Higuain Scores Again?!?

By: Corey | August 28th, 2008

Yes, Higuain scored for the second game running, and he got two goals, count them out now. One, Two! Oh, and we won back the Bernabeu Trophy, which is always nice. It was a goal fest last night in Madrid, with a 5-3 score line how the game finished. Sporting were a good rival for the game, playing some smart football and holding there own with us. Another game, another trophy seems to be the way the team is operating these days. Lets hope it stays that way come May!

MATCH REPORT

5 - Real Madrid: Dudek (Codina, 46′); Sergio Ramos (Torres, 46′), Pepe (Cannavaro, 46′), Metzelder (Javi García, 46′), Marcelo (Heinze, 77′); Gago (Diarra, 64′), Guti (De la Red, 46′), Van der Vaart; Robben (Drenthe, 46′), Raúl (Van Nistelrooy, 46′) & Higuaín.

3 - Sporting Portugal: Rui Patricio (Tiago, 46′); Pedro Silva (Abel, 46′), Caneira (Adrien, 76′), Polga, Ronny (Tonel, 46′); Pereirinha (Romagnoli, 60′), Veloso, Rochemback (Moutinho, 46′), Izmailov; Rodrigo Tiui (Yannick, 46′) & Hélder Postiga.

Goals: 1-0, 15′: Higuaín. 2-0, 19′: Robben. 3-0, 23′: Higuaín. 3-1, 31′: Izmailov. 4-1, 40′: Raúl. 5-1, 43′: Van der Vaart (Polga scores an own goal). 5-2, 74′: Yannick. 5-3, 90′: Veloso.

Referee: Velasco Carballo. Booked Cannavaro (89′), Polga (38′), Tonel (63′) & Adrien (87′).

As you could see, just about everybody played. Except Metz, Salgado and Sneijder who are carrying injuries. Canna made his glorious return to the white shirt with a second half display that was worthy of the captains armband. Nice to see, he will be vital for us this year. Its great to have Marcelo, Drenthe and Gago back too. And Higuain scoring is such a good sign, maybe wont need to splash the cash on another striker. No word on whether Saviola has been shipped out of Madrid yet, he is the Spanish version of Winston Bogarde, getting a fat check every two weeks to do nothing but train and sit on the bench occassionally.

So a good win, and now we must prepare for our first league match at Deportivo, where we have not won in 16 years or something. Should be an interesting one. But first, tomorrow, Friday, we have the Champions League group draw, which always gets people excited. Here it is:

Pot 1
Manchester United FC (ENG)
Chelsea FC (ENG)
Liverpool FC (ENG)
FC Barcelona (ESP)
Arsenal FC (ENG)
Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
FC Internazionale Milano (ITA)
Real Madrid CF (ESP)

Pot 2
FC Bayern München (GER)
PSV Eindhoven (NED)
Villarreal CF (ESP)
AS Roma (ITA)
FC Porto (POR)
Werder Bremen (GER)
Sporting Clube de Portugal (POR)
Juventus (ITA)

Pot 3
Olympique de Marseille (FRA)
FC Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS)
FC Steaua Bucureşti (ROU)
Panathinaikos FC (GRE)
FC Girondins de Bordeaux (FRA)
Celtic FC (SCO)
FC Basel 1893 (SUI)
Fenerbahçe SK (TUR)

Pot 4
FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
ACF Fiorentina (ITA)
Club Atlético de Madrid (ESP)
FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)
CFR 1907 Cluj (ROU)
Aalborg BK (DEN)
Anorthosis Famagusta FC (CYP)
FC BATE Borisov (BLR)

Its nice to see we avoid all the English teams right off the bat. Because I hate EPL teams in the CL. But if you look at the teams we could face, Bayern, Roma and Juve will hopefully not be in our group. Id settle for PSV or Porto. Sporting, Bremen and Vilarreal are the weakest teams of Pot 2, but we wont face Vilarreal obviously. Pot 3 is weak compared to Pot 2, but the French teams I would try to avoid as they have something to prove. Fener and Celtic would be sturn tests, and other then going east for some chilly visits to Romania or Russia, the rest of the teams all seem managable.

Pot 4 scares me a bit. I do not want to face Fiorentina. Sure Barca hammered then in pre-season and they have been out of the CL since they were demoted and were called Florentina, but still, they have alot of good players and a great coach. Shaktar is always a question mark, while we wont face Atletico. Here is what scares me. Any of FC Bate, Cluj or Aalborg could be an upset waiting to happen in the away leg. Remember the trouble we had against Rosenborg in Norway a few years back? Of course it would be a rape party in the Bernabeu, but we have to assume we will win our home games and look for a win, if not two, on the road.

