Arbeloa Interview on Being a Canterano
By: Corey | October 9th, 2009Alvaro Arbeloa did an interview awhiles back about being a canterano and eventually turning out for the first team. I had it stock translated so its a little messy, but you should get the general point. I always find it interesting to see how cantera players feel about playing for the first, and in this point Arbeloa took the extreme long way around to getting in to the first team. Not that its a bad thing, but his thoughts on the experience are worth a read. Its also worth noting that some of his experiences could mirror what players like Dani Parejo, Agus, Palanca and Negredo are going through this season as they battle for a recall come the summer of 2010.
Here is the poorly translated article:
Alvaro Arbeloa is a canterano of pro, a person and soccer player example whom after passing through the categories inferiors of Real Madrid, a day he had to leave the Club to continue demonstrating that amply he was enabled to comprise of the first madridista group. Said and done. Today next to Raul, Squares, Guti or Granero, comprise of that select nucleus of soccer players who have happened through the Factory and have obtained their dream. Who was going it to you to say years ago.
Before player of the quarry and now you are the lateral one of the Real Madrid, that aspire to gain it everything, and of the Spanish, favorite Selection to obtain the World-wide one. I have arrived here with very many work, and is certain that years ago he was unthinkable. One fought to arrive up to here but it is seen too much far. The things have gone to me well and now I am where I am, fighting by everything and happy in Real Madrid. You already secured the ascent with Castile, you remember certainly it very well… Clearly, those things do not forget. It was a wished ascent very reason why it supposes the Club to have to the branch in Second Division. It was special we obtained because it in Santiago Bernabéu before 60,000 people.
All those memories are tuna, hopefully that can soon repeat something thus with Castile of now. Forms leave from the history of the Afredo I gave Stefano. It was called on to us to inaugurate the field. Memory that returned of a party with the first equipment and we later released it, before the Malaga B, a party that we were able to gain and del that I keep a good memory. And now the first equipment counts on a strong presence of canteranos like you. Yes, that is what we want all. To be an equipment of first world-wide stature and that there is presence of quarry players.
There are three players who take more than ten years here that are canteranos and have demonstrated the level that they have. Those that we come from down we want to demonstrate that also we are enabled to play in this equipment. He is impressive to see as it receives the Bernabéu to the men of the house. In the case of Grain Esteban and mine, we have been able to demonstrate that we have the level sufficient to be in the elite and we have gained the right to be in the first equipment.
No longer we are those lads that requested an opportunity and I believe that people thank for it to you. We, by all means, are enchanted. What him makes special to a canterano? In principle, nothing especially. You are not going to play better or worse for being a canterano, but one has sucked what is Real Madrid from down, perfectly knows the Club and its philosophy, and the love to this has it shield more ingrained than people than can come from outside.
Speaking of the cantera, Castilla played against Tenerife B in their league campaign this past weekend, and drew 2-2. Real Madrid C prospect Samu got the start up front with Szalai and scored the games first goal, so interesting to see if he continue to push in to the Castilla team. The midfield continue to look a little underwhelmed on the creative side according to reports, and players like Victor Merchan may be in the mind of coach Alejandro Melendez as he looks for more creativity in a midfield shorn of several creative type this past season.
Considering Arbeloa’s experiences in the cantera and how he developed, I think its worth noting how a player like Samu could eventually end up in the first team some day.
Ficha Técnica
Tenerife B: Toño Ramírez; Jesús, Hernández, Alexis, Rsoquete, Julio de Dios, Juan Ramón, Airam, Germán, Yisomar, Guayo.
Real Madrid Castilla: Adán; Gary, Juanan, Luis Hernández, Marcos Alonso; Mateos, Mosquera, Vázquez (Marcos Tébar, 54’), Raúl Ruiz (Juanfran, 53’); Samu y Szalai (Rubén Ramos, 63’)
Goles: 0-1 Samu (2’); 0-2 Vázquez (42’); 1-2 Airam (62’); 2-2 Airam (86’)

