Champions League Liveblog: Juventus v Real Madrid
By: Steve | October 21st, 2008Hala Madrid! SOSOSOSO sorry… forgot there was a match tonight and i’m over at a buddy’s place for dinner, and i’m rudely extracting myself to liveblog the rest of this match. Boo on me.
5min (updated): GOAL!!! Del Piero strikes a great ball from 25 yards out to Casillas’ left, leaving the Spanish keeper flat-footed. Who was marking him? I have no idea. Juventus 1-0 Real Madrid.
18min (updated): Ugh, what kind of defending is this from Real? Del Piero is on the edge of the box with the ball and no one is trying to tackle him.
19min (updated): Great interception by Sneijder right in front of Nedved.
19min (updated): The boo birds are out for Cannavaro’s blood… hahaha.
20min (updated): Ooh, nice turn and shoot from vdV, but it’s straight at the keeper.
28min: Good cross in from Juve’s right flank, but it’s cleared by Pepe.
29min: Great interception by Pepe on a squaring pass again from the right.
32min: Oh! Poor first touch from Sergio Ramos, on Sneijder’s cross from the right… Ramos is up there for a free kick near the far corner, and hasn’t completely retreated when the Dutchman launches the ball into the box… Ramos is onside, and if he could’ve chested it down, it would’ve surely been a goal…
34min: Real are again attacking at a jogging pace, allowing Juve to bring back defenders and chase the ball.
35min: Ouch… dunno what happened, but Marchisio is adding one more to Juve’s long injury list…
37min: Yeah, he’s being carted off… Salihamidzic on in his place.
39min: Gago looks like he’s man-marking Del Piero, chasing him wide out onto the wing…
41min: Real seem to be looking for that one incisive pass from the outside, without the creative genius of Guti to rely on… they pass around the edges of the attacking half, and then either boot the pass away or the forwards are offside. Unimpressed.
43min: Ugh, Madrid storm forward with 5 guys, but without any width at all, so there’s nowhere to pass to in order to relieve the defensive pressure.
45min: The match is really choppy… not much flow.
45+1min: Ugh, poor pass by Higuain deep in the Juve corner gets intercepted and allows The Old Lady to break out.
HALFTIME: Well, i missed the first 20 minutes of the match, but if the second half of that first period was any indication, Real have played some seriously lacklustre football.
HALFTIME: I don’t know what the problem is… This is a weakened Juve side, with barely half their regular starters, and we can’t muster a half-decent attack.
46min: No changes after halftime.
47min: Robben’s warming up…
48min: GOAL!!! Amauri rises up over Heinze to nod the ball off the Argentine’s foot and into the goal, no chance for Casillas on the deflection. Pepe gave Nedved loads of room to make the cross after the Czech international intercepted a lazy pass near the box. Juventus 2-0 Real Madrid.
53min: Ugh, van der Vaart wastes some decent play with a booming shot way over the goal, after some patient play by Real that finally works.
54min: Schuster makes his move early, after witnessing a lack of intent in his side… it’s Robben on for Higuain.
55min: OH! Sneijder attracts 3 defenders just inside the box, and he curls a wicked ball for vdV, but number 23 heads it wide.
57min: OH! Sneijder again plays the provider, this time on a free kick that somehow only grazes someone’s head and misses 3 other Real attackers… a glorious opportunity.
59min: Big shot by Sneijder is stopped by the keeper, but pushed away to safety.
60min: Oh! Ruud’s turn-and-shoot is deflected and takes the power out of the kick which is easily caught.
61min: OH!!! Sneijder blasts away from 28-30 yards but it glances off the right post… SO CLOSE!
62min: Real are attacking with much more intent now, passing better, keeping possession in the Juventus half… Juve’s defenders are sitting back really deep.
65min: Brutal free kick given on Chiellini, who barely touched Pepe… but Sneijder’s free kick is palmed away by Manninger.
66min: GOAL!!! VAN THE MAN!!! Ruud scores a great header off Heinze’s nice cross from the left. He was totally unmarked… unbelievable. Why can’t we keep doing this? Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid.
67min: OH! The Juve cross from the right is just a bit high for Amauri who somehow slipped right in between Pepe and Ramos.
68min: Ugh, what is this shitty defending? Real have too many guys in the middle and they get in each other’s way when trying to clear the danger area… brutal giveaway to Nedved, who’s then fouled by Sneijder.
69min: Del Piero’s free kick goes under the wall but it skids into Casillas’ hands.
70min: Ooh, Ruud gets open for a header but he tries to put it back for vdV and it’s intercepted.
70min: Robben is just on fire right now… he’s definitely changed the dynamic of this match.
71min: Great interception by Pepe, stepping in front of Amauri to steal Nedved’s pass.
73min: Ugh, brutal cross from Heinze… Ruud makes something out of it, but his headed pass is miscontrolled by vdV and they lose it.
75min: Real are attacking up the left through Heinze and Robben, and it seems strange but it’s working, since Juve are defending with 9 men behind the ball and don’t pose much of a threat now going forward…
76min: Drenthe on for van der Vaart. More pace on the flanks now, looks like Schuster is going for it.
78min: Iaquinta on for Amauri.
80min: It’s like night and day for Real. The first half was barely watchable, now they’re controlling the play, dictating the pace, not making idiot mistakes…
81min: Oh… nice play by Robben, dribbling up the right, but his squaring pass is intercepted in the box…
82min: Eh, i spoke too soon… Iaquinta does a good job, holding up the ball while the rest of the Juve attack (all 4 of them) come up to support…
84min: What was that?!?! Ruud doesn’t get the call on the kick inside the area, but Pepe gets nicked for a foul on Iaquinta? Brutal call…
85min: Robben is staying on the right flank, with Drenthe on the left, but Robben is getting predictable… gets the ball out wide, cuts in on his left foot, then looks for Ruud in the box… he’s done that 3 straight times.
87min: Ugh… good chance for Real… Sneijder takes a free kick a long way out, but it’s deflected twice on the way out…
89min: Argh, brutal cross by Drenthe… he really does need to work on his touch. He can run and dribble with the best of them, but actually using that left foot… meh.
90+1min: 3 minutes of extra time.
90+1min: Ugh, another ugly touch by Heinze, almost gives it away to Sissoko.
90+2min: Ooh, free kick won by Sneijder, though it was lucky… he almost ran into Drenthe.
90+2min: Two attempts from long range… the free kick hits the wall which may or may not have encroached, and then Robben’s attempt on the rebound is off target.
90+3min: Ooh, the ref psyched out the crowd with a long whistle, but it’s not over yet…
90+3min: Oh man, Juve’s defending that back line like crazy… it’s like 8 guys in the line!
90+4min: and now it’s over…
POSTGAME: Well, you knew Juve were going to hold the fort down after going up 2 goals, so Real did pretty good making it as close as it was.
POSTGAME: Real just didn’t bring their ‘A’ game early enough. That first half was just brutal.
POSTGAME: Schuster did well to introduce Robben early in the second half, which paid off immediately. Real’s attack was so much more coherent and consistent after his introduction.
POSTGAME: Which begs the question, why wasn’t he on the pitch from the start? What did Schuster think he was doing with a midfield that was so narrow? Heck, Ruud was out on the left flank more than a few times in the first half.
POSTGAME: Real really do need to invest in a proper right winger if they really want to attack properly. The instincts of most of the Real midfield lead them into the centre where they clog each other up and provide teams an easy way to defend them.
POSTGAME: I’m sure Corey will do a proper review of the match, so i won’t write one up here… besides, my laptop battery is almost dead.
POSTGAME: Thanks for tuning in, and apologies again on the tardiness! Hala Madrid!

