Presidential Election….1 Candidate?

By: Corey | May 21st, 2009

So Ramon Calderon could end up in prison, which means his run for the presidential seat probably will never get off the ground, nor should it. Florentino Perez has declared he is ready to run for the spot, and a whole host of names were reported in the media, but really no one has panned out yet. The major stumbling block seems to be the 50 million euro’s in capital that is required to run for the seat, which seems odd because a candidate should not need to be a millionaire to run, as he does not use his own money to run the club. Need less to say, it seems that the Real board has used that measure as a yard stick of the candidates, and it has weeded out a lot of the pretenders.

Yet it has created a situation where Florentino Perez still looks set to run unopposed as of now. Not exactly what any fan wants to see, even if you want Perez to win. A little competition usually brings out the best in people, or it drums out even more outrageous promises to fulfill.

Juan Onieva has apparently raised the 50 million plus needed to run, so he will be declaring his candidacy today (woops, already did forgot about the time difference), so there is someone to run against Perez, which will force an election to take place. Onieva is still somewhat of an unknown as far as who is included in his platform (he does not have Marca in his corner like Perez does). It is known that he wants to bring Hugo Sanchez on board as coach next season, which does not seem like the best idea in the world given the troubles former great strikers of the early 90’s have had in their coaching roles. Klinsmann and Van Basten, just to name a few. Onieva had this to say about his plans:

“First, that Real Madrid is a sporting entity over 100 years old and we don’t want to stop being one,” said Onieva. “Second, that winning is not enough, we have to win with style.

“And third, that the cornerstone of the project has to be to the members. The members are the end and the beginning of the club.

“We have to get these values back. We need everyone’s contribution with the aim of making Real Madrid greater. We have to recover our principles.”

“I would place the focus on two great columns: players from the youth team and Spanish players.”

Okay thats all good and fair, but how are you going to do it? I will be waiting to hear that before I endorse him or Perez. You may remember that Onieva was vice president of Real from 1995-2000, serving under Lorenzo Sanz, and in that time Real won two Champions Leagues and the league twice. He has the experience and the knowledge of how Real Madrid works, so he looks like the best bet against Perez right now. Whether he can get more support from the media remains to be seen, but his platform is still without candidates for various sporting and technical roles, which I need to see as well.

This will develop as the days go by, and to be honest, its still early as there are still 10 days to declare your running for the presidency. I expect one or two more candidates to flirt with the idea, and hopefully they will go ahead with it. But for now, I only see a Perez victory, despite Onieva’s qualities. It is being reported that Perez is favoring axing Juande Ramos in favor of Michael Laudrup, which as I have said about Onieva wanting Hugo Sanchez, may be a little premature. Bernd Schuster did not exactly pan out like we all wanted him too….

So your thoughts on Onieva or Perez, or the elections in general for that matter.

Yep, Onieva has withdrawn his candidacy : http://www.marca.com/2009/05/22/futbol/equipos/real_madrid/1243006408.html

No reason given yet, other then the people he wanted to get for his back room staff all jumped ship on him yesterday supposedly. It will be made official on Monday, Memorial Day.

So yes, 1 candidate is left. Unless someone comes out of no where in the next 8 days, its Perez’s rule again….

Best of luck with your new regime, everyone. Love or hate Perez, you’re lucky to have so solid a wall of support.

We in BarcaLand have a potential mess on our hands, as Laporta’s tenure ends soon, and lord knows who’s up for it. There are a few names in the hat, none of whom promise to be as strong.

As we have all learned, presidents matter. A LOT.

Laurent Blanc IMO will be a great manager. However, I’m not sure he is quite ready for Real Madrid just yet. Then again, that’s what just about everybody said about Guardiola, right? You guys need somebody who can build a whole team (personnel and philosophy and all) not just manage it at this point. Pellegrini would be interesting assuming Florentino has learned to stay the hell away from management and let his guys do their thing.

yeah Blanc is a good option. Pellegrini i like, but his insistence on always playing a double pivot in a 4-4-2 i don’t like, as in essence it will be what we’re gettng with juande.

