Roberto Carlos? David Beckham? Hell Why Not Makelele Too!

By: Corey | March 18th, 2009

So the presidential election posturing has begun at a rather slow pace, but it promises to pick up within the next few weeks. It seems that Perez is being linked with the return of Roberto Carlos, he personally suggested just that in an interview recently, as well as David Beckham, if his contract situation between LA Galaxy and AC Milan is not settled before the start of the European season in late August of next year.

As far as Beckham is concerned, he played well in spurts for us when he was used correctly, and I always appreciated what he brought to the table, but I think a possible move for him is a little far-fetched. A 10 million dollar price range seems a little high for a player of his age, and his contract ridiculously expensive, so it just doesnt make sense to me. Even if the silver tongued Galliani of AC Milan denied the whole thing. But a “Madrid source” has leaked this statement to the Madrid press:

“Florentino will try to bring Becks back if he decides to run for the presidency. It would be silly to deny it.”

I think its better we leave David Beckham to AC Milan or LA.

As for Roberto Carlos, he was one of the finest left backs we ever had, and was certainly one of the worlds best players in his peak. He was also an influential personality in the dressing room and with management, often reflecting his team mates sentiments in the press. He also loved to have a good laugh, something I think its missing from the squad. He had this to say about a possible return:

“If Florentino Perez will be elected Real Madrid chairman again and he would ask me to come back, I would think about it. I never said goodbye to Real Madrid for good”

Many forget he left for Fenerbahce because his less then stellar performances meant his contract was not renewed. Who is to say that 2 years on he will not have further regressed? I love Roberto Carlos, but again, I dont think this is a good move.

And finally, it has been mentioned in the press that Perez is interested in bringing in Mourinho as the coach for next year. Again, Mourinho is about as negative and ugly a tactician as Benitez is, so is there really anything gained over Juande? Besides Real Madrid getting more air time on Special 1 TV and us bloggers having a field day with Mourinho press conferences, this does not seem like a good move for the time being. I wont rule out Mourinho as the coach of Real in the future though.

One must decide for themselves what is actually true candidate posturing and what is made up by agents, administration leaks and the papers though. My guess is most is made up.

Radomir Antic slams Real:

Former Real coach Radomir Antic, best known for his stints with Atletico Madrid more then Real Madrid, has lashed out at the current management of Real Madrid, and the tactics that Juande Ramos has used recently. If you do not remember, Antic was coach of Real for the end of the 91 season, and then coached half of the 92-93 season before Beenhakker was mysteriously appointed despite Antic doing well that season. He has had a mixed career, but has also coached Barcelona, Atletico and currently the Serbian national team.

Antic’s comments on Real Madrid:

“The team is playing football that does correspond to the authority that Real Madrid should have,” he said in an interview for Terra.

“They have won ten matches thanks to inspiration. But if you ask me if they have dominated games, have they done the same things well game after game and been good at set pieces, then I would say no.

“There is no continuity in what the team does. There are ways of playing and ways to lose. I was surprised because the team had no authority in the two games and that is worse than either result.

“It will not effect things because the club has operated from day-to-day while hiding its great faults for a long time.

“People are going to have sit down and analyse what is happening, but nobody wants to do it. Everyone wants to just carry on with looking into it at all.

“There are serious problems, but nobody wants to speak up because they are just saying what others want to hear.

“After losing against Liverpool, Higuain spoke in press conference about the league as if nothing had happened. That is how things are.”

“I see Raul having to run back and help win balls in midfield, because the two defensive midfielders are not free to connect with the forwards. Things like that have to be looked at,” he continued.

“I never see any easy passes from Lass [Lassana Diarra] to link up to the attack. Is this what Madrid needs? I do not like to speak about the past, but when comparing it to other examples one can see.

“Fernando Hierro played in that same position and was able to score 34 goals in one season.”

“They are not different, the two of them play the same and they move with the ball and there are no surprises. They begin and end their moves in the same place without doing anything.

“They do not use the wings to push the full-backs up. I do not see any play where they try to create space when in possession.

“Spain won the European Championships by maintaining possession, by making the ball the priority.”

“The right wing is empty. They have bought [Klaas-Jan] Huntelaar and do not give him any crosses. He is given the ball from deep passes by Sergio Ramos and little else. What good is that?

