Guti Ends 24 Year Association With Real Madrid

: (

Sad face is the best I can do to describe my emotions towards Guti leaving. To think its been 15 years since he broke in to the first team… I feel like I have been a Real fan forever now. My second favorite player has left the club, and it is a huge loss to the 12 year old me who use to practice taconazo’s and no look passes in the yard just like Guti. He will be missed gravely. Goodluck in Turkey with Bernadine, and lets hope you come back after retiring to coach with Ruben and Raul. More thoughts on Guti can be viewed here, when I did a post discussing his abilities and time with the club at the end of the season.

Check out the links for highlight videos and the club’s official release on the player as well as a special thanks from Florentino Perez. A fitting end that he took the press conference with Jorge Valdano, the man who gave him his debut in 1995.

Adios muchacho….

You know,if i were spanish and a real madrid fan,I'd feel the same.and i love guti very much.He came to beşiktaş now and you all can see him if you have a match.i mean,i understand the way you feel.and a football player like guti's talents can come to real, but a man like guti can't.

  • Ah Pipita, everything about him says he was born to play for Real Madrid. :)

  • Hearing the fans at the bernabeu singing Raul Raul Raul when the captain finished his speech today was fantastic

  • o and Deepak Higuain will take over from Guti in the " I dont want Barca to ever win " department , he has publicly rooted against barca in the CL in the past couple of years or so :-)

  • yea Canales runs a bit like a Kaka but his passing has Gutierrez written all over , watch this next clip and say it isnt so ( yea yea i know thats a lot of vid posting but i am amazed at the kid's intelligence when it comes to passing the ball so i have to share it with you :-) )

I thought i'd be fine with him leaving but this sucksssssssssssssssssssssssss

i think Lass is sheer class at one job clearing the midfield up - that's it

  • Kaushik

Raul presser going on... I'm really sad now :(

btw guys what happened to that contact rumours with javi martinez or r we happy with lass, gago?..

  • super madridsta

Captaincy is according to who has been in madrid for most time
    Cassillas then Ramos,then Momo(if kept),then higuain/marcelo

  • evo

What's wrong with Ronaldo wearing the captain's armband? to me he was a true leader on the pitch last season.
What's he got to do to get your loyalty exactly?
Some of you guys are swayed by the press and popular opinion way too much.
For example, what would be bad about Ashley Cole? He's one of the best left backs in the world. I don't care if he cheated on his missus or whether he texted pictures of his junk to some woman.
Don't be fooled by the press.

  • ka

@deepak -- there is always mourinho to do that stuff..be rest assured with that :P

  • ka

Pretty sad to see this, but as many people said it had to happen sometime..start of new era and i am optimistic with casillas as our captain...
I hope folks like sarabia can step up and take raul's position..
@specialjames---i think canales is adaptive, skilled and versatile enough(know am sounding too optimistic) to be our new guti..people need to stick with him and groom him with all the support thats needed...
yeah looks like marcelo with be our lb ..i hope and pray we stick with marcos alonso instead of selling/loaning him out, people say first team football and all shit but honestly guys its better he stays in madrid...takes the oppurtunities as he gets..

  • Real_7

@Andres: i am actually with you on that Canales looks very much like a young Guti back in the early days, i hope he develops to a more consistent one too.he sure got the talent.and i hope the Madrid fans give him all the support he needs
@special james: Captaincy in Madrid is always based on who has been longer with the team, not spanish based. if you go back a few years back we had Hierro then Redondo then Raul.
    afterwords it was Raul,Guti,then R.Carlos.
so i guess now it will be Casillas,Ramos, and the third one would be one of Higuain,Gago, and Marcelo..cuz we got them all at the same time and they are the senior players now(my pic would be Higuain ).so no way Alonso can get it(even though it will suit him some how).
regarding the LB..i think if we couldn't get Cole,it will be Marcelo for sure...so we all will have our hearts on a possible heart attack every single game we play.
finally there is no words to describe the feelings for Raul...my all time Madrid Favorite. it will be so strange to see him wearing anything but white..he deserve all the good things ... a very rare gem in madrid...

  • SpecialJames

Is Canales more like kaka or Guti? I think Kaka and we may need to get a young playmaker to replace Guti. Ozil isn't a bad idea.@CS, We are not buying any LB, Marcelo is our LB. How Mourinho trusts him is beyond me. Anyway, selling benz is trouble. What happens if Higuain gets injured. Kaka,Ronaldo,Dimaria,Canales may all deputise but they are no No9 neither are the comfortable in the role. They can't even act as a false 9 or a deep lying forward, much less the main role. What happens if we need a target man or a central striking option? Benz stays.

