Weekend Viewing: No Real Madrid broadcast? Part 2
By: Steve | October 5th, 2007Hala Madrid! I don’t know the situation in America, but over here in the Queen’s own land, Real Madrid is again getting the shaft on TV. This weekend’s Liga matches on Sky Sports will feature Valencia v Espanyol, Barcelona v Atletico, and Sevilla v Deportivo (the latter two matches on tape delay), but there’s nothing about Los Merengues hosting Recreativo Huelva, the team that came into our house last season and gave us a spanking.
Quite frustrating since that means no liveblog again, but I suppose it dovetails nicely with my plans, since it’s Thanksgiving in Canadia this weekend, and I’m having some turkey dinner with some Canuck friends here in the Big Smoke on Sunday. Good luck getting the match wherever you are.

I’m never really surprised when RM doesn’t get shown simply because they don’t seem to have as good of a scheduling department as Barca. But in this case, as the Recre game takes place at the same time as the much more interesting Barca-Atleti game, it makes sense that no one outside of Spain is going to show them.
But why is Barca on tape delay? It’s at 11am here, so 4pm in England…aren’t all the EPL games over by then?
Of course, I’m still going to bitch when Barca-Mallorca or something is bumped for a match equivalent to Madrid-Sevilla…

I think it has to do with MediaPro and the damn TV rights again. I was hoping to see Los Blancos play again this week. Usually GolTV in the U.S. shows all Barca and Madrid matches. Very strange of them to miss broadcasts.

DriveShot, they’re not “missing” a broadcast simply because RM and Barca are playing at the same time this week. That is weird thing, not that GolTV chose simply to not air RM.
Are there more RM fans in the US or Barca? I’ve always sorta wondered that.

It is the MediaPro issue again. Even if GolTV decided to show the Barca match live instead of Real Madrid, they would, as they did last season, show a replay in the evening or the next day. That is not on their schedule, thus it means they don’t have the rights, not that they didn’t want them.
Also, I believe it is the league, in its infinite wisdom, that sets the schedule, not the clubs, which is why RM.com is occasionally wrong about them until the last minute.

Driveshot; Louise:
Can either of you (or anyone else) confirm Mediapro/Soge Cable rights issues, or is it speculation? I’m serious, if I miss anymore Madrid games due to the belly-aching of wealthy coporate organizations, I’ll…

Didn’t Real Madrid sign a one billion dollar broadcasting deal last season? If so, their broadcasters suck.

John, I can’t point you to an exact article, but from what I’m hearing on a variety of RM fan boards, no one is getting this internationally, and that’s not just a scheduling conflict. Unfortunately, this not only means we can’t watch on television, but streaming will be sparce, as well.
Inara, the very problem is that huge contract, which seems to overlap internationally with another. Barca was able to settle this, RM was not, and with this management, somehow that doesn’t surprise me.
