Cristiano Ronaldo

By: Corey | July 14th, 2008

This is a post for me to address a few things I have seen recently. There has been questions raised about my commitment to the blog as well as my non-coverage the the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga and Euro 08. This commentor, who’s name doesnt need to be revealed, comments can be found here http://real.theoffside.com/team-news/blatter-is-an-idiot.html#comments . I feel its my duty to address these comments rather then ignore them, so that my 5 readers out there can understand my stance on a few things. So lets begin with my lack of commitment.

I hardly understand that. I have a full time job, a summer class, and a social life, yet I still do 2-3 posts a week. I took some time off when the season was over with and during Euro 08 to recharge my batteries, because blogging gets tedious after awhile, but we will be celebrating my 1 year anniversary here at the Offside next month in style. So you can question my commitment all you want, but I wouldnt judge the quality of my writing based off what I have during the summer, or the fact that I dont edit anything because this is a football blog! Not my thesis paper, or the management and organizational process studies I have done.

Euro 08

The few posts I have done this summer have been, lets say, lacking in substance. We had the European Championships, which were exciting, but were not my domain of coverage. I had intended to help out Ryan and Cesar on the World Cup blog covering Spain, but I found my schedule far to hectic at the time, starting a new job and moving into a new house. Its bad enough that I only saw maybe 6 Euro games. But I do not understand why the Real Madrid blog should have to cover Euro 2008? We at the Offside had a whole other website set up to cover that, and if you did not know that then I am sorry, but the main page is directly linked to the WC blog.

As a club blog, its hardly my duty to cover international games, even if Real Madrid players are in the games. I gave a review of each Real players performance in the European Championships, so I guess my question is what more do you want? Again, as I saw about 6 games, it wouldnt be prudent to do recaps of all games that Real players were involved in as I did not see them. Somehow the lack of coverage on Euro 2008 was miscontrued as lack of commitment to the Real Madrid blog. Again, Ryan and Cesar did a fantastic job covering Spains triumph, as I knew they would.

Creating Controversy For Real Madrid Bloggers Too

Second, there has been angry shouts about me not covering every nitty gritty detail about Cristiano Ronaldo. I have two ways to look at that, one I am not particularly proud of. The first is, why should I cover something that is all over every football website and newspaper almost every day. The over kill of interest in this prolonged transfer is almost nausiating to me. Now while I will not underscore that I think he is a very good player (I still have some doubts but thats normal) or that the transfer would be a huge coup for Real and probably do us a world of good from a business stand point. But is he worth the price, the aggony of dealing with Manchester United, or the possible disrupting the balance we have in our current squad?

Those are all questions without answers. And as of right now, his transfer is no where near close, so I treat as if it were gossip. Would you really want to see Cristiano Ronaldo stories everyday on this page? I guess I could, but it would have to include a picture of his girlfriend to make it even remotely interesting. Real fans may be excited about his possible transfer and thats great, but its just that, a possible transfer, and I will say that it looks increasingly unlikely as third parties continue to get involved. Sometimes less is more on these matters.

The second problem with the Ronaldo saga is that I am actually a bit ashamed of how Real has handled themselves. Manchester United are no saints, but Real goes about their business in a very brash and arrogant manner sometimes, which is the way of the super clubs of Europe. But when its between two super clubs, theres problems. And the last thing Real needs is another summer of negative, slanted press from the English football media. Recently Ramo Calderon has retracted much of what he has previously said with peace making comments like “We wont do anything unless Manchester wants to sell.” And thats how it should be. I agknowledge that much of the outside pressures Real has supposively been exerting on MU through the media is far fetched, as while papers like Marca are heavily pro-Real, you cant say that means the club is itself involved.

But if they were, I would be embaressed. Because we should be acting in such a manner, and I am not saying this because we are the best club in the world and thus are better then everyone else. I say this without a lick of arrogance, its not the proper way to do business. So until the whole situation gets cleared up and Manchester United swims in a pool of euro’s or Manchester gets treated to another year of man purses, I will keep my distance except for the important stuff.

Now Real’s preseason has begun, with the first team flying down to the Algarve with their families in toe today. They will then fly out to Irding after a 2 day lay over in Madrid to start the real physical work. So the preseason has begun and I will have some good stuff to write about now, and show I am ‘committed’.

