Champions League Liveblog: BATE Borisov v Real Madrid
By: Steve | November 25th, 2008Hala Madrid! Hey folks, I almost forgot there was a match today. I have a quick errand to run, and then i’ll be home to write up a liveblog, but I’ll likely be a bit late. Hope y’all can forgive me on that. Tonight’s match will be available on Sky Sporta Xtra via the red button (Screen 3), starting at 19h45 GMT, for those of you in the UK.
Ok, check back here soon!
UPDATE: Hey y’all, mucho apologies from yours truly. That quick errand I mentioned? Dragged on for 2 hours and i missed the entire match. Really sorry, but I caught the highlights and it’s good to see we won. I’m counting on you to comment on how we played! What did you think? A win is a win? Or did we look as bad as the score indicates?

Raul scores! great play by Drenthe on the left wing.

So it stays 1:0 to madrid. I must say our defence looks better but we really are missing a real striker. Saviola for me was rubbish once again. At least we qualify for the next stage.

Yeah I think we all must look at the positives out of this game considering how things have shaped up the past month. Two wins in a row is a start, now we have to keep that momentum going and translate it into some more good results.

it looks like ramos + pepe in the middle = clean sheets
hope schuster keeps it that wayPosted from

@Andres: Yeah, but barely. There were some pretty shaky moments, as usual. I don’t know about you guys, but for most of the second half I was in a state close to cardiac arrest.
Positives: 1.We’re through. But barring a win against Zenit, and Juve losing to Bate, we’ll be 2nd in the group (and hence up against a tougher opponent in the first round of knock-outs).
2. Drenthe, Drenthe, Drenthe. How much is riding on this kid’s shoulders right now? It seemed that almost every time we attacked, the ball was eventually put at his feet. And he did pretty good with it to, making some quality chances and setting up the goal. Still needs to develop his finishing, though. There were a list of times that he tried to crack the ball when a quick pass would have been the better choice.
3. I’m still in love with the Guti, Gago, Sneijder midfield, though when Bate got physical, we got brutalized. It was really clear in the second half.
Oh well, we’re starting to get back on our legs. Hala Madrid!

Agreed james there were some shaky moments but I personally prefer ramos in the middle now , he seems to be doing a way better job there than at the right back position these days
Also agree about drenthe his only problem is the fact that he doesn’t know when to get rid of the ball but with time he’ll develop that part of his game hopefully
And I don’t mind facing tough opponents in the KO stage because schuster’s madrid lways do better against great teams than lesser ones

ramos+pepe is our best defense this year but torres at right back means that we play completely down the left or through the centre. that is extremely lopsided. so if we can get a good right winger and a good lb (chema anton , mayb) that would be good.
heinze was against his usual piece of shit self. this is getting increasingly worrisome. if they continue like this i am getting mi panuelo out.