  • I'm pretty sad about Guti & Raul leaving.

And I agree with Andres on Canales being closest to Guti. But who's going to say "I want Barcelona to lose all their matches" after Guti, there's no one, we have San Iker who is all chummy with those Cules, Sergio Ramos is the closest to Guti in kicking ass but when he opens his mouth, he predicts a 3-0 victory and WE end up losing, I think we need someone to even out the bull-shit of the Cules! WHY GUTI, WHY GUTI, WHY NOT GAGO!!!!! :'(

  • Vish

Nice point Bobby... maybe Canales will eventually morph into more of an 'orchestrating' type of role.

@Andres: the clips certainly show Canales as having some amazing vision for a kid that young, but he seems more like a Kaka than a Guti.

I somehow think that Mou has something special in mind for Kaka. From his comments it seems like Kaka and Benzie are his 'pet projects' this year. Would be great if Kaka was played in a more central advanced position and returned to his best.

Any more news on the Marcos Alonso story? The English news sites seem to think its all but a done deal. Curiously, the Spanish sites dont have too much mention of it. If Mourinho is actually going after a central defender (and I hope its Carvalho), then M Alonso would be a great backup to Arbeloa/Marcelo. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the boy stays :)

  • SpecialJames

Well, Casillas is our Captain, First Vice Sergio Ramos, 2nd Vice Alonso. All our captains have to be spanish. Don't worry Zizou, Ronaldo can never wear the armband. And with Casillas set to stay another 10yrs at least,Ramos would have retired or gone to play for another club like Guti. I think the future captain is probably Higuain,or Marcelo if they stay that long or Canales.

  • Who will replace Casillas and Guti as vice captains along with Sergio Ramos? Momo Diarra? Marcelo? Yikes.

  • Syafiq

anyway, i just noticed that bilbao share the same feelings like us too. new captain for them too this coming season.

  • Syafiq

    @texanspaniard; i feel you too.

  • i know this is youtube and it can make a player look better than they actually are but if you watch Canales closely in those videos youll notice how intelligent he is with his passing the kid has vision , check them out

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch#!...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch#!...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch#!...

  • you guys have already said everything that needed to be said , it's going to be really weird to see them wear another team's jersey , but it had to happen someday didnt it ?

Re Canales he is the closest one to Guti , he has great Vision, the best out of the players we have, but he still needs some years to get to Guti's level we just have to realize that there is no one like our moody blondie and learn to live with that

Re Mourinho i dont see him taking any of our players with him , when was the last time a player that we wanted to keep left us ? you could say Robinho but the club wanted to trade him for Ronaldo and even drenthe was making more money than him which tells us that the club wasnt really serious about keeping him and the only reason the Maicons and carvalhos want to follow him to Madrid is because Real Madrid is more appealing than their current clubs , he couldnt prize any Chelsea player away to Inter could he ? so i would not even worry about that if i were you guys

  • I agree with everything Vish is sayin. He mention Canales plays a little further up the field but when Guti was younger he played as a second striker at times. so ya never kno

  • texanspaniard

I don't know what to say about Raul leaving. I am going to be quite shattered over it for certain. My favorite player of all time.

  • Vish

Wow, I can't believe this day has actually come. Guti has left, and Raul will be gone today. You somehow cannot imagine our club without the two of them.

I actually think we're better equipped to handle the departure of Raul, whereas Guti will be far more difficult to replace. There are very few players in World football that have the play-making ability that Guti had. Such high quality play-makers (Pirlo, Ozil, Cesc, Xavi) have entire teams built around them and would almost never be allowed to leave. Which is why we should go the extra mile and sign Ozil if he's available.

This, of course, assumes that we don't have a canterano who can step up. Do we have such a player that is ready to make the step up?

We have Canales (not a canterano, I know), who is supposed to be a player in the Guti mould, but from what I've seen he seems to play much farther up field.

Still, I think this will mark the start of a new era of ACHIEVEMENT for Real Madrid. We need to start winning major titles regularly in order to justify our tag of being the greatest club. And i honestly think Jose will stay for AT LEAST 4 yrs. The challenge he is after at Real Madrid, imo, is winning a glut of titles with Real a la the 1956-66 era.

  • Ryan McManus

yeah, zizou, the only reason I knew that was because I was wondering the same thing and looked it up, lol.

