Valdano Was Wrong I Suppose

By: Corey | June 13th, 2009

Jorge Valdano, who’s official title still escapes me, mentioned in an interview recently that he believed several of the cantera boys simply were not good enough to play for Real Madrid. Now this may be a fair assessment, given the lack of strength in depth the Castilla team had this year in its inability to regain promotion to the Segunda. The club bought more then a few youngsters to fill in the ranks because several of the C team players simply were to young to make the step up this year. You would reckon that next year many of the Castilla players will be C team players (such as Victor Merchan or Samu, names to remember) or below with a massive clear out of Castilla expected this summer besides a few key performers, and it seems logical that the C team will go through a rebuilding season just like the Castilla team. Not true for the u-18 (Juvenil A and B teams combined) team that was competing at the u-18 Clubs World Cup.

They beat Barcelona in the final to become the best u-18 team in the world yesterday, so congratulations to them for that accomplishment. Its fitting that Real and Barca would come up against one another in a competition that pits the best teams of the world against one another. In this case, it showed the strength of the two canteras in producing top quality talent. Although no word on what happens after these kids win everything in sight then never make it to the Real first team….

Anyways, the Juvenil team made Valdano eat his words yesterday, as the cantera showed their is still life in it. Many of the winning players will be making the step up to either the C or Castilla teams this summer, including highly touted playmaker Pablo Sarabia. The great hope still lives on with the kids of the cantera, and during a summer that has seen two mega transfers coincide with the little known piece of information that Alvaro Negredo has returned to Real and ex-canterano Esteban Granero is sure to rejoin him, there still is hope for youth team players to make it. Valdano threw down the gauntlet to the lads, so lets hope for more from them in the future. As always, coverage of Real’s youth categories, including Castilla’s preseason preparations can be found here on the Real Offside.

Gago as technically brilliant? Nope, never seen it. He has a decent passing range, but his lack of defensive presence and poor on-field decision making create a pretty average player. His passing is also very erratic. At one moment brilliant, at the next sloppy and amateur. If they want to take him off our hands for 15 million, that would be great.

Cesar*. Sorry for that extra e.

Corey, that’s what I see when I watch Gago too but apparently certain Chelsea fans see different lol. Oh well.

I totally agree with Corey on the assessment on Gago.
When he’s on, he can make these tremendous vertical raking passes forward… but most times, he’s sloppy, gives up the ball to easily and has almost no ability to defend (I’ve often wondered how people call him a Defensive Midfielder if the guy can’t even tackle).

But… if Chelsea think he’s brilliant, maybe they can buy him for more than the 15m Euros that Corey appraised him for… good business for us, and it allows DLR to move up the pecking order for our midfield.

i dont think gago could keep DLR out of the line up even if he stayed but yea he should be offloaded not only for the cash his sale will bring to us but also for his own sake he is still young and has potential which he wont be able to fufill if he stayed at madrid

in other news talks with valencia for villa have reached a stumbling block they want 30 mil plus negredo but we’re not willing to spend anymore than 25 , perez wanna be cheap now ? we’re talking about villa maravilla here give them those extra 5 mil before i reach into my pockets and pay them myself god dammit

Andres: your link has Graham Hunter stating that the price is 50m + Granero + Negredo for Villa and Albiol. I Think that’s too much. It’s ridiculous

Villa is worth 40m… Prices reaching up to 45-48m is just inflation coz Valencia know that Real Madrid are spending boatloads of money and that Chelsea are interested too (I heard they bid 48m).

Raul Albiol I think should be worth 10-15, euros MAX…

If we were to assume that Negredo is worth 15-18m (the price that the likes of Aston Villa and Liverpool have bid for him reportedly), I also believe that a player of Granero’s quality is also worth the same amount of money.

Villa + Albiol = 55m. Negredo + Granero = 36m. The right cash balance should be about 19m… ok let’s round it off to 20m. But the additional 50m being talked about is just madness.

If we were to speak exclusively about Villa though, I agree with you that making it a nice round 30m + Negredo, sounds like a fair compromise.

