Breaking news: Madrid captures Ajax’s Sneijder

In a seemingly unlikely turnaround of events during an eventful weekend, Real Madrid have secured the services of Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder from Ajax Amsterdam for 27 million euros. The signing marks the second transfer of a Dutch player of this close season after Royston Drenthe, raising the total contingent to three (Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived last year).
In reports on Saturday 11 August, it seemed that the proposed transfer had fallen through, with Ajax rejecting Real’s offer of 24 million euros, standing firm on their 30 million euro demand. However, late Sunday night, a deal was struck with both sides conceding 3 million euros on the transfer fee.
The 23-year-old midfielder, capped 35 times by the Netherlands, will sign a 5-year deal with the club, and will likely play in his favoured central playmaker role, battling Guti and Julio Baptista for playing time, though he has also appeared on the left wing for Ajax. Sneijder enjoyed his best season last year at Ajax, scoring 20 goals in 43 appearances in all club competitions.
