Real Madrid and Barcelona clash this Saturday at 2pm eastern (20:00 GMT) in the return leg of this season’s Clasico, the biggest derbi in the world. And this one could not be any more important, as Barca comes in to the game with a 4 point lead on Real at the top of the table with 5 games to go. The game also comes during the most pivotal time in Barcelona’s season as they have a Champions League quarter final against Chelsea before the game, which they drew 0-0. Meanwhile Real can count on this game to be their season decider, as only a victory will surely keep them in the hunt for their third straight league title with so few time games left in the season.

Barcelona of course are a fantastic team, with equal measure of attacking flair, possession based passing and a quickly adapting, high defensive line. Pretty much how you should play football, and I find it really tough to try and pick apart what they do wrong. We all know what we are up against, and that this past El Clasico was one of the most lop-sided ones in history, but Real do not have their backs against the wall this time.

Barcelona News:

Rafa Marquez is out for the season with a knee injury he sustained against Chelsea, which I guess is bad news for Real fans as Marquez’s habitual errors always present opposition teams with a chance at goal. Proof is in the pudding, check out the Chelsea game, where Marquez rolls the ball on to Drogba’s foot for a chance at goal that is not taken. Chances are Raul would not need to a second take to put that one away. Higuain might, but lets not get in to that.

I am pretty sure the Barcelona players are a little fatigued after trying their damnedest to break down Chelsea. I watched the match hoping to see some sort of defensive weakness to exploit, but instead I saw 9 Chelsea players behind the ball and Didier Drogba inside his own half most of the game. It was a pathetic display from Chelsea, and I find it outrageous that Chelsea, a representative of the English league, can claim to play in the best league in the world when they were stricken with fear by Barcelona and clammed up like that. Awful.

I applaud Barca for still going for it. I give two thumbs down to the English team. The truth is though that while I am confident that Real can get a result, Barcelona is an excellent team and it will take a lot to get a win against them. But I think it can be done.

Barcelona’s squad list will be posted when it becomes available.

EDIT x2: The eternal foe’s squad list….

Valdés, Jorquera; Pique, Puyol, Caceres, Sylvinho, Abidal, Alves; Xavi, Busquets, Toure, Keita, Iniesta, Hleb, Gudjohnsen; Henry, Bojan, Messi, Etoo

A full squad except for Milito and Marquez, with Victor Sanchez and Pedrito in the reserves.

Real Madrid News:

Since I wrote this up pretty early, I do not have a squad list yet but I will post that when it is made available. I can however tell you that Gabi Heinze has returned to training after recovering from knee pain, and will be fit for selection on Saturday. Arjen Robben still remains a doubt as of Tuesday, and my best guess is that he will miss the match with the shin problem he picked up against Getafe two weeks ago. Sneijder is of course out for the season and Gago has been training in the gym so far this week, but there are no immediate concerns towards his participation in the game. Pepe of course is suspended for the remainder of the season, so he is also out of the squad, but he has been training with the team this week. A nearly full squad for Juande to choose from for this pivotal match.

EDIT: Guti is out with a left ankle injury which he sustained in training today. DAMNIT!

Here is my expected lineup for Saturday:

—————-Casillas—————–
Ramos—Metzelder—Canna—Heinze
Higuain——Lass—–Gago—–Marcelo
———–Hunter—Raul————–

Bench: Dudek, Torres, Salgado, Javi Garcia, Drenthe, VdV, Huntelaar

No Torres, and no Hunter in the starting eleven. And no Saviola on the bench (awww).

First things first. I like Torres at left back better then Heinze, but lets be honest, Juande does not somehow. So I see Heinze starting with alot of help from Marcelo to watch over Messi. Containing Messi was the big issue the last time, but I dont think that is the main task this time. Sure someone will have to man mark Messi all game, but watching Chelsea and their snore fest of a team, it became pretty obvious that not allowing your defensive line any further then the top of the box, and your midfield line no close then 5 yards from them.

It basically creates a web that forces Toure/Keita and Xavi to pass more horizontally and not find either Iniesta or Etoo for quick give and go’s that create penetration through the lines. Likewise for Messi and Henry. Chelsea used two lines straight across the field, with a 5 man midfield, which basically did not let Barcelona players turn. When they did turn, three players converged on that player, squeezing his space to nothing and forcing either a turnover or an outlet pass to begin the process again.

Eliminating the vertical passing in tight spaces and keeping Iniesta, Henry and Messi from effectively turning in to space and running will limit the danger on Real’s back line. Hence a strong back four with a more mobile midfield thats not immensely attack minded, but can still do a job. Higuain provides width along with Marcelo, and Higuain will need to provide the linkage play and through balls, which he has been getting better at. Gago also will have to be very involved in the build up play without a true crack in the team, something that he has not always shown willingness to do. Its not the strongest lineup Juande can field against Barcelona, but its what he has available to him.