On the comment of “Perez wanna be cheap now?” I do think that Perez is being prudent with money… now let me explain: Kaka at 65m Euros is an ok price for a player of his calibre (we paid 73m for a 29 year old Zidane: Screw all the British Press who insist it’s a world record by choosing to weigh the deal based on their falling currency!) CR96 cost that much (in transfer fees and in wages) NOT because of Perez… but because of Calderon (we just had no choice on the matter). So I do think that Florentino is being prudent with money…. somewhat :)

I hope though that for our defensive options, I’d rather see the deal for Maicon go through that the one for Albiol. I get the whole idea of having a team that is more ‘Spanish’… I prefer though a team that is without question ‘The Best’ and in my humble opinion, A defensive line of Maicon-Ramos-Pepe-(unknown left back) is better than Ramos-Albiol-Pepe-(unknown left back)

@ realrock: Alipio is the kid’s name, and yeah he looks the goods.

Corey, i was just on the valencia offside and i saw the verbal lashing you had to take, pretty ridiculous. it’d be awesome if we signed villa and albiol if just to rile them up hehe

thanks sambit. i am terrible with names.

and in the first half of the season, gago was really good. one of the few guys in team along with higuain who could have held their heads somewhat high. but then his form tapered off badly.and he almost invariably went missing in the big matches. but he really was very good in the first half. and okay in the double pivot with lass. although even that went awry in the big matches. maybe he will do well in a pirloesque role. he can pass very well. we have all seen that. but its only on good days. and the problem is that the good days have been far and few in between.

the problem is that gago is no redondo but from the very start he was made out to be the second coming of el principe. he is a good player but not at all like redondo was a one man midfield. tackled, defended, passed, scored. every darn thing. so we gave him some pretty huge boots to fill.the guy failed. needs to go now.

It seems that negotiations for Villa have hit a dead end, and now Florentino appears to be going after Forlan (30 years old, 38 mill euros); I for one would keep Negredo, he’s younger, is a cantera product, and feels the colors…, Forlan is a great goalscorer, but he’s not getting any younger…

Cesar, I was about to type up the same thing. I feel the same way about Forlan – don’t want him for both of those reasons – and while I’d like to keep Negredo, I think Villa has to be a preference for us. If Valencia want 5 million euros extra for Villa, then pay it. It’ll still be a bargain for a player I think is the best striker in the world. Please Florentino, you said you would get the best of the world and of Spain, well David Villa fits both of those categories.

My thinking is that we actually don’t need David Villa. We can just bring Negredo back and let Higuain lead the line (or pair him up with Negredo). Negredo’s height and aerial ability gives something different from the players we have that play the ball well on the ground.

However, any move for Villa is something I’d welcome and I wouldn’t feel too bad about letting go of Negredo for the operation. The extra 5m to make it 30m plus Negredo is ok for me too. Villa is after all one of the best strikers (if not the best) in the world

If however it becomes a choice between Negredo and Forlan then I say keep Negredo.

There is talk now that Higuain is being used to lure Ibrahimovic to Real Madrid. If this is true, someone should go hit Florentino in the head with a brick!

    >:(

Madridista Mac, if that’s the case, I’m getting on a plane tomorrow to Madrid, so I could smack some sense into florentino!!!!

Jnice, thanks for the info, good to see Espn is dedicated to soccer…

I also read that Timothy from the Valencia site is going to the game on August 9th wearing his valencia jersey, hopefully it won’t be his VILLA jersey if we sign him, lol!!!! Timothy, if you read this, I’m just messing man, I know it must be tough for all of you at the Valencia offside to see the mess your team is in right now, and how you MUST let go of some players, it just plain SUCKS

I don’t know if Villa would fit in all that well with Higuain, CR96, and Kaka. All three are creators. I think Negredo/Huntelaar would benefit from service from these three. Not saying Villa isn’t better or wouldn’t do beter, but he may imbalance the team chemestry. I think our front line will do fine without him. I’d like to have him but not at the price they want. Definitely don’t want Forlan.

I would really love to see what RVN can do with the delivery of CR and KaKa, I would hate to see him leave. For a team like hotspur, I just think he is better than a second tier EPL side. I know I may be in the minority, but I want Huntelaar to stick around. I think we have yet to see what he is really capable of
