Team Overview Part II
By: Corey | August 9th, 2007Alright, lets lay down a hot track and do this thing:
Wingers (LW/RW)
1. Robinho- Had a great Copa America. and he just scored a goal yesterday. He will have another strong season as long as he stays consistent and uses the ball wisely. My early season prediction for the clubs player of the year. May play on the left, may see some time up front, may also see some time on the right, versatile is an attractive color. Dodgy music in this video, your fore warned.
2. Reyes Umm, Balboa! Yeah, how many of you Madridistas knew about him? Not to many, but he is pretty good, probably not good enough to start alot but he can improve just like the rest of the young guys. Had a solid year at Santander where they finished well, and he returns to see himself playing in all of the preseason games. I think Schuster likes him alot, as does Portugal, who coached him last year and is not back as technical director. And his dreads are now to be complimented by this other cool cat named Drenthe.
3. Drenthe- Steve put up his officialness, and a delicious video compilation. He may be playing left back alot, but he can also play in the midfield, althought one thinks he may have to choose one or the other eventually. Good signing, another for the future.
4. Higuain- Not really a winger, but he was played there a little in the preseason. He is injured now, so probably Raul and Adrian Gonzalez will get more playing time on the wings. Higuain is more of a striker, but whatver, here is his video. Goal against Atletico, thank you very much, instant hero status.
There are a few young guys not in the first team and i dont really know there status. Negredo, Mosquera etc. are all with Castilla or on loan? Its hard to find info on them, if anyone knows go ahead and post it.
Strikers
1. RVN- Rutgerus was in typical form last year, and if we can get another 20+ goals out of him this year i think we can win the title again. A shame Totti got the Golden Boot, i think thats something that really burns RVN, that he has not won it yet, and he really wants it. So I expect him to do it this year. Sir Alex needs to keep sending his cast aways to us, like ohh i dont know, Cristiano ‘Gay Poster Boy’ Ronaldo. All the goals by Van the Man, your welcome.
Best video yet, Hala Madrid is so on my iPod. And scoring against Barca is instant hero status too.
2. Rauullllllll- El Capitan has been out of it for 3 years now, but with Schuster, he should be playing in the hole where he scored all his goals. Guti is Rauls down fall in some circumstance, because even though they have very different games, they often occupy the same space. But thats a whole other debate, for now, lets say Raul gets 15 goals this year and be positive about it. But the thing is this little Argentian rabbit likes to score goals too so we will knock it down to 10. A Raul video, yeah I had a hard time finding one…pfff. The first goal against Atletico made me cry, I was 7. My hero’s video, dodgy music though.
3. Saviola- Ex-Barca player, cringe. Then again so was Schuster, Laudrup and Figo just to name a few notables. I honestly am only gonna set him at 15 goals, but who knows, he could score 30. He is very similar to RVN, which means im limiting his playing time a bit thus the lower goal production, but he hopefully will bang them in while Van the Man is out. His video is all Barca goals, so grin and bear it, like when you pee cause it burns a bit.
4. Higuain- well we did him already, but he will score more then last year hopefully, or he will fall into the bust category.
5. Alberto Bueno- He scored a few at the u-20 WC, played well. He and Juan Mata had a good understanding but the little bastard went to Valencia so he and Sunny could learn from I guy with the last name of flowers. Gay. Oh well, Bueno is a good young striker, but I dont see him playing unless theres injuries, but he may make a few starts.
Yeah, so why dont we start the buy Deigo Capel from Sevilla campaig now, he is sickness…. Also, Sunny is pretty incredible too, Valencia made two good buys this summer.
6. Soldado- Yeah, so I didnt forget him. The Soldier is back from Osasuna, and you know what, he is not 5th choice, he is actually 3rd in my books. I love him, and he loves the club, he will give his all like Raul, Guti and Segio Ramos. I put him 6th as a trick, he is above Saviola actually because he brings something that neither Saviola nor RVN has, techinical skills coupled with size. I want him to score a buttload, that would be wicked cool. This video is pretty cool, look how cute he was as a 14 year old, uses the outside of his boot alot
Do I have to even mention Cassano. No. Okay good. Thats it for the team overview. Im sure more players will be added, but right now i think the squad is pretty solid, someone on the left is a priority if Drenthe drops back to left back. on the right, id say keep Cicinho and put him in front of Sergio Ramos. Ohh, and lets buy Diego Capl, theres a left winger.

Great overview Corey - I’m on board. I think Drenthe will fair better as a left wing, and as I’ve mentioned I’d also be curious to see how Cicinho would fair at right wing. I like the set up because it puts versatile offensive/defensive players who can apply pressure, hold the midfield (somewhat) and, of course, provide a retreating defensive unit. However, watching the clips from Schuster’s few games thus far, I don’t think Cicinho’s playing style will work with his system. Schuster seems to favor attacking through the middle, whereas Cicinho’s talent is moving up the right line and sending crosses to center. I know Schuster put him out there during the Railway Series, but I think it was marketing. If the right offer comes, Real will sell. And despite all that, if and when Drenthe mans the left wing, Robinho will be on the right, so Cicinho would just be depth to the position (I could go on and on about Robinho, the flashy boy genius who almost always choked at the mouth of the goal last season, but looked to have finally found his cool in Venezuala this summer, but I’ll hold off for now).
On the subject of strikers - what about The Beast? I’ve been in Baptista’s camp for years, and I think he still could prove his stripes. I hope to see a fair amount of him this season. And as far as Higuain is concerned, you can’t deny the impact his fresh legs have in the closing fifteen minutes of a match. He’s a great sub-in, has amazing pace, and as he develops he very well could be an occasional starter. Lastly, I hope you’re right about Soldado. I really do.
Keep up the good work, Corey!

Baptista could be used as a striker, but i think that he will be deployed in midfield more often then not. Higuain does provide fresh legs but his position is in question and his goal scoring prowess has diminished. Soldado will provide a good alternative, but tihout having a strong case to start every game his confidence will suffer and i dont see him making a huge impact except off the bench unfortunately. Drenthe will provide some pace to the left, Balboa sorta played on the left against Deportivo and did well, this team actually has alot of alternative, but is pieces are sold off aka Cicinho it will crumble, while I believe bringing someone like Robben in is not needed if the plan is to attack through the middle. A Van der Vaart would be more suitable, id agree to his signing, but the lose of Cicinho, Emerson would make the team weak in the time of need, so we will see

If Raul scores 15 this year I’ll eat my (nonexistent) hat. For some reason the Madrid press have been trumpeting his comeback for the past 3-4 seasons and it’s never quite materialised. Don’t get me wonrg, he’s a classy player, but he burned out too young and has never quite got it back playing wise. He is an inspirational leader, though, and always gives his all, which is why I think he keeps getting picked for the team, rather than some of the conspiracy theories that claim he has some kind of political power-grip on the squad. Noone survivies through a dozen coaches and presidents for no reason.
