Ruud Out For the Season!

By: Corey | November 13th, 2008

I woke up this morning to some very bad news, and amongst my screaming profanity, I woke my girlfriend up which she didnt like. But, this bad news is that Ruud may be out for the remainder of the season after doctors detemined his knee problem would require surgery. This is what the official website had to say about the surgery:

”The estimated time he will be out is from six to nine months, depending on the recovery.”

”Following an exploratory arthroscopic operation on Wednesday, it was determined that Ruud van Nistelrooy had a partially torn meniscus in his right knee.

”Real Madrid’s medical staff, Dr Steadman and the player decided to surgically repair the damaged knee.”

Not good news at all, considering we have the waste-of-space Saviola as back up. We now have 4 fit strikers in the first team, with only Higuain being truely on form, although Raul’s hat trick against Irun means he has some assemblence of goal scoring shape. Alberto Bueno also scored, so we should so more of him this season, which is good because he deserves his chance. But, the question is, can we survive until the winter break when a temporary striker (or full time who know) can be brought in to alleviate the load? Early reports link us with Mario Gomez and Carlos Tevez, two decent options, but I think we will be fine until the break and look to sign someone really good, but we will see. Whats your opinion?

Terrible! Worst thing to happen for Real yet. Think of all the possibilities.

New striker, an able replacement would cost loads.
If new striker is a success, it’s probably the end of Ruud’s/Raul’s Career.
Raul led attack? Slow! Without the effectiveness of Ruud, not good not good.

Only plus points is that Bueno and higuain will get more playing time and Higuain can blossom into the world class act that we all want him to be.

I’m confused which is better. Nevertheless Get well Ruud

Really sad coz since Ruud arrived at madrid he has been our top goal scorer. His goals will be missed but hopefully Higuain can fill in and carry on his outstanding form. I think Bueno will be a decent replacement until the winter market opens. There are already rumours going around as to who might arrive but Mario Gomez for me is rubbish. I remember seeing him in the Euros for Germany and he sucked. Arshavin would be a better option. Personally i would like Tevez he has a good work rate and never stops running for the team.

Diego Milito! not cup tied either, he’d be a great replacement, quick and skilful on the ball, and pretty good in the air. But I can just see Mijatovic + Calderon doing something stupid like shelling out 30 million on someone like Drogba (Chelsea would take it, he’s far too injury prone recently and he’s 30 too)

This is REALLY REALLY sad news for Real Madrid, especially at a time like this: when we need that reliable goal scorer and mature presence in the dressing room.

Some names mentioned as temporary replacement / reinforcement so far:

-Andrei Arshavin (Neither a winger, nor a goalscorer, Cup-tied, will cost a bomb, and seems to have an attitude)

-Klaas Jan-Huntelaar (Proven goal-scorer, only 25, might cost a lot of money and might become the reason to not go for Benzema in the summer, not Cup-tied)

-Julio Cruz (Old, Cup-tied I think, but seemingly reliable, won’t mind being on the bench once we bring in a young guy like Benzema in the summer, might be worth it if price is right… clearly a stop-gap measure)

-Hernan Crespo (same as Cruz, not Cup-tied, will likely be cheap since his falling out with Mourinho at Inter, proven scorer, a clear stop-gap measure too)

-Didier Drogba (Cup-tied, expensive, Injury-prone, Old, but would be a destroyer of defenses when healthy and on-form, I don’t think he’s worth it, Chelsea will be unwilling to sell given that he & Anelka are their only choices up front)

-Mario Gomez (not Cup-tied, age is alright, can score in the Bundesliga but was terrible in the Euros, I’m not sure if he’s worth the 15-20m Euros they say he will cost if we’re not even sure he’s a Real Madrid-calibre player)

-Diego Milito (29, not Cup-tied, proven goal-scorer in La Liga, I think he’d be a good buy if he’s not expensive, I’m not sure if he’s injury-prone, seems reliable enough for the rest of the season and the early part of next season where we can bridge the learning curve for whomever we might bring in as a long-term replacement up front.)

I suppose it’s obvious now that I’m really hoping Benzema joins us in the summer… and I view this winter’s striker-signing as an ‘interim’

For the meantime, I really hope that Schuster gives Alberto Bueno more chances and the Castilla player REALL proves himself worthy of the white shirt. If he can, maybe we won’t need a striker signing this January…

Diego Milito has been fucking lighting up Serie A, but he loves Genoa and I’m not sure he’d leave now.