If anyone wants to complain about how you want to do things, then tell them to write a freaking blog. I bet you after a month they will be like 95% of blogs in the blogosphere, they go away.

If anyone wants to disprove me, go ahead.

Since I get lambasted for this too, I’m going to get on my soapbox here. If you disagree with what a blogger says, that’s one thing. But if you are going to question his lack of commitment, screw you. This isn’t ESPN. In case you were wondering, WE DON’T GET PAID!!!

Unlike what you may think, blogging is hard work. Yes, actually when I write a story (and I know Corey does too) we have to look up information we don’t know, scouring sources for dates, places, and correct info so we aren’t spouting off useless information that is incorrect.

Just sit down, write out a post that contains about 600 words, but write it about nothing. Now take that post, and multiply it by 2 or 3 and that is how long the average blog post takes.

If you don’t like Corey’s coverage, go to AS.com or Marca.com. Half the time, we have to find it somewhere in Spanish (or also in Catalan for me) translate it, and then explain it for everyone that cannot speak Spanish since the hotlink is to a Spanish language site. That can get a bit overwheming at times.

Also, congrats to Corey for not following this insanity that is the Ronaldo story. Why would he? Today in MARCA ‘Reporters talk to Ronaldo’s dog-sitter and he says that Ronaldo is leaving’

    That is hardly news.

When the move happens, and Ronaldo is in his glory sitting in a Real Madrid jersey, then sure, write about it to your hearts content. But when day in and day out all you get are Spanish reporters running you around in a circle, it’s not worth it. Seriously. Dani Alves left Sevilla at least 15 times before he actually signed for Barcelona. You think I would report all that stuff? No, because that is a huge waste of a blogger’s time.

Corey is one of the most knowledgeable bloggers out here. (Way more so than myself). He is not just going to post a simple recap or a 2 paragraph post. He takes time to write his articles, and that is something that 90% of most bloggers don’t do. Quality over quantity.

Also, if you want to update us on Ronaldo’s housekeeper’s inside information, post a link in the comments and we’ll check it out.

    /end soapbox rant

As one of your 5 readers, you should be ashamed of the way you’ve covered the Ronaldo saga. You should be having exclusive interviews with anyone who’s ever come in contact with the man and his hair in order to get their useless opinions on whether or not they believe Ronaldo will use 2 lbs. of hair gel today. Why is this important?? This above-average amount of hair gelling as well as the hair’s noticeable lean to the left today surely indicates Ronaldo’s desire to don the white jersey and make his move to Madrid. Now why Corey doesn’t include these vital clues into the Ronaldo mystery, I have no idea. Marca and AS both have responded by sending reporters to interview the housekeeper…but think about it, how much do you talk to your housekeeper? Personally, I just say hello, but Ronaldo must be very close with the person who cleans his toilet!

Corey, clearly you should have responded by flying to Spain or Portugal or Italy to find out where Ronaldo gets his hair styled so that they might give you some good insight on the extra use of hair dressing and how that relates to Madrid’s chase. Instead you’ve just been working an actual job, moving into a new house, going to school, and having fun with your friends in the few months of warmth you get in the Northeast. YOU PIECE OF $#!T COREY! HOW COULD YOU! YOU ARE A SLACKER!

Needless to say, none of us will take anything that I’ve just said seriously. This is similar to the attitude that Corey (as well as myself and many others) have taken towards the Ronaldo saga, because everyday there are a myriad of useless and unsubstantiated stories concocted by the world’s most bored writers about some “inside” source who knows Ronaldo’s every intention. Corey, I commend you for ignoring this drivel, and only reporting what you see as meaningful. You’re a blogger, not a beat writer, and you aren’t getting paid to make up stories about Ronaldo’s favorite stripper. Personally, I really enjoy reading your blog because it’s knowledgeable and humorous, so keep up the good work. We’re just stupid Americans anyways.

Another James on the site.. ooo..

I don’t see anything wrong with the way the blog is set up. Football commentary is about being objective, analyzing, and most important of all loving the game. If people complain about the blog then they need to stop acting like spoiled brats.

