Castilla Update
By: Corey | March 26th, 2009Real Madrid Castilla are back in the playoff picture with an epic 3-2 victory over group leader Leganes. Alberto Bueno scored a brace in the waning minutes of the first half and Castilla held on in the second to move within three points of Leganes and Cartagena at the top of the table. If you dont remember, the way the Segunda B is formatted, the top four teams from all four groups go in to a 16 team playoff system that will eventually move 4 teams up to the Liga Adelante (2nd division). More detail on that here:
The the four group winners will have the opportunity to be promoted directly and be name the overall Segunda División B champion. The four group winners will be drawn into a two-legged series where the two winners will be promoted to the Liga Adelante and enter into the final for the Segunda División B champion. The two losing semifinalists enter the playoff round for the last two promotion spots.
The four group runners-up will be drawn against one of the three fourth-placed teams outside their group while the four third-placed teams are drawn against one another in a two-legged series. The six winners advance with the two losing semifinalists to determine the four teams that will enter the last two-legged series for the last two promotion spots. In all the playoff series, the lower-ranked club plays at home first. Whenever the is a tie in position (e.g. like the group winners in the Semifinal Round and Final or the third-placed teams in the first round), a draw will determine the club to play at home first.
So it is not as easy to figure out as one may think. But if Castilla stays in the top four, they have a chance of getting promoted, and of course if they are 1st or 2nd in the division they get better draws in the knockout playoffs. If they were to finish in first, and then win the two rounds of playoffs between the top four teams they would get promoted automatically. If they were to lose the tie against another #1 team or finish 2nd-4th will go into the playoff system.
Here was the lineup from last night:
FICHA TÉCNICA
Real Madrid Castilla: Adán; Villafañe, Agus, Gary (D. Mateos) Marcos Alonso; Acuña (Palanca), Marcos Tébar, Mosquera, Vázquez; Bueno (Javi H.)
Leganés: Raúl Moreno; Gustavo (Landaburu), Mario, Javi, Bermudez; Valleros, Gastón (Juli), Casquero (Negral), Javi Vicente; Nacho Aznar, Anibal.
And here is what the league table looks like:

As you can see, its very possible that if Real maintains decent form for the remainder of the season they will be in the playoffs, especially since Murcia B cannot get promoted since Murcia’s A team is in the second division, and looks unlikely to make it back to top flight. Castilla can also finish top of the table if they can continue to play well, but will need to be more consistent if they hope to finish as champs of the 2nd group. I wish the lads the best of luck for the rest of the season.

Murcia B can actually get promoted…the A and B teams can be in the same league but not both in the Copa…sorry if I ruined your hopes…

Flippy, I’m almost certain that a B team can not play in the same league as the A team, and B teams aren’t allowed to participate in the Copa Del Rey anyway. They used to be able to ages ago, but that’s changed. So we look good to qualify for the playoffs which is excellent news. Now let’s start using some of these goddamn players.

Sorry Flippy, but your wrong. A and B teams cannot participate in the same league, they changed that rule a long time ago. Also, after Real Madrid played Real Castilla in the Copa they stopped allowing B teams to participate in the Copa del Rey. Sorry if you dont know shit….

What changes could be anticipated if Castilla indeed moves up to la Segunda? Would there be any real focus on trying to stay up by pursuing older players that may not have the upside of younger guys, in order to maybe attract a higher overall grade of young talents a few years down the road? Or would it just be treated as an inevitability that the team would go back down soon enough?
Also, Corey, nota bene for taking screenshots on your Mac: you can just hold the apple key + shift + 4, and the cursor will turn into a crosshair and you can select what part of the screen you want to take a screenshot of, and when you’re done it’ll automatically turn up on your desktop as an image file.

Patrick- I know, I take screen shots all the time for my other blog. I took those quickly and did not crop them with iPhoto because I did not have the time. Thanks though.
As for the Castilla team, I dont see them bringing in any other players unless they are young.

Here’s something that’s been on my mind: I know I shouldn’t give merit to rumors, but with all this talk about Maicon coming to Madrid, I’m wondering, “What about Sergio Ramos?” I know Maicon is considered the best in his position, but I still take Sergio hands down. If any of you watched the Spain v. Turkey match over the weekend, Ramos was easily the Man of the Match, creating the usual havoc on the right flank and getting credited with a lucky assist on the goal. I suppose Ramos could be moved to center back if Maicon came, but I honestly prefer to watch him on the right. If we were to be linked with any full back, it should be a left back, and my choice would be Evra. Thoughts.

//John,
I totally agree with you! Ramos is something to behold when he bombs down the right flank like a B52 bomber!! My thought is that the new president and his sporting crew should bring 3 world class players. A winger – my preferred ones are Ribery or Ronaldo. A world class left back – who that should be I don’t really know. And we need a world class CM – my favorite to take that role is Xabi Alonso who I consider a realistic target. I know he is bask and all that but I have a good feeling about him playing in Madrid next season.. If Perez pulls a rabbit out of his hat and brings Cesc that would make me even more happy but I think that is a more difficult operation.. I can also see the need for a replacement for Cannavaro – who has done plenty for us but I really think it´s time for him and Real Madrid to part from each other.. How much do you think Juventus would be willing to let Chilini go for guys? Would they consider a deal if we gave them Drente and VDV??
Real will most likely offload a bunch of players who at the moment are paid way more than their contribution on the pitch. Im talking about Salgado €5m/y(who by the way is a true warrior and a true madridista), Saviola €5m/y, Dudek €2m/y, Cannavaro €5m/y and Heinze €4m/y.. that’s about €20 m/year, a sum that could pay the wages of Ribery, a left back and X.Alonso.. Basically they need to make room for new stars that can pull own weight in comparison to what they earn. If we offload Guti I wouldn´t go sleepless either cause I think Parejo can do the sub-roll just as good..
BTW, international breaks sucks!!

Sergio ramos is a monster on the right but maicon is just as good if not better at least at bombing down the flank remember that he is the reason daniel alves rarely sees a minute with the brazilian NT
if he does come though I would like us to play him on the left a la philip Lahm , moving ramos to the left is another optionPosted from

Off topic here but I heard that little Zizou AKA Enzo has been so impressive with our U15 that spain is considering selecting him ., france aint gonna let that happen if they have a say in it

E: The choice is Enzo’s, not France or Spain. Enzo has grown up in Turin and Madrid, so I doubt he feels very French. He has been in the Real system for 5 years now, and his life is in Madrid. Some of his friends are getting picked for Spanish youth teams, such as Derik Osede, who is Nigerian in decent but has lived in Madrid his whole life as well. I say let the boy play for Spain at the youth level. If French football has a problem with it, look no further then their own academies for talent.

Granit, I agree with you on everything except the CM, we should only buy 1 if De La Red is ruled out absolutely from playing. I’m sure i speak for most of us when I say I would much rather De La Red in the centre of the field than paying 20 odd million for Alonso.

Remember you guys that Diarra will be back for next season (remember him? the other one) and I´ll be looking forward to seeing how he pairs up with Lass, he would play a more forward role then as he did in Lyon. We definitely need a creative midfield player as there is no organiser and the team are getting results but looking rough in mid field
I agree with other posters Sergio is irreplacable and is a far better right back than CB. Luckily he has a huge buy out clause on his contractPosted from
