The Best Start In 17 Years?

PORTADA DE MARCA
Shame On You Marca

Yes, we have had our best start since 1991-1992, yet it seems to have fallen on depth ears to many Real Madrid fans. Should we not be excited and optimistic that this team is making significant progress after the disasters of the club this time last year? Not if you read Marca, AS and the rest of the Spanish dailies on a regular basis (umm daily I guess). You would think we were in Atletico’s position, such has been the level of scrutiny of everything Manuel Pellegrini and his team do. Besides outrageously unrealistic expectations placed on the team after bringing in so many high priced players this summer, Real sit top of the league, within qualification of the next round of the Champions League.

A debacle at Alcorcon may have seemed like Armageddon to Marca, and certainly loosing to Sevilla away and Milan at home was grounds for a little bit of speculation, but the constant headlines of Pellegrini being fired etc etc has certainly done no harm to the spirit of the squad and the resolve of the coach. But as the podcast group speculated two weeks ago in our recording, there are clear signs that Marca explicitly has a campaing to get Pellegrini fired and cause havoc in the Real Madrid camp whenever it can. The outrageous headlines and stories the accompany lull periods like international breaks certainly highlight the point.

On the other hand, AS did some thinking for once and decided to lay out just what Pellegrini and this squad has accomplished so far this season. While I have been critical of some of the things Pellegrini has done this year, Id like to say I have been fairly positive, if not realistic when looking at the way the team has played and the results. What I did not ever consider is just how good the team has done historically. An excerpt from AS:

Manuel Pellegrini, technician of Real Madrid, questioned by the lack of style in the game and the fiasco copear before the Alcorcón, find in the numbers its better defense and after reaching the leadership in day 11, it presents/displays the best numbers in League of last the 17 years of the white club. The pírrico triumph of Real Madrid in the stage Santiago Bernabéu before the Racing of Santander (1-0), and the tie of Barcelona in San Mamés before the Athletic Club of Bilbao (1-1), turns to the madridista set in leader after the eleventh day, to one week to visit the Camp Nou in the first chapter of the classic one.

Real Madrid reaches 28 points of 33 possible ones, is the second goleador equipment of the category with 27 so many, two less than Barcelona, and the one that except so many fits, 8 (tied with Barcelona and Seville). The ligueros numbers of the white set in the last represent their better starting of competition 17 years. From season 1991-92, when it signed ten victories and a tie in the eleven first ligueros parties, it did not secure a so high average. This campaign, in three months of competition, the madridista set has only left points in its visits to Seville, where it lost 2-1, and to the Molinón, stage in which tied without goals before the Sporting de Gij’on. Since local it has gained everything what it has played in League in the stage Santiago Bernabéu.

Six parties and plenary session of victories with 18 so many to favor and four against. Iker Squares has left its door to zero in four of those six parties, and in it has done it to the total in seven of the eleven disputed days. In the last League conquered by Real Madrid, with Bernd Schuster like technician in season 2007-08, at this point of season they added 25 points, three less than at present, and the numbers of goals to favor and against also were worse (25 marked by 27 present ones, and 9 fitted by 8). With respect to the last League of Fabio Capello, campaign 2006-07, this Real Madrid has an improvement after eleven days of five points, has marked six so many and equals more in fitted goals. They are the numbers to which always Pellegrini in press conference is taken hold to defend its work over the game.

Id like to know what everyone thinks of the team’s performances this season so far, but also how people truly feel about the kind of ‘yellow journalism’ that is so prevalent at Marca and to an extent AS. I for one had a bit of a panic when we went down to Alcorcon, but with careful consideration you have to realize that a squad of reserves and bench players had one of the nights that makes football such an unpredictable sport. With the exit from the Kings Cup though, we will be completely focused on the two other titles still in play. Its still no excuse for the exit, but we must be focused on the future and consider the Kings Cup as a priority next season now.

This Real Madrid team is very good, and despite the existence of some dead wood, it will continue to improve the more it plays together and the tougher the challenge. Faith in Pellegrini and our players, despite the criticisms we have inbetween games, is the best way for fans to look at the squad. But I would like to know what you think about both the team’s performance so far, and the negative reporting that many of the Spanish dailies seem to have towards Real Madrid. Which is in sharp contrast to the ass-kissing that Marca had done in the summer when Perez began his spending spree.

Also, on Wednesday at 2:00 pm eastern time, stop by for a liveblog of the Zurich game. It will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Espanol for everyone in the US and Canada.

