Deportivo Preview

By: Corey | August 29th, 2008

Holy shit, the league starts on Saturday. How desperate and starved I have been for some real Spanish football lately, its been torture. But alas, we have Jornada 1 on the horizon, and couple with the beginning of the NFL, its safe to say I will no longer be doing anything on the weekends now. My 55 inch tv and Lazy Boy better be ready to get re-acquainted with me!

Hot off the heels of a Robinho transfer drama that has seen Chelsea start selling shirts even though nothing has happened yet, and the uproar of Spanish teams claiming Real is acting un-ethically in their transfer dealings. As Calderon pointed out, he talked to club presidents at Vilarreal and Valencia about potential offers, and both times when he got a profound no, he backed off. It took the press a few days to catch up, so what looked like breaking news was something that happened awhile ago and now Cazorla and Villa have signed extensions. Its fine by me, Real could have paid their buy-out clauses without talking to the club.

So I take offense to this “Real acts un-ethically” bullshit. Now also in the news was that a deal for Sammy Etoo was stopped because of a big NO from the locker room and from the Real Madrid Offside. Okay, I made that last part up, but you get the point. Calderon does not dressing room unrest, as he is a smart man, and he listened to his players wishes. Again, I couldnt be more happy with how Calderon conducted himself.

Now, on to the preview. Deportivo La Coruna as you all may know, is one of those teams that kick started the “up-and-comer” era of Spanish football that still goes on today. The days of ‘Super Depor’ are dead and buried of course, but the team is still competitive atleast. I dont have time to put a preview up, I aplogize, but its the first weekend back to school, so I am a little busy. Ill post the match squads and stuff when they are available, and hopefully we will have a liveblog from Steve or Dancy, our newest Real Madrid Offside co-blogger.

Also, I started a La Liga fantasy league for everyone. Its called Real Madrid Offside and you can sign up here. You have to be invited to join the league, so leave me your email in the comments and I will add you. In the mean time, put your squad together! I already invited 30 or so of the regular commentors, but if you want to play let me know, or if you never got an email let me know too and leave your correct email. Thanks, and HALA MADRID!

We have a difficult match against Depor, they always play us very tough at their stadium, hopefully we’ll get a good result.

Regarding our starting eleven, I want to see what happens with Robinho, who knows, maybe Schuster starts playing him on away games, to take off the pressure he would have at the Bernabeu. I think he can still be a valuable player for us, so we’ll see…

Take care everybody, have a great weekend

PS: Corey, I know I’m not a regular, but I’m trying really hard to be one, I’d like to play in your fantasy league, if that’s still possible…, my email is: camador1976@hotmail.com

    Thanks

    HALA MADRID!!!!!!

miserable summer transfer market for us.has to be the first time we have missed out on almost all of our targets.but the team is better balanced than last year.we got better depth and cover in the midfield(only area to see some activity) but defense nd attack have remained the same.thats worrying.the way robinho has behaved , i would play drenthe over that pesetero in the away games to give glass boy some rest.count me in 4 d fantasy league, corey.d email is akshantp@gmail.com.

I’ve watched a bit of BabyDepor’s pre-season and Lotina seems to be playing 4 at the back, which is strange considering how well the 5-man backline worked for them last season with Filipe and Manuel Pablo as wing-backs. Omar Bravo could be a very tricky customer due to his pace, hopefully pepe can negate it with his own superb athleticism.

It’ll be great to see Valeron back at it again. What an incredible midfielder, pity about the injuries.

For us, Higuain deserves a chance definitely, he gives us something different in attack due to raul and nistelrooy’s lack of mobility. As for Robinho, I don’t think i could take Schuster giving him a start after his behaviour. He’d better work his balls off in training, plead forgiveness (publicly, through the same media in which he cried for a move), and then perhaps be re-instated into the squad. For now Robben’s looking good, and it’s high time Drenthe got a shot.

Corey, I’d like to play in the fantasy league as well, if possible. My e-mail is sambitmishra_10@msn.com

Kaushik, you should be in the league automatically since I invited you into it

Sambit, I agree about Robinho, and he has indeed been left out. Drenthe should get a chance, and Robben is in such good form that Robinho wont be missed.

Cesar and realrock- I just invited you.

HERE WE GO DAY 1 BABY! THE QUEST FOR THE TREBLE STARTS NOW! Clearly, I’m already drinking in anticipation for round 1.

Final score prediction: 3-2 Whites break the Riazor curse.

In other unrelated news, it looks like Valencia will actually be a contender again this year. I watched their match yesterday and they looked pretty solid. However, they did take down a weak Mallorca side that is a ghost of last year’s. HALA MADRID TODAY!

fkn hell, that was so incredibly disappointing. Schuster really has GOT to work on defending set-pieces. Ramos was really poor at marking his man.

and I think I may be a bit in love with Guardado.

at least I can find some solace in that Barca managed to somehow lose as well. Numancia’s wingback (i think his name is Carlos Bellvis or something) was very impressive.

I don’t understand why Guti has to align himself so close to Diarra. He’s completely ineffective in that position: he’s unable to play the role of ‘offensive fulcrum’ which is a big reason why we’re so stale on the attack. Set piece defending is miserable! Schuster should’ve made his substitutions much earlier: De la Red should’ve come in for Raul to allow Guti foward and Higuain to be in a striker’s position. Drenthe was useless. Dela Red should’ve taken those 2 free kicks in the Depor danger zone too… sigh…. the curse continues.

will this curse ever be broken? Im really dissappointed that Schuster never took Guti off earlier. I mean to give De La Red what was it 10 minutes, in which he done more than Guti did all game. Guti just looks lazy out there. He only does well when others around him does the dirty hard work and lays the ball to him to slip in an easy assist which im sure any average player could do. It also showed that we really need another striker, sure Raul works hard during the games he plays but we need someone besides Van Nistelrooy to score 20+goals a season. Sorry about all the backlash im just upset the record against Deportivo continues for at least another year.
