Lots of Promise, Not Much Substance

By: Corey | December 21st, 2008

There was a whole lot of huffing and puffing these evening at the Bernabeu, but Real didnt blow any houses down with a so-so performance. We saw an entertaining, end-to-end game with lots of pretty ball movement and individual dribbles, but the goals were lacking, not for lack of trying. The chances were there for both teams, but some supremely poor finishing would plague the match, with Higuain and Robben both incredibly wasteful, while David Villa and Manuel Fernandes both had a few decent chances that they could do much of. I dont know which was a bigger miss. Villa all alone at the back post with the goal wide open and he blazes over or Higuain chesting a great Guti corner down in the box then with the goal gapping, putting the ball onto the bar.

There was alot to like from the match though. Guti was in great form, putting the ball on the money just about everytime and Drenthe, Robben and Higuain all running in to open space to create chances. Guti also had some moves to make in midfield which he pulled off, as was unusual because alot of time he would loose possession from being a step behind when performing a pull-back and getting stripped. His central midfield partner Gago was terrific as well, performing his defensive duties well and with some quick and precise distribution. We may loose a little now that he cant move as far forward as he may like under Juande, but defensively we gain so much more. A+ for the central midfield today, they showed Albelda, Baraja and Fernandes a clean pair of boots all game.

The defensive partnership was solid too, dealing with a mobile and skilled Villa very well. He had a few chances, which is to be expected of a player of his quality. I was pleased with Canna in particular, who was snapping at the heels of Villa constantly. Considering the somewhat defensive approach of Valencia, Real’s two center backs really only had to watch after Villa, which they did pretty well. Metzelder could have stepped forward a few more time to cut down the angle on the pot shots the central midfielders were getting, but then again it kept a quick through ball out of their minds.

Salgado again was very good, moving foward pretty well and more importantly, forcing Mata inside more then Mata was suppose to be. The one dangerous run that Mata had was when he recieved a ball in midfield, and moved centrally, evading Salgado’s shackles. Ive been very pleased with Salgado as of late. Marcelo on the other hand was dreadful. If it wasnt for Van der Vaart and Drenthe being such utter rubbish I would say Marcelo was our worst player on the pitch. Joaquin tore him apart time after time, something that the Joaquin of 2002 was capable of everyday, but the Joaquin of 2008 only does in short fits. Marcelo needs a loan to work the kinks out. Otherwise sell him, he does not have the defensive know how, and I fear he will never learn it.

Casillas was good too. If Casillas was not playing well, its pretty clear the air in the team was stale and Schuster had to go. A number of useful saves, and one of pure class proves the Barca game was no fluke, he is back to somewhere near his best.

Robben was a terror, but also frustrating useless at times. His selfishness was anooying, his futility in the final ball agonizing. I delighted at his runs, but I gasped with horror at his decision making at the end of those runs. He created numerous chances, but he also spurned several. I dont know. Its easy to say he was man of the match tonight sure, but I dont think im nit-picking when I say that it was not a very efficient performance. More quality with the final ball and more importantly better decision making will definately see him become one of the best in the world. He is just as talented as Messi and Ronaldo with the ball, but he neither scores not assists as frequently as them yet.

Drenthe was awful. I know Steve likes him, but either they put him at left back where he might have a chance at being a decent player or he needs to be sold. Other then pace he has nothing to offer the team. Van der Vaart was pretty bad too. Besides hitting the post when he probably should have scored, he had a wimper of an impact on the team. Of course when he was withdrawn it effected the teams ball retention, but I need more then his ability to play a few horizontal balls from such a supremely gifted playmaker. Playing in his natural position, he really didnt show much of what he was capable of doing there, his form is troublesome and will require some time on the bench. He was overshadowed by Guti the whole match, but in his defense he did get injured, a hamstring pull, which negated the little promise he showed early on.

Guti was terrific. Maybe Im bias, but I think he is one of the best passers of the ball in the world. His through balls provided oppurtunities for Robben and Higuain, and often when Van der Vaart should have been playing a ball, Guti had already played it. Lets hope this form continues, because Sneijder gets injured so often and VDV is just out of it at the moment.