I really think we should get Huntelaar, think for the future, this season is already a waste, we don’t have a decent team to challenge for either La Liga nor the Champions League, but I know that Calderon and Mijatovic in all their “wisdom” (if you can call it that) will go overboard and end up overpaying for a stop gap in the winter market…

    Take care everybody

PS: Corey, did you receive the photos???

I’ve just read that Huntelaar is currently injured and that he will cost something like 35m Euros. If he’s injured, then that’s not really a solution then.

We need a striker who needs no time to adapt to La Liga and the Champions League.

I agree with Cesar though that price should/will be an issue. But somehow, something tells me that we can’t avoid paying a ridiculous amount because the whole world knows that Real Madrid is desperate for a striker. If price is a criteria, then perhaps Hernan Crespo, with his expiring contract and fallout with Mourinho (again) is the best choice…. but at 33, I’m not so sure he is.

Milito is the early favourite here in Italy (Cruz isn’t going anywhere), but the thought is that Genoa will hold up Madrid for all the cash they have, as it is obvious that the Merengues are desperate.

Crespo is definitely available, but he is a very different player than RvN.

    Have you considered Adriano?

Adriano will be like the ugly last days of R9. He hasn’t sorted himself out yet and can be a poison to the dressing room with his drinking and partying. He’s a big risk, the payoff would be incredible though if we manage to land a sorted out Adriano… but I find it unlikely.

Someone at Marca suggested Michael Owen (believe it or not)… I’m sort of going ‘why not?’ given his strike rate when he was with us. But he’s already injury prone. Plus, will he even wanna come back?

As for Milito’s price, perhaps RM can use Saviola as bait in a part exchange deal? Then they can promote Alberto Bueno from Castilla to a bench role.

As someone who has seen every home match that Adriano has played over the last 3 seasons, I have to say that is a very accurate description of the potential risks and rewards.

A part exchange deal is very unlikely to tempt Genoa. Milito is an absolute hero there and the only way that management could try to deflect the firestorm of criticism a sale would engender would be to note that they got enough cash to rebuild the other parts of the team.

Genoa haven’t done much in the last 25 years, but they are still far from a small club in terms of support or financial resources. Milito is not going to be at all easy to get (though it would be easier for them to sell him to a non-Italian club, just as that is reportedly one of the conditions being applied to any sale of Adriano).

Corey - “some assemblence of goal scoring shape”? what exactly are you expecting from Raul - a hatrick every game? Raul so far has a great score record this season and last - 8 so far.
I really don’t understand why people want to shit on one of the best and most dedicated players we have. This guy scores more than Robinho ever did at Real and Man City, yet people miss Robinho.

Surprized no one has mentioned Villa, Benzema or Tevez as they all in the frame for the job and are top of my list. They have more pace and versatility than Huntlaar (although not as good in the air). Villa would be hardest to sign admittedly. Ashavin would be great, but I don’t see him as a centre forward.
Owen would be a nightmare come true - we would be a laughing stock - he’s already a national joke.

My preference would be Villa, Tevez then Benzema

Villa is great, but it’s impossible to get him. our biggest mistake(i think), we should singed him before EURO.
Benzema is not possible now but he’ll be available at the end of the season. and all European biggest clubs are going for him. Hope we can get him.
Tevez, surely Fergie won’t allow him to move on winter break whether he’ll sign him or not.
I prefer a young bright prospect(maybe from S.America) like when we signed Higuain. but it takes time and we need s1 now.

Villa in january = impossible , tevez = cup tied , benzema = impossible as well milito I don’t thin k will be moving either and adriano as madridista mac pointed it out will be prolly be another ronaldo so the best move we could make is buy someone from south america ( falcao maybe ) like we did with marcelo , gago and higuain 2 years ago

Also we need a right winger word is that elano is unhappy at city maybe we should move for him he can play as a right winger ( very good at it ) and a 10

Crespo is currently our best option, He’s cheap, proven, reliable, he will be offered a 6 month contract, If he plays more than the required 20 matches he will be offered a one year option. We can’t go wrong with that.
    ———-
Right now i would much perfer if we sign a right winger, were down to one winger Drenthe, and we have currently lacked the creativity and Width and Ramos needs the support out there, although I would much perfer if he played as a CB and we purchase someone like Dani Alves, who can solve the creativity issue, the Ramos issue and the width issue.

p.s. Our fetish with these Dutch player are getting out of hand, we’ve spent over 120ME and not one star just specsilists and experts. Luckely Higauin stepped up and filled the void of Robinho, Or we would be Real(-ly screwed) Madrid.
