Real battled Vilarreal to a hard fought 1-0 win and a valuable 3 points at the Bernabeu this afternoon, gaining ground on Sevilla to move up to third and casting an eye on Valencia in 2nd, only 1 point better. Of course our chances of catching Barcelona still look slim to none, as they played poorly against Mallorca but still found a way to win. Then again, Real played poorly for my tastes against Vilarreal and still found a way to win.

Playing poorly was almost to be expected though. Juande brings about a more disciplined, rigid formation and tactic approach to his team then Schuster did. I watched a old Clasico game, 1984, at the Camp Nou, where Bernd Schuster was in his prime for Barcelona and Butragueno and Sanchis were young pups, Sanchis actually making his debut. What I noticed, and you can call me crazy for this because its a pretty loose connection, was that Bernd did not really have a position on the field, which I guess was sort of the style in those days. He was a “libero” if you will, but in truth he just ran all over the place and got involved in everything.

Now having this mentality, this freedom of play, which I am sure most players would love, influenced his view on the game, and thus impacted his tactical setup of his teams. Did Real players have set positions? Well sure, but was their alot of floating around the field by the creative player? Oh yes. Was there a lack of a set play in one position every game? Yes, usually the right winger but sometimes the whole midfield. My point is that it became very clear why Schuster’s tactics were so confusing, it was because it was something only he could understand. Anyways, the game.

My overall impression is that Real lined up to win, they got a goal in the first half and they then kept things pretty tight. Lass and Gago were effective, and clearly bested Senna and Eguren, which was the key to the match really. This meant Vilarreal were not able to maintain possession comfortably, and they were on the back foot for most of the match. It must also be said that while Ramos and Heinze had good games, Pires and Cazorla were pretty useless out there. There was very little creativity from the Submarines, and you could see it was frustrating the team, with Rossi going in hard alot.

Robben was inspirational at times, but again, he looses the ball often and still has poor decision making in key moments. He waits, and waits and waits for something to open up, when he really should just pick the first pass he sees. His goal was great and his pace and tricks kept Capdevila from attacking much, while Angel did not attack much either even though he theoretically had no one to cover unless Robben was on his wing.

Sneijder played well enough, but I still dont think he is the type of creative “crack” that the team needs. Van der Vaart had that promise, but his brief cameo was subdued. Guti being out meant there was not much by way of balls to run on to, so we saw some hoofed balls to Hunter. He did alright, his control let him down a few times and he had a glorious chance to score that he couldnt convert. We will see better from him as he adapts to the team. Drenthe too fluffed a few chances he had, and its frustrating to know that he is the best option we have for a wide player, because if we are down a goal, he certainly is not gonna come on and provide us with one, either by a cross or a shot. Like I have said before, he is no Savio, Solari or Amavisca.

Raul was involved, but quiet and usual. Seeing him on the bench will become more common place of course, and he realized that. The game in 1984 I watched had Santillana on the bench, something I was surprised about until I realized he was on the down slope at that point. Higuain and Hunter could be a good combo, but until Hunter gets in to some sort of form, he should be left on the bench. We wont see much of Saviola anymore then!

Juande Post-Match:

“We could have scored another goal that would have given us more peace of mind. The team got tired in the second half. We had men out there who hadn’t played in quite a while and others coming off injury. The team worked hard but also suffered. We had plenty of chances to score more goals.”

“Our intention was to play as advances as possible, but in the last two matches our opponent was losing and forced us to move closer to our goal. It does however give us room to work with and seek the second goal.”

“Our most recent matches have been against direct rivals. We have two wins and one defeat in La Liga and a victory against Zenit in the Champions League. Our results have been good, but we need to continue working and improving. We have several days to train and prepare for forthcoming matches.”

“I think Lass and Huntelaar performed well. Lass only played an hour but asked to be subbed out because he hasn’t played in a while. Huntelaar put in an acceptable performance in the first half, but he was tired and hadn’t played in a long time either, which is why I tookk him out.”

“You have to play well to win. We want to win by playing well because it’s the best way to earn the victory. We weren’t able to score in the second half because we played worse than we did in the first half.”

Robben:

“I feel good and I am happy. We won because the team worked hard. It’s a new year and we started off the best way possible.”

“Not conceding any goals is important, but we also have to score. We had plenty of chances and would have felt better having scored more. 1-0 proved to be enought today, but we must improve.”

“We knew we had four tough matches, and after losing to Barcelona and Sevilla, we managed to win the last two. They were against the four best teams in the league, but now we must think about the future and win the remaining matches.”

“We have until late February to work hard, improve and play better.”

