"definitely an ugly win, but that’s how its going to be for awhile. Guti’s injury is a godsend, now if only Raul goes down then we can really see some progress. De La Red and Higuain both need to start ahead of Guti and Raul regardless of whether they are injured or not. Didn’t the Spanish National Team victory this summer teach us anything!!"

ha ha i wonder why you say its going to be like that for a while.....perhaps because super robinho is not here anymore? in anycase i think real has a pretty solid game and is improving in establishing a solid game strategy, V d Vaart and de la red are important additions that can lead Real to become an ideal possession holder. VdVaart can play as a winger or midfielder, higuain has shown continuos improving form in the last couple years...if schuster manages to place raul up in front once again or allows higuain to start, id say itll do a lot for the team's confidence. I still do believe they need a new striker and perhaps winger but not as necessary.

It may have not been the best football the team has played, but its early in the season, and we were away to Santander of all teams. They are gonna jam up the game as best they can whether its Real or Malaga. I wasnt overly enthused with the play, but I am not angry about it either, sometimes you have to win like that, its the mark of a true champion. Or maybe im still so happy because the Buffalo Bills won on a last second field goal and are 3-0!

Ugly wins is what we've been reduced to -to some extent at least- because of the disastrous transfer policy of Calderón and Mijatovic over the summer. We have a lack of depth up front if any oout of Raul, Van Nistelrooy or Higuain get injured, Robben's the only natural winger with any speed, and injuries (Gago, Sneijder, Guti) mean we're going to suffer in midfield (even if De la Red seems to be stepping up nicely)

Hopefully the back four will stay healthy and focused.

I was secretly hoping that Corey would name this post: Real 2-0 Santander, a.k.a 'And you thought we were winning ugly before?'

But I think it was an important game for the team, not just in that we won a difficult match, but that a lot of elements of our squad were forced to develop (i.e. young players, wing play, defending fast counters). And to reiterate what's already been pointed out, it was great to see De la Red play a more central role in our attack. I hope he continues to improve (he did lose quite a few balls) and earn playing time.

A good solid victory for the whites. It was unimpressive, but it was a W. As expected, Santander parked the team in front of the goal most of the evening, but they didn't play a bad game. I thought they forced a lot of Madrid mistakes in the first half, specifically after we'd gained full possession and were trying to move upfield. Therefore, Racing earned some decent counterattacking opportunities because our passing upfield wasn't up to par. Lucky for us, they weren't able to capitalize and Iker saved an almost certain goal with his fist. I think Madrid came out in the second half with the intent of really taking control of the game, and the intensity and focus on the pitch markedly improved. That first goal was so nice and gave De la Red a deserving goal, I thought he played well with the ball at his feet. And Ruben also had some good defensive plays and tackles (he played very under control). I was impressed with Diarra's performance as well. He made some nice passes (and of course a few stinkers), but was solid in tackling and kept the ball in front of him most of the game. Higuain played well again...and although I won't say that he should supplant Raul, Raul needs to get his act together. It's not that he's been playing bad, but when you have someone like Higs playing so well, you need to give him time on the pitch.

Was really disappointed to see Guti go out, especially in such a freakish manner. The injury was far less substantial than the GolTV announcers initially led me to believe, so that's good news to me, but still...I hope he recovers fully and quickly. We are going to desperately miss him in Champions League competition. Hopefully, De La Red can step up and provide some incisive passing. Sneids is recovering extremely fast and that is promising.

Sporting Gijon on Wednesday, I'd love to see us demolish them 7-0 or something even more ridiculous than Barca. Hala Madrid!
