Campaign to Bring Back Canteranos: Granero

Esteban Granero

The Pirate as he is affectionately known as by the Getafe faithful, Esteban Granero is the prototype ‘crack’ that Real Madrid produces yearly. Blessed with sound technique, excellent on field vision and intelligence, and highly mobile, he is one part genius one part enforcer. Adept at playing on the wing or through the middle, he has honed his skills at Getafe for two years after a break out campaign with Castilla as part of the 06-07 class. During his time at Castilla he was known for his playmaking abilities, but also his calm distribution and tough tackling (not accurate tackling, but he goes in hard none the less). If I was to compare him to a player, I would liken him to a more consistent Guti. His skills develop the more he plays and the more responsibility is given to him to create. He does have his problems with consistency, having a rough beginning to this season, but he still shows up for more games then our resident genius Guti.

Two videos of Esteban are below, both showcasing his individual brilliance coupled with his ability to marry that into a team oriented playing style. And of course, you will see why he is called the Pirate!

The required La Fabrica video first of course:

Then a sampling of Granero’s magic in the most recent game he played at the Bernabeu:

Who doesnt love Esteban Granero? This guy is the kind of player I want Real to use game in, game out because he produces consistently and plays with his heart on his sleeve. And he is good. Did I mention that? He was incredible at the Bernabeu the last time he was there, tormenting Marcelo (well….not that hard) and setting up Soldado for a goal. He was also involved in just about everything good attacking wise that Getafe did. The creative fulcrum of the side, he has matured to a level not expected at his age, and I would say he is a like for like substitution for the aging Guti.

He can play on the left or right wing, and this season he has been used primarily on the right. With the addition of Ronaldo to bolster the right wing, it may be tougher for him to get in to the team, and with Kaka most likely to take up the left wing position, it looks even more difficult. Not a like for like with Ronaldo, but he could easily sub in for Kaka and get the play bustling right along, and he has a hell of shot from distance, much like De la Red.

It is still unclear as to whether he will be brought back this summer as there as a bit of a log jam in the midfield. With Kaka, Ronaldo and Robben filling in the wings, and the likes of Van der Vaart, Sneijder and Drenthe all possibilities there too, players will have to be sold before Granero returns. But its looking ever more likely that those three will be departing this summer in favor of Granero being brought in. Like Negredo, Granero does not want to sit the bench for a whole year and will be hesitant to move if he does not see himself playing. But new coach Manuel Pellegrini is a known admirer of Granero, which may make the deal that much easier to complete.

The stories of Roberto Soldado have certainly rang in Granero’s ear as they are both are team mates at Getafe. There is also the precedent of supremely talented Javier Balboa returning to Real to never be used, much like Javi Garcia has had to deal with this year. But with Granero a known Madridista, he may have the temptation to give it a whirl. If not, interest is high in his services, as both Villarreal and Valencia are looking to acquire him in swap deals with Real or separately. His stock will only continue to rise as he is with the Spanish team at the u-21 European Championships in Sweden right now and his playmaking ability could help Spain to another international title.

Although it seems unlikely at this point, but I would love to see Granero back at the Bernabeu for the future. He wont be a starter, much like Negredo, but he will provide excellent cover and I fancy him to keep Kaka out of the team every now and then with his excellent play. Florentino wants the best of the cantera, the best of the foregin players and the best Spanish players in his team. Well kill two birds with one stone and bring back future Spanish international Esteban Granero. It has been unofficially announced that Granero will not be returning to Real this coming year and will be staying with Getafe, although he has been tracked by various other Spanish clubs including Vilarreal. Is there any hope left in seeing Granero in white one day? Let me know your thoughts on Esteban!

yeah, they're rumours that lyon are after huntelaar, so that a swap+cash deal would be possible. a strike force existing out of higuain, raul, benzema and negredo would be great.

  • Cesar1976

Yeah, and that means we can go after benzema!!!!

  • Sombra

i'm actually glad, hope this means negredo is staying

  • Sambit

    Villa staying??? fuck!

  • Corey

As of right now, there is no news on De la Red. As we get close to training camp at the end of July we should know his situation.

  • Sambit

I think Villa's in the bag now.

Corey have you got an update on De La Red for us? I know you said he'd been cleared but there still seems to be quite a bit of doubt hanging over his head. Obviously if he's perfectly fine and has been given the all clear, then theres no need for Xabi, but if there's even a little bit of doubt over DLR, then we've got to get on Xabi straight away because of the importance of that position.

