Still Rock and Roll To Me
By: Corey | September 20th, 2007Ive got Billy Joel stuck in my head, which is not a bad thing at all. Now its gonna be stuck in your head.
I forgot to put this up on Monday, heres Phil Ball’s column: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=463801&root=europe&cc=5901
So the Champions League finally kicked off, and to be honest I didnt catch any of the games. I had to go shopping with my lady then we had dinner so I missed ESPN’s coverage completely. So my comments are based on highlights, so if I am a bit off I apologize. Obviously what over shadows the games was the fact that Jose Mourinho was sacked and/or quit. Im not suprised, he wasnt happy with Chelsea not giving him a ridiculous budget to play with this summer. Then again, the guy had an enormous amount of expectation on him which he only partially lived up to. Two league titles and some cups isnt bad, but big Bromavich wanted the CL so there was obviously tension there. Just as long as he stays far away from Madrid I will be fine.
Barca handled Lyon pretty well, and as a Lyon fan I was disappointed, but as a Barca hater I was again disappointed. This is not the place for my feelings on Lyon, Inara covers that very well on her page, so check it out. Sevilla were beaten by Arsenal, and I was a little surprised, they have a good squad but maybe the fact that they are new to the scene means they may struggle to find their feet. The score may have flattered Arsenal a little, and if Kanoute was more clinical it could have been a different game.
Inter going down always brings a smile to my face, as does strippers. The analogy doesnt work though, because Inter is like a whore, who spreads her legs and shoots money out at players. Moving on, the CL is great, great teams slug it out for a cash pinata at the end of it all, and I have to admit, besides the WC and Euro Championships, there isnt anything better. Internationals pale in comparison to this, which is why the club vs country row is so one sided. Im very patriotic, as most footballers are, but the club pays the wages, takes the hit if there is an injury and loose the player for however long.
Here is some Real Madrid news for you hungry readers:
- http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=420404 We had a good comment on the previous post about Gago’s play. Passing terrible, but then again Diarra makes the square pass only, so its still a step up. Id take Diarra over Gago anyways, but Gago’s cultured passing game is something a wiley verteran posses. Give him time, his qualities can show, this was his first start all season, certainly not in top form yet.
- Schuster said he likes Diego. Diego now has a 20-25 million euro price on his head. Schuster says he should stop commentating on players he appreciates because then people assume they will be bought. Duh, of course.
- Juve want to bail on Tiago already. Id take him, he is a “ball washer” as they say in France.
- Robinho’s vagina is bleeding as he is upset at not starting on Tuesday night. Higuain played better then you buddy, get your act together and start producing or your gonna be riding pine more often. Robinho’s vagina agrees, Robinho should put up or shut up.
- Bernd is feeling as if Real Madrid is not the land of milk and honey he thought it would be last spring. He has said that he may not see out his contract because things at Real are different from when he was a player. Yeah they are, you played for Real a long time ago. But he makes a valid point, that Real’s inner core seems to still be a bit rotten, despite the strong start to the season. Maybe Vicente Del Bosque is more then just a coach, he is an angel. He seemed to keep everything together, and rumor has it that he is first in line for the national team job once Fernando Hierro is appointed to the Federation in some ambigious role.

I’ll give Gago time, but that kid better get his act together. I do have to admit the ironic “mission accomplished” tag in the Goal.com article made me laugh a bit.
As for the Schuster comments, where did you hear that? Interesting and disturbing, especially so soon into his career at Real.

I don’t want to get to excited yet, but…
MADRID (Thomson Financial) - Mediapro said it has accepted a proposal by Sogecable SA unit Audiovisual Sport (AVS) to share this season’s Spanish football broadcasting rights under the same conditions as last year.
In a statement, Mediapro said that it had told the Spanish Football League (LPF) that ‘this (decision) does not resolve the deeper problems which are currently under discussion’.
The production company and AVS are currently embroiled in a legal battle over joint exploitation of the football rights, with Mediapro claiming that a contract signed in 2006 is no longer valid.
Under the new agreement, the production company will return to an identical broadcasting schedule as last year’s season for premier league, second division and international broadcasting rights.

Am I mistaken, or does this mean Real Madrid is back in the states?

I think your right John, Madrid will be back. And Schusters comments were made to a yet to be named German media outlet, I got the quote from tribalfootball which is usually very reliable, also transfermarketweb.com had it up as well, they are a little sketchy though. Thanks for putting that up, Forbes isnt a spot where I comb for Real news, but its all good cause you found it. If you guys think im missing stuff post links to your favorite spots for Real or news, or football news in general.
elmeromero- Gago needs patience and an half-sincere pat on the ass, he is still a young kid, much like Marcelo, Torres, Higuain, Drenthe, Balboa and of course Soldado. These players need to play without the fear of being picked apart, it will help there confidence which will progress their game. Such an atmosphere does not exist in Madrid though, which is why Schuster will look to shield Gago with positive comments like those. Schuster is slowly winning me over.