He plays as a central defender (pretty sure). Unless Metzelder is sold in January I don’t know how this one will work out. Apparently he’s very highly rated and Fiorentina were desperately trying to get him.

I think patience is the key here to everything. We may not win all the things we want this season, we may win nothing, but I think in the next 2-3 years if this team is given the chance to get use to one another, gel, work on the defence, we can get that 10th European Cup, we can get the Copa del Rey once again (not this season obviously but in future seasons), and we should be able to win La Liga several more times. We just all have to have patience. This season or next, we’ll see good things if it’s allowed to come together.

    o alright thanx James
but i heard a while ago that we were after another argie that plays for velez named ortmandi he could play both full back positions and also CB he is really fast and technical from what i’ve heard , juve and fiorentina wanted him too , i heard we had first option on him as well and that he’ll join us in january
as for metz i too think that he’ll be gone sooner rather than later pellegrini doesnt seem to trust him at all

Yeah I’ve heard rumors about him too. We’ve also got a first option on Araujo. He was in the Argentina U-17 squad and looked pretty promising. I would really love it if we promoted some Castilla players, but that seems unlikely seeing that they haven’t been playing well at all.

I read about Del Bosque renewing his Spain contract and just wondered how things would be different if he had been allowed to stay. Michel (Getafe coach) was probably right when he said we wouldn’t have had so many youth players leave.

Pellegrini out! Buy Ribery! Buy Evra! Raul and Guti must go! Ronaldo dependency! Buy Aguero and Pato, now! This team is a shambles! We need to… what? First in the League? Best start in 17 years? Hmmm… Buy David Villa!!!

Lol John. That’s part of our problem. We can spend so much and attract so many players that we feel we’re invincible. If someone doesn’t play at a world class level consistently we’ll ship them out and buy someone else. There’s talk of buying Vargas as a LB, which I hope doesn’t happen. He’s a great winger, but I think there are better options…Filipe Luis of Depor.

Did anyone read Pellegrini’s interview on elmundo.es? He really opens up and from what I understood (google translate) he pushes back at the press saying that whoever is the coach of Madrid is treated like a moron. I’m glad he’s standing up for himself and the players are sticking by him as well.

thanks for the article, corey–it’s nice to hear a madrileño talking sense for once. i’d say all real fans should read this, but i think this kind of thinking so goes against the very culture of real madrid, and even of madrid, the capital city of spain, that there’s just no hope to change the fans’ unrealistic expectations and more importantly, the madrid-centric perspective of the rest of the rest of the world. (it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect to win all the time when you are unaware of the existence of the rest of the league)

marca’s front pages always have at least one real gem on them, but one of my favorites of late is this one from yesterday:

    http://www.marca.com/multimedia/primeras/09/11/1123.html

lol, IN SPITE of pellegrini. i count 5 bitchy remarks about their own team winning and going top of the table. those guys are assholes. and i know marca is not real madrid or their fans, but all the same their empty-headed howling and demands for all the trophies reflects on anyone who supports the club, and (justly or no) definitely feeds my distaste for all things real madrid.

the theory that they want pellegrini out is interesting, and i wouldn’t discount it, but i think (1) insecurity that barcelona played so brilliantly and won so much last year and (2) a desire to sell lots of copies by any means necessary are the biggest factors causing all the fussing and shouting on the front page every single day.

I read the report on defensa central (I can read spanish pretty proficiently) and the info on the munoz/gago deal was reported by tuttomercato (italy) about a conversation had with a director at fiorentina; needless to say I’m not buying it until a more reputable source confirms.

What I really want to know is who anyone would like to see leave or kept during January. I’m specifically thinking about guti (doghouse), Drenthe (juventus), Momo Diarra, Gago (boca), VDV, Metzelder, and Van-Nistelrooy (liverpool, tottenham, roma). Our squad is only 23 players, so realistically without arrivals we can only let one maybe two players go.

The only players from that list that I would consider letting would be Gago, Drenthe and Metzelder. I’ve said it before, but I’d rather see Drenthe loaned out to a team in an equally competitive league than see him sold (at, realistically, a loss). With Metzelder, I think he’s a solid defender, but at this point his injuries make his spot on the roster a questionable decision. Gago – he’s done in my book. So long and thanks for all the boots.

    M. Diarra is to powerful and useful a pure DM to be let go, VDV seems to be at least attempting to justify his transfer and should be given until the end of the year, Guti’s creativity is too valuable, even if you don’t like his sometimes petulant attitude, and I just love Ruud too much to see him go. Oh, and he’s a poaching beast of a forward, still.

