Liverpool and that Fat Spanish Guy

By: Corey | December 19th, 2008

So we drew Liverpool in the Champions League, in what was a bizarre draw in my opinion. Take a look for yourself:

Ties to be played February 24/25 & March 10/11
Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atlético Madrid v FC Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v AS Roma
Internazionale v Manchester United

Vilarreal vs. Pana, Atletico vs. Porto? Give me a break. The two weakest teams in the competition get two of the teams with the least past experience at this stage? Tell me this wasnt fixed UEFA….

Good news is that we should see two Spanish teams progress for sure. Barcelona will be tested against Lyon for sure, people underestimate their abilities all the time, and even though I am a secondary fan of Lyon, I find that to be the best tie of the round.

Inter vs. Man U? I guess its a good tie, but wouldnt you want this a little later on? Oh well, it will clear the way for us I guess. Cant wait to see the pathetic press tidbits Mourniho and Whiskey Nose throw at each other to gain a “psychological” edge.

Chelsea vs. Juve will be so god damn boring I might just fall asleep during it, because I am sure the tards that work at ESPN will play it. But who knows, we may get to see Pool vs. Real.

Arsenal vs. Roma is interesting because its two teams that play good football but dont win consistently. I can see Arsenal winning this one as Roma dont exactly travel well when the destination is England.

And finally, Bayern will walk against Sporting, they cleaned up last year in the a group with them, and both have essentially the same team.

What Mijatovic had to say, even though we all dont care:

“We will go into the tie feeling confident. Up until now we have done well against English team and I think we are capable of doing well in the competition this season and there is plenty of time to prepare for these games,” he told the club’s official website.

“At this level there are no easy teams and if we want to go a long way then the more difficult the opposition the better.”

“Nobody reaches this stage of the competition without having great quality. Liverpool have been doing very well in recent seasons, unlike us, but I believe that the time has come to change that.”

“We have had a lot of bad luck with injuries in the past few months, but now things will improve and we will be able to have those players back and to add to the squad in January,” he added.

“I think the team can play two very good games and go through to the next round. We all want to do well and are excited by playing in the Champions League.

“Our players may lack some experience in this competition, but we should be optimistic.”

Fair enough. Liverpool is a good team, but only when you look in the context that they are ultra defensive and rely so heavily on Gerrard or Torres to score something out of nothing. I find Gerrard to be a quality player of course, but I have a feeling keeping him quiet in the Bernabeu wont be as difficult as many think. Especially if we do indeed sign Lassana Diarra.

Torres is an interesing case too. He does not have the best goal scoring record in the Bernabeu, and that must surely be on his mind. If Gerrard is his “strike” partner, then Pepe and Canna will have to be on their toes, but I am pretty sure that we wont see such an adventurous side in the first leg.

Their defense is fragile in an area that we do not have a player to take advantage of. Their left back situation is just decent, with Dossena an absolute flop and Fabio Aurelio is an adequate player, but in reality is one of many squad rotation players Benitez uses from time to time.
Right back is a little better, with former Castilla player Alvaro Arbeloa set for a return home. Philip Degen has not even played in the Premiership this season and is not a CL quality player, so Arbeloa is desperately needed to stay fit. We will need to attack the wings to beat them, but we will need a right winger to help Robben do that. Palanca will hopefully emerge as more of a talent by then, while it seems worth a shot to try Robben or Drenthe on the right in order to move Marcelo further forward. As long as we can get alot of width and quality crossing, we can beat Liverpool.

So what are your thoughts on the tie? Can we win this game or will we be victims of Liverpool’s CL tactic chess game where boring 1-0 wins are grinded out no matter what the situation? Let me know what you think?

P.S. No Valencia preview, we are having a blizzard here and I need to get outside and start shoveling and plowing.

Seriously,I hope all english sides get knocked out. I hate the British media, glorifying the EPL,while the best football is played in Spain and Italy.

I highly disagree about Higuain Julien, the argentinian scores 1 out of three tries the least, he’s quick, good on a one on one and has incredible precision, it would be a crime to rule him out. In anycase, Huntelaar will have to show his reputation and in any case it will be Raul or guti who are benched. The main issue is that guti and sneider play together, we sacrifice one wing in order to play to ball distributors next to a defensive midfielder. If we benched one ball handler, we could play with

    one defensive midfielder
    one attacking midfielder
    two wingers
    a second striker
    a striker

If we play with two ball distributors, we´’ll be obligated to hold possession and that’s no good when you don’t have a defined strategy as Real displays nowadays.

Julien G I see where you’re getting at but the only thing I disagree about is the point you made about pipita out of all of our strikers I’d play him first before anyone else because he has the ability to single handedly change a game at any moment and those are the type of players you need in your team if you wanna win a competition like the CL raul on the other hand cannot do anything by himself when the team isn’t playing raul won’t be able to do much neither would huntelaar

Two all those americans who were swearing why?? It’s a game of football not a life or death situation just calm down or you’ll blow a blood vesal!!!!

First off liverpool are the one english club who could well do a job on any team in europe because they’ve proved it time and time again. I’m a real fan so this is not a big up for liverpool, but we have to respect them as a team and as a club because they are a fantastic club. Gerrard has probably been the best CM player in world for about 3 years, remember gerrard can play more or less anywhere he’s very versitle. Mascherano is a brilliant player and so is xabi alonso.

