Squad for Frankfurt
By: Corey | August 11th, 2008With France kicking its league program off this past weekend and England and Germany ready to this upcoming weekend, I am getting the itch finally. I was pretty peaceful all summer with not football because my weekends were occuppied with the beach, drinking and back yard sports. But I fear that these favored past times will be replaced by days of football, which I guess is fine because thats what is most important. But we still have to wait another three weeks for Real to start the league campaign off, although the Supercopa will come soon enogh.
Until competitive football returns to the Iberian, we have lame friendlies to enjoy, like this Tuesdays date with Eintracht Frankfurt, a replay of the infamous 1960 final in Hampden that finished 7-3 to Real, for their fifth straight European Cup. What a magnificent night that was, I have watched it on DVD before, as it is part of the learning curve for any Real fan. Dont expect the same sort of match on Tuesday though, but thats fine.
Here is the squad list, which is basically all players except the injured Canna and Wesley and the Olympics boys:
Goalkeepers
Casillas, Dudek, Codina
Defenders
Salgado, Heinze, Torres, Pepe, Ramos, Metzelder
Midfielders
Diarra, Guti, Baptista, Robinho, Robben, Van der Vaart, Javi García, De la Red
Forwards
Raúl, Van Nistelrooy, Saviola, Higuaín
You will notice the Felipe Ramos and Chema Anton have returned to the Castilla team, as they will be with their peers for another year. The lack of movement from Codina and Dudek meant Ramos would not have a spot in the team. I found it curious as to why Anton is moved back down, given the injuries and two missing left backs we have right now. Of course Javi Garcia is preferred in the center with Heinze and Torres can play left back, but we still find ourselves short. Maybe he will get the call again with another injury? Metzelder, you have been warned…
As for the friendly in Frankfurt, I am not expecting to much. A runout for our Euro Champions looks likely, and I hope Metz plays as well. Wouldnt hurt him would it? VdV will play his second match for us, while Roninho could use some more fitness and Higuain is returning from a slight knock. Of course the almost rigid discipline Schuster has to his formation and tactics will again be on display, so I am already burned out of the incredibly predicable lineups.
Any one else want the season to start yet?

i for one also cannot wait for the season to kick off. Just wondering if we are gonna purchase another striker. Oh yes about Callejon if Schuster really liked so much why not keep him in the team since we so short of right sided wingers. I know he would not play that much but i dont know any more? I wonder what goes on in Schusters head? What does he really think about our cantera?

It’s interesting that there’s been relatively little talk about transfering ‘the rabbit’ this summer. Even though I’ve given him thorough abuse in the past, Saviola did impress me on a couple occasions towards the end of last season. If he were to work on his positioning…
But I’m not convinced he’s a Madrid class striker. With the transfer window nearing a close, I agree with Donovan that we could use one more class striker to spell Raul and Ruud, as insurance against injuries, and to keep that competitive flame under everyone’s asses - make sure they work for their starts. The hot talk is focusing on Villa and Huntelaar, and even though Huntelaar would probably be a better fit (height, and would accept the ‘either prove yourself or sit down’ situation, whereas I’m not sure Villa would) I’m concerned about the increasing lack of Spanish influence on the team. Any thoughts?

if Huntelaar were to join us we would be the Dutch team! Ur right John we do need more spanish players. If Villa arrives he wouldn’t want to be benched either. I really had hoped Soldado would of gotten a better chance in the first team.

I’d also like to see more of our youth players make the first team, but this is Real Madrid, so being good is not enough, they have to be excellent to be a part of this team.
I’ve liked a lot of the youth players in the past, but when they leave, I know it’s because they’re not good enough to play at the Bernabeu. Look at the last players who ever made it out of la Cantera: Raul, Casillas, Guti, and Eto’o. Those have been the only world class players that we have produced in the last 15 years…
Take care everybody

we do need one more striker.nd i m not a fan of el conejo either.we should sell him.ruud nd raul r both getting on in years nd d 1 striker that we do have after dem is really shy about scoring.yeah, its higuain i m talking about.nd wid baptista on his way out out we don´t have ne cover at all.i would luv more spanish players in d team.don´t wanna end up like arsenal or inter milan.although i like villa a lot i am not sure i want that many prima donnas in the team.if all three r fit nd in form 1 will b benched nd none r very likely to take dat well.i don´t know.all the ones we r luking at have dere own risks.huntelaar, too many dutch.villa , high possibility of strife(he is also sumwat injury-prone).but we gotta sign sum1.dat much is clear 2 me.
