Sevilla Preview
By: Corey | December 6th, 2008Real Madrid take on Sevilla in a top of the table clash this Sunday at 3pm eastern time at the Santiago Bernabeu. This is a vital clash for both sides, Real want to stay close to leaders Barcelona while Sevilla want to stay in European places with the likes of Atletico and Deportivo breathing down their neck. It will be interesting clash, with Real looking, well how do I put this? Gutless as of late to say the least, while Sevilla have been playing pretty well, despite the 3-0 loss to Barca, for which Luis Fabiano will be suspended for this game due to a red card.
Historically Real has a very good home record against Sevilla, and will look to continue that tradition on Sunday. Three points for Los Merengues is of the utmost importance to thier title challenge as they will need to keep pace with Vilarreal and Valencia while staying in touching distance of Barca before El Clasico. I personally can see Barca dropping points to Valencia, but with all the financial uncertainties that have crept up again around the Mestalla, will those lads have the stones to brush it aside and fight for 3 points? I dont really know, but I will say that Real’s players have not been in much of a fighting mood this year so this title could be Barca’s to win if they stay consistent enough.
But I have not given up hope on Real challenging for honors just yet. Despite a horrific injury list and some pretty miserable displays, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Real has yet to kick in to full gear and start ripping teams apart like they did in 3-4 spurts last year. Which means that it is bound to happen at some point, and when it does, we will be close to Barca and ready to pounce. That’s my great hope, and until now it seemed like it would happen at any time. But with all the injuries, it needs to happen now, as games against Sevilla and Barca will go a long way to deciding the title.
Real Madrid News:
I posted a list of all the injuries a few posts back. There is alot, but Cannavaro, Robben and Higuain all trained this week and will most likely be available for selection. Whether that is from the bench or not is yet to be seen, but my guess is that Canna and Higuain start, and Robben starts on the bench. Saviola scored against Getafe, but he and Raul were pretty poor, but we all know that Raul will always get the nod over Saviola to partner Higuain. Whether it makes sense tactically and form-wise or not.
With Torres re-injured, Sergio Ramos will move back out to the right side, which works well because Cannavaro is gonna step back into the center back role. And we will have Marcelo at left back, with only Metzelder and Salgado as defensive reserves. We have a full staff of defenders, but with injuries to Torres and Heinze, we loose our two utility players. The long term injury to Diarra has still not been declared as needing surgery, usually on Saturdays the medical report is submitted and my guess is we will know then. EDIT: Diarra will be out for 3 months, not the whole season, which is a good thing. Gago and Javi Garcia are the only fit central midfielders in the team, defensive or not, so I expect Gago to start. Javi Garcia may partner him in the center to shield the defense, which would allow Gago to stroll forward a little more often and distribute from beyond the center circle.
If Javi Garcia is not played, he will of course be on the bench and will see time towards the end of the game. Guti would be a smart third addition to that midfield permutation, but Schuster will look to take the game to Sevilla at the Bernabeu, so I expect Guti and Van der Vaart to start in the midfield. Guti’s rather disappointing performances are due to his increased defensive responsibility and his lack of freedom when moving forward. Van der Vaart should justify his selection with a creative display where he is the link between the winger/forwards and the rest of the team. Again, his positioning has not always allowed for his best performances, but even so, we should be seeing more from him.
I think Drenthe will start again, because he has done better every game, even though he still cant cross to save his life nor dribble past a defender without relying heavily on his speed. But there has been minor improvement, and thats really all we can ask from him. Robben will see time no doubt, he is our offensive spark and only starts on the bench due to his frail nature and Schuster’s need to instill confidence in Drenthe by not yanking him out of the team the second Robben is fit. That may go a long way with Drenthe, but we all know Robben will start against Barca as long as he is fit.
Raul and Higuain will dovetail up front, which actually is not all that bad. Higuain’s natural penchant for pulling defenders out wide will help Drenthe and Sergio Ramos with some of the wing play. It also means there is space for Van de Vaart to run into the box and Raul has space to operate. But most importantly, Higuain can run the channels as well which again allows Raul plenty of space. What I have noticed recently is that when Raul drops deep for a ball, he rarely ever has time to turn and feed his strike partner. That use to be his game, where he would get the ball to Morientes/Ronaldo/Suker etc and then run around like a mad-man until he got free and was fed through for a shot. That needs to return, how that happens I dont know.
With that being said, my key to the game will be exploiting the wings as usual. Spanish football, if you have not noticed, is a very patient, technical game where control is won and lost in the center of the field. Which ever team can out possess the other team will undoubtedly create more chances, and then have a higher percentage to win the game. This forces the other team to counter attack, something that Barca has been doing this year, although they sort of dont give up the ball which works well too. So when Sevilla and Real play, the game will be decided by who has the midfield control. BUT! The wing play will create chances because the midfield play is gonna be crowded as hell, and thats where the key is.
Sevilla News:
Manolo Jimenez rotated his squad a bit for the Partizan tie mid-week, well aware of the Real game approaching. He still got a good result, so that goes to show Sevilla has quality in depth. That being said, it is hard to pin point exactly who will start for Sevilla. It seems that Jimenez likes a French center back pairing in Squillaci and Escude. I know Squillaci well as I am also an avid Lyon fan and saw him play many times. He is beatable, especially on the ground, where he finds himself in knots all to often before he throws himself into a rash tackle. Escude is the more calm of the two, with good positioning but a rather tame tackler. Neither of them is exceptionally good in the air, but that does not really matter much against us.
Drago may come in to the team if Jimenez feels that Squillaci is not up to speed for the Real attack. But considering the anemic attack we have that may be a bit over board. The reason why is that Fazio is being used as the defensive midfielder now and he is more of a center back anyways, so Jimenez may weigh the pro’s and con’s of that. David Navarro will definately be at left back, and I would assume Mosquera at right back. Drago can slot in to either RB or LB, but my guess is that he could come in at RB for Mosquera. Like I said, Jimenez shuffles his pack often so who really knows.
Fazio will be the DM unless there is a reason to play Duscher. Maresca should be his midfield partner, and again, this is unless there is a reason to play Romaric. The center midfield pairing is not really what worries me though, its their wingers. I have long sang the praises of Jesus Navas, who I want Real to sign so badly as our right winger. Di Maria be damned, Navas is exceptional. And he will give Marcelo a torrid time of it if he is in the mood. The same can be said of Diego Capel, who always gives Sergio Ramos a tough time, them being local lads and friends. I am sure if Capel is not getting the better of Ramos he will switch wings with Navas for a bit to give it a go at Marcelo, but they tend to stay on their sides.
The space they create from their direct running means that a center back is constantly pulled out to help cover them. This means Gago picking up runners into the box is absolutely essential. With Fabiano suspended and Kone injured, Jimenez does not have alot of strikers to choose from. Kanoute will start, and my guess is that Renato may be behind him in an attacking role. It seems the most probable thing, but he could also throw someone else out their I am not aware of. I think Chevanton is injured as well.
Game time is 3pm eastern tomorrow, we may have a live blog from Steve, but if not you can comment on the game here. HALA MADRID!

