Sergio Ramos is a Blanco for Life!
By: Dancy | September 3rd, 2008Hola Madridistas! I’m Dancy, the new co-blogger for Real Offside, and I will soon be bringing you live blogs for each game! But first, for all the Sergio Ramos fans out there, we have great news: he is set to become a Madridista for life!!

After Robinho left because of salary and “pride” issues, I’m so glad to see Sergio being recognized for what he brings to the club, and treated accordingly. That means Real Madrid will offer him a new 10 year contract, until he is 32, effectively signing him for life. He will join Raul, Guti, Van Nistelrooy, Casillas and Salgado as Real-for-life members. The salary is believed to be £6 million euros net, which is after tax. I’m so happy for you, Sergio! You totally deserve it!!!
It’s also great to hear that the club is finally coming up with a plan to recognize and develop the young players on its squad. After 19 new signings in the past 2 or 3 years, it’s time to settle down and build commitment and chemistry with this team. Here’s the article from Goal:
Madrid To Offer Ramos Ten-Year Deal
The 22-year-old has already become a firm favourite at the Bernabéu and has pledged never to state that he wanted to leave like Robinho did earlier this week. While the Brazilian left because he was not granted talks over a new contract until after he felt unwanted, Ramos is being made to feel like a future club captain.
Iker Casillas has already been lined up to take the armband in 2011 when Raúl’s current contract ends and he is expected to retire from the game, but Ramos will be his understudy.
Along with the Andalucian defender, Madrid believe that they need to have a core of players upon which to build a squad that will keep them at the top for the next few seasons. That list includes Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Rafael Van der Vaart, Pepe, Ezequiel Garay (who will join next summer), Gonzalo Higuaín, Fernando Gago, Marcelo, Javi García, Miguel Torres, Rubén De la Red, Iker Casillas and Ramos.
All those players will be the bedrock, but only the veterans have been in line for a contract-for-life with Raúl, Guti and Van Nistelrooy having been signed up.
Now Ramos is set to become the youngest member of that elite group under Ramón Calderón’s plan and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic has already opened talks with his agent and brother, René Ramos.
“We will offer him a nine or ten year deal so that the boy can have a clear idea that his professional career will finish here,” Mijatovic stated.

It’ll be done very quickly if the money is right. He’s a rock star in Spain and a great Spanish posterboy for the club.

Its a good move, and one we have been expecting.

Would a deal like this really be in the player’s interest? Who knows what could happen in 10 years. Will his salary increase at a competitive rate?

Good question Martin, and its a detail that has not been released. There is a similar deal for a player on the New York Islanders, something like a 9-11 year contract, I believe their goalie. I would assume that every two/three years the salary is adjusted based on performance and other accesorials. But until the deal is signed, we wont know much.
As for Sergio Ramos’ interest, it secures his long term future, which he wants, and his pay is already pretty high, so I dont think he will complain to much.

Still there is a question of motivation in that kind of deals, in a way it may motivate the player for being settled, but ironically being settled may cause him lack of motivation.

Just because we are offering him such a deal doesnt mean that we will honour it. I mean its football, things change FAST!! so If we ever feel he is lacking motivation we can sell him.
as for the salary, im sure he will make more money every 2 – 3 years cos its insane to think he will be paid one flat rate for the next 10 years!!

if he accepts dat deal ,it would effectively lock him in wid d club meaning he can’t leave until or unless d club decide to let him go.i guess d salary would b revised every 2 yrs based on d performances.nd dat means he can’t use d webster ruling.