“You have to buy players that can fit into your style. Anyone can score goals. Even so, Huntelaar is scoring goals. That is fortunate and means that nobody has asked any questions.

“Another thing that bothers me is that no Madrid player plays with their first touch and never use the space. The fans should be unhappy.

“Raul all his career has been a key player in scoring from corners at the near post. Tell me a single set piece in the last 15 games where Madrid have taken advantage of Raul’s skill there. That is the problem.

“We are speaking about a club as grand as Real Madrid, with everything that they can possibly want. But when talking about the way they play, it is incredible.”

DAVID BECKHAM IS SUCH AN EXCEPTIONAL ATHLETE!

    SCANDAL! SCANDAL! SCANDAL!

    EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!

George W. Bush continuously criminally stalked Margie Schoedinger to the point that she could not get away from it, and she committed suicide in desperation to escape: he murdered her.

“In her suit, Margie Schoedinger states that George W. Bush committed sexual crimes against her, organized harassment and moral pressure on her, her family members and close relatives and friends. As Schoedinger said, she was strongly recommended to keep her mouth shut. . . . Furthermore, she alleges that George Bush ordered to show pressure on her to the point, when she commits suicide” (blog of drizzten).

“One of those ‘very leasts’ [was] George Bush’s personal complicity in the death (murder to be precise) of my friend Margie Schoedinger in September of 2003. Determining the exact whereabouts and contacts of . . . George Bush on September 21 thru 22, 2003, should be entirely lacking in difficulty” (Leola McConnell—Nevada Progressive Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010).

McConnell is correct: Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death.

Bush is a racist hate criminal and hates black people (please feel free to see my “GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY” blog). (Schoedinger was an African-American woman.)

BEWARE: If the president of the United States hates one—for whatever reasons—he can continuously criminally stalk one to the point that one cannot get away from it, and one ultimately commits suicide in desperation to escape. He can murder people in this way.

Bush is getting away with his murder of Schoedinger—with no sheriff, prosecutor, or court willing to uphold the rule of law.

Bush’s method of murdering Schoedinger cannot exist in a vacuum: he must have murdered other people in the same way.

Bush should confess, come out with the names of all of the people whom he murdered in the disgusting way he murdered Schoedinger, undergo execution, and accordingly find himself at the intersection where he would be free.

(There are thousands of copies of the information above on the Internet. It exists very extensively in all major search engines. Please feel free to go to any major search engine, type “George W. Bush continuously criminally stalked Margie Schoedinger to the point that she could not get away from it, and she committed suicide in desperation to escape: he murdered her” or “Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death,” hit “Enter,” and find innumerable results.)

I'm all for a Carlos return, he'd a valuable squad asset as he is adored by the madrid faithful, and would be a great morale booster in the dressing room.
I'm not sure he could be a starter, but if the likes of Salgado and Heinze are still there, then i certainly wouldn't write Carlos off, as he is doing well in turkey (any turkish football fan will tell you,8 goals this season). i think a 2 year contract with the idea more leaned towards a coaching role after and working with the youngsters as Carlos in his prime still is an idol to many young players who grew up seeing this guy.

Things are looking pretty murky. At this point we have the "pro-Florentino" block vs. nothing. The pro-Florentino block is basically made up of nostalgics of the galacticos: they just hear the name of the big Kahuna and immediately begin to salivate at the prospect of signing big stars like Cristiano, Kaka and any other big name. Calderon has caused too much damage, and on a sea of mediocrity Florentino may look like the Big Messiah. Not very optimistic about the future, but probably things will be done in a more professional way than before. We'll se what happens. On the other side of the road we have the nothingness and just a few people that remembers the very dark ages of the last Florentino years, the lack of a serious signing politics, just buying the star of the moment and when there were not more Beckhams to sign improvisation, more improvisation and absolute chaos. For the pro-Florentino block these “critics” are savagely criticized as herectics, while these “critics” tend to fall on the cheap demagogic of more Spanish players and more cantera.

  • In order to help Sergio Ramos unleashed his true powers, we need a right winger that can help him defensively. Becks does that, he is willing to track back to cover the space, while Robben doesn't. Cicinho can do.

