Wesley Is Gonna Be A-Okay!

By: Corey | August 4th, 2008

Wesley Sneijder left the field at Emirate Stadium yesterday on a stretcher we all feared for the worst. Ramon Calderon looked gloom, he really is a man with a distinct frown. And Bernd was not to optimistic either, saying Wesley would be out for some time. The players all looked concerned after the match, and the whole mood of the preseason dramatically took a turn for the worst.

Well, today Wesley had an MRI, and it turns out its not as bad as first feared. Here is what the club doctors came across:

Tras la resonancia magnética nuclear practicada en el día de hoy por los servicios médicos del Real Madrid, al jugador Wesley Sneijder, se confirma la lesion del Ligamento Lateral Interno y la integridad del Ligamento Cruzado Anterior, por lo que con tratamiento ortopedico y de rehabilitacion se estima que el tiempo de baja será aproximadamente de 3 meses..

3 months!?! Thats not bad at all. Of course he wont be truely in fit and ready to roll until late Novemeber, but that may be a much needed boost to the squad by then. His ACL is fine, he has a lesion on his ILL, which is not that bad (I had a girlfriend in highschool, also a club soccer player, who tore her ACL in boths knees 2 times apiece and had 8 surgeries, so I know a little about the knee ligaments). That is a great way to start my day, because I was fearing the worst, that he may be out until the last few months of the campaign, and what a blow that would be to loose one of your best players before the season starts.

While he is out, we know that Guti’s inconsitency may come more in to focus, but my hope is that wont be a problem. Because we now have Rafeal van der Vaart, and we have De la Red back too. Im not to worried about it actually after this great news. Calderon had this to say:

‘We are very upset about Sneijder’s injury,’ he said. ‘It’s serious and it’s the worst news we could have.

‘He has, at the very least, torn his interior ligament.

‘He is very bad, very upset. He is crying because it is a very serious problem and very painful.

‘He is a very important footballer for us but that’s sport. We feel bad for him. He had bad luck.’

We will monitor Sneijder’s progress intently of course, but look on the bright side, it isnt an ACL tear.

Yeah, while I’m thoroughly pissed off about that Diaby tackle (read ‘Emirates Cup Info’ post), I see this as a boon to some of our less famous midfielders, specifically De la Red. Wesley’s absence should create more oportunities for Ruben to shine, although Van der Vaart’s signing is a step back for him. Still, Madrid’s midfield is one place that lacks neither depth nor talent, and it’ll be nice to see some competition for that spot until Sneijder returns. Hala Madrid!

I do see Sneijders injury to be an oppurtunity for both Javi and Ruben in the midfield. The thing is, Van der Vaart will definately make it harder for them, especially since Ruben spoke of wanting to be a more attacking midfielder and Javi said he didnt mind playing center back but…he is a DM with two other DMs in the squad.

who allowed diaby on to d pitch?? He should not b allowed 2 touch a ball until wesley comes back.really such things should b punished severely.how is it fair dat u send a player out 4 months nd escape widout ne retribution??football has evolved past d time of gentile nd d butcher of bilbao, goixotea(i keep forgetting his name). Such fouls should b punished harshly.

Schuster knows full well about the Butcher of Bilbao, having lost a signifcant portion of his career due to one of his tackles. These things happen in football though, so if we punish players for these tackles, we will be playing baseball with no physical contact, BORING!

we don´t know that for sure ,corey. maybe it will just force defenders to be better tacklers.i am not saying that punish them all with a red card nd ban.but tackles like martin taylor´s on eduardo(he didn´t even look like aiming for d ball) or quique alvarez´s lunge on robben dat send glassboy back out for 1.5 months should be punished.injuries can have rather far reaching impacts, especially if they r long term.so it might very well happen that someone is injured badly enough that his career is screwed completely.schuster nd van basten went down that road nd were never d same afterwards.i for one definitely won´t like to see someone lose his career(nd i m not implying dat ne1 else would)because of a bad tackle that shouldn´t have happened.
