Team Overview

Hot song, perfect soundtrack to get this post bumping.

Goalkeeper

1. Iker Casillas- undisputed #1 for now and the next 10 years atleast, unless he leaves.

2. Jerzy Dudek- great CL final a few years back, also won the UEFA cup with Feyenoord. He is pretty mistake prone but has decent reflexes, but no technique really. I dread him in goal against Barca. Starts out #2, hopefully he ends up #3.

3. Jordi Codina- young gun, but full of potential. Real has a pretty incredible goal keeper production system, and Antonio Adan, Kiko Casilla and Felipe Ramos are all waiting for Cordina to slip up and they will take his spot. Expect him to see action in the Copa, but I honestly trust him more then Dudek. Any one who watched the Premiership since 2002 would know what im talking about.

Center Backs

1. Fabio Cannavaro- old baldie will look to have a better season then last year, he did not do bad, but he didnt do well either. this may be his last year in Madrid, so he will want to leave on a high note (CL title). Dont expect him to replicate WC 2006 form, but along with Metzelder or Pepe he might prove handy. Then again I feel like he may gradually get pushed to the bench in favor of Hot As Balls Ramos and Pepe. My buddy Fabio only has some incredibly gay in an Italian way videos og him with no shirt on sooooo we will leave this blank

2. Sergio Ramos- future captain, he is probably one of the best defenders in the world. Which is good, cause we need it. Also, he is young, and hot as balls. Probably my #1 except he may be playing on the right from time to time. Heres a video, i had a different one but there were a lot of shots of his girlfriend kissing him and i didnt want to upset the swooning female readers.

3. Pepe- 30 mill ring a bell? I never rated him when he was with Porto, so he will have to prove himself to me, but id say he is better then Helguera and has youth on his side. No pics of this hideous beast, we dont want to scare the children.

4. Metzelder- Christophe has a thing with getting injured, so like Woodgate before him, he comes in with Mr. Del Corral keeping a close eye on him. But he is a good player, and he too could play on the right if needed. I see him on the bench to start, but he will prove usefull. He is also a massive man, in a straight way of course.

Outside (Wing) Backs

Left Side

1. ? Who knows. Just because he is our best (which isnt saying much) the nod goes to Marcelo. He will definately be a great back like Roberto Carlos, but not yet. Marcelo is also a Serbian hip-hop hip-hop-anotamous artist which i think warrents a look and listen.

2. Raul Bravo- Oh lordie lordie, Raul Bravo has sucked since he was born. Greece, next…

3. Miguel Torres- I like this kid alot, but he is not a left back, but he will give it a shot because he has cojones and will play where ever he can get a game. Hats off to you guy, you will probably start alot of games to be honest.

Right Back

1. Cicinho (?)- If he does not leave I expect him to play as the starting right back. He is a good player, little lacking defensively, but fits with Schusters “Fancy Football”. Whether Roma are serious about him waits to be seen…oh wait, ole Bronzy Balls has a man crush on him and is doing his best to bring him to the Olimpico. Probably will leave if he doesnt play RB, because he has been playing LB a little in pre-season.

2. Salgado- Maybe he has gotten up there in years, or maybe its his hair. Im not a fan anymore, he just does not do well for us and I dont think he really should be on the team. That being said, he will be back up to Cicinho or Sergio Ramos but will still get a few games.

Central Midfield

1. Guti- genius, yet inconsistent. He will start many of the games, and as my favorite player is untouchable, but he does disappear from games sometimes and its best to get him out of their ASAP.

2. Gago- He will get better and better, but I doubt he will be able to defend like Djila or Puma. Fernando Redando did not defend like a beast, he was just very eligant about it, which is how Gago goes about his business. Thus i dont think he needs to be our pivot player, but rather an alternative to Guti.

3. Esteban Granero- He is good stuff, he is more close to Guti then De La Red, and I expect him to really have an impact this year in the league. Had a solid u-20 WC and signed a pro deal. Also has some crazy hair and man grizzle facial hair, mad props to that.

