Ronaldo Will Not Play In The Derbi

By: Corey | November 4th, 2009

CristianoRonaldo4

I have seen a great deal of speculation on the injury to Ronaldo and his expected return date. Some people had said he would return for the game in Milan, others set his return against Atletico, but no one said it would be later then then. I did not even see him taking this long to recover from what was deemed a minor ankle injury sustained against Olympique Marseille and aggravated playing for Portugal. Real Madrid has assessed the status of his ankle weekly, trying to predict when he would return, but so far there has been no answer.

As of today, Ronaldo has not seen “a clinical improvement of the bone edema in the center of his right ankle” and there fore will not be allowed to train with the first team. He will have to wait until next week when he gets another examination to have any clue as to when he returns, but the length of this injury obviously raises some serious questions. The first being: How could Real a. Not properly diagnose this injury and bar him from playing for Portugal or b. How could the Portuguese medical staff and the federation as a whole not have diagnosed this either?

We can blame Marseille’s Diawarra for the awful tackle, or doctors for misdiagnosis or negligence, or officials of club and country for not looking after the players health, or we can blame Ronaldo for not being smart enough to let himself properly heal from the injury. But then again, is it fair to not permit a player, one of the best in the world, from playing for his country to help in qualification for the World Cup, which is the greatest of tournaments on the planet? I know I would not want to be the one who told him he could not play. It is not worth playing the blame game, as it is in the past and we have to look towards the future.

With Ronaldo out for the derbi madrileno this weekend, and his status still unknown for games beyond that, we have a real problem on our hands here. With Ronaldo brought in this summer for a record fee, some of the alternative players that were sold to make way now are looking like they should have stayed in order to cover for unforeseen injuries just like this. A player like Arjen Robben would have been very handy right now, and my argument for not selling him was simple. Robben himself is injured 40% of a season anyways, so as long as Ronaldo and Robben’s injuries never overlapped, we would have been well covered in wingers and there would not have been any unhappiness in terms of playing time.

Let me know what you think about this latest development to Ronaldo’s injury, and how we should continue to cope in the comments. Also, great stuff on the Milan game yesterday, we got around 240+ comments, which is a new record of second highest after the Liverpool game last year where we had something around 400. I think we can best that this weekend with the derbi, should be a good one. HALA MADRID!

I agree except for the Drenthe part John. When a great team has a weak link in the chain, other great teams can exploit that weak link, which for us is the left back position if Arbeloa is not playing there. I do not care how good a team is, if it has a shitty left back, then lots of chances will come from the left, and the greater the chance for failure. Thats just how football is, a team game. All the players have to be able to play at a certain level with one another and against an opponent, otherwise its gonna be a mess.

I believe villa and aguero are on their way out of La Liga, which is a shame. I myself rate both players much higher than Benzema. Would have preferred them to join rather than Benzema.

As for Ribery, i agree with zizou, maybe a spanish player in his position would be much more welcome. Silva is amazing IMO. Mata would be even better, although he operates on a more attacking front. But right now, dwelling on who might arrive next season is not the topic, as i believe our squad right now should not witness any drastic changes what so ever. Stability is the key. If we do have to get someone, i would suggest a youngster that would not mind having a bench role while at the same time learning from the likes of Ronaldo. There are a lot of young wingers out there.

The derby really scares me, especially with etletico’s display against chelsea. Their difense is weak though, and it would be a shame if we don’t break it down. The 2 center backs are really slow. The full backs though have pace, so it makes you wonder if we should hit them on the break. Attack wise, they have the quality to cause us trouble. The pace of their attack is something that our defense might not cope with, especially with Albiol’s suspension and the possible introduction of the slower Metzelder. Benzema and Higuain should continue to play upfront together, although i do fancy a start for Ruud, who himself fancies playing against atletico.

A win is needed, as any other loss against any other team would be good, but loosing against our rivals is something the fans might take negatively.

    Hala Madrid!

Deepak, Ronaldo won’t undergo a surgery. He just went to Holland to consult the doctor that operated his ankle last year. Hopefully it doesn’t need another surgery cause that will mean 3+ months out.