ahh!! who else wants to go into a room with lots of breakable things in it carrying a big sledgehammer. nd i am gonna put labels on d things i am gonna smash. heinze , pepe , bernadine , d broadcast company(show two matches manu vs celtic nd arsenal vs fener on two channels nd den telecasts d same fucking matches again). even san iker didn’t do well. i mean , i no its unreasonable but we expect him to pull off these saves.but this season he hasn’t done it so far. too many instances in which he has been left stranded. i won’t dream of pointing a finger at him but after last season nd d euros i would have expected far better frm him. nd wat exactly was schuster’s logic in playing d fine china midfield of gago , wesley nd vdv ??? i no hindsight is always 20/20 but even us fans knew that de la red had to play. he has been our best damn player in d past few matches.nd even if he didn’t start ,y wasn’t he brought on ltr ??? y bring on drenthe??? a player who is really severely lacking in passing ability nd final ball.dese guys just ruined my whole day.we lost to a team that had about as much creativity as d tinkerman has trophies nd calderon has brains i.e. zilch. if d idiots on top have ne fucking grey cells between dem , we would go all out for a right winger , striker nd left back in d tranfer window. after heinze’s displays i believe we really need 1 direly. nd someone give ramos a big solid kick up his ass. hell i believe some1 should write an article listing in detail all d damn faults with our team.just give us(me atleast) poor sufferers a place to vent coz its rather hard to find dat room to go in with a sledgehammer. if u do dat bestever piece , corey , do me a favor nd do dis 1 too.