4. Adrian Gonzalez- Young guy, 18 i think, he is Michels son and also has alot of potential, but i dont know if he will make many starts in the center, i expect him to play on the left more often then not. Even that is less then probable though. Still, I can see him being a squad regular in 2 or 3 years.

Defensive Midfield

1. Diarra- A beast, loved him at lyon, love him in madrid. Very under rated still, and shame on Ultra Sur for booing him or ever saying anything racist against him. Not cool skinheads. I expect him to do much better this year anyways, and hopefully do some more of this.

2. Emerson- He did not have a good year. i remember one game watching him purposely avoid touching the ball. He really got it from the Madridilenos too and he will need to vastyl improve or be a complete bust. He may go back to Milan or inter before the transfer windows closes, but unless Bronzy Balls is on it it wont happen.

3. De La Red- Communist, but I have always liked him. Much like Gago, he is a true center midfielder, so he is does a little of everything well. and thats really what you want. I hope he gets more games this year, otherwise he will leave, trust me.

I’ll comment more later, but Raul Bravo no longer plays for Real (he’s in Greece) and you forgot Marcelo at left back, unless you think we’ll loan him out now that we have Drenthe.

No Marcelo is in there, he is at #1. And Raul Bravo to greece is there too. And Drenthe is coming, hold your horses, im putting him in the midfield.

Oops, my bad. (Wait, when was I transported back to the ’90s?) I guess I was just confused that Marcelo didn’t have his own entry and Raul Bravo did. I have to say that I felt much safer with Torres at left back than Bravo last season–him just warming up put the fear of God into my heart, whereas I think Torres acquitted himself well in the position, even though it is obviously not his natural place (better suited to right back or CB, in my opinion).

Well yes, it is not Torres’ natural position by any means, but he will play there if he has to and say drenthe is up field. If drenthe is going to play LB the Torres may play as the backup RB. But Cicinho and Salgado are still around, and I expect Sergio Ramos will get more games there this year.

Care to hear a couple opinions? Yes?

Left Back: I realize Torres is a rightie and the job calls for a leftie, but God bless that young man, I want him on the pitch. He gives his all, and he can even have some pretty Fancy moments pressing forward on the attack. My first choice for the position.

Centre back: Yeah, keep the damn Italian a starter. But make him play better. Swap up Pepe and Metzelder depending on who’s fit, who’s playing well, and who’s at midfielder (Pepe will be better at defending the counter attack, but when Diarra and Emerson are at midfield, Metzelder can play back and make pretend he’s an iron curtain with Cannevaro at his side). We all know that this particular position is a black hole for defenders but Sergio proved…

Right Back: Corey’s right, he’s probably one of the best defender’s in the world, for the accomplishment I just mentioned above if for no other reason. He’s also, along with Guti and Raul, among the ranks of my absolute favorite players who are still wearing white. We’re talking about Sergio Ramos here. THE Sergio Ramos. My pick for starting right back. He’s an amazing all around threat, great attacking/crossing skills, a fixture in the opposing side’s box for every corner/free kick, and can gallop back and defend, and I keep repeating this, but this skill will be the one that counts for Madrid this season. Defending counter attacks is implicit in Fancy Football.

So there’s my abridged comments on the back four, and unless someone tells me to shut the hell up, I’ll be back to comment on the midfield when my boss isn’t looking.

John: I would prefer to have Torres as left back, but Marcelo isnt to bad either. I see Drenthe as a left wing unless Robben is brought in, so the two of them can platoon it all year long. Left backs are at a premium, Roma and Lyon could use a real strong one but are having no luck just like Madrid.

Sergio Ramos as future captain tells you all you need to know, he shows heart in every game and is a die hard Madridista despite coming up through Sevilla. Granero and Adrian Gonzalez are as well, so expect more passion from the young guys.

Gago is not a natural replacement for Guti; he’s much more comfortable sitting back rather than threading the final killer pass through to the forwards. I worry that the squad is currently far too dependent on Guti’s creativity; as you say, he does tend to disappear from games and is rightly (in my opinion) seen as a good player to send on in the second half when things are going pear-shaped.
