Congratulations to Barcelona (And Good Football)
By: Corey | May 28th, 2009Of course it would be remise to not congratulate Barcelona for winning the Champions League yesterday. I watched the game and although I knew what Barcelona would play like from all the La Liga I watch, I still enjoyed what I saw. It reminded me of the Euro Cup final against Germany, where Spain passed the ball around the ankles of the Germans for 90 minutes. It was really something to behold, and all credit is due to the squad and the manager for executing such beautiful football with a winning formula. A formula that has its heart in the club, where its preached from the u-9 squad all the way to the top. Something Real does…well they start at u-9 and somewhere around the Castilla team it gets a little confusing as to what the motto and playing style is.
I wrestled with my conscience over whether to congratulate Barcelona, they being the eternal rival. I dislike Barcelona obviously given my Real Madrid ways, but an article by Eduardo Alvarez made me think a little harder about the situation. Check out the article so you know where I am coming from with this and don’t think I suddenly switched allegiance, as that is not the case.
I love watching the Furia Roja play, and I was super excited when they won the Euro Cup this summer. It was a pleasure to watch all of their games, and they won something finally! Im still happy about it, and Im not even Spanish. But when you think about it from my standpoint, Im rooting for Spanish players that I have come accustomed to watching every weekend either in La Liga or other European leagues. And since Real Madrid supplies exactly 2 Spanish National Team players, I find myself tracking the progress of players on a lot of other teams whose name may start with a Real, but never ends in Madrid.
So while watching Barcelona play, and having it remind me of Spain vs. Germany, I realized that rooting for Barcelona because they were Spanish was more then acceptable. It was no different then an American rooting for the entire Spanish NT. I cheer the team on because they are Spanish, and I love Spanish football. Of course Barcelona is Catalan sure, but they play in La Liga, and any good exposure my favorite league gets is okay by me. Inter league rivalry aside, I prefer a La Liga team to win the cup then an EPL team, and if they do it with some style and class that gets the other neutral fans paying attention, awesome. Plus, it was a chance to see Whiskey Nose beaten despite the considerable press bias towards an MU win because Barcelona “were not physical enough to keep up with the Manchester United players”. What a load of crap.
So in the end, congratulations again to Barcelona and shame on you Real Madrid. I want to see something like that week in week out and in major finals. Hell, I would expect the football to be better then Barcelona, but lets stay realistic. But dont get to comfy Barca, Real and the rest of Europe will be gunning for you next season. I can guarantee that.

SO! I had a great weekend, thanks for asking. Good weather and Neighborhood festivals in Chicago meant good bands, awesome street food, happy people and drinking in public. Biked a total of 29+ miles, and not for the sake of exercise: it was because there were 29+ miles worth of things worth biking to. Meanwhile, Chicago Paulie Boy stayed in doors and posted 29 comments, in a room, all by himself. What a life.

real madrid won so many games because spanish teams fear madrid.
they score against madrid and then go back to defending…madrid grows and scores in the last minute.
masdrid was a big team once and small teams irrationally fear them. Madrid will always thank Franco for that

When you have 4 teams consistently qualifying for the UCL … it gives those 4 teams a bundle load of finance and expierence in the competition. Practice makes perfect…
My point is…if you replace Liverpool and Arsenal with Everton and Aston Villa…i will guarantee you that the EPL will NOT have 3 quarter finalist from EPL ..much less 3 semi finalist in the UCL…
However…. if you switch out VillaReal and Valencia..with Sevilla and Athletico Madrid … all of these teams have the ability to advance in the UCL…
So the 16 s-h-i-t EPL teams … by their failure to challenge and oppose the top 4… has skewed the balance of power…and has made the EPL very top heavy…. and IMO … a top heavy league cannot be ‘THE BEST’. Even so… Barca has proven…with all the top heaviness of the EPL…in their financial strength and consistency…. La Liga still possesses the best clubs in Europe.

Isaiah: “And [Higuain] has to play next to Raul, who I consider one of the most overrated players in history, especially now that he is well past his prime and should have been sent off to the likes of Alicante (no offense to them, but Segunda B awaits, is all) at some point to live out his remaining days in a more suitable environment.”
Which Segunda striker could score 18 goals in the Primera with a team that “was barely functioning as a unit for most of the season”? Seriously, because I’d like to sign that guy up.
I actually agree that Raul is past his prime, and that it is officially time for him to make way for the new, but when it comes to being overrated, when you look at his statistics, his career, and the things he’s done for this club, it’s actually kind of hard to overrate him. Because even at his old, slow, slightly pudgy worse, he still scores more Primera goals than Kun Aguero.
And where did Gijon finish the season? That’s right, you owe me a beer.

Less pointless arguing, more discussion on Real’s new coach, Pellegrini!
I’d love to hear your reactions to it. I know so little about the man…

It´s ironic that under the diplomatic and sportsmanlike heading congratulating Barça, I´ve read the most depressing and narrow minded comments from I guess Barça fans.
I joined the blog as I liked reading and sharing people´s take on current RM affairs, if I want to read this type of comment I could bore myself silly on the Marca pages, although enlightenly the write whole lines of je je je je je! instead of lol! Fab
Corey, I look forward to your take on the new manager, and the next article on the players who should stay/go. Will Kaka follow Ancelotti to Chelsea, I wonderPosted from

Ish, Ramzi, Jason, Eklayva, Tutomate et al Barca commentors: Thank you for your kind words, and your attempts to keep the fire storm to a minimum. Congratulations again, and you along with any other non-Real fan is always welcome to comment here, I have an open door policy of course.
Andres, James, Cesar, Madridista Mac, labomba, john et al Madrid commentors: I thank you for sticking up for your team, and you all raised great points that were met with spite and twisted logic. I thank you for your continued contribution to the page as always, and I apologize that I was away when this argument broke out and was not able to intervene.
To the others, especially mku and ChicagoBoyPaulie:
I am very perturbed that a post congratulating a rival on a great achievement, the treble, would be misconstrued and twisted into some cop out on my part as a Madrid fan. I also find it distasteful and ignorant that your bickering and proclamations against Real Madrid were posted so many times on a REAL MADRID Fansite!
If you hate Real Madrid, fine, it is not my job to change that attitude. But it is also not my job to have to read up to 40 posts each about how terrible my favorite team is on my own site. Comments are now turned off. Unless you can be constructive in your commenting, please do not comment here anymore. I will delete inappropriate posts from here on out, I am tired of your disruptions and so are my readers.
