No Sporting Preview
By: Corey | February 12th, 2009
Sorry everyone, but I dont have time to put up a preview for this weekends match. I will be away from the blog for about a week, as I am leaving for LA on Saturday morning and wont be around my mac much to write posts. I was planning on doing the post today, but I just got rejected from Boston University for my MBA, so I am in an awful mood and I have a bunch of stuff to do for school before I leave. I apologize, and I will return next weekend with a match preview for the Real Betis game and then a few days later for the big clash with Liverpool. Steve will hopefully have a liveblog for the game, but if not, go ahead and comment on the game here. I will see you all in a week! HALA MADRID!!!

Robben is not seriously injured. It was more of precaution taken, what with the important game against Liverpool coming up. Most of the dutch players was rested by Juande because of the international games that took place. So we dont have to worry that Robben is injured. Im positive he will feature in the Betis game this weekend.

Juande is one tactically intelligent individual. He has so much faith in Marcelo it’s absurd. A few weeks ago I definitely wouldn’t have considered Marcelo in that position but everyone’s right. As the weeks go by he truly improves. This is really good for him & for his spot on the Canarinha. Sunday’s match was truly historical & a shocker. Great day for Juande.

To all concerned: I did not write the comment about shutting off comments. I was in Disneyland when it was posted. Whoever posted it, and I know by IP address, will be permanently expelled when I speak to Daryl after my vacation. This kind of action will not be tolerated! I have removed the bogus comments and will not be turning comments off. I would however like all those who regularly come here to try their best to not antagonize the people who come here to be pests. I am annoyed by it just as much as you are, but we must do our best to ignore it.
Other then that, great comments everyone, seems like it was the one game of the year I didnt want to miss! Im having a good time on vacation, but I am itching to get back to writing. Also, I have a new blog for the Football Manager offside that I will start up next week. Kept commentating away guys! Hala Madrid!

Great – business as usual.
So DRENTHE…..I’d personally like to resume by suggesting to people to give Drenthe a bit of slack, he seems to need it right now and I’ve noticed he gets quite a bad rap on this forum.
OK lets be frank, being a footballer is not the hardest job in the world, it’s incredibly well paid, they are living the dream and should be grateful for the chance; even if that means having to put up with impatient fans.
We buy the shirts, pay the ticket prices and have the right to critic the players – even if we are wrong.
BUT I do think the Bernabeu is one of the toughest crowds to please, they have been known to turn on the players in a poor home game, and personally I wish that didn’t happen sometimes.Clearly Drenthe seems to have been badly effected by the whistles he got a couple of games ago, and he does strike me as quite an immature 20 year old compared to the likes of Higuain and Gago (he’s got great character and sense of humor though). Personally, I think they were directed mostly at Ramos for taking Raul off so close to his goal record.
But it also won’t help Drenthe to know that Marcelo has been so good this last game.
Personally, I’d like to give Drenthe my vote of confidence, I’m sure he will be a great player one day and I’d like that to be at Madrid if possible.
I think he could really offer something different, besides he’s more direct than Marcelo.Disagreements and other comments welcome – do you guys think he’s been dealt with harshly?

all right, corey!!!… welcome back…:D
Evo,
drenthe has my vote of confidence too.. perhaps the whistling did affect his performances..Posted from

yipppeeee!!!!!the real corey stands up.man , i am relieved. whatever hijo de puta put those comments on deserves to be drawn, hung, quartered, impaled and then burnt on a stake.okay, thats a bit much, treatment reserved for mijatobitch.but still, there shall be blood.
way to go,andres. you caught out the imposter.usted tambien, cesar.maybe marcelo is gonna find his true niche under juande.up on the left wing, those huge defensive shortcomings are not punished much. or maybe it was just playing against a weak team. if he puts in more performances like that, very well but if its one off performances, he won’t make the cut.
about drenthe, the whistles aren’t completely undeserved and there are other factors in play too. although the bernabeu crowd doesn’t hesitate to let fly if they think that the players aren’t playing real madrid like, those players who are seen to be giving it all for the shirt are embraced whole-heartedly.take sergio ramos.not one of ours originally but the effort he puts in and the pride has caused complete adoption. drenthe still hasn’t started playing up to madrid standards despite being with us for one and a half seasons. and to put the icing on the cake,he is stamped as a predrag mijatovic signing.truly put the fat into the fire. if drenthe starts playing well, the whistles will disappear.

Evo,
I agree with you in that Drenthe might become a very good player, the problem with him is that he’s grown accostumed to playing as a winger, up front, but IMHO I think he would be a terrific left back, he has pace, strength, has a cannon for a left foot, he would be relentless in the back…
Another problem he has, is his thin skin; man, this is Real Madrid, and if he didn’t know what he was getting in to, well, that’s something his agent should’ve known in advance…; I for one think that he’s not vital to our team’s success at the moment, only if the coaching staff convinces him to become a LB, then he’ll leave a mark on this team…
Take care everybody

I personally feel that Drenthe has come in for some unfair treatment. The fact is that he doesnt really get too many minutes and only comes on in the last 20 when the game is pretty much over. And when you’re a young player, you need both time on the field and patience. Take as an example Higuain. Even after one and a half seasons, he was pretty much just an impact player coming on towards the end. Only the likes of Raul and Ruud getting injured this year has meant that he has gotten minutes and with greater confidence has had a significant impact on the team.
I think what Drenthe needs is a loan spell where he can work out the kinks in his game. An year at a low profile club might do wonders to both his confidence and ability.Posted from

Cesar, Drenthe was signed as an attacking leftback, just as he showed at the 2007 U20 World Championships for Holland. He was really on fire at that tourney, but has only shown his abilities in fits and spurts. I’m doubtful that he’ll end up being anything more than a serviceable leftback. I think his future is further up the wing. Spot on regarding his thin skin though.

