, and may just be a star in the making. They will be fun to watch.

Andrés, how did the presentation make a lot of dinero? The entrance was free.
Ibra will be presented tomorrow so we´ll see.
I don´t think Barcalona needs to evacuate in August as it´s by the sea, so if they do do a razzmatazz number there should be plenty of interest.
If Ronaldo had been presented in a week or so´s time he wouldn´t have got half the numbers, it´s over 40º nowPosted from

Hector I once again agree with you , atletico ’s new acquisitions will surely help them push for the league and if they turn out to be as good as they were for their previous teams who knows ? their biggest problem over the past couple of seasons tho has been inconsistency if they can be consistent they will be a force to reckon with I think they’re the only team who were able to beat barca without parking the bus last season and they surely were the better team against us at the bernabeu when we drew against them thanx to an offside goal
Sevilla have that same inconsistency problem and I agree with you on manolo
Valencia … I don’t think will be able to do much I see them reaching a CL spot at bestVillareal are tough as always
But this is how I see it barcelona are the favorites to win everything again then after you gents its us then atletico then villarealLabomba o lol my bad I didn’t think it was for free

Even though the entrance to the presentations was free, im sure Perez still found ways to make money from them. He probably just sold a lot of advertising boards and other such stuff
Posted from

Well, if you think about it, atletico still have some problems they need to work on to compete. First of all they need a backup striker. Forlan or aguero injured, and their attacking power is zero. They also need to work on their left back spot, but they are obviously, just like us, ignoring it!
Villareal are good too. They got nilmar for a club record fee so they are showing initiative. Maybe a couple more signings would do them well. Sevilla need to get some more players. Zokora is not enough. Maybe someone in attack. Kanoute is 32 or 33 now, and he cant play a full season.
Valencia have actually been busy in the transfer market believe it or not. They have added three defenders to their squad and a goalkeeper. They are ignoring other parts of the field though. Don’t know how competitive they are going to be.
We tied with al ittihad. Didnt watch the game. Anything noteworthy?
