Getafe (Real Madrid B) and the Mini-Madrid Derbi

Real Madrid vs. Getafe
Santiago Bernabeu Madrid, Spain
10/31/09 18:00 (1:00pm)
Jornada 9

I say Real Madrid B not as a derogatory term of course, because I <3 (heart) Getafe like many of us here on the site do, John being singled out as the most unabashed supporter. It is worth pointing out that 5, possibly 6 former Castilla players will line up for Getafe on Saturday in the Bernabeu, where they should all get a round of applause. And Getafe's trainer is none other then Real Madrid legend and Castilla collaborator Michel. Its a big family affair on Saturday to say the least. Ohh, and Getafe's president is a Real Madrid socio…. cant deny the love for our neighbors to the south.

Getafe takes the metro up to the Bernabeu for a mini-Madrid derbi at a time where Real Madrid finds itself in need of a convincing win not to get the press or fans off its back, but to restore some belief in the title charge this season. Defeat to a third division side will do that to a team. There is so much swirling around this game that its tough to really put all in to one post. But I am a little late today so you have to excuse my barely putting any of it in. School is hectic right now, and Im looking for a job to which means I am constantly going to info sessions during my spare time. Its a tough economy, what you gonna do?

Getafe Team News:

I want to break down Getafe, I really do, but in the interest of time I will do a quick run down. We are familiar with these players and Michel’s tactics anyways, being Getafe closet fans.

Miguel Torres recovered from a knock that kept him in solitary training until yesterday, and Kepa Blanco has also returned to normal training after an injury setback has kept him out of the season so far. Michel has also recovered David Belenguer and Pedro Rios, both who also have no minutes this season, so his group is getting a little bigger and a little more competitive for places.

I cant find a published squad list anywhere, just the news that Belenguer has returned to the team, so Ill just give you my starting eleven.

————-Ustari———–
Torres—-Cata—Mario—Mane
——Celestini—Boateng——-
Pedro Leon—-Parejo—-Albin
————Soldado———-

The only changes I could see are Manu for Albin, Adrian Gonzalez for Boatend and Belenguer for Cata Diaz because he has played every match this year. Other then that, Michel has a pretty set lineup to work with.

Michel on returning to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid Team News:

SQUAD LIST:
Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek
Defenders: Arbeloa, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo, Albiol
Midfielders: Gago, Diarra, Kaka, Lass, Xabi, Van der Vaart, Granero
Forwards: Raul, Benzema, Van Nistelrooy, Higuain.

So much for the Castilla players training with the first team. As you can see, Lass returns to the squad despite not being at training for almost a week…. This match will be a little weird for Pepe after what happened last year. Lets hope we dont have a repeat.

Guti is dropped after his flair up that was neither confirmed nor denied I suppose. Im not one to judge because I have a bias towards Guti, and both player and coach are denying it. Metzelder and Drenthe are also dropped after some horror defending in the Copa. Would you really want to play the next match after such shenanigans. Especially at home? Pellegrini is protecting his players, or in the case of Drenthe and Guti, sending a clear message of ‘enough is enough’. You be the judge, but I am going with protection, because neither would have started anyways.

Ruud makes the squad list to everyone’s delight, meaning we might see a selection of our two best striker at the moment. Marcelo will be at left back, where Pedro Leon will torment him. Pellegrini really is tempting the fates it seems. Everyone is calling for Arbeloa at left back, but I just do not see it happening. Pellegrini has a strange fascination with rotations, but he does not like playing people out of position. He will stick with Marcelo it seems.

This is a must win, because the team has been shit the past two weeks. Pellegrini’s job is most definitely not on the line, but another loss to add to the bad run and it could be (shouldn’t be but thats the way Marca likes it). I was thinking of calling for his head after the Alcorcon debacle, but how was that his fault? He put a decent lineup out there against a third division side and they got hammered. Look not further then the toothless players on that one.

Granero was interviewed about Pellegrini’s sticky situation.

Pellegrini talks about Guti, the pressure and rotations.

My lineup is as follows:

————–Casillas————–
Sergio Ramos—Pepe—Albiol—Marcelo
——-Granero—Xabi—Lass——-
—————Kaka————–
———Benzema—Raul———-

I might be vilified for saying this but lets face it: Kaka has sucked big time during this barren run. He was given the chance to be the focal point of the attack and he never showed up. He didnt play in the Alcorcon game, but then again would you have known he played in the other two games, or even the Sevilla game? Forgettable performances. Same goes for Benzema, who’s suckitude begins from Jornada 1 of the season. Maybe its playing with Raul, or maybe he really is not good enough yet for this team. But Pellegrini can only give him so many chances to do something before he has to start Higuain. In the San Siro, I want Pipita.