The most comments we have ever had on a match day, pretty impressive guys, thanks to everyone. I will have a review up tomorrow.

Two thoughts-
#1- Why was there a little Spanish flag on the jerseys? Just for CL? In Italy, having a little Italian flag means something totally different…
#2- Having thought about it, it was bizzarro world there. From watching the match and how it was played, you’d have thought we were in the Bernabeu.Posted from

We need to buy a new winger. After Robben in we played so much better, juve had to defend on the wide so we had more space. but we all know that Robben can’t play 3-4 matches in a row, he get injured easily. beside i think our player is too small and we also lack of pace and strength.

So Heinze messes up again. We really need a new leftback. Also i was really shocked Ruben never played. Schuster got his tactics wrong this time. Well done to Juventus though.

I think Schuster wanted to give De la Red a break, he’s been playing a lot lately…
The clogging in midfield was unbearable to watch, the lack of width really hurt us, thank god for robben, the problem’s he’s too fragile, so Schuster has to take care of him
We have the same problem with Juve, that Patetico has with us, and it was evident in the opening goal, and the way our boys played in the first half, with lack of focus, hurried passes, long balls, etc.
In the end, it was a good result against a terrible Juve side, we’ll get back at them in the Bernabeu
Take care everybody, HALA MADRID

For me the weak players were Gago, Ramos and Pepe. Gago looked neverous and from the start got nutmegged and never seemed to recover. Shame no Diara.
I think Ramos is awesome, but he’s been awful at defending so far this season – every team knows how to exploit our weak side now and everything comes down his side. We need a right sideedd winger to give us the width that Ramos is trying to provide – it’s so obvious. Anybody know of any good wingers who play on the right?
Pepe tried to play the ball as his feet and be clever far too much when he should just put his foot through it (good headers away from the area though).
I agree that Henize is horrible going forward – can’t cross the bloody thing, but defensively he was alright despite the 2nd goal.Sissoko was awesome and also Nedved was clever (althought he was given the space to play)
I’m left wondering if Sniejder and VDV can actually play together the way they did. In the euros they seems to pull if off without looking like the midfield was clogged up – they both played very wide (Sn on the left, VDV on the right) and it worked. Don’t understand why they can’t do the same for RM.
funny how we seem to look so shaky and nervous in the champions league (comparesd to league games) – you’d have thought with experienced players like VN, Raul and Cana, they would be able to pass confidence on.

Wow. I thought Gago was bang on all night. From my point of view, shakey start aside, he was doing a great job defending, was instrumental in keeping possesion (70%! I repeat, 70%! and that was almost all Gago’s handywork) and his workrate put the rest of the team to shame. If it weren’t for the fact that Sneijder and VdV were forming a blackhole of creativity, and were leaving Gago out to dry in the back, we would have been cheering victory with Gago as our savior.
Scary how much difference Robben made. Wish we weren’t so dependant on his role.

