Hello everyone and Eid Mubarak! As Muslims, including my fast end the season of Ramadan and fasting and enter the 3 days of Eid and celebrations that follow, I choose to write a preview of the Osasouna game. Why am I doing that exactly? It’s my undying love for this club and for writing for this blog. No but seriously, Corey and Jordan are a bit busy before the game, so I offered to leave you guys with something so you have an idea of the game coming up. So, after completing a 6 hour Mcat exam yesterday, writing a simple preview should be easy eh?

It’s not, especially when you have Corey shooting out previews like he gets paid thousands of dollars to do it. Which doesn’t help is me not watching the first Osasouna game last week. No problem though, I will do my best to show you why we love Coreys previews so much. So here it goes.

First Home game of the season:

One of the things that make Mourinho soo “special” is his home record. He has never lost a home game in the last 8 years. That is impressive for any coach. Regardless of style as well. Pelle almost went the whole season unbeaten at home, only to stumble against Barcelona. Not only did he go unbeaten, but if my memory serves me right, it was all wins. To win La Liga, with Barca at the standards they are at right now, you can’t risk not winning every home game. You can’t risk drawing games. Every point will count. As many have mentioned before, 10 draws will not win you La Liga mister Mourinho. A win tomorrow is an obligation, just like it is every week. With the team coming up from international break after a disappointing draw against Mallorca, they have to be striving to open the goal scoring account for the club this week. And what better crowd to do it against?!

Squad list:

No, AS and Marca still print shit. After we all got excited that Morata might get some playing time against Osasouna, and after we saw four of our young guns train with the first team all week, we look at the squad list and we don’t see Morata. What the hell AS, I thought he was starting? Hmmm would AS and Marca print stuff that they are not a 100% sure of? I mean this is a newspaper and journalistic integrity is important…….. You get what I’m going for here? Yea moving on.

realmadrid crest

Squad list:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek and Adam

Defenders: Carvalho, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Arbeloa y Mateos

Midfielders: Khedira, L. Diarra, Granero, Xabi Alonso, Canales, Pedro León, Di María, Özil

Attackers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Higuaín.

Pepe is back from injury and all of Lass, Marcelo and Ronaldo were able to get through knocks to make the squad list. As I mentioned before, Morata has not been included in the squad list, which is a shame because with Benzema being jaded from his midweek game, he could have made a late come on. Also disappointed Juanfran has not made the squad.

Biggest surprise for everyone is Ronaldo making the squad, after being mentioned to be injured until after the Ajax game. I guess all that training has helped him recover fast? Gotta admire his commitment. Although I do think the whole injury thing was over exaggerated so avoid him getting more injured on international duty. (think last year people).

Finally, Diarra doesn’t make the squad. Shame.

Real Madrid Line up:

Mourinho talks a lot in interviews, something I was not used to under Pelle. It is interesting and kinda nice sometimes since it makes the job of writing something like this easier. He did mention some of the starters. Ready to be shocked? Ronaldo will start. I don’t understand this move. It’s a home game against Osasouna, one right before our first CL game. Are we really going to risk one of our best players? Doesn’t make sense to me and doesn’t seem logical considering the circumstances. Unless there is something we don’t know about. Hmmmm. I wonder. I personally would have kept him for a substitute role in case the team needs him. Not smart to risk one of your best players soo early in the season. Especially against a physical side like Osasouna.

Mourinho also mentioned that Ronaldo will play against Higuain upfront. He said that Xabi Alonso will partner Khedira in the middle. He also said that Ramos Pepe Carvalho and Marcelo will marshal the defense. Finally Ramos where he belongs! You will notice the difference during the game when you have a force like Ramos bombing forward. Mourinho didn’t say anything about the other 3 remaining spots in the team. I am baffled who will play in goal. Adan had a good preseason, but I think Mourinho will go for experience with Dudek.

The remaining two places have soo many people going for them. Canales, Ozil, Di Maria and Leon are the four most likely to take a spot there. It’s one of Ozil and Canales. Having played two games in midweek and considering his age and probable lack of full fitness, I think Ozil will start. I am not sure who Mourinho will pick, but I think with Ramos at right back, he should go for Leon so they can bombard the right side of midfield together. Although, I really do think Mourinho fancies Di Maria more than Leon. With that said, considering Leon had nothing to do during international break, I think he will get the nod.

