Champions League draw: AS Roma v Real Madrid
By: Steve | December 21st, 2007
Hala Madrid! Los Merengues have drawn AS Roma for the first round of the knockout stage of the Champions League. Madrid, by virtue of finishing top of their group, travel to the Eternal City for the first leg in mid-February, and the return leg will be held at the Bernabeu in early March.
Roma sit in second place in the Serie A table, but a distant second to Inter. The giallorossi sport a number of players who could walk into the Madrid side, including bad boy Francesco Totti, young midfielders Daniele de Rossi and Simone Perrotta, and defenders Panucci and Juan. They also have a couple La Liga outcasts in their squad, ex-Barca midfielder Ludovic Giuly and our very own ex-rightback-of-the-future Cicinho. Roma have only lost once in Serie A this season, racking up 7 wins and 5 draws so far, but they also just dropped a 3-1 decision away at Torino in the Coppa Italia, only 3 days after playing the same team in the same city to a draw in a Serie A match.
Our idiot sporting director Mijatovic once again opens his mouth when it should be wired shut. I don’t think it’ll be an easy tie, but if Madrid plays the way they can, I’d aim for an away draw, hopefully with a couple away goals, and then I’d be pretty confident about getting a good result at home.

AS Roma is stronger than Lazio so I think we have to work harder to beat them. They are all in Totti - their Raul.

Also, Mijatovic opened his mouth without much to say, while Antonio Tempestilli had some bile to spill.

HALA MADRID!!! Roma wouldn’t have been my first choice for a draw, but it certainly could’ve been worst (i.e. Arsenal, Liverpool, or ARSENAL!). Madrid make me nervous when it comes to Champions League, being notorious under-achievers, but I have a bit more confidence this season. We’ll see!

Shkambi, thanks for the post, great to see I have som international readers. I favor Real too, Roma’s season has just come unhinged recently, and I dont expect to continue. Roma has a legitmate chance to win the Scudetto, but they would have to concentrate solely on that, so the CL may fall by the way side. I suggest we all read Chris’ page a little more to get a feel for out next opponents.