I’ve seen some clips of victor merchan and have been very impressed he strikes me as a guti type player his passing is spot on and he has better ball skills than guti from what I’ve seen
The one i’d like to see make a step up now though is marcos alonso he may be inexperienced but you can’t get worse than marcelo can you ? As a defender that is
I wonder why we spend millions on kids like marcelo and gago with the hope that they’re gonna develop into world class player which I really doubt they will instead of putting that hope in the canteranos , had we not spent money on marcelo and drenthe I’m sure one of those canteranos in question would be in the first team as we speak
Don’t get me wrong i don’t want us to go the atletic bilbao way , aka playing with 11 cantera players and stuff but I think we should stop buying 18 and 19 years old and promote from within instead unless the 18 yr old in question is a true phenom which gago ( de la red and parejo are better than him ) or marcelo aren’t
So what I think we should do is buy 24 and up great players and mix them with our cantera products kinda like what our beloved president santiago bernaberu did , actually we always did that up until the second part of perez’s reignPosted from

Bernabeu* I meant sorry prez
Anyways alipio is almost 18 and is a phenom but how the hell is he gonna make the step up when we spent milllions on two young strikers in benzema and higuain
How will szalai make the step up now ? Will he ever ? The answer is hell no
That’s why I was in favor of buying villa instead of benzema because by the time alipio and players like samu are ready for prime time he’d be in his 30s and ready to make wayI just hope that by the time enzo zidane is ready our midfield won’t be crowded with foreign youngsters
Rant over now

Cule to each his own
but to me it doesnt matter where they “develop” once they graduate from the academy they’re still canteranos of whatever academy in question they’ve graduated from
so arbeloa is a madrid canterano IMO and apparently he seems to think the samePosted from

Cule, did Pique learn his passing and forward runs from Man Utd? He barely played there, and spent one season at Zaragoza where he played more games than his time at United combined and definitely learned more from Milito than from Ferdinand and Vidic. We had Pique in the most crucial years of a player’s development, so I think we can take a lot of credit for his development, cule.

What a stupid discussion. In the case of Pique you could still, to a degree, question the impact and developmental role of Barca. However, Arbeloa was in Real Madrid till the age of 23. He was NEVER loaned out and was pretty well-developed by the time he left, and is in every possible sense a canterano. It was only that the management at the time didn’t give him a chance and Deportivo gave him a platform to display his skills (developed in Real Castilla), resulting in him being signed by Benitez’s Liverpool. If you view his performances at the age of 23 in Castilla and at 26 in Liverpool, there is not a significant difference (except the amount expected to adapt in a new league and the maturity/tactical growth)
Cule, if you want to assert that Real fans are arrogant, please do so only after getting your facts correct. Atleast do a wikipedia search, it doesnt take much time. We might actually respect you if you came up with good arguments based on credible evidence. With only your opinion-derived facts to state, you just seem like a biased fool simply out here to try and ridicule us. We (and every other good discussion-based forum) can do without such.

Every time there´s nit picking going on, it´s Barça fans. Haven´t you got hairs to split on your own blog??
Andrés don´t rise to it, ignoring their comments is far more effective,I´m a teacher and that´s what I tell my 5 year olds and it invariably worksPosted from

Yea guys, don’t rise to the bait of trolls.
Real Madrid has a high quality youth system with a long history. The problem is that we’ve failed to create a starter in our team in the last ~decade. De la Red would propably be that player but he was unlucky. It’s no easy task as in order to develop you need playing time, and when things are so competitive there isn’t much room for experiments and risks. Granero is trying this season, we’ll see how it goes.

I deleted his comments, they were moronic and meant to stir up trouble. As Daryl mentioned to all of us Offside bloggers, we have been besieged by trolls lately, so marking the comments as spam and banning IPs is our only course of action. Please do not respond to them.
