Esteban Granero Moves to Getafe

By: Corey | July 14th, 2008

I was surprised, and more so pissed off when I read that one of the pearls of Castilla signed for Getafe permanently. The news broke yesterday and I had a post all ready that was entitled Mijatovic/Portugal You FU$#*%^G IDIOTS! But I decided it would be best to not shower you with explitives and let my anger subside to rationalize this move, so I trashed that post. After thinking about it all night, to the point where I forgot to do some homework thats due today (whatever), I have come to a few conclusions.

The first is I was this pissed off last summer when Real shipped out De la Red, Javi Garcia and Granero (the first time). It subsided though, much like it did the year before that when Arbeloa and Soldado were let go, while I was infuriated with the Jurado move, and the recent losses of the Callejon brothers, Nieto, and David Moreno have not gone down well either. It seems Real is hell bent on producing exceptional talent only to sell them for a few million squid to a lowly Liga team and see them develop into solid players. No better example then Juanfran, who is a very good player for Osasuna, but had so much promise for Castilla except Figo, and then Beckham, kept him out of the team.

I have always had a strong emphasis on the development of youth in clubs, as I feel its essential to the mainenance of a club’s financial health as well as its sporting potential. But Real just cant keep its youth players in its first team. But this is a different position they find themselves in. Real has two excellent central midfielders in Diarra and Gago (finally!). They have just bought back two more excellent central midfielders that they originally sold. And they also have an number of players who play sorta centrally in Guti, Sneijder and Baptista. They are a little crowded in the center of the pitch now.

So Granero would not get many games then? I dont know, I felt he could have filled in for Guti often, or even Sneijder. But at Getafe he will get in to every game, and this is important for his development. So while he leaves us, he will return one day, as long as his progress is consistent and encouraging.

Here is the official statement on the website:

For those of you who arent fluent in Spanish (Im not fluent, but I can get around with it), what this says is that he has signed a 5 year deal with Getafe, and thanks him for playing for Real (he never did! Only the youth teams). What it doesnt tell you is that its got a buy back clause in it, but the dirty details are not yet known fully. A transfer fee and the yearly raise in the buy back clause fee will soon be disclosed I assume.

So we have sold another promising youngster to a La Liga team with a buy back clause, and it seems that like the Callejon brothers (well, one is at Espanyol, the other looks increasingly likely to join) and Nieto, its a simple formula. Impress with Castilla, earn a move to a La Liga team. Impress with the La Liga team, and move back to Real. What are your thoughts on this strategy?

Real Madrid’s cantera is a feeder farm for the rest of La Liga, simple as that.

I know, its disappointing, but if its good enough to feed the rest of La Liga why isnt it good enough for Real’s first team?

i must admit that right now i think that caldo nd pedja r idiots(lots of other things too but i would rather keep the expletives down).we really needed a good amf.because de la red is more of a cdm dan a playmaker.think gago with physique.nd i think that a double pivot of those two will give us the attacking prowess we need without taking away the defense.nd wat we are doing with the youngsters seems borrowed from serie a.loan or sell them to smaller teams where they can grow in an environment where they are given more playing time nd more attention too. don´t get me wrong , i would love to see more castilla products in the white shirt and granero and parejo and the others are good enough but they have to grow in the league before they can be brought to the white house. one reason why not many youth team players are given a chance is castilla´s relegation to segunda b.the gap is too much.younsters need continuos exposure to the pressures of liga before they can be expected to become superstars. its not fair to hand a kid his debut in front of 80,000 screaming fans when he has never faced that kind of pressure before.we can´t have an arsenal like situation.a host of talents but bare trophy cabinets. youngsters need time for growth and its better to let them have dat at lesser clubs before bringing them back.if granero has great season , i don´t think he will b left at getafe by el real.

Granero is number one on the list of Castilla players I want to see play for Madrid, even in front of De la Red. For some reason, I thought that he was a sure thing - turns out I was wrong. I, like Corey, freaked out and got pissed off when I first heard that he had signed with Geta. But the one-year buy back option calmed me significantly. Overall, though, despite our crowded midfield roster, I still would have rather he earn a spot on Madrid’s bench, and try to impress his way into the starting XI. After all, that’s the way we integrate foreign talent, right? Why not give our youngsters the same chance? Still there’s no doubt he’ll get a lot more playing time in the current scenerio. Let’s hope he impresses and rejoins us next year.

I’m also a little less pissed about the deal, because I’ve been a Getafe fan since they last got promoted. I’m hoping Soldado joins Esteban in blue (though I have to say, I don’t have high hopes for a Getafe led by Victor Munoz - no disrespect to the great man).

Its not bad that he goes to Geta with a buy back clause, because we all know he will be back eventually, he is to talented to let go, and he even said that he will one day succeed at Madrid, so I feel better about this move. With the crowded midfield situation we have, its best he moves for some copious playing time, because Schuster has a distrust of youngsters, especialy Castilla products.

I hate to say it, but it looks like Schuster has no faith in the cantera and keeps bringing in foreign players. Schuster knows he needs instant success to keep his job and this is how he feels he can accomplish his goals and the goals of the club and supporters.