Pepe and Gago weak?! Pepe performed his best match since he signed for Real, he absolutely great, on offense and defense, if he keeps it up and real earn a couple championships, do expect him to be in the ballon d’ or nominees! Gago had a good match as well, not at the same level but he was positioned well and paired up in defense where he was required. The main issue at stake-and i see many agree on it-is that schuster is choking the box with one striker and two fowards. Higuain is lethal in one position: second striker, now everytime he finds himself moving towards the wing…he¡s worthless, since he’s not a crosser or dribbler. Im not even placing Raul in the picture, its up to Schuster to place Raul and RVN or with higuain but three is too much of a crowd. Once robben came into play and Higuain left, Real regained a whole new approach. I prefer Higuain nowadays but its only when i question Raul, when he comes out with a couple goals, important to not he is among the top scorers at the moment, he does more than meets the eye.
What can i say….70% possession and 18 shots as opposed to 10…i don’t reckon Real will have this share of bad luck at the Bernabeu, and history shows Real having a good record at home just like la juve at delle allpi. Despite the loss, i enjoy watching this new and improved team play.

Well let’s look at the goals with some objectivity.
On the first goal – Pepe should be marking del piero when Cana screws up and lets the ball thorough, but he’s several paces behind because he’s gone forward too far. So to me the 2 centre backs aren’t doing thier job.
Now the 2nd goal.
Who was dribbling the ball and did a dodgy back pass to let nedved cross the ball for the second goal? Pepe. Where the hell was Ramos to provide the defensive cover on his side? Henize flaps at the ball on the other side and it goes in.I Pepe shows potential, he’s tall, strong and agile. But he wants to play the ball too much in my opinion. I have seen Pepe play much better the league.
I also like Gago and think he shows potential going forward and at light defense cover, but as a defensive midfielder he got the crap kicked out of him by Sisoko – who was the beast of the midfield all through the first half. Clearly he needed help out there, he was out of his depth – doesn’t matter how many nice passes you saw him make in the second half.I think you guys are ignoring the first half which where all the damage was done. Didn’t we just concede 2 stupid goals because of mistakes made by the back four and the inability of the defensive midfielder to boss the midfield?
You can’t blame shuster for crowding the box, but the fact is Juve are defensive masters – they were crowding the box with 10 men as soon as we got the ball. Sure we made it easy for them to defend without any wide players, but RM do not concern me going forward.
You can’t win the Champions League without a solid defense – first half – I saw the keystone cops in defense and a boy trying last ditch attempts to take the ball off attacking players.
Second half they played great becsaue they didn’t have to do anything – and that was Juves fault, they sat back.Posted from

There is a lot of common sense in your claims Evo, but when an offensive team plays a typical italian 10 men in the box, you have no other option than to move the defensive line many feet up. Ramos is playing very offensively, he was more spontaneous with Capello since he would attack only in fastbreaks, not static offense. Del Piero’s goal was far away and marvelous, we have to applaud his shot rather than point out a defensive mistake cause not many pocket that kind of shots and secondly, you can expect to close down all the lines, a team will always have a few occasions and we had infinitely more than la juve. They were more effective and lucky, what can i say, shit happens but nevertheless i saw a Real Madrid far more prepared for the task compared to previous seasons.
I do stand by Schuster going the wrong way by playing raul, higuain and rvn together, only robben’s presence in the second half will become a gamebreaker but, on the contrary, Real’s offense becomes to centrally linear. Having so many opponents stranded together, it makes sense to play a wide winger only to open up space. Real’s goal came after Robben was followed by three defenders and the box was cleared out for RVN to do his job.
Sissoko did beat up gago, but im speaking in tactical terms, its also up to the ref to stop that kind of play and diarra is not fit to play, but wouldn’t you agree gago has shown considerable improvement this season?

“you can expect to close down all the lines,”-what i meant is you can’t close down all the lines