  • Pedro Pablo (Peter Paul)

Another big misconception about Roberto Carlos. This guy was absolutely marvellous at free kicks in his first years, and most of his attempts were VERY long range ones. But the last years of Roberto at Madrid were absolutely terrible in the widest sense of the word. Don't forget that this guy scored absolute wonderful free kicks against huge clubs in CL in the most important stages.

  • Pedro Pablo (Peter Paul)

    Ok, where do I start?

    - What Florentino Pérez did suggest to the journalist Jose Antonio Abellán is that Roberto Carlos would be great to train youngsters due to his charisma with children, something he's got in common with Ronaldo.

    - [...]"But a “Madrid source” has leaked this statement to the Madrid press: [...]

That paragraph is not entirely correct. It wasn't the Madrid press which originally published those news, but the British tabloid "The Sun".

    - The fee and wages Beckham would cost Real Madrid would mean nothing compared to the resources this player generates for his club. I mean, wasn't this clear enough? The only problem I see with Beckham is whether it would be a good move from a sport point of view.

    - Mourinho is a top coach, and top coaches are always linked to important clubs, still I don't see him as one of Florentino's main preferences.

  • Evo

hopefully roberto carlos wont be teaching anyone anything about free kicks.

Brian - I think i'd prefer Cesc any day to anyone, but ther's no chance of that in my mind. If we had Kaka like you say then maybe we could do without another striker (Pipa, Raul, Hunter, RVN) I assume we'd get rid of Saviola though.

  • Hector

You already have the closest thing to an Alves on the right (besides Maicon at least) in Sergio Ramos who, when on, can be the best attacking FB in the world. He's had a hell of a down season but then again this team's defensive deficiencies have forced him to play back and not bomb forward nearly as often as he did in seasons past. Just a merely competent left back would do wonders for both your defense and attack (Ramos could bomb forward again, adding much needed depth). That's how much Heinze sucks.

  • labomba

Brian, from what I can make out (the Spanish press talk to their readers like they all have medical degrees) they think they have got to the bottom of it but are still waiting for final test results to come through. It´s something genetic to the heart muscle.
The good news though is that Karanka apparently had the same thing and carried on playing.
I personally would like him to succeed as he is the best quality canterano we´ve had in a while.
I would love Villa to come to RM but apparently the deal is sealed for him to go to Barça to replace Eto´o. I like your proposals but know nothing about the LB´s you talk about, but for sure we need a Dani Alvés type player on the left, for width and attacking creativity.

I know this is a little off topic, but what do you guys think of De La Red? Will he recover and be able to compete for a place in the midfield come next season? Personally I would prefer a fit De La Red to signing Alonso or Cesc. Also, do you think that we need another striker e.g. Villa/Benzema? And do you think Garay is a worthy replacement for Cannavaro or should another CB be sought after? Finally, I think there are three positions we really need buys for: Attacking Midfield/Playmaker: Kaka (the only Galactico I think we need), Winger: Ribery/Silva and Left Back: Zhirkov/Lahm.

  • realrock

roberto carlos has the left back spot clinched in the all time greatest XI for real madrid.but is he even playing regularly for fenerbahce nowadays?? bringing him back won't be such a great idea. although, when i look at gabriel heinze , i get second thoughts.

  • Drew

The only reason for bringing back Roberto Carlos would be to teach the youth players how a proper left wing back is supposed to play. I could see bringing him back and promoting Chema Anton to get some experience from the best left back ever, but Roberto Carlos can't be even close to his prime now. Maybe bring him back as a coach?

  • Sambit Mishra

These rumoured transfers must be a joke...perhaps Beckham we could use right now, he seems to be doing well at Milan, but at that price and age...sounds like Perez is once again going down the shirt sales path

Antic is Spot on...except when did Hierro score 34 goals in a season?

I did have a bit of a look though, turns out Hierro scored 21 league goals in 37 appearances in the 1991-92 season, amazing.

But anyway, he puts into words exactly what I get frustrated at when watching Real play. Particularly the bit about Real's centre mids, and how they can't link up with the attack, how there are no surprises, no creativity, and how they "begin and end their moves in the same place without doing anything". Obviously the right wing slot's been a problem ever since...well Figo and Becks, no thanks to guys like Luxemburgo who got rid of all our wingers. Also, what he said about Real players not playing with their first touch and never using the space, watching Liverpool's defensive mids stifle us because of our midfield's inability to use their space was incredibly frustrating.

My God...we need De la Red back desperately