The midfield looks fine by me, except Lass needs to get his head together and stop bursting forward. He is a defensive midfielder, he should rarely be further up the pitch then Xabi Alonso, otherwise why dont we just use Xabi as the DM since he is sitting back anyways? Pellegrini either needs to fix this or needs to stop telling Lass to move forward, because the boy is confused about his place in the world right now.

I want to see a win, and a comprehensive win at that. But that would be down playing Getafe, who can be brilliant when they want to. If Pedro Leon is on, and the Castilla boys want to put on a show, then we will have a tough game on our hands. But Getafe has been miserable on its travels except for the opening day win against Racing. Its a short trip, but its still an away game, so Michel needs to pump so psychological voodoo in to his lads domes to get over the away day jitters.

We did not record a podcast this week because we have switched up our meeting time and some of us, no one being named, forgot to meet. It was not me. Its tough to coordinate when Mark is 12 ahead of me and Kevin, and Adam is 6 hours or so ahead. It means I may be sitting down for dinner, Adam may be getting ready for bed and Mark is waking up super early before work to record. Please appreciate the circumstances and we will return next week. There sure was alot to talk about this week too…

Game will not be on GolTV, and I am not entirely sure why, but it seems that the other team in Madrid got the pick of the week with a trip to San Mames for new coach Quique Sanchez. Good luck with that one Pathetico. Anyways, streams abound on the internet, so if you find a good one leave it in the comments. I have not done a live blog in a while, but this match will not be the next. Probably next weekend’s trip to Calderon will get me in a live blog mood. See you back here at game time for confirmed lineups and in-match comments.

HALA MADRID!

My weakness for Guti would not excuse him talking back to the coach, but if Guti denied it, stated that he had an excellent relationship with Pellegrini hence why he stayed this summer and said his conscious is clean, and Pellegrini likewise said it was a non-issue and that the two talk 1v1 all the time, then whats the issue?

Read the actual interviews with the parties in question, not the speculating, hypothesizing and rumor mongoring that the dailies such as Marca, Sport, AS etc. come up with when such incidents occur. Second hand reports are half the reason these flair ups occur, the other half being the malice that the staff of say Marca has for Real Madrid.

That red card on Albiol was bullshit. I hope the league rescinds it and gives him a yellow instead.

Top effort from RM. Xabi needs to improve; Lass seemed like he was taking on all of Getafe running from one side to the other and winning out; Pellegrini finally played Arbeloa on the left and much more stability.

In any case, I think Pellegrini has identified the major issue as to why the team is not playing the way he wants it to. We have players more suited to counter-attacking football. The goals today came from those situations. Kaka, Benzema, Higuain all are so effective when counter-attacking…and when you add Ronaldo to the mix it becomes even more clear. Pellegrini will have to work hard and let’s hope it comes to fruition. I hope this clears any doubt on Pellegrini, but I know it won’t. The press and critics are just waiting for the next loss.

Finally, Pipita. Should have got the hatrick, unlucky that the shot hit the pole. Big improvement from the previous five games and I think he has to start against Milan. Great finishing. Benzema was a bit unlucky but he’s improving. I think he was much better in movement and involvement when he is paired up with Higuain.

MOTM: Pipita and Lass…I can’t decide between the two.

Lassana Diarra more than deserves the #10 jersey. It’s amazing that we got this player from Portsmouth. A real diamond in the rough.

    He’s our Michael Essien.

Hey guys I didn’t get to watch the match, so I was curious, how did arbeloa perform at leftback? Was he superior to marcelo/drenthe? Could someone who watched the game gimme their take? Thanks guys.

His performance was a little deceiving, in that we have arguably the worst left backs in European history on our squad.

But I think Arbeloa is the best LB we’ve had in the longest time. I like him more than Carlos.

corey, obviously there’s going to be ambiguity, and no one will know what actually happened. and that’s fine. i’d argue there’s as little sense speculating that the coach is lying about an injury to “protect his player” as there is in believing or not believing a tabloid’s report about what happened at halftime. if you’re a fan, of course you’ll be inclined to believe whatever’s most favorable–that’s just life. i do think, though, that guti’s generally shitty attitude and gesture to the alcorcon fans merit a benching. i think sitting him is protecting your team from guti more than protecting guti from the fans, but that’s just my perspective.

i find your thoughts on “malicious” marca even more interesting than your views on protecting guti, though. just how cheerleader SHOULD a newspaper be for real madrid? maybe just not report on the 4-0 losses at all? i’m not sure how they could have spun that game as propaganda for the machine, but i firmly believe that if they could have come up with a way by press time, they would have.