Another impressive display from Miguel Palanca followed up his stellar debut in El Clasico. He had some good touches, but he was getting knicked all over the field, something that I thought Valencia did alot. His spurting blood episode where he was intentionally albowed by Albiol made me just as sick as when Marchena choke slammed Salgado to the ground on a corner kick. Football is full of dirty tactics and such, but Valencia took it to far. Del Horno, Albiol and Marchena all could have been sent off before Marchena finally was, albeit a dodgey call. Robben did dive, but Marchena had his arm out which he didnt need to do, and he was skating on thin ice anyways. He had several oppurtunities to see red, the ref just picked the least flagrant foul for him to see red. Palanca had this to say about it:

“I got hit and I still don’t understand how he didn’t get sent off. It hurt a lot…”

“They continued to foul me and wanted to throw me out of the game.”

“Playing in the Bernabeu has been a dream. Now I am going to enjoy some healthy fiestas with my family, because this victory leaves a good flavour in my mouth for the end of the year.”

Well toughen up buddy. You did get kicked alot but dont be a whiner like Messi.

Higuain played well today, except for that whole thing about scoring goals. How he was able to put enough power and bend behind the ball to score is beyond me, that looked like a one and a million strike. An extremely difficult technique that he pulled off. But then he proceded to blow every other chance that came his way, including a sitter off a Guti corner. I have said this before, I will say it again. He cant hit the broad side of a barn sometimes, and he showed that again here. He has improved so much this year, but this game was more reminiscint of two years ago or last year where he fluffed 9 out of 10. Lets hope he doestn revert back to that and this was just one of those days.

Raul was working hard, but was kind of invisble. Sound familiar? Torres came on to and did his job, keeping Joaquin quiter then Marcelo did. A 1-0 win against a title contender, we should be pleased with it. If we had won 4-0 like we should have I may have been more content, but I saw alot I liked and very little I didnt from Real today so lets hope the improvement continues after the holidays.

Juande’s Astute Recap of the Match:

“There’s been few goals for the large number of chances both teams had. What’s important is that we took the three points. That’s what we wanted. We would’ve liked to score more goals.”

“It’s been a very tough match and our strength ran out. We wanted to reach Valencia´s goal as quickly as possible in counterattacks in order to surprise them, but our indecision made us make mistakes and we failed to net a second goal. I nevertheless think that the players’ will to score was obvious.”

“Referees have to do a very difficul job, especially in games like these. They make the decisions they feel they must make. I respect them regardless of what I think. I don’t like to comment.”

“The team looked nervous in the latter stages of the match because the squad felt much responsibility given that we already had the three points. We believed a 2-0 result would have secured our victory, so we couldn’t afford to give Valencia any room to play in. The loss of the thre points would have been a very hard blow. We had to defend ourselves as best we could during their attacks. My men didn’t know if to try to score another goal or focus on keeping the 1-0 result. We were in Valencia´s hands because a goal from them would have rendered all our efforts redundant.”

“I liked how we covered every position in the first half. We had to make some changes because Valencia were capitalising on their superiority in midfield; we only had Guti and Gago there. That’s why we sacrificed one of the wings and I think it was a good decision. We would have fiinshed the game off with another goal, but it didn’t happen.”

“Robben’s characteristics allow him to enjoy himself with the ball more than the rest. He is an individualist skilled in one-on-ones. We must give him liberty in order to enjoy his style. It’s logical that teams try to stop players like him, Messi and Silva with fouls.”

“I replaced Marcelo to avoid him being sent off with a double booking. I didn’t want to find myself in a situation in which I wouldn’t be able to count on him or in which I was left with only ten men on the pitch.”

Gago
“I think the final score was short. We deserved much more. This victory is good for us because it allows us to get used to winning again, something which is innate to Real Madrid.”

“The most difficult situations come when an opponent has chances on goal and capitalises on them. We failed to score from ours, but we won. Every game is tough, but the important thing is that we won and that we finished the year with a victory.”

“We have to rest now and spend these special holidays with our families in order to return to work with excitement. We will do much better next year and play as well as a Real Madrid side should.”

Higuaín
“This victory allows us to leave a good impression before Christmas. I am very happy with the team’s attitude because we all fought hard throughout the match.”

“It was very important to win tonight and that’s why the team was so motivated from the start. We failed to score more goals but we took the three points. That was our primary goal. It was a shame not to have made better use of our chances”

“We have to rest and spend time with our families in order to return with our batteries charged and be ready to face the rest of the season.”

Its true he handles the ball. He even got carded for it when he tried it in the copa del rey against villareal last year. He is Argentinian so no shock there.

lol but the spitting at the malaga player story? Wow… the “spitting incident” was published by MARCA of all newspapers…….they didnt even stop to think he might have been spitting out the water from all the water-logged pitch and rain fall that went into his mouth when he fell.

The picture they used as evidence was even more pathetic. He is not even aiming at the player!