Zidane keeps talking to the press about Ribery but I don't understand what the point in going after him is. We've still got Robben there, and even if he is shipped out I doubt Ribery will accept a bench role, and the only way we can fit him in is if we got with a 4-2-3-1

Can't you preorder the new kit at the rm online store?

  • Cesar1976

I think deep down we all knew this would happen with Florentino; I believe he's afraid of canteranos because of his last experience with all the "pavones", nonetheless, he promised in his campaign he would boost the cantera and his players, but I guess that's just something he said to appease the feelings of all madridistas, and I include myself in that group, who want to see youngsters in the team that bleed white through and through....

Florentino's goal for next season is to win the CL at the Bernabeu, and he's not gonna risk it by using canteranos, even if that's what all fans want

  • labomba

Yes I agree with all the admirers of Granero, especially when you see him play live, he has great positioning and decision making. But from AS today, it seems that the decision to leave him at Geta is final.
Plus all the latest on Dela red is not good, if he plays it will be at his own risk

  • Real_7

well ...i think he should be brought back. if the stories are true and all the dutch players are out, plus the actually useless: gago, guti, javi garcia,he will difenitly get lots of chances to play, becuase i think the new coach will rotate the squad as much possibly can. with granero,de la red ,both lass and diarra, and 2 or three of the cantera players brought up to the first team.i think madrid team will be very strong, plus he will be a regular in the copa matches, for sure a sub when the team is winning..bottom line..they should get him now...

  • Brian

    Thank God:

    @Sambit:

I've always liked Cissokho and those videos justify it even more - if we can sign him or Clichy that will be good enough for left back. Then we move on to centre back.

  • Sambit

just a follow up (i think i love this guy now):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Runs like a gazelle! can you imagine the overlap with Kaka drifting in from the left and this guy creating width.

    the stuff of dreams

  • Sambit

the numbskulls as milan have let this guy slip, just look at him go:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Fast as lightning, solidly built, and seems to be able to run up and down the left flank all day. Some of the tackles and blocks he put on Rooney and Ronaldo were brilliant.

I'd be fucking delighted if we managed to sign him up, and for 15m euros he'd be a fucking bargain at the raw age of 21.

  • Corey

I read that labomba, but its going to be the third year of fans wondering whether or not he will come back, and its torture. And its also a third year where Granero does not know where he will be at the end of the year. It must be pretty difficult for him because he knows if he performs well through the year his club will surely bring him back, but thats not the case. So if he doesnt not perform as well as he did the past two years (which was at a high level), will he be brought back? The club will base its decision on his performances this year, not the past two, so yet again he is under immense pressure. And I know he intends to come back to Real one day, he is a Madridista.

  • labomba

As for Granero, the buy back contract states that he must receive a salary at Madrid of 3 million a year, which they think is too high. They will renew the buy back clause for next year apparently

  • labomba

Yes read the article that Corey posted and think that a loan spell in primera would do them good. If they step up then they could earn a place with the big boys. Excepting Torres of course who is an excellent squad player

  • Andres

Patcook Now how many juniors from your team played this year ? Better pray that your dr evil looking vice president doesn't spend all the kaka money on guiseppe franco's hair growing products

  • none of the juniors will get much time. When you spend more than 30 mill on a player you styart them and Perez is intent on spending at least 30 mill of everyone he buys. I reckon Galacticos dos will collapse quicker than the first one

  • Corey
  • Cesar1976

Anybody know when the new kit will be available, and where can I buy it here in the US????

    Thanks

  • Cesar1976

donovan, I'd love for Granero to play for us this season, but given florentino's lack of love for the cantera, and its products, I don't see that happening; we're talking about the guy who wanted Iker out of the team, so he could sign Gigi Buffon...

I have no hopes for our canteranos under florentino, it's not his modus operandi, we're gonna have to see them blossom on other teams, as mata, Negredo, Granero, Arbeloa, etc, etc, etc have done in the last couple of years, it's just how it is...

  • Donovan

I still think there is a small chance of seeing him play for us this season, but it all depends on who leaves the squad to make room for him. Also maybe his future will be resolved after the under 21 championship. Im still keeping my fingers crossed hoping to see him eventually playing in white some day.

  • James

hahaha he does look like a pirate i never noticed that's awesome

  • Cesar1976

as I wrote on your last post, Granero is not coming back this year, it's official, thanks florentino....