The cantera will collectively celebrate Calderon (hopefully) losing his job later this month…this can’t come soon enough. As much as it sucks right now, I’m surprisingly excited to see what direction the club takes after this tumultuous month. At least we’ll have a new manager, if not club president, so who knows what’ll happen. Maybe we’ll decide we want to use the cantera to build talent instead of storing it away to never use it. I can’t say I’m surprised about losing today, so I guess I’m not disappointed. More hopeful for the future than anything and enjoying the NFL a lot more than last year haha.

The President got the majority vote of confidence today, so he’ll continue until next year but Eugenio Martinez Bravo seems like an intresting Candidate unlike that other guy who seems very desprate.
I think Schuter might continue though. I hope Mijatovic gets sacked if Schuster does.

Julien G-
Did they take the vote before or after the game? hahaha i think i already know that answerPosted from

Julien G I hope you’re right
I was just watching the replay of the game and just remembered that higuain should have had a pen and hit the post as well so did robben so Not only do we suck but we are also very unlucky ….just great having said tho our performance in the second half was something to be proud of gotta admire the team’s fighting spirit I think that it if wasn’t for robben’s sending off we would have won this game we were pissing all over sevilla up to that point Palop has got to be the man of the match
As for calderon and mijatovic lol lets get real these two bitches will be there even after next year the madridistas in spain aren’t really doin anything if I were there at the moment I would bring signs that reads ” OUT mijatovic , OUT calderon” everytime I go to the stadium in order to start a movement against them

Ouch. Dudes, Salgado/Torres in one on one situations vs. Messi is NOT a good match up for Real. Then again, Marcelo ain’t a good one either.
Sucks about Robben. Definitely like him as a player and would have wanted to see his match up with Alves/Abidal next week. Seems like ol Bernd has had the most success this season running his offense through the wingers (penetrating and/or feeding crosses into the area). No Robben is a big hit to that. Drenthe cant compare and taking Higuain from the central area is a huge waste IMO.
That ref was horrible and this is coming from a Cule. Then again, if Iker and Cannavaro go give up two very soft goals to begin with, it wouldn’t have mattered.