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_B1JtfOpd85I/SQ8Hy4pzwrI/AAAAAAAAFY8/f02eB58RN8Q/s1600-h/0+messi+barcelona.jpg

Either I am really bad at angles, or messi has really bad aim, or messi was trying some vodoo spit across the players path to curse his luck kinda like how a black cat crosses your path and your luck is believed to be cursed………I am not too sure but what I am positive about is that it was MARCA who came up with this story. They had to direct attention away from Madrid’s horrible start to the season and that was their hook.

I am a barca fan but I definitely dont think Messi is an angel. He is a devious bastard. His goals from quick free kicks against atletico madrid and sporting lisbon is proof

Does anybody believe Marca or AS make up the news? This isn’t even about a tabloid or not, its about understanding the grounds of journalism.

1-You can imply but not denounce without evidence
2-Journalist have a right to express their opinions.

Nobody wrote that the kid complained, it was clear from the beginning that it was his colleagues that spoke in his defense. It rather seems the usual cule excuse denouncing the spanish tabloids, when their local ones do the same….more predictable than a cule talking about franco.

    Aaron,

I think he cost the team around 19 mill euros, too much for a player like him, if you ask me

Corey, great article, I also agree with Andres, VDV was playing ok, it wasn’t his faul he wasn’t getting the ball, or that robben didn’t lift his head to give him the ball on two occasions, when Rafael was in front of goal…, I also agree woth you on Robben, he’s electrifying, but he needs to be a better teammate, and pass the ball to those in a better position

I’m also glad that you agree with me on Acci-drenthe (great nick btw), he’s awful, we could sign usain bolt and make him do what royston does, wich is only run as fast as you can…, we have to get rid of him, or convert him into a LB, because is Marcelo is utterly worthless…

As for the Messi part, I have to agree with tue cules here, he hasn’t whined or anything, I’M SURE HE WHINES TO THE REFS, but he’s not the type to go out and cry on the newspapers, ala Eto’o…

Take care everybody, HAVE A MERRY XMAS!!!

LOL, touche Cesar. Of course, Robben is an absolute angel who never whines or, God forbid, dive to provoke a red card :) . Agreed with Braapaap, Messi IS a devious little bastard who takes quick free kicks that border on cheating and is a master of the subtle hand ball…he’s just not a pouting whiny one as some have suddenly begun to portray him.

Good point on VDV. Note how it took 2 games for Juande to slot him into his old Hamburg position whereas Schuster didn’t do it even once that I recall.

Merry Xmas to the Merengues. The rivalry resumes next year.

juande comes back from the epl and suddenly real madrid is being linked with one and all. first ashley young, then even roman pavlyuchenko, and now its valencia. man , goal.com and tribalfootball.com have some pretty good fiction. we need a rightwinger but these won’t cut it at the white house.
with the promise palanca has shown, i think he should be given a chance. we have a very very high quality cantera and i think ramos is gonna them a lot of chances. although i am still sore at the loss of gerardo bruna to liverpool. the scousers got a hot one there.

    Hector,

thanks for the comment, the thing is, ALMOST ALL FOOTBALLERS ARE WHINERS ON THE PITCH, especiallly the most talented ones, the ones who hold on the ball most of the time, but that’s just part of the game, one that I don’t like…

I remember when Figo was with us, when he got fouled and he didn’t get the call, he would just sit there, complaining and whining, and I can’t recount how many times that put the team on a bad situation; it’s the same with Guti, even though talented as he is, I just hate that part of his game…

I think that Robben was showing much better decisions by the end of the game. He would push the ball to the back line and then slot it back to an open man (Higuain usually) who would then sky it into the stands. It’s funny how Higuain scores the impossible shots, then misses the sitters. His goal was left footed!

I don’t think Messi is a whiner, but it really doesn’t matter one way or another. It’s funny that fans get so defensive about a player’s personality, when we all know that it’s his contribution to the game that matters. Whatever.

I really don’t appreciate or a agree with braapaap’s analysis of the game, but I did notice Iker’s propensity, especially in the first half, to just blast goal kicks as hard as he could. It really crippled our own midfield, sending them chasing forward and then having to back peddle when Valencia inevitably won possession. In the second half Gago and Guti were given more control, and the game completely changed.

Is it time we start posting on the Barcelona site and try to tarnish any small joys they’re celebrating, and break up their discussions with inflammatory comments? Nah, we have more class than that, Heh heh.