  • Zizou

And I found this interview, it is longer than the one on the website but I didn't understand any of them so this might be the same thing lolz
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
So enjoy labomba, Andres and any of the other spanish speaking people.

  • Zizou

I say that because we now had 2 vacant captain positions and it will be intresting to see who gets them- it wasn't a random thing :)

  • Zizou

That does remind me though, we better no fucking way let Ronaldo ever wear the armband.

  • Zizou

Muna you asking me if i'm worried about Ronaldo leaving? :) he hasn't done it in the past i don't think, I mean I don't know much about Di Maria and if he is loyal, but most of the players we have seem loyal, maybe Gago would want leave if he shines under Mourinho and Drenthe maybe but I can't see many others. Anyways you shouldn't worry about that if they don't want to stay, they can leave simple.

Ryan I had completely forgot him haha my fact is in-correct.

  • Ryan McManus

well, we have dudek who's like 37 or 38. but yeah, we have a young squad which is good.

  • Muna

Zizou, that's a cool fact but i'm a little bit afraid because Mourinho might take some of our promising youngstars with him when he finally leaves the club especially ronaldo. i have a feeling he'll have a very good relationship with ronaldo that ronaldo might just want to go wherever mourinho goes. just like the case of maicon. don't you think?

  • Zizou

    Btw*

  • Zizou

ahhh 22fan thats very good news, i'd love to get an Alonso no.14 jersey in a few years. Although the only thing is that Alonso is like 28 so at least if Canales had it the hopefully he'd wear it for the next 14 years like Guti.

Bwt guys here's a cool fact, now them 2 have gone, I don't think we have a single player in his 30's?

  • 22fan

zizou, i don't think canales would take the #14. not that i even want to think about anyone besides guti in that number (makes his leaving seem very real :( ), but guti said that xabi's been waiting for the #14. since he wears it for the nt, i assume if someone's up for it, it would be xabi before canales.

  • Zizou

oh yeah Corey well done for putting this up even though your on vacation, I actually thought this was Bassam until someone pointed out it was you.

  • CS

@ Special James - I have heard that Hernandez will be loaned out next season, and the rumors linking Benzema to ManU include Berbatov being sold for funding.

Personally, I wouldn't mind swapping Benzema for Evra. I have not read or heard anything to justify these comments, but I would rather have Evra than Cole. Before WC2010, I had heard nothing negative about Evra's character, which can't be said for Cole.

In regards to striker depth - I think moving Benzema wouldn't hurt us too badly. We saw last season that Benzema and Raul rarely saw playing time, and that Kaka flourished the further up he played (and when healthy). We also have some strong ST in Castilla that I would love to give playing time, and Canales could play there, as well.

  • Aliyu

tired of watching realmadridtv. Cause the clips of guti & raul really make me wanna cry.

  • SpecialJames

Benzema won't leave Bobby, we now only have 2 strikers. God forbid injuries, both they'il both get playing time. And Man Utd? I don't knw hw they'il accomodate another striker, with Rooney,berbatov,hernandez....Benz will definitely warm the bench there.

  • Zizou

Raul i'm not to worried about leaving, as we thought we'd have a problem with amount of time Benzema would get but now thats cool, Guti though had a rare fucking gift and i'm pissed i never got a Guti jersey over the years as you just never expect them to leave.

  • Zizou

Well Canales should take the no.14 and maybe that Sarabia guy take no.7 next year.

    Bobby Benzema won't leave.

  • Hey everyone i know that this is a wayyy off topic but i'm thinkin, with Raul leaving, and Benzema now being widely speculated to be Sir Alex's last signing that leaves us on the ropes for strikers. we have pipa, Ronaldo can play as a striker but we never even replaced a squad spot for ruud. its late in the transfer window and we may need some more depth up top? we cant got into the season with 1 striker and one sometimes striker somtimes winger. we'll need another forward ya think?

  • its odd on a day like today, how instrumental guti has been for me on FIFA10. just rippin it up lol

  • hahah i feel you corey about hte autobiographies. I read beckhams a long time ago and the last line was. "I am going to play for Real Madrid now" lol

  • RealBlanco

Iker will be the official captain once Raul leaves.
As soon as Iker took over the captaincy of Spain,we all know what happened...Euro & WC...!!!
Hope Iker brings us the same luck & wins La Decima for us..!!!

    Adios & Gracias, Raul,Guti..!