People were calling for calderon to resign today according to As , some even went as far as calling him and some other members “anti madridistas sons of bitches ” and this was before the game so imagine how they must feel right now lol that ugly ass motherfucker is finally getting what he deserves I hope the fans keep harassing him until he resigns

Word is that Calderon paid off the Ultras to invade the meeting, taking up members’ seats and insulting or intimidating anybody who spoke against Calderon. AS mentions it but Marca (the definition of propaganda) glosses it over.

To all those of you moaning about the ref – what about last weeks game where the ref was wearing white – that has to be the most bais ref performance I have ever seen.
You have to accept that ref decisions are a part of the game.
Let’s face it ordinarily this would not be the worst loss for us would it, Sevilla are a good side afterall – I thought we put up a good fight and made it an exciting match. I nearly cried with joy when Gago scored his first ever goal! The fact is we can’t defend at all – what new? It’s been like that all season (even last as well) and we’ve been getting away with it.
I’m glad – something will get done about it now.

You have to admire the team spirit, even if we can’t defend.

Evo, I typically don’t support ref bashing in the wake of a loss – the team wins or loses, and poor officiating usually goes both ways. But the call on Robben is incredibly problematic. We desperately need him if we’re to put up a fight against Barcelona, and the sending off precludes that. And you have to admit, that was an unfair booking. It will most likely be over ruled by midweek, however.
I agree that it was excellent to watch the team get fired up and start playing for once. It’s a reminder of what this squad is capable of if they can be bothered to show some effort.
All season I’ve been reflecting on what a difference Guardiola has made in Barcelona. One of the most remarkable differences between the Barca of last year and the current leaders of La Liga is their motivation. Pep has them playing all out for no less than 90 minutes. They are relentless and endlessly motivated. As several people have mentioned in this post’s comments already, it is disparaging to watch Schuster sulk on the bench throughout every single game. It is clear that he’s doing very little to motivate the players and give them the confidence they need to play like champions. I’m not waiving my white hanky yet, but I’ve taken it out of my pocket.

LOL. This forum sucks ass. Corey and steve are jokes, they are absolutely pathetic. They only bother to create articles when madrid win, notice that when madrid lose or draw they dont bother. Corey is so neglectful and most of his threads start off with” im gonna make this one fast” or “its gonna be short”. Steve is even worse. Most of the time he is late for his liveblogs. Against Espanyol he was late, against Juventus he was late, and the idiot started a thread for the getafe game and said he will come back to post but he forgot. Im sorry but how the hell does a madrid fan forget ANY game, even copa del rey. But this joker missed a juventus match, the biggest game of the season. He forgot, LMFAO. Hes not a real fan.

For being such a scathing critic of this forum, you seem to know quite a bit about it, which might suggest you’re a regular reader. Too much free-time then?

Just keep ignoring that “I hate madrid ” fool he is an attention whore

Im sorry I’ve got to say something.
@I hate Madrid: Hey I appreciate your enthusiasm. And I don’t know who you support but I’m a Cule. And As much as I dislike Madrid I’ve found that the bloggin at this site isn’t bad at all. Corey and Steve (though lost souls and rooting for the wrong team) put up entertaining and usually objective posts. As far as I know they do it for free and usually are very funny (when not ranting about a madrid win or Barca loss)and the mere fact that they take up the time to do it is proof of their (MISPLACED):-) love for the EE. I hope that if you are a fellow cule you don’t give us all a bad name.@John: as much as I have seen refs favour Madrid I have to say that was a bad call. It was a foul but I just don’t see it given that often. Not like that anyway. Keep in mind though that a sevilla player made a similar play and also got a yallow. Maybe finally the ref just used the same standard. Don’t look at it as a red. Look at it a yellow, did he deserve a yellow. A ref should not consider if the player is already booked or not. I must say though I prefer that he be at the Clasico and hopefully Madrid appeals and it is recended.