“Huntelaar is a good player, but it was hard for him because he was coming off an injury and he started in what was his first match. He was a little unlucky, but he had a great opportunity. I am sure he will score a lot of goals for Real Madrid in the future.”

Pepe:
“It was an interesting match. We played well in the first half and proved many things. We left too much open space in the second however. We have created many scoring chances since the Valencia match but have scored very little. The team did a great job and fought as a team.”

“I didn’t take any time off at Christmas. I was in La Coruña working with my physiotherapist Carlos Lalín. Things turned out well and it showed against Villarreal. The fact that we have a couple months during which we only play on weekends can help us.”

Fernando Gago:
“Lass and I were comfortable playing together. The coach told us what he wanted and we understood one another. We had to win. This victory gives us confidence heading into the rest of the month.”

“We played well, but the score could have been higher. Our forwards can score at any moment. This time it was Arjen Robben’s turn, but I’d also like to point out our defence’s strong performance.”

“We have to continue winning and not think about other teams. As long as we win we will continue pouring on the pressure.”

Donovan: we have to many first team players if you can believe that considering all of our injuries. You are allowed 25 players to be registered for the league, which when you think about it is two full teams, a third keeper and two extra players. Because we already had plenty of people, Ruud, Ruben De la Red and Diarra all lost their numbers as they are out for the season. There numbers were given to the new recruits. Any player that started the year with Castilla is given a number above 25, and they are eligible to play for both teas for up to 6 games in La Liga. After that, they have to be a full time squad member, no more Castilla or Real Madrid C duty, but they wont count against the 25 already registered. Hope that clears some things up for you.

Joachim- I think most people would agree that Barca are playing well and running away with the league. Unless they slip up in a big way, all looks lost. It will be a year of consolidation for Real, where they work out the kinks and prepare for next season I suppose. I also think the CL becomes priority number 1, along with keep hold of second place.

Thanks Corey! Our squad is really big and would be a huge problem at seasons end letting a few players go. Of course the obvious names spring to mind like Saviola and the current fringe players in the squad. We know who they are!!

I thought there was plenty to be encouraged about in Sunday’s game. It seems everyone, myself included, was satisfied with Lass’s debut, and the way he paired up with Gago. Interesting that Gago played the deep position for the most part, I thought that Diarra’s added defense would release Gago to play a more forward, distrubuting role. But it was Lass running forward more frequently.

It’s good to see how well Robben is performing on the right wing. Add versatility to his many talents. I’d sure be interested to see a 4-4-2 with Robben on the left and Palanca on the right. I wouldn’t want to see it too often, but it’d be an excellent surprise to come at the opposition from the wings, when for the past couple years we’ve been so concentrated on attacking through the center.

I’m also curious about how Lass would pair with Guti. Guti never played well with Diarra senior – I wonder if Lass’s added mobility would join well with Guti.

Lastly, clean sheets against the likes of Valencia and Villarreal are surely good signs of things to come. I’m excited to see how things develop this year. Hala Madrid!

Why r u guys keeping hold of Saviola? He so rarely gets playing time, and with huntleaar, raul, higuain, he is surely not gonna play again this season. But what pisses me off is that they insist that “Saviola is going nowhere”. Well, what gives? If u want to keep him, use him. Dont let him rot in Madrid, he has my years left in him, how can u be proud of urselves letting talented players rot in ur team? Which begs the question “Why in the fuck was saviola brought to Madrid?”

Saviola was brought to Madrid at a time when Higuain was conisdered the 4th striker and there was alot of doubt over his potential after his first half-season with Real. Also, Roberto Soldado was brought back from Osasuna but Schuster never fancied the player, so Saviola was signed on a free transfer to placate Schuster but also for Mijatovic to prove that he could spend little money on a “star” player, thus showcasing his skills in his position. To bad Saviola’s contract is out of control and he is by no means a star player, and in fact did he has not had a good season in a long time.

The reason he has not moved on is because of his contract. Real had received offers in the 10 million range a few times but they never stuck because Saviola refused to budge his contract. He makes something like 4 million dollars a year, which is pathetic considering his lowly squad status. He will be moved on, but it probably wont be until this summer.

“Why in the fuck was Saviola brought to Madrid?” Schuster wanted him. He thought he was better than Higuain and was also more finished. I think majority of the fans were against him coming.

It is interesting when you look at the positioning of Lass and Gago. I think Gago has gotten use to playing deeper, and even if he is with another defensive minded player, he will still sit pretty deep. Mamadou Diarra was raised at Lyon, so he is use to playing right in the center circle, as to say when in an offensive posture, he goes to the edge of the center circle and no further. Lass and Gago will move close to keep the lines tight, but Diarra prefers to stay closer to the defense because he does not have the pace to catch up. Diarra to me is the best defensive midfielder we have, but pairing him with Lass would be overkill in my eyes. Gago would be a better solution, and you never really can know with Guti. It will be interesting to see how that works out next year.