likewise there are elements of what you say that I agree with.
Specifically:
1)Higuain, Raul, VN together hasn’t shown to be a good combination so far – so it’s a questionable decision – I agree. Shuster probably should have responded sooner when it wasnt working. Although Raul and VN are no brainers for the champions league and Higuain is in great form – so the decision was probably made with some reasoning.
2) Robben coming on made all the difference up front.
3) I am normally here on this blog singing Gagos praises. But with injuries aside Gago hasn’t really had a chance to show us what he’s like this season – whereas Diarra has been great so far. Of course if Diaraa had been fit I think he would have had the call. You’re right that perhaps I’m being a little unfair on Gago because he was just out of his depth – a boy sent to do a man’s job so to speak.
Frankly RM’s defense is not up to the job at Champions league level the way they are playing now – in the first half they struggled against a bunch of desperate old men the other night. What do you think the likes of Manu, Chelsea,
Juve are idiots for sitting back in the secon half the way they did, and it ccould have easily backfired (i thought it would when i was watching) – but I also admire the way they were able to fend off that kind of onslaught – so disciplined.
Now I would hate RM to be like that, it sucks for entertainment in my opinion. But even Spain’s winning european team are essentially an attcking mentality side, but they have disciplined hardworkers at the back (who have conceded no goals recently). Those are the qualities we should be looking for – for gods sake 2 of the players are the same ones!Posted from

Incomplete sentence, I meant to say “What do you think the likes of Manu, Chelsea, will do to us? “

we do have quality at the back. but sometimes dey play like sunday league amateurs rather than real madrid players.i think we need three players at the back next year.two CBs(1 really , garay is already coming) and 1 LB. lahm nd agger would b gud i think.
and since ramos seems to be making so many mistakes at the back because of his attacking tendencies nd otherwise , i have an idea. y not play torres as RB nd ramos as a winger further up the field ??? let him do wat he likes to do so much.attack.
as for gago i don’t expect him to ever be able to do a diarra like job for us. he is a good dmf nd is improving fast(in his 3 appearances this year he has been super) but is just a bit lacking in physical strength.thats y for him to truly flourish he has to be partnered with a strong box2box midfielder like de la red. i think of him as a deep-lying playmaker/dmf. he does have good passing skills nd range. check his pass for raul’s disallowed(stupid idiot of a ref) goal against patetico.
as for the forward line we play best when glassboy is playing.nd d best forward combo is rvn, robben nd higuain.because although ruud is scoring goals for the most part he disappears frm games most of the time.so higuain would b better dan raul there.Posted from

I totally agree with realrock, especially in his statement about Gago, “I don’t expect him to ever be able to do a Dearra like job for us.”
They are two different players, who excell when being paired up together. Diarra wasn’t available, so Gago had to play it alone. End of story. Except that, once again: 70% possesion! And did you see anyone forward of Gago retaining the ball? He won back ball after ball in the midfield.
Yes there were moments when Sissoku over powered him, but for every 1 moment like that, there were six where he passed/one-touched the ball away before Sissoku could get to him. I really think that Gago was not just adequate, but excellent. He had virtually no help in marshaling the midfield, and yet kept the ball on Juve’s side of the pitch.
You could critique him for not creating more offensive oppertunities, but A. Diarra wouldn’t have either, and B. How could Gago focus on offense with how much was expected of him defensively? Even if De la Red was paired up with him (as realrock pointed out) we would have seen a different game.
Lesson: Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Gago are not a good combo. At least not yet.
And just because it hasn’t been pointed out in a while: Boy, do I miss Balboa.

I have already conceded that maybe I was being a little harsh on Gago, but my point wasn’t about Gago.
I think the facts speak for themselves. The point is that our defensive performances are lacking (despite the talent we have) – especially in europe.
In my opinion it is not enough to be able to win the Champions League.
If we win it I’ll happily come back on this blog and tell you all I was wrong