I was pointing out the similarities in tactics not skill. Madrid had a very direct approach to the game, which I find very similar to the English league or any team that says “we have the ball now, lets attack!”. It just didnt seem the Spanish way. Either that or Madrid relied on the defend and counter to catch the valencia defence offguard but that would be preposterous cause they didnt park the bus at all. It was as if they applied the American football ideology of “the ball is only supposed to move forward, not backwards or the side” to their offensive strategy.

lol my apologies if I offended you with my inflammatory comments and analysis…Just sharing an on-topic point of view that was not meant to be an insult. If anything that epl/school comparison was done for english league fans who think their league is amazing tactically….and the fact that I hate the english league

Then again you would assume my every comment here is an insult since I support a rival club so whatever its all good.

There was a few questions asked yesterday about the recent signing that president Calderon had made, and I would like to hear what you guys think about it…

One question was, does it seem as if the signing that are being made are to divert the fans/partners attention from the work that was done last summer?

And the second question was, would it be better to hold off the signings for this winter and have the cantera help so we can look towards a strong project for this summer?

A few points that were made were:
    - the signings were necessary due to the long term injuries that occurred this season.
    - the signings that were made (Lassana and Huntelaar) were made as substitutes to Diarra and v.Nistelrooy. But then, wasn’t Javi Garcia and Saviola signed as alternatives to fill those positions?
    - It’s quite obvious that Saviola and Javi Garcia serve for nothing but merely squad fillers.

    - Madrid has spent over 290 million euros over the past three year which is an overwhelming amount, and none of these players that were signed appear to be between the top 1 – 10 players in the world in there positions, respectably.
    - the club should be striving for the best in the world and excellence, the mediocrity in the sqaud is astonishing.
    - No Benzema, no Cristiano Ronaldo, no Messi, no Aguero, not even any Xabi Alonso, Cesc or Villa. Madrid is beginning to seem very unattractive. we’re unable so sign anyone.

    - We have just went out and spent 19 million euros on Diarra, who hasn’t proven anything europe and has only played 40 games in the last 3 three and a half year and has gone from Chelsea to Arsenal and finally Portsmouth in order to find regular playing time.
    - We have also went out and spent 20 + 7 million euros on Huntelaar who hasn’t proven anything in the UCL and isn’t proven in the top leagues (a risky purchase).
    - the prices that these players came for are outrageously over priced.

    What do you guys think?

If I post inflammatory things, I get more discussion. I guess I should do more stream on consciousness type writing so all of the controversial things I think get expressed.

One thing. The high transfer fees are because clubs know Real has alot of money and an afford to pay over the odds. This is true for any big club. There is a great deal of price gauging that goes on when big clubs come in for players at smaller clubs. Its distasteful sure, but its almost necessary and it does help keep things a little less top heavy. Consider 10 million of Diarra’s fee as Christmas charity to Portsmouth, and 20 million of Hunter’s fee as charity to Ajax.

    Julien,

    1. I agree with you that the signings are necessary because of all the injuries, but that’s a result of the bad planning and working relatonships between Schuster (since he started the year as coach), Mijatovic, Calderon, Portugal, etc.

    2. This management is not going to put all their hopes on the current team and La cantera, because Calderon and Mijatovic are under constant pressure and are being challenged from all angles, from within the club, and outside (Florentino anyone?),so they need results for this season, in order for them to save face and impede an electoral process next year. Calderon’s reign has been controversial from the get go, he doesn’t help his cause with all his stupid comments and empty promises…

3.Our inability to sign top talent (the ronaldos, agueros, messis, villas) are du to two factors: a) the incompetence of our president and sporting director, and b) the lack of continuity, be it at management, or at the coaching positions, and that makes it very hard for players to come to our club

That’s all for now, I’ll be waiting for yor comments

Any player dreams of playing for Real-unless he’s a cule fan-but all transfers need to be carefully studied. Its not that players dont want to come to Real, only that our managers are knocking on other clubs’ windows the night before the transfer deadline is over. Kaka was a different story, he was at a very successfull club-in my opinion the second most chivalrous name in football- and it makes sense he didnt leave. CR was a difficult and dirty approach but its still in the air, the kid continues to avoid talking about his future and simply responds “im happy here right now”. Villa, cazorla etc were called the very night before the transfer window closed and you cannot blame their respective clubs for not selling. What Valencia be without Villa and especially without any margin to sign someone else. Its these examples that haters will change inside out by mentioning the players didnt want to come.

All this bad signing run is due to bad planning, not that players are not lured by the Real jersey. Remember CR’s words regarding moving to Real over the summer and Benzema’s as well, now its up to pedja to do his job well.