Ryan so you want those 6 out and bring in 6 new players so we could have even more gelling problems ?
if we are to get rid of any players we should at least wait until the summer when the season is over so the new players that will come in to replace them have the whole pre season trainings and matches to adapt to the team

Jeremy some of the things you said made sense but saying its nice to see a madridista with some sense for ONCE is crazy , where have you been living ? pluto ? there are plenty of madrid fans who are not delusional just like there are plenty of farca fans who are delusional dumb asses ( i’m assuming you’re a barca fan ) every team has level headed fans and dumb ones so please dont come here insulting us

andres, fair enough. what you say is true, there are lots of fans who aren’t delusional (and i’ll go further and say are intelligent, savvy people). i was walking a fine line between sharing my (admittedly anti-madrid) perspective and not insulting you all on your blog (which wasn’t my intention at all). generalities like the “for once” i used there don’t help walking that line, and i understand how that would be insulting to you and any RM fan. so i apologize for that.

i will however say that there’s a pretty good number of RM fans who (for example) think the solution is ALWAYS to sell half the team and then buy other players (at whatever cost), and who have the extremely limited perspective i talked about above. and even though this blog has some really insightful, level-headed fans/commenters, there are also a LOT of those types here. and without going into it, i find that sort of perspective extremely frustrating and annoying.

even more than the fans, though, i think part of what’s hard for me about RM is that it’s not just marca–hating their purchase-hyping policy and their coaching carousel stuff isn’t limited to a newspaper that covers RM. that policy comes right from the top, with perez and valdano, and is unquestionably a part of the identity of the club at this point.

anyway, sorry again for the poor phrasing. and again, my intention wasn’t to troll, but rather to discuss things a little. and finally, lest your ire be directed in the wrong direction, i’m a sevilla guy, not barcelona. (but i WILL be rooting for a barca win or a tie this weekend!)

Andres, not at all actually, that list comprises the 6 most likely to have an immediate future away from the bernabeu. I just was curious as to others opinions on these players, I’m not sure how you gathered I wanted them all out. I personally cheer for VDV almost as bad as zizou does.

Good article Corey, and right in time before El Clasico, which many consider to be a must win. The position we are in right now, and considering we are playing away, i don’t see the loss as being a tragedy, that is if we lose. The points made above are mostly correct.

Jeremy, i want to comment on something, and this goes to all the other critics that claim that Real Madrid are money whores and only want to buy players. Very few, if any youth programs have been consistent at supplying their team with players. Every once in a while, a team goes through a drought that forces him to buying players. This is especially hard for real where the mentality is to always win, which forces the coach and the president to buy the best players in case they are not present. Let’s not forget that the Real Madrid cantera provided legendary players to this world, 2 of which are playing in the team right now. Unfortunately, one of them is past his best. Soldado, Portillo and many other players are good quality players, but i don’t believe that they are world class. Raul and Casillas are legends. I remember not a long time ago when barca were the ones suffering from the drought in youth products. That was around 4 or 5 years ago. It was not until Messi and Iniesta got on the big stage that they were able to showcase their youth product talents. My point is, yes we are buying, but that doesn’t mean we never produced. Our youth players make up a significant percentage of players in La Liga. This was not pointed at Jeremy, but at the random critics.

Ryan, i see no reason why we would get rid of M Diarra or VDV right now. I really do believe that M Diarra is the DM the team needs right not rather than Lass. The coach is just amused by Lass’s energy on the field and that is what is keeping M Diarra out of the first team. I know you didn’t suggest we sell them all, but i think we need to limit our changes in the winter transfer window. Maybe left back and promoting youth players. Sarabia anyone for the winger position?

    Hala Madrid

Jeremy, you have made some very good points and I do wish more then 30,000 people viewed my page each month. Being in English limits it a bit, but taking a more rational approach to being a fan of one of the biggest clubs in the world has always seemed logical to me, so thats how I try to write. What I have noticed with so many Real Madrid fans is that tendency to buy and sell a whole team of players, but to be honest, many of those people are video game players who see Real as a great way to build a dream team. I suppose Barcelona or any other large Euro club has similar problems with these types of fans.

I wouldn’t mind having Drenthe or Marcelo loaned out to some Serie A club so they can learn how to defend. Right now I see them both as LWs. I think Ruud will decide to leave (he wants to go to the WC), Metzelder will probably be cashed in on (last year). We’ll probably have a lot more exits during the summer, Dudek, maybe Diarra, maybe Guti (if he “retires” a la Salgado).