Here is how Mourinho will line it up:

————-Casillas————–
Ramos—Pepe—Carvalho—Marcelo
———-Khedira—–Alonso——
Leon——-Ozil——-Ronaldo—
———Higuain———–

Here is what I would put out:

——Adan——-
Ramos—-Pepe—Carvalho—Marcelo
——-Khedira—-Alonso——-
Leon—-Canales—-Ozil—
——Higuain

I only excluded Ronaldo because I wouldn’t risk him. I didn’t include Diarra since he is not in the squad list. Had he been there, I would have used him since you can use a physical player like him in the squad especially against Osasouna who play really physical.

Osasouna Line up:

osasuna

Osasouna is a team with no financial capability of throwing out signings like we do, but they do have a great ability of hanging on to their best players. Monreal, Nekounam and Pandiani have been with the squad for a while and they have been doing well. They did lose Azpilicueta, I player I really like. Him and Monreal made one of the best two full back combinations in La Liga. I also think, these two will be the future of Spanish football in that department. Josetxo, their first vice captain is out injured and I’m not sure he is going to make the team. In his place will be second vice captain, Miguel Flano. Here is how I think Camacho will line up his team:

———Ricardo——–
Damia—Flano—Sergio—Monreal
—Punal—Soriano—Nekounam
——–Juanfran/Camunas—
———–Pandiani——-

I don’t think Camacho will go with two wingers against us, as he will look to counter, and Juanfran is a player that can help with this considering his speed. I would be happy if Camacho surprises me and plays both Juanfran and Camunas, dropping Punal in the process. That would make the game more open, although Juanfran is a winger that can fulfill his defensive duties well. Juanfran is a Real Madrid Cantera product, making 6 appearances for the main team. He usually brings his A game when he plays against us.

Playing Style:

So what kind of playing style are we playing exactly? Its sad when I know more about Osasouna’s game style than my own teams. But that is what happens when you change coaches every year and when the new coach uses a different formation every game. I know one thing for sure though, we are not going to be winning the aerial battle in this game. Osasouna are very strong in the air, especially when it comes to their two center backs and defensive midfielder. Not only that, but now with Damia as the new right back, they have another aerial power from there. So passing should be the key here, not long balls.

If I see a weakness in the Osasouna squad, then its their right back. I don’t know if anyone remembers the old Betis squad, but Damia was a regular in there. I am not used to always seeing him in defense, as he is very versatile and can play in the middle as well. I have honestly seen him in the middle of the park more. He is not the fastest player, so Ronaldo should be able to out run him easily. He is also not the best defensively, unless Segunda division has made him better, which I doubt.

Whoever is going to play in the middle, either Canales or Ozil is going to bring his physical game up or else he will disappear. Soriano and Nekounam will rough you up to say the least. Osasouna is a very physical squad and they will do anything to stop our flow of game. This will get frustrating so the key here is an early goal. They will sit back, despite their goal keeper claiming otherwise, and they are good at doing that. Ronaldo will have a lot of chances for long shots, as I see the defense being tight as it can be. Soriano usually morphs into a third center blocking any runs. Their defensive line sits back very tight.

As for Osasouna’s attack, Pandiani is not the most skilful striker but he is a goal poacher. He is good in the air and a good finisher. He is the kind of striker that pounces on the little mistakes that center backs make, so Pepe and Carvalho have to be on the top of their game. Juanfran will be supplying to crosses and the dangerous runs and he will look to catch Marcelo off guard by creeping in from behind. The midfield will be very tight and hard to break through. I should note, our two center midfielders need to cover both Ramos and Marcelo when they make their forward runs or else we will pay for it.

Lekic is a new striker that they brought in and he will definitely make an appearance in the game. Masoud is also a midfielder that fits well into the Osasouna system and may as well make an appearance from the bench. Nelson, also a former Betis play will provide cover for the defense in case an injury happens.