Just got back from Cyprus, couldn’t watch the game there, good for me though, I would’ve been very pissed off after watching that match…
I don’t think Schuster’s comments are going to cost us the game against Farza; in any case, I think that’s just him trying to motivate the players, so we’ll see how it goes…
And to you, “I hate Madrid”, I know plenty of barcelona fans, and I have to tell, you have no class, and if I were a cule, i would be ashamed of having a pig like you amongst my fellow supporters; GO BACK TO THE BARCELONA FORUM, WE DON’T WANT YOUR STUPID POSTS IN OUR FORUM!!!
To the Madridistas, are any of you in London, and if so, are you planning on meeting up and watch next week’s game??? If you are, plase let me know, i would like to join you guys
HALA MADRID!!!
PS: Steve and Corey, thanks for everything you do for us madridistas!!!

Tomatutomate – fair points. I’m just really sore that Robben will miss El Clasico.
Cesar – I just missed you: I was in London when Madrid played Getafe. Shucks. And though I certainly understand your sentiment, Corey and Steve have always been really open and welcoming to everyone and anyone. So…
i hate madrid – You’re more than welcome to comment here. But all of us who enjoy this space for the discussion and insight in the posts/comments will take issue when the people who spend the time, unpaid, to update and contribute and spark conversations are targeted with general nastiness. So please don’t hurl insults at them.
i hate prats – it IS rather peculiar that someone spends so much time reading things he despises.

Hey, should I go ahead and pay for coverage for el clasico – I mean…will you guys have enough to field a full 11?
In all seriousness though, Barcelona’s offense is scary good, and they have world class on both flanks and through the center. I’m not sure you guys have fielded the same back four for two games running yet this season, and that lack of continuity kills any chemistry. Don’t be so hard on Schuster, because I don’t know of any coaches who could be successful under the current circumstances – and definitely don’t put too much stock in what he might say in press conferences – you don’t know (maybe you do, but if you’re basing your comments on what you read him say or hear him say on tv, then you don’t) what goes on behind closed doors or in training. You do realize that some coaches say certain things to play mind games with the other team – sometimes a coach may feign weakness going into a game with a big opponent to encourage overconfidence and recklessness. Bernadine may not be on Mourinho’s level (no one is, really), but that’s something to think about, before you assume he’s “given up.”

You’re right John, it’s just that I’ve just arrived from a long trip, my wife and kid are a little sick, and on top of all I have to deal with yesterday’s defeat, and the “posts” of people like “I hate Madrid”, but you’re right, Steve and Corey welcome everybody, so I guess “I hate Madrid” should be welcomed under “anything”, so there you go, we welcome “everybody and anything”, and that means you, “I hate Madrid”

I do not worry about people criticizing me, if they dont like what I do or they think im to neglectful then they should start their own blog. The best thing to do guys is to ignore people like that, but Steve and I do allow everyone and anyone to say what they want in the comments.
As for the Barca match, I am a little nervous Shingi, because yes Barca has a scary attack, but they have a scary team in great form right now. Also, Schuster is still given credit, I havent called for his head yet, but sometimes he just looks like he wants to be put out of his misery.
Great comments as usual everyone, keep up the good work!

Also, I will admit I have had some motivation problems lately with the blog. When things are not going as well with the team its hard to want to write much. That and I am going on a year and a half now, I have started to slow down a bit, but I am sure with a nice winter break ahead of me I will be able to recharge the batteries and get back to work.

Real Madrid have a great opportunity in this next game. With all the injuries and bad defensive form we aren’t really expected to win by the neutrals; especailly against a Barca side that is looking so strong.
There has to be a huge amount of confidence at camp nou before this game – maybe that will make them over confident. But really the pressure is all on them to perform.Posted from

Many thanks and respect to Corey, Cesar, john, and the balanced cules like Tomatutomate and andrew. It’s been a tough few weeks for me, work-wise and otherwise, this past weekend I was visiting friends in Stuttgart, so I didn’t have access to the match. Tomorrow I’ve got a Christmas party so I won’t be able to liveblog the CL match either, which I’m gutted about because I do enjoy doing it, and I really appreciate all the support you guys bring, even if you’re cheering against us.
So to the wankers and shit-disturbers like i hate Madrid, fuck off. All you’ve done is make cules look bad and united the Madridistas even more against you. I’m sorry I have a life outside of football, but if that’s the price I pay to have friends and go out to parties and all that shit, so be it. You can get your kicks all you want by coming here and trying to get us riled up, but you’ve only proven yourself as a pathetic little whiner. Grow a pair of balls and start your own damn blog.