Solid game by Real tonight and i really liked the fact that we had control of the game basically the entire game and one man down.

Other positives from this game was that the team had pace. Im a big Raul defender (i think he gets lots of shit he does not deserve) but he slows the game down. man, just cant wait until CR comes back instead of Marcelo in midfield.

The defensive effort from our attackers was worth recognizing. Kaka and pipita was determined to get the ball back many many times.. Even Benz looked much better pressuring than he has ever done in the white jersey..

The team is much more balanced with 4-2-3-1 and it is obvious that Valdano must get us a LB during the winter transfer window.. I wouldn´t mind getting rid of Drenthe but i guess we wont get much for him in January. Marcelo is bad but good enough to be a backup LB and LW in case CR needs a rest..

Now lets hope this Real Madrid show up at the San Siro on Wednesday..

    HALA MADRID!

About today’s game, first of all, Getafe had a very bad game. Haven’t seen them before but playing with a player advantage for the whole game and creating only 2 chances from set pieces is pretty pathetic.

As for our team, we had an ok perfomance considering the early red card. Lass and Kaka had good games and it showed both in defence and attack. Not many chances created but enough for Higuain who reminded me of last season where he always delivered when things got tough. Pellegrini made a good sub to get Gago in for Benzema and that’s where the game ended.

The ref was bad, he allowed some obvious fouls and players from both sides got frustrated. Unfortunate that we got 2 yellows for protesting and Albiol’s red…though we might appeal that one.

PS: That Osasuna equalizer made my day. Hala Madrid!

Jeremy: Valid point, and my comment on Marca being “malicious” to my mind is pointed at the fact that while they may be biased towards Real Madrid, a ‘cheerleader’ as you say, they often are the ones who stir up the most trouble as well. Several rumors of disputes and unhappiness in the locker room that were totally unfounded from this season can be traced back to them. This business about Pellegrini having two games to save his job, Marca. The cover of Marca today was a picture of Guti and Pellegrini silhouetted, face to face as to give the impression they were going head to head. Here is the link: http://www.marca.com/multimedia/primeras/09/10/1031.html

They can report losses or wins, it does not matter to me. Its the way they come up with fabricated rumors to sell papers that bothers me. Most sports new is just that, but Marca seem to stand out as the worst. I could care less if they were pro or anti Madrid, I wont read it.

They are a two faced outfit. On one hand their almost unbiased joy when Real does well is sort of sickening in that they have little journalistic integrity. On the other hand, when Real is not doing well, the play the devils advocate like no other, and it only makes things worse. I do not like Marca obviously, as a Real fan I can separate the two. Many people cant. No offense to you, it was not a personal attack, I just have very strong opinions towards Marca and its connection to Real.

I think this shows that higuain deserves a place in the first team. I dont think he had to score two goals today to show that since he should have been a starter due to his performances last season. Anyways, good game. I’m happy with the team playing this way. Lass was playing his heart out. Higuain for his 2nd goal ran from behind the far right hand side of the pitch all the way up with amazing pace.

Raj, your comment is just silly. I dont believe if we lost this game that pelligrini should be on the shopping block so i will have to disagree with you there. We needs stability and not more change. All this change is, in my opinion, a main part in what happened the last 2 weeks.

Barca dropping points today is a good thing, and a good moral boost for us ahead of a bad week.

Ryan, usually Corey does a post match report of the game that would feel like you watched your game. If not, then Cesar can do the same awesome job. Just wait a few hours, maybe a day and it would be up.

About Marca, their paper ain’t journalism. More of a propaganda paper. With experience though, you can read through the lines and make some observations.

For example during Calderon, they were 100% against him, they waged war to the whole management and they eventually managed to make him resign with the so-called “scandals”.

During Boluda, they were neutral but in the Perez era, Marca has come back to the old days where they are more of Press Office of Madrid than a sportspaper. During the summer, it was rediculus how true every single transfer bit they said was true. In my mind there ain’t a single doubt they are influenced by Perez. Many incidents can show that, like in the end of the transfer period, how they they had on cover Ribery saying “final push” etc. in order to deviate people’s anger at Robben being sold. EVERYONE knew that Ribery would stay at Bayern but they kept saying it and then they switched to “done deal for next summer”.

Another example of how manipulative the spanish media and Perez are the latest total war Marca has declared on Pellegrini in order to make him the scapegoal and deviate people’s criticism towards the management who made serious errors in the transfer period and they’ve already started to show (no left-back and no winger back-up).

Anyway, conclusion is don’t believe that everything Marca or AS writes is true, generally don’t trust blindly the media.