No reason to worry, history always places us in our inhereted position, number one. La Saeta Rubia gave us 5 and we recently won 3 in less than a decade. We’ll be the first club to conquer the 10th CL, within a year or two.

1/ The planning was horrid on Mijatovic’s part, he failed to see the weaknesses in the squad and he simply ignored the holes that the squad had. I don’t understand why Javi Garica was brought in as a squad filler instead of Garay, and why we decided to bring back De la Red to save 8 million euros when we could have purchased long time target Xabi Alonso. He would have completed our midfield. and also this ridiculous waiting game Mijatovic played with Cristiano where very little negotiations took place. Only one offer was made to Man Utd!

Some blame also has to be put on Schuster because he never had a clear plan of what he wanted to start with. He new he needed a box-to-box center midfielder for his system (he’s a 4-4-2 coach and has always played that way until last year), yet he decided to as for an attacking midfielder in van der Vaart. For me it looked like ha just wanted to sign Dutch plater and no real star came in.

2/ But spending truck loads of money doesn’t help his champagne either, there’s even rumors going around that the club is in debt, with confermation from Calderon himself that we we have the lowest net profit in quite sometime. Calderon is using the ultras to his advantage but his only real completion out there is Florentino. If he wasn’t to be re elected he’s going to have to purchase at least one ‘crack’ this summer. The out come of this season will be important…

3/ I agree with that one, also our recent failure in Europe, we have no stars and where struggling to attract big names. Benzema would be a good start to restructuring the team and attracting players. No one is willing to quite the team in order to come play for us which says a lot about where we currently stand. We squad also needs stability from an experienced manager and successful manager. I can help but think Juande is the right choice for the job… all these changes in player and coaches aren’t really good for the young players in the long run.

I dont care about signing stars, i just want good players. We can all agree that there are more then a few average players on this team right now. Even if they are just squad players, when they have been called on they have been lacking. Someone like Santiago Solari reminds me of the day when we had role players who were excellent when they were needed, but they never complained about not being starters. We should look into getting players like that. We have all the top players we need, the supporting cast isnt there and thats where the wholes in the squad are.

Corey, I agree with that, Savio was one of my favourite players along with Solari but we need at least one (reliable) extraordinary player, if we want to win the CL some one to deliever use in late into the competion when we’re in need of a victory.

Also I’m not to sure about having all the top players we need. We have good squad players but don’t we’re nearly as good as we were 10 years ago when we won our 7th, with Raul, Roberto Carlos, Hierro, Redondo, and Seedorf all being stars or ‘cracks’. Thats the difference between know and then.

9 CLs, I do agree with you but It must be said that players don’t have he same desire to play for us as they had before.

You have a point about Kaka but take into consideration our purchase of Zidane, he had just made the UCL final with Juventus and lost to us (he had made it to the final three times without an success) but he still went out of his way and betrayed Juventus and signed for us.

Kaka openly declared that he is favourite club as a child was Madrid yet he wasn’t willing to depart. Similar situation with Crsitiano, he wasn’t willing to force his way out. Some of this blame can be pointed to Mijatovic and his poor action plan but this also has to do with our recent failure in the European completion as well.

Michael Ballack and Cesc were target a summer ago along with Chivu. In the summer of 2004 all these players would die to play for our club, there would be no way these guys would reject us for a pay hike. Both Chivu and Ballack rejected us because we wouldn’t offer them more money. Cecs rejected us not becasue Wenger is his ‘father’ or because he from Barcelona. He rejected us becasue he’s ambitions and he was likely to get farther in the UCL with Arsenal.

It’s even more funny because Robinho was willing to force his way out to Chelsea who have less prestige than us, because of money and maybe a chance at the UCL. Haha, But he got fucked over anyways.

The bad planning and poor signings is fucking us over, but maybe if we are able to knock out Liverpool and Sign Benzema we’ll restore some credibility to our name and it can only be up from there.

Benzema already has mentioned his preference for madrid twice this week. It looks like its up the the management if they are willing to bid high, it won’t be any lower than 35 million..the least. The CR…we’ll see, the whole saga last summer didnt have a clear ending, its been leaked many times that the portuguese made a verbal agreement with sir A to play for one more season and perhaps depart. But i wonder if he’d be ideal for madrid, he needs to be at his peak and all that silverware on him just doesn’t make him look any better.

If Calderon and Pedja do their job right, Real can sign anyone but they’re summer approach has left them against the ropes, they’ll have to battle hard this summer in order to stay in office.