  • Muna

Now Raul is gone. You know this is not only a new era for real madrid but for the whole of soccer. the previous generation is gone and the new one has come. look at it, players like maldini, figo, zidane, ronaldo, thierry henry, robbie fowler, dennis berkamp, david beckam, ronaldinho, rivaldo, and many others represented this past generation. Raul and guti were one of the few left. and just like corey said, there are a lot of boring interviews these days it, it's like everybody is too carefull with words. i hope it doesn't continue this way. viva raul, viva guti.

  • labomba

You voiced my feelings there Corey. I often shouted mamón in frustation at the screen, but would still be looking at the clock and counting the minutes left thinking when's Guti coming on, when's Guti coming on?
A genius as the clips show, (no clips of the anonymous Guti though) the NT was always his 'asignatura pendiente'

  • 22fan

rfef doesn't allow clubs to retire numbers, anyways. correct?

here's his interview after the conference to realmadridtv
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

translation available on the club's official site.

  • Raul's number will not be retired, nor should it be. Raul took the #7 from other greats like Santillana, so why would be not let someone else were the shirt and become great?

As for the maman comment, its completely justified. As much as I love the player, he was a wasted talent and derided, and rightly so, by man fans. A player that divisive will always have critics, but he invited criticism with his off field antics just as much as on the field. Then again, the modern game is lacking these types of characters. How boring are interviews now because players never say anything interesting? How dull is it to see player autobiographies out before players even retire? When have you seen a player second as a rock star at night? A maverick on and off the field.

  • Zizou

everyone post the best tribute vids you can find :)

  • Zizou

WOW this is the sadest day in terms of player retiring since Zidane in 06. The fact he was never a first in the starting 11 makes him even greater imo. Gona miss our blond midfielder.

Now i'm guessing Iker is no.1 captain, Ramos 2 and hopefully Higuain will get 3, and Alonso 4, although he hasn't been here long he'd be a good captain i think.

  • Real_7

Damn and it's official..our Captain is out too..wow what a sad ,sad day...it will be so different to watch them with out Raul and Guti....
i am feeling so fuckin down now even though it was expected...but the reality bites....
gracias Raul, gracias Guti...2 legends, hard to find like them

  • Real_7

to the master of Assists here is a video for all to see what we gonna miss:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
    farewell and thanks Guti
    p.s. feeling sad now

  • Ryan McManus

Oh, I have a question for all of you... do you all think we should retire Raul's jersey number (#7) once he leaves the club?

  • SpecialJames

Surely jamesmadrid is a troll. It's hard to imagine a Realmadrid fan talk like that. He shld be ignored or better still his posts removed. When we are all expressing sadness and goodwishes, only a fool says such. Andres knows how to deal with such, he's probably Yaat.

  • I just knew when I woke up this morning and read the news, that Corey would be swift with an article. I know how big of a guti fan he is. As well am I.

Only a true footballing mind can appreciate guti's genious. the vision, the passion. He's a dying breed of player. A tribute to the art of assists. He will be missed. HALA GUTI

  • Kaushik

Depressed to see such a legend not retire at the Club. Cant imagine when the Raul departure happens as to how hard that will be to sink in. New era indeed.

Hahaha farewell mamon, a little hard on Guti James

  • Ryan McManus

An absolute legend. Sure, he has his haters. But I see him as Real Madrid's Xavi.

  • jamesmadrid

The most stupid guy ever. Mostly hell be missed by his football but god what a million times he has fucked up a play in the midfield. Farewell mamon.

  • Begumguti

Fuck you!you can't tell this.guti was actually real madrid.he didn't fuck it up.and i think you dont know who you are insulting.you must be fired out of this site.

  • 22fan

very, very sad. i simply cannot imagine a real madrid without guti and raul. they're going to wear another club's shirt? just so weird.

good luck to them and hope they'll return to real madrid soon in new roles.

  • Amir

    :'(

I'm sad. He's an absolutely unique player, who, I believe, still had something to offer us. Last season he was still so important at times.

What I'm going to miss most of all is the way he sticks up for his teammates and his passion for Madrid.

If Raul leaves too, than I guess it will launch a new era for the club.

  • SpecialJames

Well what more can be said. We've exhausted all matters concerning Guti. I wish him the best in Turkey and that he's part of our coaching staff in the future. Adios... Do anyone know if they(Guti&Raul) would be sent forth by the club?

  • Muna

Not only did this guy pass like a machine, he also had swagger. we've just lost a legend. I've been watching his video highlights and honestly, i can't stop crying.
I'm really going to miss Guti.Haz.

  • Begumguti

You know,i love guti and if he left ,i would feel the same with you.what more can i say?i fell in love with guti.and i think you are too.
