Garay to Barcewhat the hell?
By: Corey | February 6th, 2008I awoke this morning to see the Ezeqiual Garay has been confirmed for Barca. Francisco Pernia, head of Santander, has comfirmed the deal because Ezeqiual had Barca in the lead. WtF?!? Whats the deal here, he was suppose to sign for us this summer. This is not good news, we better start looking somewhere else, because we are gonna need another big summer recruitment drive for the defense. This is crap, everyone is allowed to say bad things about Mr. Garay from now on.

The deal isn’t completely confirmed yet, though it does look pretty likely. I wonder what the price will be, really, and whether a backup is worth the amount they’re going to be asking. At 21, Garay has the potential to replace basically anyone there is — specifically Puyol a few years from now — so hopefully this pans out for us. So I expect a price of something like 10-12million euros (isn’t that like 75million US dollars by today’s exchange rate? Ziiiing).

Yeah seeing as how you post from the US thats not much of a zing, but nah Santander wanted 15 million and because Lyon offered that much and given Real, Juve and Liverpool were also interested, its not gonna be below that unless Santander have some sort of love affair with Laporta…

It was a sarcastic zing.
Hmm, I hadn’t heard 15mil, but I’ll trust you, blanco that you are…If Lyon really have offered 15, I imagine that it’ll be 20. Which is stupid. Why buy a defender in progress for 20mil when you could have other, lower-profile, also developing players for 5mil or 10mil max? I disagree with the hyperinflation of transfer fees and I’m hoping that Laporta can pull of some behind-the-scenes deal where we send Ezquerro to them plus 10mil for Garay. That’s a pipe dream, obviously, but wouldn’t that be sweet. For, you know, me. Not anyone else.

His fee is very inflated, but then again Santander needs the money and even though he is still a U-21 international, a few good performances on a big team and he is a shoe in for the full national team. So is the fee just? Probably not, but its what you have to pay to get talent these days.
