Robinho - Good As Gone?

By: Steve | July 15th, 2008

Hala Madrid! What up, Madridistas? I feel like I need to throw in a post here and there to take some of the heat from Corey, who’s been doing a ridiculously fantastic job blogging here. I just don’t know how you find the time to do it.

Anyway, as a follow up to Corey’s last post about the Robinho situation, I give you this Guardian article. Here’s a snippet:

Real Madrid were last night considering a bid which sources at the Bernabéu claim is worth €60m (£48m) for the Brazilian playmaker Robinho after the Chelsea chief executive, Peter Kenyon, called Madrid’s sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, to increase a €40m offer first tabled last Friday.

Chelsea’s renewed bid came in the wake of a tense meeting at the Bernabéu yesterday morning in which Robinho, flanked by his agent Wagner Ribeiro, told Mijatovic face to face of his desire to leave Madrid and play under Scolari.

Robinho has been irritated by Real’s attempt to use him as a makeweight in their move for the Old Trafford winger, while the club has refused to offer a contract extension.

“Madrid have failed to value him as he deserves,” Ribeiro said, “and I do not like the fact that they tried to include him in the Ronaldo deal. Money is not the problem for us now. What matters for Robinho is to leave the club and play for Scolari at Chelsea.”

Although Robinho’s absence from the club’s Portuguese get-together yesterday was attributed to his insistence on playing at the Beijing Olympics, that is an honour he would forgo to complete his move to Chelsea.

Well, that sounds like, to me, that Robinho has made up his mind to go and has told Calderon and Mijatovic about it. Something we basically wanted CRon to do but hasn’t.

So we’re potentially left with egg on our face, if CRon doesn’t press his situation and Robinho does. Of course, Calderon’s assertion that “you can’t buy what someone isn’t selling” could still hold for Robinho, but would you want to have him on the squad now?

In this situation, Man U is holding all the cards. First, they don’t want to get rid of CRon, but losing him and having Chelsea get Robinho? Hell no. Sir Alex would probably rather retire than have that happen, so chances are, if Robinho isn’t going to Man U in a deal for CRon, the Portuguese superstar isn’t coming to Madrid.

And if CRon isn’t coming to Madrid, could Robinho still go to Chelsea? It’s possible, maybe even probable at this point (though i’d hate it not least because I only got a Robinho shirt back in April). We already play a lopsided system, with Robben and Robinho both best on the left, and no real right winger (something Balboa could’ve done - wait, he’s in Portugal), and Robben would be worth starting for the half-season he’s healthy. His work with Sneijder in the Euro tournament was hypnotic.

Anyway, from where I stand (sit… at work, though in my defense, it’s lunchtime), Real is in for a world of hurt, one way or another. Their only way out now is to get CRon.

You can really feel the schadenfreude pouring from the Manchester United fans as they read this and ponder over the implications. Calderón’s words about not keeping a player if he really wanted to leave could come back to haunt him with Robinho (even if the quoted figures of 60 million euros from Chelsea would actually make his sale a very good financial deal - he cost 25 million a couple of years ago).

I haven’t really thought through what would happen if CR doesn’t arrive (he’s injured for 3 months now, if this is true we wouldn’t even get him for the start of the season) and Robinho leaves. Is it really such a tragedy in the sporting sense? We do get De la Red back (we wouldn’t sell him in this scenario, I think), Sneijder’s had a cracking Euro tournament, maybe we have enough money for a top striker (Villa?) and Van der Vaart in midfield. What do people think?

I noticed van der vaart played on the right side in the euros - perhaps he is a geniune option at this point.

    Loosing Robinho would be bad.

Van de Vaart is a possibility, but he is really his best in a Guti type role, something that we will most likely use Baptista or Sneijder in this year, and I hope Granero in the future (or Parejo!). Ronaldo does not fit into last years tactics, as we didnt have a dedicated right midfield player, using Sergio Ramos as much as possible. It seems that the arrival of Ronaldo would change the tactics dramatically, but it would unbalance the left side if Robinho left. I am all for keeping Robinho and getting Ronaldo, but if Robinho truely wants to leave we must let him go. As to not go back on our comments about Ronaldo. But I would prefer to keep Robino and add a striker to the squad and call it a day. Ronaldo is good, but the asking price still remains unrealistic.

An Alternative that for some reason RM are not exploring: Ricardo Quaresma. Inter’s chase for him fizzled out. He’s not to CRon’s level but he’s a great talent nonetheless with something to prove against Barca. And he won’t cost the sun, moon and stars

Porto are not willing to let Quaresma go, and since they are back in the CL (what a scam), they dont have to now. I consider Quaresma and Van de Vaart just as much an impossibility as Ronaldo. Mijatovic is a terrible negotiator, so we wont cross our fingers.

diego , any1 ???i think he would b better dan vdv.vdv nd sneijder r too similar.we need a right winger.the left side is quite crowded.robben , robinho nd d forgotten 1 , drenthe.higuain can play on the right but he is really a striker.lets hope he continues wid his purple patch nd doesn´t revert to his can´t-score-to save-his-life state.i am sure there r other right wingers apart frm quaresma nd c.ron .but i would still like to have robinho at d bernabeu.dat crystal glass thing can´t last for more dan 3 matches at a stretch.

I absolutely disagree with the current front office acumen in Madrid. They’re puting one player ahead of the team, and that player’s not even a Madridista. Robben is not a viable starter, and Robinho will prove why Chelsea would bid a ridiculous amount for him. I know I’m kind of beating a dead horse here, but English defenses make Ronaldo look better than he actually is. Robinho could very well become the superstar he’s always claimed he is in the EPL. And so, with a landfill of cash waiting for him and probable superstar status, it’d be kind of silly for him to stick with a team that considers him Transfer fodder.

If Robinho leaves, and Ronaldo doesn’t come (which I’m still hoping is the case) Madrid will regret Balboa and even Granero, doubly. Hopefully the folks in the front office perform head from ass extractions, stat.

Robben’s frail bones are well agknowledged, and Drenthe’s lack of readiness is too. But Calderon said it himself, you can keep a player who is unhappy and wants to leave, so he may be eating his words. Robinho will look like a villan here if he does leave though, because although he claims he wants to play for Scolari, everything I have read said he wants a doubling of his salaries to stay. When you make 2 million a year and your unhappy with that, I consider you to be a prick. So Robinho, whether a Madridista or not next year, is a prick.

corey, when players who are worse than you make more than you and you want a raise to reflect your quality that doesn’t make you a prick, it makes you extremely intelligent. The ‘real’ pricks are those who think C.Ronaldo is going to perform any better than Robinho did with old lame slow forwards(sorry Raul & Ruud) in front of him and no consistent(sorry Guti) ‘real’ midfield distributor to give him the ball in optimum positions. C.Ronaldo is really going to miss Tevez, Rooney & Anderson. C.Ronaldo is going to get very familiar with stealing the ball on defense just to get a decent touch on offense - another Robinho hallmark which he had to way to often because of Madrid’s horrendous offensive midfield play. Because of that void, we need Diego(from Werder Bremen) much more than we need C.Ronaldo.