So what to do to handle this Osasouna side? Wing play! I know Monreal is good, but the target should be Damia. Also, I think Leon and Ramos can give Monreal a very busy night if they both decide to bring their A game. Ronaldo and Ozil, who is known to drift to the left a lot, will also take care of the left side with the help of Marcelo’s forward runs. Ronaldo and Ozil will have to track back though as Juanfran will be looking to take advantage of Marcelo’s forward runs.

Higuain will have a difficult game in my opinion, with the two center backs he is facing against being very physical. Higuain and Ronaldo are also two players that need space to move into to, and Osasouna will make sure not to give them that.

Sergio-Ramos1

I am worried about Ronaldo, since Osasouna have the solution for his trickery. They will beat him up. With him just coming off of an injury, I don’t know if that will be healthy for him. We will have to wait and see though. Let’s hope for the best. Last note, Xabi and Khedira will also have an interesting battle against the Osasouna midfield as Xabi is more of a technique kind of player than physical, so it will be interesting to see how he fairs against physical midfield players.

Predictions:

I hate doing predictions, but I will definitely say a win for Madrid. Camacho loves making it hard for us (he is a Madrid legend and was a coach for around 6 games I think?), so I don’t think it will be a high scoring game.
Maybe 2-1?

Hope you enjoyed this, I’m sorry I don’t have the time or the mental capabilities to match what Corey usually does so you have to settle for this. If you want though, here is Corey’s preview for last season, the team hasn’t changed much and the tactics are still the same.

Happy eid everyone and lets hope for a win!

Hala Madrid!!

As you guys have already noted there is much, much more focus this year on good defense, although defense wasn't a huge issue under Pellegrini, and no serious test received as yet. The big challenge for Mourinho and one that he hasn't had to face before at any of his previous clubs is can he make Madrid play aesthetically well?? Obviously a personal challenge that he has voluntarily set himself on accepting the position, but whether he succeeds or not we have yet to see.... I was surprised at the little patience the Bernabeu offered, and Mourihno has respectfully played down the whistling but we all know at Madrid it's not all about results.
We are getting to see a pattern - Higuain, Ronaldo and Benzema instead of Pandev Etoo and Milito, Ozil for Sneijder, the 2 holding midfielders and four at the back, width from the full backs until Leon came on.On paper this should be a fairly attacking formation, but we saw very little creation of football yesterday, time will tell. (bear in mind that Mourinho has gained in midfielders, whereas Pelligrini had them stripped away)
Our only goal was scored from quick reaction to Osasuna's free kick so the team seems set up for counter attacking play which could be important against better teams, where as yet we haven't gained superiority for possession based football

    What is this, no review????

guys this is our 1st win @ home this season, our 1st win in la liga this season hell mou's 1st official win????!!!!!!!
well i guess ya'll werent too impressed with the win, but hey barca lost {@ home} so thats fuel enough for me :)

  • haha, i think jordan is finishing up a review if I'm not mistaken. You will have to wait another week for my reviews since I'm celebrating Eid with family and friends right now.

A review is done regardless of a win or loss.

  • das_phantom

    Cool!!
am sure u must have been eating loads of beef like godzilla since yesterday...loooooooooooool
happy eid bro & hala madrid!!!!

  • what i really liked more than anything in yesterday's disciplined and professional is how much willingness the likes of ronaldo ( and everyone else ) were showing in tracking back and pressurizing Osasuna thats the main reason Osasuna did not have a single chance on goal all game long under Pellegrini you would just see Ronaldo and Kaka walking around while the opponents are building play up hopefully they keep this up

    GUTI IN ZEUS-LIKE FORM!!!!

  • hehe

Honestly, it seems that the only thing that troubled our squad today was finishing. Our midfield was pretty good and our defense was pretty much rock solid. If we can get our forwards in rhythm soon, RM will be a much more threatening team.