Corey’s right. At the time Saviola was brought in, Higuain’s talent was in question and there was (as there still is now) some question as to how much longer Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy would maintain their starting positions. Raul had spent a lot of time on the bench under Capello, and no one really expected him to have the impressive season that he did. So there was a lot of question as to who would win the role of striker, and Saviola was brought in to compete for it, and the fact that there was no transfer fee played no small part in the decision (we got him for free, if you don’t remember or weren’t paying much attention at the time).

While Saviola hasn’t been given as many chances as he would have liked, he has rarely been able to impress when his chances came, which was also the case when he was with Barcelona. Add Raul’s resurgence, Van Nistelrooy’s brilliance, and Higuain’s impressive improvement to that, and Saviola has simply been outperformed. However, when you are competing on so many fronts, depth is always important, and Madrid hasn’t received an offer worth giving him up (he’s still talented, and a quality back up). As Corey said, he will eventually move on, most likely this summer, but for now he’ll have to take what he can get at Madrid.

diarra + diarra would mean that we would need the galacticos sin beckham in front to make up for the loss in creativity. gago is on his way up in all sections. he already is good in defense and his passing is not bad either. i would have loved to see how a gago-de la red partnership fared but alas, that ain’t to be this season.

and saviola has the best job in the world. he gets millions for doing nothing.

Corey it’s interesting how your rate Mahamadou higher than Lassana because Diarra was averaging 4 recovered balls per game,(for a matter of fact Gago was averaging more recovered balls prior to this season) It was only late into last season after he had lost his spot to Gago and had his agent offer himself to Inter Milan did Diarra step up his game. He was very average before then.

Lassana, I rate very highly on the other hand, he was averaging just over 5 recovered balls per game, he’s very reliable and sits ahead of the back four. Mahamadou always struck me as a CM in the mold of Patrick Vieira and Sissoko of Juventus.
    —–
Interestingly enough, Ramon Calderon hid out in the President’s box in the Bernabeu, to avoid the Jeers from the fans/supporters and he also did not show up during the Valencia game claiming that he was ’sick’ or what ever… I think the pressure is getting to him.

As others realized, the first half was good and the second half was good enough. However, keeping the CL in mind in the coming months especially since at this moment that seems to be the only silverware we could probably get this year unless barca really slips, how will a performance like the second half stand in a game situation against Liverpool? Sometimes i’m just a worried supporter but ah, how possible is it?

yes, it’ll be quite interesting to see what happens when the squad’s in full recovery. someone’s going to have to go … (pleaseMarceloplease)

I really liked Lass’s first game, he played really well, and the only mistake he made was in the second half, when his pass to Ramos got intercepted inside our penalty box, but other than that he had a wonderful game…

As for The Hunter, he showed some flashes, he still isn’t 100% fit, but he’ll get there, it was his first game, so I’m not worried…

I wanted to see Palanca in the second half, but it still was a close game, so I think Juande played his cards right; didn’t see much from Raul, Gago’s been our most regular player this season, Pepe was very good, and Iker, hopefully this is the game he needed to get back to his old form

    Take care everybody, HALA MADRID

PS: It’s funny how the spanish press have made Juande’s decision for the CL spot a “competition” between Lass and Huntelaar

Alright gents, the tevez rumors are surfacing again and it looks like ManU is reluctant to offer him a big contract. We all know he’s a Madrid target, do we move now and risk paying too much? Or do we wait until summer? Thoughts everyone…

I think we oughta steal him if we’ve got the chance. ManU is keeping the door wide open (for good reason, they’re loaded at his position), should we take advantage?

Unfair to judge on one game, but I thought Lass looked brilliant in his debut.
Tevez would be great at Madrid – I think he’s a very hard worker, unpretentious and creative. My only concern is that again we will lack pace up front if he paired with any of the strike combinations we have. Not sure why Arshavin is not an option anymore.

My main worry about the game on Saturday (and from what i have seen from all the games under Ramos so far) was that up front we looked reliant on Robben to start everything. It’s the same squad formation that Capello suposedly got the sack for, for being too defensive. We could end up going back to the days where we were unable to create stuff up front – a problem we never had under Schuster.

Hello ladies and gents, apologies for being AWOL – went to Toronto and NYC for the holidays and just partied the whole time – no rest for the wicked. I haven’t been able to catch any highlights of the last match so I can’t comment on the debuts of Lass and Huntelaar.