Atletico…we’ll have to play like the 1st half with Milan and NOT like against Sevilla. Dominate the mildfield, win possession and we will definitely score 1-2 goals. Atletico are good with the ball on their feet and on open spaces and they can shoot from distance too.

Ronaldo is a huge loss for the side, hopefully he is not out for much longer as we are missing a spark in the midfeld

Yer Mata is good also, but he plays on the left and we don’t need anyone there now, Silva would be best.

oh no Ronaldo is not getting better…

Vdv not getting any time is anoying!, i’m 99% sure Raul will start on saturday, but we won’t be able to play the same formation against Atletico that we did against Milan if he plays :(

Deepak your story probably originates from the well known medical journal ‘Marca’ who have deemed that he is definitely out for a month minimum, if the Dutch guy doesn’t decide to operate. Marca radio have also said that Madrid will withdraw from using ‘Sanitas’ as their medical services provider due to misdiagnosis causing this past month’s rehab time to have served for nothing.
AS however just say he’s gone to see the Dutch expert and to wait and see and their resident medical expert says that oedemic swelling typically takes a long time to heal.
They (AS) have gone into a frenzy about the fact that he will still be selected by Portugal for their own med exam and may be deemed fit to play, perfectly allowable according to FIFA rules article 4
So let’s just hold our breath and wait and see….

Zizou, the papers here are saying Raúl makes the starting 11, citing the fact that historically he’s always lucky against Altético, also Guti makes selection

ahhh i see Guti is back, thats means we’ll play a 4-3-3 yer with Benzema and Higuain, and Raul in the middle, and the 3 mids of Guti, Alonso, Lass am i right? i don’t mind Raul playing, i’m 1 of his fans but we should play how we did vs AC.

Hey Corey or anyone. I have asked this before, Why have we sold David Moreno to Almeria? He doesn’t even play in their main team! Seeing his videos (eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqldzJduLNM) and reading his rave reviews everywhere (joinfutbol and other random blogs), I think he is very skilled, so is there any chance of him coming back?

Deepak: Marca is not always correct. Let me rephrase that. Marca is rarely ever correct.

David Moreno was a talent when he was 16 sure, but the year Almeria was promoted he signed with them (as well as Negredo and Nieto) after refusing to sign a deal with Real because he wanted to be in the Castilla team at 16. As you may know, not even the cream of the crop like Victor Merchan, Pablo Sarabia, Derik Osede, Denis or Samu is in the Castilla team yet (well Samu appears for them on occassion). Moreno moved to Almeria where he was promised a professional deal and he would start out with Almeria B. Three years later and he has yet to make a first team appearance. Real Madrid’s coaching staff either knew something everyone else didnt, or he was just a flash in the pan teen prodigy. There are many of those, like Roberto Trashorras, David Aganzo, David Barral, Gorka and Thaer to name a few big name youngsters who played for Real’s youth teams but never ended up doing much of anything. Aganzo and Barral have played in La Liga which is good for them, and Gorka is still with the youth teams, but he is with the C team right now despite being 20. Not looking good for him.

AS has Ronaldo returning in time for Camp Nou. He’ll go back in two weeks to Amsterdam to get a check-up on his progress. Madrid should have sent a doctor with Ronaldo when he aggravated the injury further.

Isn’t Osede only 15(or perhaps 16)? Surely 15-16 is too early for the Castilla! But I wish we could make an exception for Pablo Sarabia!

Corey, I am waaaaay to curious about our youth teams, could you tell me some sites where I could some real info about our young players. I have lost faith in joinfutbol after reading your reply, because they rate Moreno’s progress as a 5/8 (which is very good considering Diego Capel and Mata have 7/8!)

Sorry Deepak if I misled you, I was being tongue in cheek with my comments on the rag Marca
Have just read the article in the Guardian saying this recent ankle injury is the same as the one that was operated on in 2008, yet here they say the opposite, does anyone know?

Deepak: I read about Castilla, C and Juvenil teams at JoinFutbol (http://www.joinfutbol.com/). I also visit http://www.airfutbol.com/web/ and read Marca, AS, Sport and Mundo Deportivo daily. The Real Madrid official site in Spanish has more up to date news on the cantera. As far as a good site for just Real Madrid cantera, I have never found one.
