The Nivaldo-Ronaldo StompGate Thing
By: Corey | March 16th, 2010Translate this page:
Real got back to winning ways against Real Valladolid this past weekend, and it was a bit of a ho-hum game in terms in intensity, but there were plenty of rash tackles and penalty claims none the less, all of which went ignored by La Liga’s second worse referee, Mr. Mejuto Gonzalez. The game saw 6 yellow cards in the first half alone, 8 in total, and yet there were no reds, and no penalties given despite claims from both sides, including a clear hand ball from Sergio Ramos. Yet somehow a violent stamp on a Real player went unpunished. This is difficult for me to do, because I detest the little prat, but as he is a Real player I have to stick up for him.
Cristiano Ronaldo, after going down from a challenge by Real Valladolid’s Nivaldo, was stomped on by the Brazilian, which left some very obvious stud marks in his shin. Nivaldo was not sent off, nor given a yellow card. In fact a foul was not even called, as Mejuto inspected Ronaldo’s shin and told him to get on with it. Below is video evidence of the incident:
Pretty clear what happened there, and it was obviously deliberate. I dont like to defend Ronaldo for his antics, but that was completely uncalled for. It might not have been a foul on the initial contact, but to come back at the player and drag your studs on his leg, that is a violent act. Does the game need video replay for things like this? Sure it does, but one can understand of Mejuto Gonzalez may have missed it, but surely the fourth official or linesman saw it?
Apparently not, as no further action will be taken against Nivaldo for his clear offense, as the Disciplinary Committee decided not to act on the video evidence. What? How can you not act on that?!?! Like I said, I will not be the first to stand up for Ronaldo, he is a prick. But he could have had his shin broken! These kind of challenge must be punished, otherwise they will continue.
Jorge Valdano commented that the club would not pursue the matter either, which was a bit baffling also. After appealing several times this year for the rescinding of Ronaldo red cards, all of which were very justified and had not grounds for revocation, they choose not to press for punishment for a violent action against one of its own players? I dont get it, and Nivaldo has walked away scot free. He even had the gaul to say Ronaldo provoked him into the challenge, and that it was unintentional. Unintentional and yet provoked, does that make much sense? And then he pointed to several instances when Ronaldo made off the ball challenges that should have been penalized.
Pretty remarkable stuff, and it just goes to show how football administrators in Spain (and FIFA for that) still have their heads as far up their asses to kiss their stomaches. Will it take another disaster leg break, like the one Axel Witsel of Standard Liege committed earlier this year to convince the footballing world that these incidents should be punishable based on video replay?
Vote in our poll of the week, and let me know what you think of the incident and its aftermath in the comments.