However, being in England, I have quite a bit of opportunity to watch the likes of Lass and Tevez, and believe me, I think Tevez would be great for Madrid. He’s been overshadowed at Man U by CRon, Rooney, and now Berbatov, as well as Nani and Park to a lesser extent, but he was absolutely essential to West Ham staying in the Premier League 2 years ago. With the lack of any creative genius on the pitch for Real, I think Tevez would be a pretty sweet addition.

I also don’t think that the Huntelaar signing precludes signing either Tevez or Benzema – or possibly both. They’re different types of players anyway… Huntelaar and Benzema are poachers in the Ruud mold, and Tevez and Higuain are more like Raul or Rooney.

Both Ruud and Raul will have to take lesser roles in the coming years, simply due to their age and availability. Look at our situation now – better to have problems in team selection than to have no one to select. Eventually, i can imagine having Higuain, Huntelaar, Tevez/Benzema and one of the Castilla products as our main strike force.

Of course Tevez doesn’t seem to have great finishing skills.. he has barely played any games for ManU this season. That guy is great though, he just needs some time out on the field.

Whenever he is put on the field, he does some nice things, though. He scored a hat trick not too long ago.

I follow the Premier League only because thats the only thing they show on Fox Soccer Channel, so I have seen Tevez play. He is good enough for Real, but his price is a little alarming, considering we wouldnt be buying the players rights, only paying a shady firm for him to play for us. I dont view that as good business.

The other thing is that if you had to choose between Tevez and Benzema, why wouldnt you pick Benzema. I also follow Lyon extensively, they are my second team if you will, and I think he is the most promising player in the world right now. He may cost double what Tevez will, but the lad wants to play for Real, he has said so himself. And he is not just a poacher, actually he often creates goals for himself as he plays up top on his own. His poaching skills are not as developed as Raul or Ruud, but his pace and skill with dribbling and holding the ball up as well as (huge plus) drifting out wide from time to time means he is a very attractive prospect for Real. If Real was to sign only one player this summer, I would want it to be Benzema.

I agree with you Corey, Benzema over Tevez any day. It would cost alot but he will be worth every penny. Is there any news on that right winger that was promised by Pedja? I dont see us signing a quality player this winter transfer period thats not cup tied. I think we should just give Palanca a chance and maybe see how Parejo does on that wing until summer transfer window opens and then go full assualt on signing someone like Ribery.

I agree with Corey completely on this one, and for basically the same reasons.

    A. I’d prefer Benzema, and I do think spending loads of money on other strikers would get in the way of that transfer.

    B. The amount of money and the club that it goes to. For now, I’d prefer to let Man U get their funds from some other team.

And I’ll add C to the list – though Tevez has creative moments, and he’s a tremendous worker, he has the same tendency as Robben to dribble with his head down, severely limiting his play making capabilities. Yes, his drive is remarkable, but we need players that will open up play, not just pound head first into the box.

But still i too would prefer Benzema since we already have the hard working, decent pace and creativity but not so amazing finishing type of player in Higuain. There’s no one like Benzema in Real right now which means apart from a Right winger he should be a priority.

Hi guys, Happy New Year to all…

I’d prefer Benzema too over the Apache (great player though he is)… I’m not so sure how things will turn out next year too on the striker department if we bring in Benzema or Villa (as some are saying) in the summer: that will make us end up with Raul, Ruud, Higuain, Huntelaar + Benzema/Villa. I’ve already assumed that Saviola will be leaving this summer. Are we assuming that Ruud will never be the same again? Is the dressing room ready for Raul as a benchwarmer? Does Huntelaar become a 25m Euro White Elephant on the bench (if he manages to find his scoring boots, does that make him like Michael Owen)?

All this talk is on top of the questions over 2 Diarras, Guti, Parejo and possibly if Sneijder is put in the middle of the park (ditto for VDV) once Juande finds his winger. Which brings us to the player we REALLY need at the moment….

A winger too. Left sided or right-sided is ok for me since Robben is proving himself on the right side too (despite ball hog that he can be). But before we even get there, I’d like to see more appearances for Palanca as the substitute winger (instead of Drenthe)… But looking long term: is Ribery a good choice?

A French Connection in Madrid this summer of Benzema + Ribery sounds good to me… :)

I’m all for Ribery, even over Ronaldo. No, he probably won’t sell as many jerseys, but if we had Ribery AND Robben attacking from the wings, I can only imagine that would have defenses at sixes and sevens as they say, and leave things ripe for attacks from the midfield, where we already have so much talent.

Ribery over Ronaldo? Way more of a team player. Always shows up for big games. Couldn’t possibly cost as much as the gelled up Portuguese prince. Sold.