I read something that pleased me greatly earlier today:
    http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/05/23/1282633/real-madrid-president-elect-florentino-perez-plans-valencia-raid-

i know i know, goal.com blah blah, but wouldn’t it be awesome if this were true. finally we’d be bringing in some great spanish talent, particularly david silva i love. just a shame we have to buy back a cantera player coz of incompetent management. and also i’d rather we gave them huntelaar instead of negredo if anything. Negredo’s superior at holding the ball and would do better than us for huntelaar who we didn’t need in the first place if we’d kept negredo. another example of incompetent management and misuse of funds.

and nihit, you’re right about porto, i forgot about their appointment of del neri and co who were fired so quickly noone even noticed

Because I’d rather see Negredo in his spot. Negredo’s stronger and better at holding up the ball and getting teammates involved. Huntelaar’s probably a better finisher, but he’s not very good with the ball at his feet and getting involved in the build up play. Negredo would bleed for the club and he’s Spanish as well. It’s probably too late now, but I’d have been happier if it was Negredo in Huntelaar’s place right now.

I’d rather have Ribery than Silva. He is almost as injury prone as Robben. We could use Robben or VdV to help get Ribery. Doesn’t Vaart want to go back to the Bundesliga anyway? I’m all for Villa and Albiol. Mata needs more time and wouldn’t start over the strikers we have. If we can’t get Villa I’ll settle for Negredo. Any ideas who would go on loan? Drenthe, Marcelo, Torres, Perejo, Palanca, Scorch, Bueno, Garcia? We have many talented youngsters.

There was a pretty good writeup in Marca the other day about the pros and cons of Perez…as a non-Madrista, I think it’s the wrong direction for your club, even if it gets the big names, but I don’t think right now there’s any chance of Perez not winning.

Okay so today the spanish radio station Cadena Ser have been talking during the match about possible adquisitions wich will be made by Flor$ntino. It was said that with a budget around 250-300 million € (100 million € would be player´s worth “?”) Madrid will be signing (with 3 possible exceptions wich havent been told): Clichy, Sagna, CR7, Silva, Villa, Xabi Alonso and Kaka. My guess is that the “exceptions” could be Villa and Silva the third remaining unknown. A million people have listened that all of this 7 players have already been tangled. What do you believe?

great day today, isn’t it ??? we bent over happily and let mallorca screw us in the back thoroughly. 3-1. great result. i am so darn anti-juande ramos right now and was telling my girlfriend over the phone that if i had a machinegun i would have mowed down all the peseteros playing for us right now. every single one of them. then i changed it to a thick stick with which i could beat them to death. shooting would be too easy and too painless for these putos.

we don’t need seven players. i would say 5 at the most.one quality cb, one lb, a playmaker, a winger and a striker.clichy would be a great signing at left-back. if not him, then lahm. bruno alves or godin for cb.or agger. kaka, ribery and negredo as the other three. not ronaldo or ibrahimovic.

Huntelaar sucks! I wasn’t convinced when he was being touted as a possible signing and I’m so sorely dissappointed at the way he’s playing now. Apart from poaching goals in the 6 yard box, he is capable of absolutely nothing! RVN could hold the ball up, had much neater ball control, could dribble a bit, etc. Huntelaar’s first touch is so bad that once the ball gets to him, it bounces away 5 meters from him resulting in a lost ball. He can’t pass worth shit either! I say, sell the sucker! Bring in Negredo instead! If Villa comes, even better! Or Benzema!

I agree for the most part with Real Rock’s comments: Clichy would be a great signing. Silva to me seems like a Spanish-sentimentality signing because despite his talents, he seems to be always hurt. Playmaker: Kaka I’d definitely like to see Kaka in that role. Winger: I also prefer Ribery to CR7. As for Centerbacks, I agree we need one, not sure who we can bring in though.

I do think that Juande needs to be given an offseason to work with the players and he deserves to be asked what he needs to bring his High-Octane Attacking Football ala Sevilla to Madrid. Apart from Arsene Wenger, who’s clearly not joining us, there isn’t manager out there whom I think can lead Madrid.

Ancelotti – Headed off for Chelsea? Otherwise, I think not too bad.
    Mourinho – Too Defensive
Pellegrini – No titles: is he any better than Juande?
Laudrup – He had ONE good season at Getafe, then he got fired in his next job. Not enough experience
Blanc – Not enough experience either though at least he has a title (the way things are going) to show for.

Guys, I know its pretty pointless to speak about potential squads for next season but anyway I’ve come up with a preferred line-up if reports, rumours and personal wants are fulfilled.