From what i’ve seen liverpool can play in many formations which will make it harder for us because we won’t be sure how their going to be set up. Rafa benitez is a god in liverpool they love him and he is probably the best tactitian in european football. Any manager who can win the champions leauge with not that many good players deserves respect in my opinion!! We really should be worried about them because they seem to get better in the second half of the season and they will have torres back who would love to put us out, but i think it will be a good game with two of the really true greats in world football. I won’t bad mouth liverpool because we’ve never had any problem with them and plus there fans are great and very passionate.

People in liverpool don’t consider themselve english, they hate the english so we have one thing in common!! Lets not forget the battle of the goal keepers, spains number one and two who will make the better saves? I really can’t wait for the game. We must also watch out for albert riera too he seems to have settled in very well, i’m disappointed we didn’t get those scum bags manchester united i would have loved to put them out hahaha!

I wish liverpool luck and hope that we win of course!!

4 CL’s, Juande has always played with two wingers in his 4-4-2 system. He stands and dies by his ideas like Capello. I highly doubt he’ll change anything unless he doesn’t get the winger he requested for. His wingers are an important part of his attack, they provide width streching oppsition creating room in the midfield and holes in the back line for Guti to work and play his defense splitting passes. His wingers also give him the option of playing the ball into the box accross the face of goal providing opertunities for his strikers. Junade is a simple classic 4-4-2 coach that tries to maintain a certain degree of balance.

I see ‘creativity’ as an essentail part of evey midfield which Sneijder does not provide enough of. I’m not saying Juande will drop Sneijder but I think he’ll opt for either or, not both (ofcourse only if he gets that winger he requested for). I feel Guti is importatn he may see it the other way, or he’ll work with Sneijder and make him more of a winger, I don’t know. I have complete faith in Juande, he’s very exprinced and one of the best mangers in Spain, He knows what he is doing.

Andres, I love Higauin as much as the next guy, Infact he’s my favourite player but He’s still quite young and still developing. i personally, don’t think he’s ready yet. Yes, he’s our only crack on our team but when you look at his stats, he hasn’t scored one goal in the CL (he has struggled to make a real impact). Out of the 10 gaols he has scored this season 9 of them have come at home infront of the Bernabeu, his only away goal at the Vincente Calderon against Athletico. He averages 4 shots a game and out of the 4 shots he scores 1, he’s stil in a developing process, he’s not going to do much just yet. I think for know he’l be more helpful off the bench in the UCL.

Right now it’s a must to play with Raul, he’s the most experince and always brings his best in these types of games and he’s on form. If Hutelaar has not adjusted by the time the Liverpool game heads in and hasn’t proven to be a crack, I’ll go with Higauin instead… It’s still to early to decide but you never know how much he can imporve under Ramos in the next eight weeks.

Yes Andres, they’re dominating possession. But, we should be 2 or 3 goals up. We had the more clear cut chances, Robben has been a beast, he’s as good as anyone when he’s not injured. We should really be 2 up. Surprisingly, Canna and Metz re doing well. As usual, Joaquin is making progress against Marcelo :) .

One thing I noticed in our play is that, we don’t keep possession of the ball for long, we just make two, three quick passes. We rely on more on pace than slow buildup.

surely, there’re more goals in the game.

Ramos put Drenthe out of misery, and substituted him for Raul.

3 points, I think our boys played well, they missed many chances, but Robben was brilliant, he totally owned the right flank, and almost all of our chances came as a result of his pace, dribbling, and shooting, I’m happy we’re going into the winter break with a victory…

I’m sure some of you’ll be mad because Juande decided to give possesion away to valencia and have our team play on the counter, but I think he’s just figuring out the team…

take care everybody, have a nice weekend

not too shabby match, my friends.
Although we did not capitalize on some of our opportunities, 3 points is probably the best gift of all.

Yeah, he sold it beautifully, don’t you just love it??? Oh, but I guess that barza players never try to fool the ref, they’re just so tough and honorable that they would never do something like that…

Robben as our best player, the game at the Crap Nou would’ve a whole other story if we’d had him; I also liked Guti (for once, he lived up to his quality), Gago, Michel, and Iker

VDV had a couple of nice plays (that shot that struck the post would’ve been a cracker!!!), Higuain scored the goal, but he missed lots of chances, Marcelo, was terrible, Drenthe was a non factor, Raul the same, Canna and Metzelder were all right, Palanca ( I love this kid!!!) didn’t do much, but still, he showed he’s a tough dude…

I liked the game a lot, lots of chances for each team, it was very entertaining

I can see the Valencia forum already: “ref helps madrid win the match” or something like that

Valencia played on the edge, Marchena should’ve been sent off earlier, when he clotheslined Michel ala Hulkster!!!; Villa was awesome, sad we couldn’t sign him during the summer (thanks Pedja!!!), Mata too (thanks Florentino!!!), and that’s all I have to say about Valencia

    Take care guys

Well, it seems like we’ve finally signed Lassana Diarra at a pretty expensive cost near 20 million euros. Im hoping he brings back the glory days when Makelele was around. He seems to be a better ball player than Mahamadou Diarra, who is primarily a destroyer, and maybe the ones at the top are hoping that a player like him will mean we control games better. Dunno, but this will probably mean Real will hope that the likes of Inter and Man City come in for Mahamadou next season.

regarding palanca’s ‘white’ blood, so far we’ve seen four skull injuries this season, how chivalrous lol nobody deny los huevos the team exerts. Its those frontpage headliners with our blood stained captain celebrating a goal that makes us feel pride.