You take what you can get, and you appreciate it. I love this site because it has so many different updates and opinions I learn a lot about smaller clubs less known clubs etc

Bottom line: If you don’t like it don’t read it, but constructive criticism is needed.

    :)

Corey you are doing a fine job. The Euros were covered by Cesar, Ryan and myself. You have a life. And the ridiculous CRonaldo saga is being aptly covered by everyone and their mother. So Corey, keep doing what you are doing and we love you. And to the readers, chill out, get a life, offer/volunteer your help either with Madrid with other Spanish teams on the Offside. The more the merrier.

Ryan- Thanks, I know you had this problem before and had to post something similar to this, and its a dilemma I think we all face. But your 100% right about the role bloggers play as well as the constant Ronaldo stories in the Spanish press. Its not worth covering until he either signs or doesnt. Thanks again, and great job with Spain during the Euros

Jame #1- You made me laugh, which isnt easy. But I liked it, and you are right just like Ryan, half of this stuff is silly, if you want to read it fo to Marca or the Daily Telegragh. I am not here to reguritate what they have already made up. Thanks for your support.

James #2- another one of you? I am surprised too, one thing I like about the Offside is how we can have real names as tags, not stupid stuff like Corey*7*Raul*7*. I agree that constructive criticism is needed, and it oftens drives you to be better, which this has done indeed. But at the same time, I have done what I could with the little bit of news I had. Thanks for the support though.

Elisa- I appologize, I forgot you were writing with Cesar and Ryan. You did a great job too, its why the Spanish Offside is so well represented out there on the internet. Thanks for the support, and I cant wait for the season to start so all us have things to write about again.

    Corey -

I think Ronaldo was covered just fine on this site - I remeber quite a bit of discussion about it. I too am a little unhappy with how RM have conducted things.

I think your commitment as a blogger is more than I could ever muster, good job as far as I’m concerned.

I think you can be an opinionated b@stard on some things and players, to the point of annoyance :-)

….it’s all good, I intend to read on.

PS Canavaro is overrated, Henzie is great; stop giving him a hard time - you know it deep down ;-)

Just want to chime in as a long time reader/commenter/fan. I wouldn’t keep checking this site every work day if I didn’t enjoy it and see value in it. I’ve always been impressed by your base of knowledge, especially when it comes to digging up all the info on other teams and giving previews to Madrid games (I can’t find that level of knowledge anywhere else, honestly, including the local pub) and also how much you know about RM’s youth system. I hope you continue to keep us informed. ‘Nough said, I’m off to the next post.

p.s. seriously - could you honestly start keeping track of Ronaldo’s daily hairstyles, with interpretations on what they may indicate? ‘Cause that would be sweeeeeet.

Let me echo everyone else’s comments about Corey’s perceived ‘lack of commitment’. You are a blogger, doing this for the love of football and Real Madrid; it’s not your job and you’re not an official news organisation. Frankly, given the amount of time an effort it takes me to update my own blog (less regularly than yours) I am amazed at both the amount and quality of your output.

I think elmero’s point in the other post was perhaps not as well made as he might have hoped; it was confrontational rather than constructive. If he doesn’t think your output is worth reading, he’s well within his rights to go elsewhere (I’ve got a tonof RM links on my site he can trawl through, especially if he speaks Spanish!).

A blog is a personal expression of how you feel about things. If you thought the summer was boring, that’s your prerogative. If you think the CR move to Real Madrid is a mistake (as I do) then youshould feel free to say so. Your job is not to reflect the majority of opinions of RM fans, just your own. That’s the whole point of opening the blog up for comments.

Oh yeah, and I reserve the right to disagree with you at any point in the future. After all, that’s what this is all about. I just happen to be in agreement here that the attack was somewhat over the top.

Don’t worry mate, you’re doing fine.

A blog can be whatever you want it to be.
Corey isn’t writing for Marca or As, he’s doing this to express his opinions about Madrid … so he can do whatever he wants to do on the blog.
If you don’t like it, there are 1000 RM blogs out there for you to read …
Its not easy to write a blog … it’s a labor of love!
I think you’re doing just fine. Don’t change anything.