It's pretty bad of me, but Khedira annoys me because he always seems to be breathing through his mouth. Whenever I see him I keep urging him to close his mouth. And he wears such a dumb expression to go along with it too. But, besides that from what I've seen so far he's not much of an improvement over Lass either, at least not tactically. I was all right with the idea of buying a box-to-box midfielder, because Xabi really likes to drop deep and get the ball off the defenders. In theory that would mean that your other cm would find himself further up the pitch a lot of the time and that it would be useful if that cm has capable attacking qualities. Right now though, the two of them are too static. Xabi is taking on the brunt of the defensive duties when it should be Khedira and playing much too deep because of it. Then Khedira starts to play too high up the pitch (making runs forward as he's probably been instructed) and as a result we have nobody controlling/playing in the middle of the pitch. That was our problem yesterday. I preferred what we did last year with Xabi acting as the deep playmaker, constantly acting as the link between our defense and attack and Gago covering for him, sort of as a his helper. I think both Gago and Momo Diarra can play that role very well, with both of them being pretty accomplished passers themselves.
Speaking of Alonso, if you have a player like him who can spray passes around all over the pitch then why are we playing without any width? It was the same problem last year and I thought that was the reason why we bought Di Maria and Pedro Léon? Even if we didn't have Alonso, we still shouldn't be playing so annoyingly narrow. Our fullbacks weren't providing it either yesterday. Most of the time Marcelo cut inside and found himself in the mediapunta postion strangely enough and Ramos hardly dared to go up until we got our goal.
Pipita must have been jetlagged yesterday, he took to long to take his shots. I don't understand why Marca are singling him out as out as "Our worst" though. I thought they would stop picking on him after he had signed his new deal under our current president. C.Ronaldo was probably even more wasteful than him. He still comes across as if he's always playing for himself instead of for the team. I really hope Mourinho's will fix that attitude.
Mourinho seemed to be happy with our defense in these last two games. That's fair, but Mallorca and Ossasuna don't really have any significant attacking qualities. I really like Carvalho though! If we couldn't buy a left back (BOO) then he's probably the next best thing. Finally we have a top class central defender again. Ozil was our best player by far yesterday, but with Kaka/Canales/Granero already here we didn't really need to buy him.
Hopefully Mourinho will fix our problems soon, but I guess it took Pellegrini a while too before he stopped playing that dumb 4-2-2-2 formation.

  • das_phantom

    *yawn*

  • Amir

    LMAO!!!!

  • das_phantom

Marca - Hercules gave Barcelona the kick Mourinho was afraid CR7 would receive ....looolz

  • I want to add one more thing, lets keep it civil. Insults will not get your point across. I might not like Ronaldo but i still cheer for him when he is playing for us. That is ok people! And if someone criticizes him that doesn't mean you have to insult them and take it personally. This is a blog and its where views are shared. Shared in a civilized way. Same goes to the other side.

  • Ryan mcmanus

Shut the hell up, man, trying to tell everyone else what to do like you know sumthin... no, just kidding, I agree, people could be a bit more civil...

  • Both Ronaldo and Higuain are off their game. The latter being wasteful and unlucky and the former seeming distracted and a tad more selfish than he usually is (minus that pass). They both need to up their games so we can go back to scoring. The only way they will do that is by popping that season cherry and scoring. I hope higuain is rested for Ajax game. He plays better when he sees that he might be dropped

  • Stylo

benzema should have played where higuain was played today. benzema finishing's a lot better than higuain and his built also allow him to be a target man as well. he's wasted at the wide area. he played ok but really higuain's the one who should have played wide.

  • labomba

Well unfortunately it seems Mourinho has him earmarked as Madrid's Etoo. Also what happened to my hero Xabi? He was uncharacteristically off his game yesterday, playing far too deep as per

  • CS

But a few of the chances that Ronaldo & Higuain missed were off Bezema's crosses.... is Benzema a winger in Mou's system?

  • Ramses

Ozil receives a standing ovation on his home debut.....gives me shivers.

  • twp85

today seems to be the day of shock in the world of football. Man utd conceded 2 goals in dying minutes, both Barca and Milan lost 2-0 to newly promoted sides, Roma lost 5-1 and Ronaldo played like shit

  • Meri

What was wrong with Ronaldo, so selfish except that brillant pass to Higuain.Instead of Higuain Mou should've substituted him.
    Anyways Ozil was awesome,
    Khedira much better than Lass
Carvalho joined the attacks at the right times
Higuain not that good old Pipa
Benzema with more confidence than last season
and above all the sweet three points at the right time.
Although we could've been much better I'm satisfied with the outcome.

