Campaign to Bring Back Canteranos: Granero
By: Corey | June 17th, 2009The Pirate as he is affectionately known as by the Getafe faithful, Esteban Granero is the prototype ‘crack’ that Real Madrid produces yearly. Blessed with sound technique, excellent on field vision and intelligence, and highly mobile, he is one part genius one part enforcer. Adept at playing on the wing or through the middle, he has honed his skills at Getafe for two years after a break out campaign with Castilla as part of the 06-07 class. During his time at Castilla he was known for his playmaking abilities, but also his calm distribution and tough tackling (not accurate tackling, but he goes in hard none the less). If I was to compare him to a player, I would liken him to a more consistent Guti. His skills develop the more he plays and the more responsibility is given to him to create. He does have his problems with consistency, having a rough beginning to this season, but he still shows up for more games then our resident genius Guti.
Two videos of Esteban are below, both showcasing his individual brilliance coupled with his ability to marry that into a team oriented playing style. And of course, you will see why he is called the Pirate!
The required La Fabrica video first of course:
Then a sampling of Granero’s magic in the most recent game he played at the Bernabeu:
Who doesnt love Esteban Granero? This guy is the kind of player I want Real to use game in, game out because he produces consistently and plays with his heart on his sleeve. And he is good. Did I mention that? He was incredible at the Bernabeu the last time he was there, tormenting Marcelo (well….not that hard) and setting up Soldado for a goal. He was also involved in just about everything good attacking wise that Getafe did. The creative fulcrum of the side, he has matured to a level not expected at his age, and I would say he is a like for like substitution for the aging Guti.
He can play on the left or right wing, and this season he has been used primarily on the right. With the addition of Ronaldo to bolster the right wing, it may be tougher for him to get in to the team, and with Kaka most likely to take up the left wing position, it looks even more difficult. Not a like for like with Ronaldo, but he could easily sub in for Kaka and get the play bustling right along, and he has a hell of shot from distance, much like De la Red.
It is still unclear as to whether he will be brought back this summer as there as a bit of a log jam in the midfield. With Kaka, Ronaldo and Robben filling in the wings, and the likes of Van der Vaart, Sneijder and Drenthe all possibilities there too, players will have to be sold before Granero returns. But its looking ever more likely that those three will be departing this summer in favor of Granero being brought in. Like Negredo, Granero does not want to sit the bench for a whole year and will be hesitant to move if he does not see himself playing. But new coach Manuel Pellegrini is a known admirer of Granero, which may make the deal that much easier to complete.
The stories of Roberto Soldado have certainly rang in Granero’s ear as they are both are team mates at Getafe. There is also the precedent of supremely talented Javier Balboa returning to Real to never be used, much like Javi Garcia has had to deal with this year. But with Granero a known Madridista, he may have the temptation to give it a whirl. If not, interest is high in his services, as both Villarreal and Valencia are looking to acquire him in swap deals with Real or separately. His stock will only continue to rise as he is with the Spanish team at the u-21 European Championships in Sweden right now and his playmaking ability could help Spain to another international title.
Although it seems unlikely at this point, but I would love to see Granero back at the Bernabeu for the future. He wont be a starter, much like Negredo, but he will provide excellent cover and I fancy him to keep Kaka out of the team every now and then with his excellent play. Florentino wants the best of the cantera, the best of the foregin players and the best Spanish players in his team. Well kill two birds with one stone and bring back future Spanish international Esteban Granero. It has been unofficially announced that Granero will not be returning to Real this coming year and will be staying with Getafe, although he has been tracked by various other Spanish clubs including Vilarreal. Is there any hope left in seeing Granero in white one day? Let me know your thoughts on Esteban!