And in case you didn’t know, the FCB Offside got one poster posting as one of us this weekend as well. If I had seen this thread at the same time, I might have been more vigilant about IP addresses and whatnot.
Didn’t sound like the Corey I “know”…

Actually, during the U-21 tournament Drenthe played as a wingback initially before being pushed upfield to play as a winger. I guess if we try to have him as a LWB he’ll have the same problems as Marcelo. Namely, lack of positioning, tactical discipline and defensive awareness. He really needs to improve in these areas (not to mention crossing). We should get Granero back and send Drenthe and Parejo (if De la Red returns) to Getafe next season!

Regarding Drenthe, I saw his one of his debut matches at the Trofeo Carranza, and could not believe then what made him a RM player. I lot of speed but very poor technical skill to merit the shirt. I have given him patience, ( I have even got a little for Faubert, but am v. negative) and haven´t seen anything to prove me otherwise. Apart from another poster´s comments on his being a Hair Gel signing (how is that guy still clinging to his job? Is it fear of what he might offload to the media if he´s let go?) he missed a golden opportunity to score against Barça this season, when miraculously they were still holding Barça at bay. I´m sorry, you can´t receive a higher salary that what Robinho was getting to bottle it like that.
The Bernabeu will never forgive, I´m afraid, he´ll be gone this summerPosted from

pretty fair comments all of them. I didn’t know he was getting paid more than Robinho; that does change my perspective a little I admit.
It strikes me he needs a ‘defining moment’. (E.G. Higuain track back to slide tackle and scoring the winning goal v Espanyol 07.)
….sadly maybe his defining moment already happened when he fluffed it against Barca this season.Posted from

Drenthe if he could work on his defending could make a great left back he is super fast , strong and can cross the ball , as a winger he is garbage though

It’s strange – I don’t know if I’m just poor at reading his skills, but I always thought Drenthe is even worse at defending than Marcelo. Corey and I have disagreed about this since his debut. Corey thought he didn’t have the attacking skill set to be a winger, I thought he didn’t have the defensive positioning/skills to be a left back.
But I still think we should give him his chances. I see him as a good option for a late sub, who’s pace can possibly make a difference.

Drenthe went too early to RM, he didn’t even have a regular in the 1st team at Feyenoord. He might never make the grade for RM, maybe he does, let’s see for the remainder of this year.

Drenthe is a GREAT…athlete. Seriously, the guy is a freak of nature. The first time I saw him play I thought he had another gear because of the way he ran by everybody.
However, you have to ask does he have the “talent”. In football, there’s a difference between being blessed with a freakish body and having “talent”. This is the sport IMO closest to the arts (music, painting, composing, etc.). There are geniuses who simply get it. It comes natural. They can see the whole field and imagine passes and runs that others can’t while having the touch and feel of the ball to execute them. They can control the ball like its a part of their body not because somebody taught them but because its natural. Those are the Maradona’s, Messi’s, and Di Stefanos of the world. That talent, for the most part counts in football more than physical talent. Look at Xavi, he’s slow, he can’t dribble or take somebody on one on one but he is a genius when it comes to managing the game, seeing passes, and making them.
Its pretty safe to say that Drenthe doesn’t have that type of talent. Winger is the position that most benefits from genius dribblers like Robben and Messi instead of pure physical specimens. Sure he can outrun people but he can’t see passes, cross, or take somebody on one on one and consistently win. He COULD make a good fullback because it is the most physically demanding position stamina and possible speed (you gotta track back quickly) wise which would benefit his physical tools. However, he HAS to have the work ethic to become good at reading plays and positioning. This is where I’d be scared for him. Like some said he seemed to have thin skin. Not a good combination for somebody who has to work harder.

I tihnk his skin will thicken given a little matuirty.
When I have seen him in the flesh, it’s hard not to be impressed by his power and speed – but it’s all a bit frantic.
I think he’s only played at left back once and was even more awful than Marcelo – like a bull in a China shop.Posted from

one of the greatest ever wingers for us ,was someone with blinding speed.he also had superb ball control though.went by the name of francisco gento. now, drenthe can’t be compared with the cantabrian gale but if he improves his ball control, there might be hope for him yet.
on a sidenote, there has been a lot of debate about the best players to have worn the white shirt.but who do you guys think is the best man to have been at the helm ??? president, hands down,is don santiago bernabeu yeste.but what about the coaches ??? i would say its either alfredo di stefano or miguel munoz.both legends.both the architects of great teams.

Actually it’s really tough to say who the best coach was, because of so many factors that come into play. The team and squad, the pressure by the people above, the time given to build the team and so much more. However, on the basis of the awesome team play and the handling of so many egos simultaneously (till the ego of Florentino Perez finally overcame him), i’d have to vote for del Bosque. (cant vote for the coaches before my time). Though for the first 6 months of Quieroz’s reign we were pretty amazing too. I wonder how it’d have been under him if we had had a stronger squad, like if Makelele and Hierro had been retained.

the likely return of Perez greatly concerns me. I think we need a president who is prepared to work in the background – not a superstar in his own right.
Personally, I want a forgetable president, one whos name is instantly forgotten, same goes for director of football.
Bring back Capello I say, let him run things as a club should be run – from the manager.Posted from