    Casillas
    Sergio Ramos – Pepe – Albiol/Garay – Clichy
    Ribery – Lass – Alonso – Silva
    Higuain – Villa

Yes, half of that team is new, but these are players that we have been linked to more than a few times and I think it is a big improvement in terms of balance, Spanish-ism and quality. While these buys will cost a lot of money, they are also much more realistic than Kaka, CR7 and the like. Your thoughts?

    Brian,

That’s right… more than half the team needs to be replaced. I’m not too distraught at the thought of it. We need to clean this mess up quickly. Your speculative seems about accurate given the rumors that we’re hearing. I do think that Kaka should/will have place in that team… perhaps with Higuain moving to the wing and Kaka playing behind Villa. Or with Kaka starting on the left side on paper but with acutally free reign to roam. Ribery will too… able to switch wings at will. A Villa-Higuain front line is good for 50 goals next season especially if they’re supported by that type of talent.
First striker off the bench would be Negredo. My vote is to keep Raul and RVN as 4th and 5th strikers.

I think that Kaka and Ribery can ‘Chip in’ (if you can call it that) another 30 goals between them. I think Silva’s injuries will give him a bench role (alongside Mata) for the wings.

In the middle, Lass will clean up and Xabi Alonso will organize things. Off the bench, I say get rid of Guti & VDV. Keep Diarra 1, and choose between Gago and Sneijder (I say keep Sniejder).

Your defensive line looks good to me. Marcelo should be re-converted to LB and learn to defend while accepting a lesser role next season. Keep Miguel Torres as a Utility Defender (he’s inexpensive, a cantera product and will never be faulted for a lack of effort). Garay will be the 3rd CB until he recovers from injury fully and finds his form to challenge Albiol and Pepe for a starting berth.

Now if only we can find a manager who can lead this team… hmmm….

    lol my eyes…my grey eyes…

it never ceases to amaze me how deluded madridistas like madridista mac and brian think that players with the quality of kaka, ribery, cr7, alonso, villa would even sniff at madrid.

gone are the glory days where stars would scamper to sign for madrid. We are now living in the days where each and every star madrid attempt to sign, they fail.

to think that even 1 star will come to madrid is unrealistic, but thinking 5 will come is truly absurd.

gone are the hala madrid days, the song is now being changed to lol a madrid lol a madrid

    how very insightful…
in all seriousness tho, the defence yesterday had an awful game. santana just dribbling through half of the team, and for the last goal real had 2 defenders on the goalscorer. i’m also concerned about raul, he’s already lost most of his use to the team, but we put up with it because he’s the leader/captain/motivator. clearly, he’s not even able to perform that function anymore, 4 games lost in a row! losing to barca and valencia is fair enough, but there is no reason we should lose at home to mallorca

Oh yeah… Welcome Back you you dumb*ss CBP. We missed you. Still stupid I see… or blind is it? Hahahaha.

Oh yeah…. I forgot… you’re the guy who doesn’t know his football history. So we Madridistas wouldn’t expect you to really know about what went on during Florentino Perez’s early years (where we we essentially a club in shambles till the biggest names in the game started to come one by one thanks to him).

In fairness… I agree with your assessments of most of our squad except for your comments on Lass, Higuain whom I think are quality players while Huntelaar to me is rubbish.

Go home CBP… we missed you. But you’re still stupid. So we changed our minds: you’re still not welcome here with those disrespectful idiotic comments of yours.

CBP, go comment on whatever team you support you waste of time.

Madridista Mac, I think we have to sell VDV, Javi Garcia, Guti, Gago and Sneijder and maybe even Mahamadou, they would all be bench players anyway. Not to mention the unknown case of De La Red’s health problem (I would rather he recovers and is our midfield general than spending for Alonso) as well as loaning Parejo. There’s also rumours that Granero will return, so I don’t know how its all gonna work.

While his assessment of our guys was right, there is no need for him to com here and spray insults and negative comments mindlessly to those in this forum and to this club.

To CBP I would be happy to to call you out on this website for every signing we make which you say we won’t.

To Brian: That transfer list of midfiled players looks about right. I’m hoping that guys like Gago, Diarra and Sneijder don’t find themselves in that list though. To me, Sneijder’s bad season was largely due to his injuries. Gago I think can still grow from this bad season and develop. Whereas Diarra for me is a real winner of a player.. the type any team would have use for: Real Madrid included.

yeah but where in the team would they find a starting place, say if we buy xabi alonso, which is becoming increasingly likely, then you would most like have lass and xabi in the midfield, and two wingers (out of ribery, silva and robben). these are all hopeful signings by the way.