They key to this game, as most games, is to start well. No more nap time for the first 30 minutes of a game to the point where you have to climb out of a whole. An early goal is probably to much to ask, but not conceding early on and playing well, showing attacking intent and midfield strength will be essential. Barcelona’s confidence grows throughout the match when they see what they can get away with with each move. Showing no fear against them to start and playing compact and quick through Barcelona’s three man midfield and high defensive line.

Marcelo really needs to get at Dani Alves, who I see as a weak point of the team. Watching him against Chelsea was almost painful in his poor defensive stance against a very lacking Florent Malouda, and his predictable and unimaginative crossing. His pace will be a test, but he is so easily riled up and he goes down with an “injury” so quickly that Heinze really is gonna kick him to death if he starts over lapping to much. If Marcelo can keep challenging him on the wing, he is bound to win a few battles and get crosses in. He wont beat him for speed, or even skill, but he can really just keep trying to muscle his way past him and hope for the best.

The other weakness will be in the air. Pique is a very big guy, and Puyol has a good spring on him, so it seems silly for me to say this, but Huntelaar is just so damn good at heading balls on, holding play up with a trap, or just backing in to defenders for that matter. I think Huntelaar can win the aerial battle which could create problems for Barcelona only if Real gets good crosses in to the box for Huntelaar. Thats a big if.

EDIT x2: Squad to face the eternal foe….

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek
Defenders: Heinze, Torres, Marcelo, Ramos, Cannavaro, Metzelder, Garcia
Midfielders: Van der Vaart, Parejo, Gago, Lass, Robben, Faubert
Forwards: Raul, Higuain, Huntelaar, Saviola

Salgado, Pepe and Codina left out. Faubert makes the list, as does Heinze and Robben.

Game time is 2pm on Saturday, and I will be doing a Cover It Live blog for the match, so stop by to discuss the match or just read the play by play if you cannot watch the match where you are.

Lets not forget what happened the last time Barcelona visited the Bernabeu:

And of course, HALA MADRID!

Robben has fully recovered and has trained with his teamates and Sneijder trained outside but he trained alone so he can play some games left in the season

we are going to miss pepe.and watching the chelsea vs barca match i was thinking that messi wasn’t even on the field.so, everytime the commentator said his name,i thought, such a darn idiot,he isn’t even playing. yeah, but while we are all ripping chelsea a new one over parking the team bus,i think someone has to look at the other side of the coin too.

quite a lot of teams have tried the team bus tactic against barca and still have been run over. that chelsea did it successfully is something that i find praiseworthy. not much but gotta give credit. barca don’t play all that well when they are frustrated and under pressure.never have, never will. maybe that was what chelsea was hoping for.

this clasico is going to be madrid’s defense vs barca’s attack.barca is fearsome ofcourse but our defense is also on song. lets hope they are not off-key in this one.

    HALA MADRID.

Hey Corey, stop being so damned astute. Spot on about Alves. We’ve (well, some of us) have been on him over in our space about how he’s been having the suck of late, playing reasonable defense but really stinking out the planet on the attacking end. Never mind the free kicks.

I don’t know what the hell’s going to happen, frankly. My cule heart hopes that Messi and Eto’o are shamed by how they played against Chelsea, and will come out with guns blazing.

I expect and up and down affair, full of attacking football and style. Why? Because your lads are full of confidence right now, and think they can win the Liga. But to win it, they have to take it. Playing the type of match that they played in our house isn’t going to do it. And the Bernabeu fans would scream bloody murder if that happened.

Differences this time are Higuain riding a nice vein for form on your end of the pitch, and Iniesta is just playing crazy footy right now for us.

Good luck on Saturday, but not too good. :D

Keep in mind that Barcelona are experiencing their own defensive woes: Marquez just went down for the rest of the season, and Puyol has not had his best year, to say the least. We, unlike Chelsea, should still put out a side with a goal scoring mentality.

kevo – thanks for posting over here. I personally would only want Robben to come in as a sub. If you’ve been following this space then you’ll notice a lot of fans see Robben as both a blessing and a curse. He’s a gifted (if injury prone) player, but has some serious flaws – the most frequently criticized being his selfishness. He does have the ability to draw defenders and create space, but if he doesn’t pass to the open man, or put the ball into the open space, what good is that?

Still, as a sub late in the game he could be the difference maker. We’ll see. Here’s hoping for a cracker of a match.

    HALA MADRID!

Thanks Kxevin. Alves indifferent form was not hard to spot really, it was pretty painful to watch him play. He was irritating me not because he is a cule but just because he was being so damn annoying with all of his complaining, falling down and shotty work on the field.