All in all, we will probably face two strong teams this year. Bayern or Juve would be a disaster, so lets hope we avoid them and we should be just fine to qualify out of the group.

On a more somber note, Antonio Puerta passed a way a year ago. This was a very sad day in the Spanish football fans memory, as he was a cherished player, and a community symbol. We remember him as a not only a footballer with such great promise, but as a good man, a loving husband and a father. May you rest in peace Antonio. Further coverage here.

BATE rounds out the group. Looks like this is gonna be a labor this year. Barca have it so easy, assholes.

Yeah! The draw always favours them. But I’m glad in a way, if we do qualify we would have already played hard teams on the way to doing so and pre-quarters suddenly will not be an elevated level. I really hope we cross the jinxed pre-quarters.

PS I hate Juve, I would love to see Real cream them, esp at Turin.

Higuain continues to find goal - now if only he could find a descent hair cut. But seriously, although his mop might be hideous, his goals were PRETTY. Check it out:

(Warning: bad pop punk music with no relevence to the game.)

And we certainly got a tough group; I cringed a bit when I saw Juve, and a bit more when I saw Zenit. I’m with Kaushik though, it’d be sweet if we crushed Juventus.

Good to be back from Canada and see that Madrid played to our their potential in the 2nd leg of the Supercopa…and that the whites played well enough to win the Bernabeu trophy back. Besides Sneidjer’s injury, this preseason has actually gone quite well with the team stepping up its performance leading up to this weekend. If only we could close the transfer window with a decent striker signing and keeping Robinho. I seriously think he’s still going to end up staying…call me crazy. Yes, I’ve seen all the reports that Chelski is closer than ever, but I just don’t see this deal ever actually going down. I think Calderon and Schuster are still pretty keen on keeping him around.

Tough draw for the group stage, but I think the whites will handle it better this year knowing that they need to take the next step forward and regain prominence in European competition. I think Zenit will give us a challenge, but one that we can fully handle. Winning both legs against BATE is going to be a MUST. Splitting with Juve will be just fine, as I fully expect them to dominate any of these squads when they play at home. Not reaching the knockout stages after two straight league titles would be a colossal disappointment as the team has already proven it can dominate the domestic league. In my oh-so-humble opinion, I think we’ll reach the knockout round tied on points with Juve.

Hala Madrid this weekend, looking forward to a nice preview…

I’m really excited about this weekend - let’s see if los blancos can finally break the curse!

Has anyone else noticed how Van der Vaart has increased Madrid’s threat threefold by adding a dangerous and frequent outside shot threat. That kid can bang it home from distance, and it seems to be contageous. Van Nistelrooy forced a brilliant save against Valencia from outside the box, and Higuain’s second goal was a snipe. At times last year, it seemed that we could only score from directly in front of the goal mouth - let’s see if that changes this season. (And I’m not going to forget Sneijder, who was deadly from distance this summer, in orange at least!)

    Hala Madrid!

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I can’t help this one. The latest report on Robinho is that the deal went dud at the last moment (and after Chelsea started offering Robinho jerseys on its website). It sounds like Madrid will only settle with either 40 million euros, or 25 + Drogba. I’m not sure how I feel about the ladder. At the begining of the summer, I would have said hell no. But after Robinho/Ribiero’s shameful wheeling, dealing, whining and whacking each other off (”I want to be the best player in the world!” “You ARE the best player in the world! I love you!” “I love me too!”), I’m a lot less keen on keeping the nasty little kid, despite the fact that I think he’s one of the most talented members of our squad. What does everyone else think?

John, I think there is more to it than about just losing a player of like Robinho at the end of the close season. I think more than finding a replacement, Calderon is worried about the backlash that he might have to face. Every time he has gone looking for a player with his big mouth, he has been told to stay out. So, if he loses Robinho after this, people will start questioning his stature. Players leave Real only when the club wants them to leave.

CL Draw. It is very very scary. I’m very very worried about Zenit away, they’re a terrific team who play terrific passing football and are lightning quick. So, like James says we HAVE to win both legs against BATE.

VDV looks good for a double figure at the end of the season. Hopefully he should take some load off RVN. Joaquin? Another moody player? No thanks. If only Balboa had stayed!

its zenit that worries me.not juve.they won’t get newhere with the tinkerman at the helm and sissoko nd paulsen in d middle.got a double pivot but no playmaker apart frm camoranesi(who frankly is 1 i would have loved to see in d white shirt).zenit r gud.as losblancos said their passing nd movement is real gud.they should switch leagues.completely wasting themselves in russia.nd i hope that higuain is returning to his river plate days where he scored by d bucketload.he sure has hit a purple patch.