Well, i agree with most sentiments here.
I think Ramos has been a bit off-form, but still represents our best form of attack on the right wing, which says a lot.
I think Pepe blows hot and cold. He can look spectacular like when he chases down an attacker and nicks the ball away, but then he can look terrible, like that giveaway to Nedved that led to Juve’s second goal. he’s like the defensive version of Guti.
We need help at leftback. Neither Heinze nor Marcelo are the right choice. I’d stick with Heinze just for defensive purposes, because as terrible as he is, he makes less mistakes than Marcelo.
Diarra does an awesome job at protecting the back four. It is his job, and his job alone. No one else is capable of doing what he does, which is basically the Makelele role.
Gago is also pretty good at what he does. He’s not so much a defensive midfielder in the mold of Makelele or Diarra or Gattuso, but rather a distributor from the back like Xabi Alonso. Against an uber-defensive team like Juve, Schuster gambled with having only Gago back there (well, Diarra was out, i know) and lost.
We need help at right wing. This is where Calderon’s botched pursuit of CRonaldo and subsequent loss of Robinho really f***ed us up. Imagine CRon and Robben switching up wings like it’s nobody’s business? Juve would’ve been shredded.
We need to clarify central midfield. We have vdV, Sneijder, de la Red and Guti. All play the same central attacking midfielder, though Guti and de la Red probably can play a bit deeper than the other two. Guti’s vision and creativity are sorely missed, whilst Sneijder and vdV seem to duplicate each other. I suppose it’s good to have multiple assets, but for the love of God, you can’t start both of them!
Robben is a beast. A glass beast, but a beast nonetheless. I love that guy.
We need another striker. Higuain is like a younger version of Ruud – good in the box, useless outside of it. He doesn’t have Ruud’s lethal finish yet though, but hopefully he’ll get it soon. He’s totally misused by Schuster on the right of an attacking trident.
That is all.

Sorry if I piled it on a bit thick, evo. I was just really impressed by Gago’s contribution.
Steve: In my opinion it was Guti that we truly and sorely missed against Juve, maybe (MAYBE) even more so than Diarra. In games like that, his talent to thread a ball into a packed box is priceless. He can be a ghost for an entire game, but will consistantly put two or three balls right where they need to be. After that it’s just a matter of finishing.
So I think Guti should be a fixture in the CL. In fact, I’ll even go as far as to propose my (conditional) CL formation:
Casillas; Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro, Heinze; Guti, Gago, Diarra, Robben; Raul, Ruud.
First choice subs: Higuain in for Raul, Sneijder/VdV in for Guti.

i think we missed de la red the most.gago maybe called the next redondo but i feel its de la red who is the closest in style to el principe.great passing skills, gud defense ability nd box to box movement.
gago as steve said is more like xabi alonso.but alonso is paired in a double pivot with mascherano for the scousers and that has helped his game immensely.that is why i am big advocate of a gago/de la red double pivot.i think thats our best bet for the kind of football expected of real madrid without being caught out defensively.the third player needed would be a cm who is also very mobile.i would say sneijder.against teams with two DMFs in d middle , take gago out nd put diarra in.to compensate for lost creativity guti also plays.
i don’t think guti would have been suitable against juve.he would have been barged aside by sissoko and spent his time sulking.ofcourse he is capable of producing that one wonderpass out of nowhere but still i don’t think he is a good bet aginst heavily physical sides.Posted from

to anyone doubting that a double pivot can lead to beautiful football , i would say , go nd check the videos of the 2002-03 CL quarters against manu.the whole match.not just d goals.two of the best matches i have ever seen.

realrock, the problem with what you are suggesting is that neither Gago nor de la Red are anything like Mascherano, who is a defensive hound par excellence. Hell, no one on the Madrid squad really compares.
If we’re sticking to EPL comparisons and Gago is like Xabi Alonso, then I would equate de la Red to Fabregas, especially the one who had to step in when Vieira and Gilberto Silva were injured in 2004-5. de la Red is essentially a central midfielder, influencing the game box-to-box. He is not, and will never be confused with, Mascherano.

i wasn’t comparing gago to alonso , steve. i was saying that pairing gago with de la red would take some defensive responsibility off his shoulders and help his game. i drew the analogy to give an example of how alonso’s game has been helped by mascherano coming in there. de la red would ofcourse never play like mascherano. but he still has gud defensive ability. he was billed as a dmf when he first came into the team. a sneijder-gago-de la red midfield is better than sneijder-guti-gago of last year’s.
i have been a big fan of the double pivot with a tackler who can pass nd a pass-er who can tackle ever since the 2002-03 quarters against manu when makelele nd conceicao were in the middle. ofcourse that team was on a different level altogether until they bought beckham nd sold makelele.nowadays we are winning but the style is just not in conjunction with the footballing philosophy at the bernabeu and that leaves me with a slightly disappointed feeling. doesn’t help either when my family(catalans nd barca fans) rub it in.Posted from