I feel that we really have a chance in this game, but its going to come at a cost. Which means we will have to conceded some to score some, so plan on seeing lots of goals and a whole lot of passion. Cant wait for Saturday!

I see Robben as a second half sub simply because he can provide more of an impact as fresh legs for 30 minutes then anyone else off our bench. VdV does not provide energy and pace and Saviola has not seen a football pitch in years. So offensively, Robben is going to be brought on for Marcelo or Raul/Huntelaar in the second half for sure to give Barcelona’s tired legs some troubles. And he can be the difference maker late on for sure, but I like Higuain to make it happen for us.

Yeah I think robben starts on the bench, I just don’t see him having full match fitness. Actually, I’d be surprised if he plays at all. I agree with john in that the glassman is a true Jekyll and Hyde type player, and could provide a nice spark off the bench, but I really question his fitness. I think we’ll see heinze-Metz-canna-ramos, marcelo-lass-gago-VDFart, Raul-Higs. In light of Chelsea’s horribly boring but effective performance, I’m expecting Ramos to play stout defense and hopefully finish counters better than chelsea. Not my favorite tactic or prediction, but one I’m afraid will be correct.

Real Madrid should win this. Barca is still concentrating on the Champions League and even if they lose, they still lead by 1 point.

Madrid has more to worry about. If they win the title, it would be a good season.

I don’t like heinze playing in the game. it seems that if messi has at least his average day, gabi will give away plenty of free kicks or a penalty, or will earn a red. but I expect a lot of fouls on our side anyway.

what I like is the idea of robben as a sub. he isn’t too confident when it comes to big games, and if he has little space, he’s pretty much useless. towards the end of the game, however, his pace will be even more deadly to the opponent’s defenders and arjen will have to deal with less preassure, too.

I expect a game similar to that against sevilla last weekend. barca will surely lead the game most of the time, at least at the begining, but even if we concede first, we too are gonna have our chances and if real is good at something this season, then it’s taking advantage of the few opportunities they get. and barca tend to lose their confidence when something crops up for them.
I predict a narrow los blancos’ win with plenty of goals. It’ll be big! Hala Madrid!

So we both have banged up defensive units, eh?

Will Pep start Puyol and Caceres in the middle or Puyol and Abidal with Sylvinho on the left? Oh the things to ponder.

And also, Heinze is not going to have a good time against Messi. The little one is going to school his compatriot if Heinze is on the left of D. And Marcelo will try to contain Alves, but I doubt that will happen with Xavi slipping in to provide through balls, meaning Gago and Lass would have to be perfect at covering, which means Iniesta is free on the left…

Higuain is the one that scares me, not Raul. And if Hunter is out there, well, I haven’t seen him play much, so I don’t know, but Sylvinho will have problems with Robben if he starts, so that could leavea few gaps in the back for us.

Isaiah – I think Alves will need to be equally mindful of Marcelo. If Alves ignores his defensive duties, Marcelo has been bailing us out with his passing and shooting skills, and if he’s given some space, he’s been excellent with his decision making up front (not so excellent defensively, of course).

And is there any reason we shouldn’t expect a back line of Alves, Puyol, Pique, Abidal?

What a timing for the Classico…

After Sevilla game, Raul will be in the mood for this game. This is the first time this season I consider Raul as the main threat for RM.

Curious to see where Sergio Ramos will play. Specially if Iniesta and Messi played on the flanks. he is the most complete defender for RM, and his position in the Defense puzzle will decide a lot in this game.

Yet, Diara and Gago performance tonight will either complicate things for Barcelona or make it an easy path.

The game key players are: Higuin,Raul, Ramos, Diara and Gago Vs hm…I have no idea, because there is no way to predict Barcelona selection for this game. Chelsea game will be in mind, no way to avoid that.

Btw, good to notice that no one believes that Robben is better than Iniesta anymore. It was one of the most weird arguments after the December game.

Alright, I will stop running in circles. I just hope to see a good game. Another December performance will make Chelsea fans nag again about the smartness of negative Tactics. Please don’t let it happen!

Hello RM fans, I’ll be watching the game today in Nicaragua, where I’m at the moment because of my brother’s wedding (big cule BTW)!!!!

Against Barcelona, the key is holding on to the ball, we don’t have the personnel to pull off a CHelsea against them, specially with Heinze and all his recklessnes on the pitch; I’d leave Gago out, and go with either VDV, or Parejo, maybe this could be a redeem game for Rafa, and Parejo’s breakthrough performance…, if only Juande had the cojones….

Ok, that’s that, take care everybody, enjoy the match, and have a great weekend