  • bad game from us...but 3 points what counts early in the season.
Ozil , khedira and Marcelo where the better players tonight, and CR,Higuain, and Benzema where the worst.
i hope for a better showing this midweek against Ajax.

  • Benzema ? come on the guy was involved in almost all of our build ups which is what he was played to do

  • SC

I will echo the comments already on this board: Ozil was fantastic. He showed what he can do on the breakaway, and his passing is superb. Everything I loved watching him do in the WC - he did today. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Ronaldo just seems to be in his own little world. He had terrible touches today, and always drops his head when he screws up. And where was he in Carvahlo's celebration? He was the closest person to Carvahlo just before the goal, but was the last person to congratulate... I was not impressed.

  • twp85

I know this is childish but this one is for all the arrogant Barca fans and media : 2nd week into the season and Barca is already playing the chasing game

nah, really, this one point lead means nothing. just happy to get the pressure out of the way and start winning games

  • so Ozil for 12 mil seems to be the deal of the decade eh

  • twp85

Good win, not the most interesting match but not too bad either for the 1st home match of the season.
Can't stand Ronaldo in many occasion, he need to calm down. Having said that it was a very smart pass to Carvalho.
I might be the very few ppl that is happy to see Ramos running up and down the right flank again, I like him a lot more there.
Very sad that Higuain didn't score, our forward need to start scoring. The link up is not there but you kind of expected that.
Quite like Khedira in the midfield, defintely give a lot more calmness compare to Lass and Gago.
Is it me or we seems to take very short passes and free kicks, not complaining but is it Mou style?
Finally Ozil is amazing, good run, good passes, just imagine him and Caneles for the future.

    Next up, Ajax

  • MourinhoBigFan

Higuain today = shit finishing + unlucky. If the finishing were OK, we could've easily won 3-0 or 4-0. The defense is excellent today. I don't recall any saves by Ikerbonero, not even easy ones. Anyways 1-0 win is still a win & 3 pts. We're above Barca, it's the most important thing to take away from this game.

We begin to look what Mourinho teams are supposed to look, at least on the defense. Mou is still missing that Drogba/Milito figure at the front. Higuain is supposed to be that man. To me, Ozil is MOTM. He's always dangerous throughout & man, how deceptively fast that guy is. I'm excited at seeing how this team will develop.

  • das_phantom

    "ikerbonero" loooooooooooooool

  • after the goal we put our foot off the gas as if we were happy with the 1 goal , other than i liked what i saw from some players , higuain and ronaldo were awful though with higuain being a little worse at least the latter got an assist

  • Ryan mcmanus

    Casillas 6.5
    Ramos 6.0
    Pepe 6.0
    Carvalho 7.0
    Marcelo 6.0
    Alonso 6.5
    Khedira 7.0
    Ozil 8.0
    Ronaldo 3.5
    Benzema 6.5
    Higuain 4.0

    Pedro Leon 6.5
    Granero N/A
    Di Maria N/A

  • hehe

Okay Ronaldo wasn't that bad. Sure he didn't have a great game (he also just came back from an injury) and didn't score, but he did assist the only goal and did some pretty great passes. It seems like if Ronaldo doesn't score in a game, he automatically gets criticized by everyone. I think he did just as fine as Higuain and Benzema, if not better.
Ozil was just plain brilliant and Kaka will have some serious competition for his postition.

  • Guest

    you re a biased idiot.

ronaldo was all over the pitch connecting well with everybody, tracked back and provided the assist for the only goal.

higuain on the other hand missed 3 sitters.

benzema was good but pretty much did the same stuff as ronaldo but played less minutes and didnt make any goals. still u rate him much higher than ronaldo.

ozil was fantastic but we knew that already - khedira very impressive.

  • We clearly did not watch the same game. What was so impressive about Khedira? That he did his job. Is that all it takes to impress fans, that the players put in a mediocre level of effort and look competent? He way okay, average, whatever.

Ozil went above and beyond, so he gets to be labeled "impressive".

Ronaldo was awful compared to his normal standards. He cant be good every game. His assist, while a smart pass, was because he duffed a sitter at the keeper. Lets keep that in mind. Its still early days for this team, but the 1-0 wins are creeping in already...

  • Nani

Guest, don't mind Ryan. He's just fucked up.

