Remember Him?
By: Corey | April 13th, 2009There has been alot of media speculation, more then usual it seems, with the league some what of a formality now and the looming elections for Real just over the horizon. Marca, AS, Sport etc. have all been running ridiculous headlines about imminent signings of big name players if Florentino Perez is re-elected, or silly coaching changes if say Arturo Baldasano takes over. One thing that has remained consistent though is former player Zinedine Zidane’s commitment to returning to Real if Perez was to win the election. Perez seems the early favorite for re-election, even though no one should forget the shambles he left the club in with his megalomanic-like running of the club in the final three years of his presidency.
Although Perez has remained almost completely silent and out of the public eye the past months, Zidane has been fielding a lot of questions about his possible return to Real with Florentino Perez reportedly including him as part of his platform for re-election. While I do not doubt Zidane’s football brain, or the fact that other administrators like Butragueno and Valdano would join Zidane as part of Perez’s team, I am still unconvinced of the Perez platform. Zidane has no previous experience in management, but from what I have read, he would be an advisor to Perez, although I swear I saw Zidane quoted as saying he wanted to be a youth coach. Either way, it seems like he would get some great experience under his belt and would be an idol for many at the club to look up to. But while we can not debate that yet because we have no official candidates yet, let us remember the beauty that Zinedine Zidane gave the Bernabeu in his 5 year stay with Real. Here is a little bit to remember him by.
My question to all of you is whether or not the inclusion of former great players like Zidane and Roberto Carlos, along with former players/administrators like Valdano and possibly Butragueno would really help Perez win over the fans who are less concerned with the garbage that Marca and Sport proclaim daily about the glitzy high priced signings for the summer. Selling papers sure, but is there any truth in it? Need less to say, the average Real fan is unconcerned with what is in the football tabloids, whether or not Perez and his team put the headlines there or not. Does Perez really think he can fool the public in to believing he has changed his ways by bringing on an all-star cast to run the club, but only to insist on big name signings, shunting the academy players, running up debts and turning Real in to an un-balanced circus of players?
I for one am not convinced that this man, despite the great back room staff (I can repeat that enough, I love Valdano, Zidane seems logical and he may even bring Michel and Butra back who knows?) promised, is what the club needs right now. The candidate that stands up and speaks to a re-focus on home grown talent, a firm financial standing and an end to the constant media interference with the club will get my vote. Your thoughts on any of the possible Real candidates? So far the people who have been interested are Eugenio Martinez Bravo, Arturo Baldasano (the Sven Goran Eriksson guy), and possibly Manolo Sanchis to go along with Perez.

I remember reading Eugenio Martinez Bravo had some interesting ideas, one of which was to re-establish a Spanish identity to Real Madrid, and some of the transfers being touted were Silva, Villa, Xabi and some others I can’t quite remember, and I also vaguel remember him stating that Granero and Negredo would be brought back and given a chance at the club. I’m not entirely certain of the above, but it sounds like this guy has a sensible approach and something that appeals to most fans (well, me anyway).

Yeah, Eugenio Martinez seems like a sensible candidate, with his Espanolization policies and lack of focus on only Galactic players. Even though i do think we need two or three top top players, those could be Villa and Silva. The only problem i have with him is his lack of top level managerial experience and the doubts regarding how he’ll deal with the club’s finances.

Also, id love for us to get Mata back but that would only be crowding up an already overcrowded left wing wouldnt it?

To be honest i m all for a perez return if he could replicate his first 3 years success and stop interfering with the choices the coaching staff makes then we would be going places

‘Give a manager more than 5 seconds to work magic’ should be the platform for one of candidates as well as stop buying Dutchies. I have no problem with Robben, Sneijder, and Klaas, but damn, just cuz he has been to holland does not mean Real need to buy him.

I’m against the return of perez – the galatico era is well documented as a dark period in our history and probably responsible for all the problems we are having now. Perez seems to think that the complete nonsense promise of super-players coming to Real will solve all the problems and win over all the fans.
I’m hoping that at least some of you will see through that, because it’s bullshit, plain and simple.
Yes it will be exciting to have the likes of Kaka and Ronaldo come to the club – IF they come. But the success of the club depends on how the club is managed going forward and whether Perez has actually learnt from his mistakes.
My guess is that he has not, everything this man has done so far is for his own personal gain rather than the clubs – so I remain skeptical about him until he proves otherwise by his actionsPosted from
