Real Madrid 5-0 Villareal
By: Corey | September 3rd, 2007A Classic Ass Kicking
What a game, Steve really summed it up as a game of two halfs, but I enjoyed both. I was pleased at the score but also the slick passing of Guti Sneijder and sometimes Diarra. The center midfield is more like an all over the field unit, Guti is so far forward and Diarra so far back, its the death of the double pivot (thank god). I like Sneijder, I never poo pooed his transfer, only that we lost De La Red because of him, but if he plays like this all year I will say De La Who?
Ok, that was real bad, I apologize. Anyways, Sneijder for man of the match definately, and he is the Liga top scorer for us from midfield, albeit 2 games into the season. Glad to see Raul scoring a goal that he always use to score, maybe he is returning to old form, while Sergio Ramos was terrific and Guti Haz(???) were great too. You know what, they all played great, even Don Canna, which is a surprise cause I thought he had a little knock but apparently not.
Heres the lineups:

Nice find with the pics, Corey. I agree with the quality of Sneijder - he may yet prove to be the young central MF we’ve been lacking, which makes any potential loss of De La Red or Adrian Gonzalez less stinging.
You mentioned Robinho not playing so well in the other comment thread, but I think he was pretty good. He’s a constant threat, and since he’s an awesome dribbler, he’ll always draw a second defender, leaving someone else open. And with him and Robben on the wings, it’ll be some pretty entertaining football.
Who I’m not convinced about is Drenthe. Nothing he’s shown so far has indicated that he was worth the transfer fee. He’s young, true, only 20, but was our leftback situation so desperate that we needed to get him? Surely Miguel Torres would’ve been a good stopgap solution, especially with the Heinze signing around the corner… Talk about a lack of foresight with Mijatovic and Calderon.

Hala Madrid!!! Can’t say that things are looking good just yet, as I still haven’t been able to watch the games, but from the highlights it seems like things are looking good. Schuster might be able to pull things together after all, who would have thought from that pre-season.

All the sudden Spain is hanging on Schuster’s words and collecting his spittle as if it were gold. This after two games. I’m not as convinced, being a true Schuster cynic, but it’s getting harder to remain cynical. We’ll see…
I gave my two bits on Robinho in the liveblog post, but I’ll summarize by simply agreeing with you, Steve. I, however, still think Drenthe was a great signing - remember that at the time we didn’t have Heinze and Marcelo had yet to impress, leaving our first option as Torres who’s good but right footed. Drenthe gives great depth to the left back position, and has the (preferred) option of being played at midfield. Which is the area I’m still a little nervous about. So far Diarra has apperently been good enough as the only defensive minded player ahead of the back four, but I’m not convinced that will last. Come Christmas, we’d better have worked out a more defensive line-up, or the Catalans might take us into a good old fashioned, high scoring, all offense shoot out, which despite our new signings they could very well win. Thus I lament De la Red. I hope he impresses at Getafe.
Hard not to be excited right now. Hala Madrid!