  • Ryan mcmanus

poor Higuain. he's had some good shots, but the GK has had his number. Ronaldo can't even put anything on net. And benzema was playing more of a Kaka-role today i think. passing and linking up. i rarely saw him in the box, although like jordan said that could be a bad thing since he's our only striker besides higuain.

  • 123halamadrid!!!

is it just me or is Mesut Ozil the most intelligent I ever saw at realmadrid??? pure class

  • what about the likes of zidane and redondo

  • 123halamadrid!!!

yeah maybe I got a little too excited I think..lol..but actually I never saw redondo play..sorry bout zidane.. :P

  • Ryan mcmanus

that's a little much there, buddy. but he has been good, prolly the best in this match.

  • Higuain should have been the one to come out benz is playing well

  • Ryan mcmanus

    why benzema?

  • Ryan mcmanus

i guess he doesn't want to demoralize higuain and ronaldo further by subbing them?

  • benzema hasnt been that impressive, I guess the question is what is worse: missed chances or not having any chances at all?

  • ok i meant sub Higuain out

  • Guest

Are we going to win all the silverwares with these strikers?

  • Ryan mcmanus

    Out:
    Higuain
    Ronaldo

    In:
    Canales
    Di Maria

  • sub CR7 out please lol

  • Ryan mcmanus

    this ref doesn't like alonso...

  • Ryan mcmanus

benzema is actually doing pretty well in a central role, as if we need more help there...

  • Ryan mcmanus

Ronaldo's finishing is hilariously bad, prolly worse than Higuain's at the moment.

  • Özil is such a stud

  • Ryan mcmanus

lol perhaps an unlikely source for the first goal of the season...

  • GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL DE CARVALHO

it all started with Ozil again

  • 123halamadrid!!!

Ozil is by miles the best player today..Carcalho scored..lol..yeahhhhhhhhhhh

  • 123halamadrid!!!

    carvalho* oopzzy

  • Ryan mcmanus

    golllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • Daniel

What a ball from Ozil!!! Goal from Carvalho!

  • RICARDOOOO

  • Ryan mcmanus

if we could only start scoring, we have a team that you would think would find it difficult to stop scoring...

  • Daniel

It's still 0-0 because Ronaldo and Higuain. Both absolute shit shots and Ronaldo with some useless dribbling. Please prove me wrong on the second half. On the upside, most of our other players are playing quite well, mostly Ozil, Benz and Khedira.

  • Jiwonsi

Disagree about khedira...this has got to be the most lightweight Real Madrid midfield I have seen in years. Ozil looks like he should be in another team, Madrid deserve better...

  • seriously

You are seriously stupid for that comment. Ozil was the best player on the field, you must have watched the game blindfolded. The Flop of the match was Higuain and people should also critisize Ronaldo, he wasn´t good at all and people should admit it.

  • Jiwonsi

You should watch more football. Rooney, Tevez, Silva--these are all players that are match for Real Madrid. Ozil played well, he could walk into any other team in La Liga, but he is not yet the finished article.

  • ka

very disappointed with higuain and benzema..time to bring on canales/leon ...

  • twp85

not impressed by Ronaldo this half to be honest

  • twp85

Lol they are playing the world cup song in the stadium. I like Ozil very much

  • Match Stats
    Real Madrid Osasuna
    Shots (on Goal) 12(2) 3(1)
    Fouls 9 14
    Corner Kicks 5 3
    Offsides 1 1
    Time of Possession 68% 32%
    Yellow Cards 0 2
    Red Cards 0 0
    Saves 1 2

  • Ramses

    Only 2 shots on goal?!

    ...meh

  • i dont think the first half was disappointing by any means sure we didnt score but we are not playing badly at all if higuain wasnt being crap then we would be up by 2 goals

  • Stoni

wow that was the most exciting 45 minutes of my life: now to watch a snail crawl away

  • Ramses

Dissapointing first half...Ozil's been our only bright spot right so far.

  • I'm glad im not watching the second half.

  • Ryan mcmanus

so far 135 minutes played, no goals

  • So who else has been impressed by Ozil and benz in this first half

  • Ryan mcmanus

i think khedira has been good too

  • yea him too
